If you don't feel like reading the topic, then at least read the following. If you're going to donate to this fund, please post in this topic after you donate. Also, please post how much you donated so nate knows you donated to the fund and not to SDA. The donation button is on the front page in the upper-left corner.

We have runners on SDA who really want to come to MAGFest, but can't because they don't have enough money. If you want these runners to go to MAGFest, or if you just want to contribute to SDA somehow, then please to contribute to this fund. These runners won't be able to come to MAGFest otherwise.

There are a couple of rules to this fund.

-This fund is only for sending runners to MAGFest because it's for people who have contributed to SDA in the past. By runners, I mean people have actually run a game.

-Only people who are serious about coming to MAGFest may participate in this fund. If you are not sure you want come to MAGFest even if you have the money, then this fund is not for you.

-Runners who live in US and Canada have a much better chance of receiving money from the fund than runners from other countries. We have nothing against our European and Asian runners, but international flights are expensive.

-If there is any money left (I kind of doubt it, but it might happen), then it will go to the SDA marathon charity.

How to Donate

Go to the front page and click on the donation button, then donate some money. After donating, post in this topic with how much you donated so that nate and I know you donated.

The list of runners

Andrewg
Wak (he says he might not be able to get a passport in time though, can any other Canadians confirm this?)

Money currently in the fund

~$120 (latest donation is vorpaledge)

I mean, would you truly be impressed by a guy on a motorcycle winning the Tour de France? He's not cheating, just making it a little easier, as constantly pressing on a pedal can get quite repetitive.

Wow, I've never seen so many stickies on one board in my life.

This isn't a bad idea and couldn't hurt, but I wonder how many people will donate since donations to SDA are painfully low (and this is much, much more niche than donating to SDA). Of course, if this actually works (I hope it does), this means we should actually ask for donations. People kinda don't think about donating until you have some kind of a donation drive. The problem is we have too much integrity to sell out on this sort of thing, but all the donation drives I've seen in the past (for sites with far less content than we do) have been sickeningly successful, even when the top reward is only seeing a pic of some guy dress up as a moogle for Halloween when he was already going to do that and enjoy it. Damn cosplayers. Shocked

Enhasa: We had a donation drive a year or two ago because we were short on money (I forgot why), and it was actually quite successful. I'm not sure where the thread is now, but I'm sure nate could dig it up.

Carcinogen: Both really, it depends on how much money is in the fund.

Is this the thread: http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,7012.0.html  Anyway I just added $5 for the fund.  Have a good time at magfest.

Also I'm Canadian too so when I get a chance I'll see how long it takes to get a passport.  I checked and you could also use a nexus card, but getting one might be harder then a passport.

I kinda remember that thread now. It was when we had lunarpages and then dreamhost, lol. My preference was just to move to tasvideos torrent distribution model + archive.org and save TONS OF MOOLAH. I wouldn't mind at all, and I doubt most people would (I mean, switching to dvd recorder only probably pissed a lot more people off %wise, same with many of our other policies), but Nate and Grenola made it sound like such a decision would be the instant death of SDA. I'm outnumbered, so I'm probably wrong, but tasvideos seems to do pretty well for itself without direct download.

I think I just ignored that thread entirely and didn't donate then because I didn't want to support what I didn't believe in. (Similarly, I donated several times to tasvideos before, but I wouldn't anymore now that Bisqwit quit.) I donated several times to SDA before that, and now I don't donate money because that would be a drop in a bucket compared to the existing time donations. Lips sealed

I just added 25$, if only to help a fellow Canadian out Wink

I added $10. Any LAN type event is worth a donation to be honest. And one with speedrunners there. Wish I could come to be honest. I was gonna add £5, but Paypal asked in dollars, so rather than converting I just decided $10. You lucky people Tongue

Perhaps it's not quite the same, but I'm curious if donations to get runners to MAGfest is gonna have an effect on the donations for the cause. On the other hand, getting the players to MAGfest could potentially bring in more donations.

As much as I like the idea of going, I really can't guess if I can go even if the trip is paid for. :^( I guess it all depends on my luck in the next three months.

Don't worry about donating, any extra money will be put to good use (donation to SDA, donation to charity, whatever). We should probably say what we're going to do with excess money though. I'd figure it would just go to SDA, we need it.
