Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

Released in April 2005, RoE is the only official expansion to Doom3.
The expansion takes place back on Mars less than 2 years after the incident that took place in the original Doom3. The game begins when a team of Marines under the control of UAC discover a Demonic artifact after satellites have been detecting strange signals originating from the site on Mars. From then onwards, all Hell is loose.

The expansion is fairly short, only 12 levels [PC] total, and well under an hour for most runs.
New weapons include the Double-Barreled shotgun, and the Grabber (similar to the gravity gun in Half-Life 2).
Replacing the Soul Cube from Doom3 is the Artefact, a Demonic heart that can be used to temporarily slow time, greatly increase the movement speed and damage, and render the player invulnerable with limited usage throughout the game.

All Doom3-expansion related runs, tricks and so on can be posted here for all PC specific posts, here for Xbox specific, or either topic for something general about the game.

I'll be watching apathy's run to see how much time can be stripped from it.

Honestly yiff, dont you think you should do a multi-segment nightmare run of RoE before attempting SS? Just so you have a clear picture in mind for what time to try to come close to.

Anyway, here are the tricks i discovered for RoE lifted from the Doom3 topic:

IT IS POSSIBLE TO GLIDE SHORT DISTANCES USING THE GRABBER AND AN OBJECT (BARREL IS EASIEST)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIl_dFtLf14

This is faster than berserk strafejump and requires only a decimal of stamina. It takes you super fast for a short distance which is good for RoE because every level is enclosed. Barrels (or similar sized objects) should be used for boosting along a straight path. This could save you alot of stamina and artifact charges as you can cover distances with great speed at almost no stamina cost. I think this can also be used to boost yourself up vertical walls.
If you manage to exploit this to the fullest, you can use the artifact only when you need to be invulnerable (in Nightmare) or for barrel jumping. The rest of the distance can be covered with grabber gliding.

    To glide:
    1. Grab an object
    2. Place it opposite to the direction you want to go
    3. Swing your mouse quickly to the opposite direction and jump (with run) at the same time. I realised that you can do this while just walking but there is a chance that you would fail or be boosted upwards, anyway, the stamina usage is neglible so its better to hold run.

    Gliding trick in erebus2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoYoNqpeWe0

Most of the time, the barrel comes along with you, so you could use it to block the spawn of the mini-imp or just kill it.

I will have to see if the glide trick work on the BOX, it's a shame that levels are cut out cause I can't do the thing in erebus 2 Cry

    Nice anyway! Wink

EDIT: I cannot run that game for now and the reason is that my brother borrow my X-box. DAMN!

I've started working on just individual levels most of the time (because the game is short) before continuously practice the entire game from the start, but I suppose this could count as a Segmented run if I wanted to submit it.

Oh, and I finally have ADSL. I'm uploading the RoE Copy videos now. The first few levels actually look kinda terrible now.. I don't strafejump or anything. Things do get better soon enough, and i'm really happy with the last level, and m10-m11.
It's still 10+ minutes faster than the old over all run so..

And yes, I did get stuck in the door in level 2 on purpose. It keeps the door from closing.

Very nice runs, a few errors here and there but its good.
For that level where you used the mini-imp to block the door, you can also use objects. So im thinking that you could kill both mini-imps with grenades, then you pick a barrel and glide to the end, and use that barrel to block the door.
I like your artifactless attempt with the berserk boss.
Was that the fastest time you clocked? If not then maybe you should dedicate a segment to it.
I havent played Nightmare RoE but, from your marine run, it looks like you use your charges very sparingly. So eventhough Nightmare doesnt have many corpses for you to charge your artifact, could we still be seeing the same routes for your Nightmare run?

I cant wait for your marine re-run, just include strafejumping and some new tricks (gliding, barrel jumping) and it should be perfect.

Do you think you could show us any of your segmented Nightmare runs?

Few errors, perhaps, but still far from optimised. Which is where this topic should become useful.

It was the fastest time I clocked, both for the boss fight and overall, but I only spent a single week on that level, so I may have not found a sequence break. I think you can only kill the boss after he uses his flame-flame-flame/pounce-pounce-pounce sequence three times, but it may (or may not) be possible to kill him earlier. It'll be worth studying, i'll check it out once I get up to that level.

    I wish..
I only used the not-so-often (and still too frequently in early levels) because it makes doors open a lot slower, and doesn't give the berserk powerup that the player gains on Nightmare (where you rely on the artifact a lot).

There are approximately 20% of the Human Souls required to charge the artifact on Nightmare, than there are on Marine... and not many of those are in the Marine path. The nightmare path will be slightly different from the marine path, and occasionally I will need to stray from the path to powerup the artifact.

It'll be a while.. before the end of 2007, for sure.

Yes I can, but for now they'll be nothing special. I'm going to redo the Nightmare Segmented run several times until I gain a better result overall.

EDIT: I'll be posting more videos soon enough.

I think i may have found a faster way to get through the invulnerable boss.

    1. Use artifact
    2. Fire 2 rockets and hit the head
    3. Destroy core with 1 shot from the double barrel (you should still have berserk on if you are fast)
    4. Use artifact
    5. 2 rockets to the head
    6. Destroy core with double barrel
    7. Use artifact (and charge it using the body near the rocket ammo and med kit)
    8. 3 rockets to the head
    9. Destroy core with double barrel
    10. Use artifact
    11. 3 rockets to the head

Destroying the core with the double barrel at close range will knock you back. This doesnt cause damage, however, falling against the boss will. This may not be convenient in Nightmare so position yourself so you dont get knocked into the boss.

The way you described is definitely faster than anything i've done. I Didn't know you could destroy those things with anything but the RL!!

Only problem is entering the boss room with at least 2 Charges. There's a corpse right outside the front door (not sure if it's there on Nightmare) and I have a tendency to use all the Artifact charges up just to survive the first 2/3 of the level; tiny corridoors filled with marines, huge open-air sections, then a lot more corridoors. Enemies spawn rapidly in the bridge section of the level, and it's going to take a lot of work before it falls into place during the SS.
    Heh, no kidding.  Sad

You dont have to enter the room with a fully charged artifact (eventhough this is the ideal situation), you can still do like in your run and collect charges from the lower level.

The hard part is in hitting the boss' head with the rockets. Some of his attack animations might block the path of your rocket and the smoke from rocket explosions could obscure your vision.
Like i said, try out a segmented Nightmare run first Smiley

Oh and i found a new trick... well not really a trick, but i noticed you didnt use it in your marine run.
In Erebus 6, when you are in that small tunnel with a sentry, there is a part where everything goes red and 2 mini-imps teleport in. You can cancel it by pressing Escape.  Smiley

Still going, don't worry about that. I haven't posted anything for a while because there's nothing new to say, I've just been practising both D3 and RoE Nightmare Paths for the last couple of weeks, haven't found any new tricks that I would definitely use in the SS yet, (apart from the flying tricks with the grabber) and so far I can safely run about 50% of the game in SS on a good day.
Just telling you I won't let this die.
I should update semi-regularly, or something. Smiley
