Flavio Quadros

General Information

You live in (city & country)?
Greater São Paulo, Brazil. Born here, still stuck here.

Your birthdate (or age)?
13th March 1990 (started speedrunning at 15, I'm 19 as of writing o.O)

Your occupation/job/studies?
I currently study Mechanics Engineering. I'm quite a nerd, as you'd expect.

Your hobbies?
Apart from Quake, I like to watch movies, play soccer or basketball with my friends (even though I suck at it), etc.

Your email/icq/mirc/homepage?
The one I use for Quake stuff is "gincobloba" at gmail. I put up this site some time ago: www.freewebs.com/supimpaquake to organise my Quake achievements. I lost the passwd for that free host thingy, so I couldn't update it even if I wanted to ;) Few free to add me on msn as well: "fadq_9" at hotmail.com

Your music taste?
I like good music, regardless of genre. To cite some random few: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Joshua Radin, Rage Against the Machine, Eminem (older songs), BB King... But it's not about the groups either, it's each individual piece of music.

Anything you want to add here (about yourself)?
It's always interesting to see how internet ppl look like in real life. But nah, I'm not the first black quake speedrunner, or the first one-eyed, or the most beardy or anything special :/

Quake-related Information

Your nickname (story behind it)?
GinKo, from Ginkgo biloba. No reason other than it sounds funny. Also, some of my friends call me fravo, as they're japanese :P

Your Quake config (key bindings, etc.)?
WASD for running (always run off), mouse2 jumping, 1234REQF for weapons, G for recording, K for kill, UIOP for hfr, MNB for god/impulse 9/impulse 255, X for noclip, Z for genocide, L for notarget. Just like gaming gear, scripts are for wannabe pussies :)

Size of Quake directory on your HD?
Quite a few gig's of maps/packs and demos. Hundreds and hundreds of failed record attemps by me also.

Your computer (processor/videocard etc.)?
Currently, some Dell shit. Pentium D and some other stuff, pretty boring, trust me.

Quake settings (resolution, version etc.)?
JoeQuake-GL in 640x480 with regular settings

First contact to speedrunning (when, how etc.)?
July 05, there was a thread in a GTA forum about how fast people completed the game, some random dude linked to SDA and it didn't took much for me to get to the Quake section. The first demos I saw were the videos from the msrj contest. Later I shook the dust off my Quake cd and downloaded all the QdQ stuff.

First speedrunning demo?
I was having trouble to get into the tables, but then came Jaakko and I thought "hey, there's someone I can beat!". Sadly though, I couldn't :) Later, Mandel wrote me an e-mail teaching how to bunnyhop and a few months after my first attempts, I got frbt_119 ER (in 17/1/06), which I later improved.

Favorite speedrunning demo(s) from yourself (the one(s) that you're most proud of)?
end_034 EH, obviously, as my single id record. But as far as quality goes, there's better demos: I'm proud of the perfect spawn boost in tcoa_023 ER, the fiend boost in 155z_011 NR, the triple gj in 155t_005 ER and the zombie boost in ds_037 ER, beating Marvin in htr_033 ER... There isn't one that really stands out, so it's hard to choose. Maybe some day I'll get something REALLY special that changes my answer :)

Favorite speedrunning demo(s) from others?
Some are tight like a duck's asshole, like e1m2_029 ER or e2m5_025 ER. Some are cocainly-fast-paced like the ones in qd100qlite2. But one I particularly enjoy and it's not much commented is e4m2_117 NH by Peter himself.

Favorite player (overall/runs/100%/marathon/coop)?
The four most historically important + über pr0 players: Joe, Markus, Peter, Stubby. Then there's Connor, Mandel, Arturo, Marvin, Timo... (the list goes on and on). But there is/was plenty of talent in sda all around. Everyone contributed with something, that's the beauty of it.

Favorite trick in a demo?
I like unexpected monster boosts that enable shortcuts. Peter's shambler boost in tower, double gj in e2m3, fiend boost in e2m2, Ilka's double fiender, Arturo's 2*ogj+fiend in pb1, etc.

Favorite QdQ release?
Qd100Qlite2, but Quake done 100% Quickest is looking fine.

Favorite original Quake map?
Start.bsp :)

Favorite custom map?
Frostbite has a special place in my heart, as there's where I started in sda, and I TOTAL 0WN it :) msrj was fun, menk is obviously beautiful. The digs01 pack had quite some running potential as well. Oh, and wot is a waste of time.

Most annoying monster/map?
Anyone or anything, when in the wrong place, can be a pain. If you know what I mean.

Do you like Doom/Quake2/Q3A?
Yes / Yes / Never tried, but I played quite a bit of a mod called Urban Terror

What do you think of Quake now?
I like it because it's not about pwning n00bs or lvling up or having the best graphix engine or having such good online features you have to monthly pay to play it. It's just about pure, immaculate gaming; getting fun out of something simple. What we do today, with mapping and speedrunning is more of an art than anything else. I like it because my sda-buddies are not called XxXassassinXxX69, we all sort of know each other as real people and have this great comunity. I wouldn't do it if it weren't for you guys :D No point in playing if you can't enjoy chatting about it later. ...or making fun of Orbs.

Quake Purity Test score? link
"You answered "yes" to 22 of 132 questions, with a total value of 22 points out of 141, making you 84.4% quake pure (15.6% quake corrupt). This means you're not a deathmatch old fart, congratulations."

Anything else you want to add here?
Someone should do a proper SDA-Quake Purity Test... Really though, long live Quake and SDA!! Let us not die out like that. Speedrunning is a wonderfull way to escape the pressure of life. Cheers :)
