Read the discussion thread to understand why this should hopefully be the best SDA tourney yet! Lots of good reasons.

Ask if you need any emulator help or other help. Each week goes from Sunday-Monday midnight EST to the next. One credit only! No savestates or slowdown either for submitted runs, although you can use them to practice of course. There were no signups, so play each week that you can and don't sweat it. There might be a prize randomly given to someone who plays all weeks, haven't decided yet. Scoring will be linear based on end total number of participants, just like last tourney.

Please do not be ashamed to submit your score. All scores are welcome. Remember too that video or other proof is not required as this is a casual tourney! However, you can provide pics or movie inputs or Youtube links if you want, and I will gladly link to them. Please play and have fun!

Time for one of my favorite games ever. It's Wolf Team's classic: Granada! Released for the Sharp X68000 and Sega Genesis in 1990 (over two years before Recca!), this game is so far ahead of its time it will make your face melt. It's about the complex relationship between a man named Leon and his trusty Granada, the little tank that could, as they do the one thing they know how... fight! The music -- here is a rip of the soundtrack from the X68000 version of the game (not the officially published CD) -- is jaw-droppingly awesome, and honestly, so is everything else about the game. Almost twenty years later, I'd say still no game has topped Granada in the multidirectional top-down shooter genre.

I decided I did want at least one week to be mostly about survival (per SSS acronym), so this will be the one. We will be playing the REV00 Genesis version of the game since that will be easier for most people (although the X68000 version has story pictures as splash screens in between stages, less slowdown, and higher quality graphics and music). As far as I can tell, REV01 is the same except some of the text has changed, so it should also be ok. You can use a real Genesis or any Genesis emulator; the one I use is Gens since I already need it to watch TASvideos movies. For the rom, I would type "edgeemu" as a search into Google. Load the game and go into the configuration. Set the level to Mania -- good luck, you'll need it! Leave Granada at 3 of course, and you can change whatever else you like, including controls. I highly recommend you do change the controls to something you like, because they are highly configurable and you want them to fit you like a glove, although the default is ok.

There is a fair amount of info about this game online (a lot of it in Japanese), but judging from what people prefer in STGT and past tourneys, I will leave everything up to you. You can pretty much figure out everything yourself, but I will say that there is a secret in stage 2 that you will probably want to learn or discover. Also take it upon yourself to figure out the optimal means of movement! Something to pay attention to is that bosses have weak points that you'll want to hit, and sometimes you'll want to be very precise. There are neat tricks and strategies to all of them.

Format your submissions like this:

Radix - 1,010,101 - Stage 5

A warning if you do complete the game: at least the Genesis version has a bug, just like Thunder Dragon 2, where the final stage's score tally isn't added to your score. So if you beat the game, screenshot or remember your finishing time bonus for the last stage, then manually add that to your final score.

Remember, since this is for survival, the top goal is stage reached! Score will be used to break ties for the same stage. I would also like to add that if you want to play another difficulty like Normal for fun or practice, I will take those scores too in another table, although it will not count for this tourney. In fact, if you feel like you're getting stuck and want to see more of the game, I'd recommend Easy. In these cases, note the difficulty of course. Good luck, and please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Now have fun!

Have you long been searching for a NES game with an even more awesome concept than Yume Penguin Monogatari? Well, keep searching, but this is probably a solid second place! Kabuki Quantum Fighter is about a headbanging cybernetic clown who attacks with his hair. That's all that really needs to be said. It's actually a significantly better game to speedrun than Yume Penguin too. Short and sweet, with some light planning, and fast-paced at all times. Another highly impressive game from late 1990 this time, Kabuki is by Human (of Clock Tower, Fire Pro Wrestling, Monster Party, SOS, The Firemen "fame") and was released by Pack-In-Video in Japan and HAL in the US.

We will be speedrunning the default US version. For an emulator, you can use FCEUX. You can get the rom from the same place you got Granada's. Time like SDA, from first start of control (as soon as stage 1 starts) until end of control (last hit on final boss). You can post even if you haven't beaten the game; a 15:00 stage 5 beats a 10:00 stage 4 (these times are at the start of stages, stage 5 means you died on stage 5). Use this online stopwatch if you need one.

Special week! I promised a top-tier shmup that even the shmupheads at SDA probably haven't played. How is this possible? It's the era: too recent to be emulated well in MAME, too old to be played by Dreamcast and PS2 and 360 importers. Fitting in this small window is the 1996 classic, Soukyugurentai. This time it's Raizing's take on the formula of incredible atmosphere and lock-on lasers established three years earlier in Taito's RayForce. Features music by Sakimoto that is way better than the music he did for some other shooter ported to the Saturn -- that would be Radiant Silvergun -- as well as the overwhelming majority of his other soundtracks. If there was any justice in the world, the relative fame of Souky and Silvergun would be swapped.

