Doom done Quicker is a speedrun through The Ultimate Doom on Ultra-Violence skill, in 16:05. It is the sequel to Doom Done Quick, a similar run made in 1998, with a time of 19:43*. Almost none of the times included can truly be said to be optimal - the only certainty in speed-running is that you can always do it faster somehow. The demo is made in a similar way to the Quake done Quick demos - each level is recorded separately and then they are joined together with a third party utility to make a single run. As such it is NOT an official competition demo of any sort and is provided merely for entertainment. No one expects you to be able to do these times in one go. So relax. :). However, we would like to note that this is not a TAS demo - i.e., each level was recorded whole. We did not use the utilities that allow each level to be broken into smaller chunks to record. * = see special note, section 3.1 (1.2) Installation instructions Unzip ddqr-1605.zip into your Doom directory. This should give you: DdQr.wad DdQr.bat DQr-1605.txt routes.txt **IMPORTANT** Even though it is a .wad file, DdQr MUST be unzipped into your actual Doom directory, since demo playback does not function from subdirectories. To play a single episode, type: doom -file ddqr.wad -playdemo ddqr-ep? Replace ? with the episode number, for example: doom -playdemo ddqr-ep3 Or, to watch the entire movie, just run the included ddqr.bat file. You will need The Ultimate Doom version 1.9 to play back this demo! If you have an earlier version of Doom, you will need to upgrade it, patches are available from ftp.idsoftware.com. It is possible to play back episodes 1, 2 and 3 under normal Doom v1.9, but you can only play episode 4 with The Ultimate Doom v1.9. Please note that this run is NOT guaranteed to work with source ports such as ZDoom, Doom Legacy and Boom. If you want to watch the action in higher resolution, there are several ways of doing it: If you have v0.47 of DosDoom, this should play all four runs back fine, and allows you to choose your resolution with the command-line parameters -height and -width. If you don't have, and can't find, this version of DosDoom, DdQstats.exe - available from the QdQ site - should work too. If you'd like to try a modern port, we find that PRBoom and MBF will play back episodes 1, 2 and 3 OK, although episode 4 does not work. This should also go for LxDoom. However, none of this is in any way guaranteed, and if the demos seem to screw up, you should revert to Doom.exe. (1.3) Credits The people who created Doom done Quick are: Adam Hegyi playing, compilation and tactics Adam Williamson playing and tactics Jonathan Rimmer playing and tactics Vincent Catalaa playing and tactics Fredrik Johansson Title picture If you want to send a mail to the whole team (you know, to tell us how great we all are ;>) the address is: qdq-doom@list.gamespy.com The utilities we used included: DdQStats, a modified version of DosDoom. DosDoom is the Dos port of the Doom source code, which also has a few other features. It was made by Chi Hoang. The modification for DosDoom to make it possible to start with the right stats was done by Yonatan Donner. DdQStats is also available from the QdQ page. LMPC by Uwe Girlich to connect the demos together. It is available from http://www.planetquake.com/demospecs/ (2) More details about the movie (2.1) Timing Just a quick explanation of why we say we completed Doom in 16:05. Doom shows times for every level, except the last levels in every episode. But since it is possible to find the exact times of those as well using LMPC, we decided to include them as well. So the 16:05 time includes all 32 levels in this recording. (We didn't go to the secret levels, because it's just a waste of time.) It does NOT include millisecond times for each level. What does this mean? Well, it is possible to find out the exact time for every run, down to the milliseconds, which Doom always rounds down (0:09.97 will always show as 0:09 in Doom). Omitting these times has always been convention in speedrun timing, so we followed it in timing these runs and just added up the whole second times. (2.2) How the run was recorded Each level was recorded separately on skill 4 (Ultra-Violence), starting from the exact same stats we ended the previous level with. (It is possible with DdQStats, available from the QdQ page.) Then the demos were connected using LMPC into this run. However, the time for e1m8 was in fact measured incorrectly and is 0:27, not 0:25 as stated in the DdQ text file. To give an accurate comparison, the genuine E1M8, EP1 and DdQ times (0:27, 5:58 and 19:43 respectively) are used in our table.
