SDA speedrunning Championship 2003 : Contest Eight

  1. For our final contest in this series we've decided to do something a little different. The contest will be fought across all five disciplines (yes, I said FIVE disciplines) and each discipline will be contested on a different map. :-)

  2. The Easy Run is being run on this map. It's an old speedmap by Xenon. What more is there to say?

  3. The Easy 100% is being run on this map. A small, old custom map by Marc Roussel with plenty of space for people to get to the exit with one kill missing...

  4. The Nightmare Run is being run on this map. It's a tricky little map from our old friend David Hocking. In theory getting to the end should be quite straight forward...

  5. The Nightmare 100% is being run on this map. It's a small, brutal map by Jason Zukowski of "Blue Hell" fame.

  6. The Boost-a-thon is being run on this map. It's a conversion (by Phil) of the popular TeamFortress map 2fort5. Just get the enemy flag, cap it and exit. Simple!

  7. The Winner in each category will be the person who exits in the fastest time.

  8. Name your files in this format: c8_er/eh/nr/nh/b_yourname.dem, c8_er/eh/nr/nh/b_yourname.txt. For example, a nightmare run demo might be called c8_nr_richard.dem

  9. Entries should be sent to sda_contest@planetquake.com, not the regular SDA e-mail address. Any mail sent to this address should generate an automatic reply informing you we have received your demos. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A REPLY THEN CHANCES ARE WE HAVEN'T RECEIVED YOUR DEMO! If this is the case then either try again, catch one of us on ICQ, go to our IRC channel or post something in the forum.

  10. All standard rules apply.

  11. Since this is a little more complex than previous contests you will get a whole month to send your demos to us. The deadline is Midnight CET, Tuesday December 30th 2003.

  12. Any questions or queries, mail us.

  13. Good luck and happy running!

Not a great deal of scope for route choices here, it was all in the fine tuning. Timo Nieminen proved to be the fine-tuniest with Ripah hot on his heels and Anders nearly a second behing him.

Plently of scope for runnin' and jumpin' and even a little fish fryin' in this map but once again the power of the mighty Timo Nieminen swept the opposition aside as he grabbed his second win of the day. Ivan produced a very smooth demo for a well deserved second and Ripah... got third. :-)

Most people agreed that this was the most fun run to do in this set of contests. Let's be honest, everyone enjoys riding a mass of shambler lightning. The clear winner was Kay Berntsen who beat Timo and Anders by more than a second with some classic play such as the little side to side shimmy in the last tunnel to slip through the wall of shamblers without even slowing down.

What was expected to be a very close bloodbath turned into a quite spread out bloodlessbath as several people used coop 2 to remove the corpses and gibs. Including the winner Ivan Vladev, who I must admit got a faster time than I was ever expecting to see. Timo eased into the second spot and making his first appearance in this championship we have Dmitry in third.

Well, I guess there aren't as many old TF players out there as I thought there were but we still had some boosterific demos sent in. Principle among them was Robert Axelsson closly followed by (of course...) Timo! Anders once again snagged some of the big points by strolling in in third place.

It's all over! Finally the championship has ground to a close. Congratulations on this contests wins to Timo, Kay, Ivan and Robert and a big thank-you from myself and Thomas to everyone that supported this series by sending in their demos (even if they knew they weren't going to win), making such cool maps or just watching the demos. So where does this leave the Championship Ladder? Who is the greatest speedrunner of 2003? Go take a look and see.

The winning demos are available HERE and, finally, all demos can be downloaded HERE.
