Any ideas what causes this? Even if I set it to two pass, the produced video comes out in MQ-like quality. Even when I encode with anri. The raw uncompressed file isn't corrupted or anything (and looks like it should in vdub), it's like that for every video that I record using fraps. Help Lips sealed.

Possible causes:

- high framerate
- high resolution
- high motion
- high details
- no motion blur / very crisp graphics

Would you say your video fits any of the above?

-60fps
-640x480
-not really
-no
-no motion blur whatsoever (it's a kinda 16-bit style pc game)

So I guess it's normal?

Doesn't sound normal.

Can you upload a small sample (10-20 seconds) of the raw video, as well as an anri-encoded version of this sample? I'll encode the raw file with anri and compare to yours.

raw

anri

The encode seems simply darker, but if you brighten the video you can clearly see the difference. The real problem is that this is the best it can get, even in HQ it looks blury or something.

It's certainly not a bitrate issue. That video's average is 544 kbps, far away from HQ's 2048.

I believe what you're seeing is the conversion from RGB to YV12 colour space which is a way to lower colour resolution and thus save on the bitrate. Compare 4:4:4 (RGB) to 4:2:0 (YV12) in the following pic:

This can be noticeable on 16-bit style games. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it. All modern codecs use the YV12 colour space.

btw, it's rare that someone complains about this, you have good eyes. Tongue
