SDA speedrunning Championship 2003 : Contest Five

  1. The contest is being run on e2m5. But not just the regular old e2m5. Because YOU demanded it it's going to be a collectathon and you'll need these files to make it work.
  2. There are two types of run being contested. Easy (skill 0 with monsters) and Easier (skill 0 without monsters). See the text file that comes with the download for more details.
  3. The Winner in each category will be the person who exits in the fastest time.
  4. Name your files in this format: c5_m/nm_yourname.dem, c5_n/nm_yourname.txt. For example, a no monsters run demo might be called c5_nm_richard.dem
  5. Entries should be sent to sda_contest@planetquake.com, not the regular SDA e-mail address. Any mail sent to this address should generate an automatic reply informing you we have received your demos. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A REPLY THEN CHANCES ARE WE HAVEN'T RECEIVED YOUR DEMO! If this is the case then either try again, catch one of us on ICQ, go to our IRC channel or post something on the Message Board.
  6. All standard rules apply.
  7. Deadline is Midnight CET, Sunday September 7th 2003.
  8. Any questions or queries, mail us.
  9. Good luck and happy running!

The big question was always "Is it worth wasting a few seconds taking the pent and quad?"

Most people thought it wasn't, but two people, Robert and Ivan, thought it was. And since Robert Axelsson was the clear winner I'd have to agree that it was probably worth doing. :-)

The fastest non-quadders were Martin and Arturo with the rest of the field not far behind. Except Michael who has fallen victim to the old curse of SDA, whereby you lose all your skills when you join the team. (Well, except for Stubby, I suppose. And Lodis. And Nolan. In fact it's only me. Maybe we just weren't very good to start with. :-/)

It was good to see such a huge variety of routes. A huge well done to everyone that took part.

There's no doubt here that the pent route was faster, as Robert demonstrated that a quad-rocket is a very effective means of getting monsters out of your way. Anders took the second place slot and newcomer Ripah shouted his arrival with third place.

Since it was such a cool demo I also did a quick recam of Robert's winning entry which you'll find in the download. It's nothing too fancy, I set myself a maximum time limit of one hour to recam it so there's a few missing entities here and there.

All Monsters demos available HERE.

That brings us to the end of Contest #5. Congratulations to Robert, Martin, Ken, Anders and Ripah for taking the top spots.

There were a few less entries this time around but since it was quite a challenging contest and it only ran for 3 weeks I suppose that's not too much of a suprise. Hopefully everyone will be well rested for the next contest, coming very soon...

What's this done to the Championship 2003 League? Go and have a look, I'm not telling. :-)

Ciao.

The winning demos are available HERE and, finally, all demos can be downloaded HERE.