But wait, how are we going to play this game if it runs poorly in MAME and SSF? I mean, that's why people haven't played it yet, right? That's the sneaky bit. Besides the Saturn, Souky also received a PS1 port. So fire up your PS1 emulator of choice -- I recommend pSX. Don't worry about this being too slow for you; my comp is surely older than yours and it runs this perfectly. Search for "scph1001.bin megaupload" if you need the bios. As for the iso, it's hard to find and you're on your own, but I do have some sweet pics of my cat. (The reason the filesize is so large is because she is very cute.) Just trust me, you definitely want to download this. I will take these pics down at the end of the week because the level of cuteness is quite dangerous. Let me know if you need any help with my cat pics. Ok, now to actually score in Souky, pretty much what you do is try to kill as many guys simultaneously with your lock-on laser as possible. You can try for bomb bonus but it's better to bomb than to die of course. All four face buttons do something, try them out.

Important instructions! When you load up the game and get to the title screen, hit select and then circle. Hit right to change the 4 to 5. Then move down five times and hit right to change extends from 2mil / every 3mil to 3mil / 6mil. Hit down three times until you are on the bottom selection and hit circle to return. Back in the menu, move down once to the second option and hit circle. Now you can start. Zenic is illiterate so here is a visual representation.

What that did was change the settings to default in Arcade mode -- what we're playing. If you notice four selectable characters, female narration, and neat-looking cutscenes, you're in Special mode -- what we're not playing. Follow the instructions above and try again. Of course, if you have the means, you can play default Arcade mode on the PCB, MAME, Saturn, whatever.

We are playing for score! Format your submissions like this (saying any of the below, like blue, is ok):

Radix - 3,333,333 - Stage 3 - Scallop

Swordfish = Red = Kaori = Toryu
Mackerel = Blue = Card = Shiden

I have a special fondness for puzzle games that require execution. That's certainly the case with Taito's Pop'n Pop, which can best be described as Puzzle Bobble meets Space Invaders. Maybe a change in style will help out participation this week. If you can muster the willpower to play a Flash game, turn on your computer to read this, or breathe in air, you can muster the willpower to play this great game. Look how inviting it is! Looks like a very fun game I'd like to play, anyway.

I never realized until looking at Wikipedia right now, just how many platforms this has been ported to under various names. You can play on PS1, GBC, Wii, and DS with ports, and Xbox and PC with the incredibly great deal of Taito Legends 2, but recommended platform this week is MAME. Use any version of MAME you want; I like MAME Plus! For the rom, try any site like the one you used for Granada; the specific rom you want is 2.07O -- o for orgasm I guess.

Since playing for score in this game is milk city, we will be speedrunning. The game is nice enough to track your times for each stage, so jot them down and add them up. It's not nice enough to tell you your total time though. Since this week is speedrunning and I want full runs to be as short as possible, this means we're playing puzzle mode on normal. If you want to submit hard mode times, I'll take those too.

The characters are Bub, Pocky, Don, and Tiki. ALL (reached by K) = ALL (reached by O) > C-2 > C-1 > B-4 > A-3
Format your submissions like this:

Radix - 1:00 - Stage A-4 - Pocky

Awesome. BTW just so nobody gets the wrong idea, this isn't the shmup I was referring to in the hype/discussion thread. That will be a traditional shmup in the strict sense, not this multidirectional shooter thing.

Edit: I'm rusty at this, but here's a score.

Gonna need an emulator and rom for this... I'm way busy to do a 10 second search, but I'll see what me can do. (If I get it, I'm ikely to play it like 10 hours a day until I optimize it or something Tongue) If we get a better score than before, do we post a new post, or update the old one?

Alright, I'll play your stinkin' little game, Enhasa.

I'm horrible at it, but I'm quickly getting the hang of it now that I've figured out what it's all about.

Just to clarify the rules...

is one required to make a recording of the attempt in order to submit a score?

is one required to do this tournament on an actual console?  Or can one submit a score played on emulator? (with no savestates or slowdown of course)

@Feasel:
I'd like to hope the answer to both your questions is "No."  I don't know who'd be able to obtain a hard copy of the game within a week, but I'm guessing not too many.  Since this is the Casual Speedrunning sub-thread where emulator/ROM runs are acceptable and no video is needed to post times, I'd assume this tournament is...  well, casual.   Grin

I played for about two hours today.
Mania difficulty with 3 lives: I reached Stage 4 with 266,708 points.  I'm getting better, though.  An update will come sometime later, for sure.

Update: Mania w/ 3 lives: Reached Stage 5 with 275,138... no, 425,300
Update again:  Last attempt of the day, I swear.   Tongue

You don't have to record anything and your attempts can be done on an emulator. Tournaments like this are run on the "honor system," so Enhasa just takes it on good faith that you're submitting legitimate scores. As said in the original post, these things are just all about fun.

On another note, hopefully I'll be getting in on this sometime soon. I've missed the last few tournaments so I say it's time to come back. Especially since this is supposed to be the most awesome tourney ever.
