Okay, my husband and I finally got this game back from our nephew, and we've started working on it.  So far, we have just the first two chapters of episode IV planned out.

We've run into a little dilemma, though.  On chapter 2, there are a couple points where my husband is controlling Obi-wan and I'm Luke, and we have to walk along some long stretches.  Obi-wan is much faster than Luke (especially when continuously double-jumping), and sometimes he gets so far ahead that I get kicked out of the game.  When I press start to get back in, it teleports Luke up close to Obi-wan.  Is this legal?  To me, it seems kind of like cheating.  It can be fixed easily by having Obi-wan slow down a bit on those long stretches so Luke doesn't get kicked out, but that would be slower.

I don't see what's wrong with this exploit, it's not like you're actually warping anywhere, and no one wants to see stretches of walking that are longer than necessary.

The main thing I was worried about with that exploit is that it kicks one of the players out of the game briefly, so the level isn't done entirely with 2 players.  And if this exploit is allowed, then I can think of other times where it might make things easier for one player to voluntarily drop out (which either player can do at any time).  It doesn't seem right to me, but I'm not the authority on it.

I would have said what Mike said completely. Basically think of it like this. 2P isn't a restriction category, it is the relaxation of the 1P restriction. Much like multisegment is "anything goes" on number of segments, multiplayer is "anything goes" on number of players. (If a game allowed 4 or 8 players, and it was faster, there would just be a multiplayer category. We wouldn't bother with 2P, 3P, etc.) Just like you aren't required to fully multisegment (ie, use every save point), you wouldn't be required to use all players at all times.

Not to base ourselves on tasvideos (although the rationale is the same which is why I bring it up), but if you watch some of the TAS's like Chip 'n Dale, you can see many cases where one character gets ahead and the other catches up, and this is used to good benefit.

All right, your explanation makes sense, Enhasa.  (BTW, are you considered an authority on things like this now? Smiley)  When I think about it, though, it probably take up more time for a player to manually drop out, since you have to select it from a menu, so that might not be so helpful.  The times where the game automatically kicks a player out can definitely help, though.

Well I dunno, but I pretty much agree with Mike on most things anyway. Maybe I should get Radix to make me a forum mod so I look more official. Wink
