Hold tight - RDE contest results & other demos posted! - 7:03

As everyone seems to be giving away 'presents' here at PQ (thank you Will for embarrassing me with that e4m5 story :) I figured it was about time you got to see the contest results of the big RDE contest held when the pack was released. Yep, it's true, all demos have been updated! Head over to the Runner's Delight page where 9 fresh megs of demos are waiting for you...

And speaking of contests, don't forget to miss the results of the CSA contest at Mineral's.

Madcoop Mk II - 8:35

And here's another old madcoop. An easy 100% of Episode 1 in 8:35, done by Jesse, Ilkka, myself and Mattias Berggren. This can't count as a proper demo as there were a couple deaths, but it's good fun nonetheless.

12/24/1999 by Will

'Twas the Madcoop before Christmas - 17:44

I just thought I'd upload this as a sort of Christmas present to everyone. It's an old madcoop by Jesse, FAB, Sokrates and myself- an easy 100% of the whole of Quake in around 70 minutes! Unfortunately, it's only from my perspective, but I really didn't feel like uploading an extra 12 megs much in the same way you'd probably get bored of watching an extra three and a half hours of demos. There's no E2M3 demo, I'm afraid, but you'll just have to live with that.
Anyway, it features lots of grenade-jumps done without the counter with bad pings, not to mention much amusing cursing when things go wrong, and Jesse's dumbness at the end of E4M5 has to be seen to be believed =)

Merry Christmas, tout le monde.

Space Manoeuvres - 13:09

It's been a long time, but there is a Quake2 demo to update! New player, The Shaws has made this demo on Space for us: That's all for now! Bye.

Links fixed - 12:25

The Contoton demos' links from my last update have been fixed, grab the map and check out the demos.

Also, don't forget the CSA speedrun contest at Mineral's. If you still haven't seen the contest map by Attila, it's time to check it out now! The deadline for the contest is 19th December.

Some demos - 9:37

Yes, it has been quite a while since my last update. The reason is the usual, and I do not have time to update all the demos even now. The ones I'm going to update now have been sent a long time ago, before the new sdaincoming -system. As always, you can download the newest demos from the sdaincoming dir.

Contoton madness

Fabian Kollakowski and Mattias Berggren did an assault against Optic's records for Contoton.

Fabian did the demos on nightmare skill:

Matthias did the demos on easy skill: They also did a coop for the level: Easy 100% in 0:20.

Marathons

Markus has entered the marathon tables with an incredible record:

Then the demos from the usual marathonrunner, Marlo: That's all the demos for now. Incase you're interested in Quake2 demos and SP-maps, go check out Mr.Shambler's FPS Demos and Discussion. He has E-mailed me saying that he has posted several speedruns featuring new tricks, such as berserker punch jumps, double grenade jumps, double-hand grenade jumps. Sounds interesting, too bad that I've uninstalled Q2 ;)

Accessing our FTP-dir - 0:25

Just to clear things up, accessing our new ftp-dir really isn't that hard. You can use any regular ftp-client, like ws-ftp, cuteftp etc, and even your browser; click here to enter the sdaincoming directory (if you're using Netscape, you can use the 'upload file' option from the File-menu to upload your files). Now go check out Fabian's e1m1_054...

Important update - new updating system - 14:10

Hi there. As you know, updates have been getting quite scarce recently, even with the large amount of people doing it. We're just very busy people. So, we're trying out a new method. From now on, you will be able to connect to PlanetQuake and upload and download demos from a special directory. This saves us time in updating (we no longer have to upload the demos, the most tedious part of the update), and means you can get demos before they're updated.

Important: If you're uploading a demo, please tell us which demo it is, either by writing an email to the usual address, or by uploading a copy of the text file as well, outside of the zip. Else, we probably won't update it.

Anyway, to upload/download, connect to www.planetquake.com using an FTP programme, with username and password both set to sdaincoming and go to the sdaincoming directory.

Hopefully this will go well, let's hope there are no problems =)

Two Full Moons and a Trout - 16:42

At last, the long awaited update, and we have a grand total of 1 demo to give you. The star of the show is new player, XxSOULxX, who has sent me it no less than four times (maybe more), but it's definately a happy ending as it finally gets posted. Like the Ram Trilogy gatecrashing an ATB party, the cheesiness ends, and onto...

Quake2 done Too Quick?

Work has started (some time ago in fact) on a skill0 version of Q2dQ2, which we hope will become a proper movie. Expect a release sometime next millenium =)

Lots of cool Demos! - 0:27

Once again, a massive amount of demos. You'll find all kinds of demos: Normal single player demos, Normal coop demos, Marathons, and even Coop marathons. Enjoy the demos :)

'Normal' demos

Markus Taipale:

Optic: Alexander Osipov: Thomas Stubgaard: Marlo Galinski: Tim Doherty: Ilkka Kurkela:

'Normal' Coop demos

The second one is by Tommi Kyntola & Kari Valtiala: The third one is a 3-player MadCoop(TM) by Ravage, Shine & Mari Loli:

Marathons

Marlo has done something really impressive:

Kåre Slettnes: Optic: Tim Doherty: Ilkka Kurkela:

Coop Marathons

Robert Axelsson & Alexander Lindgren:

Last but definitely not least, a 4-player MadCoop(TM) by Mattias Berggren, Magnus Persson, Gunnar Rydberg, and Fredrik Egerstad: That's all for now. Incase you didn't know yet, I'm having a speedrun contest at Mineral's for my new map. The deadline for the contest is 19th November, there's still enough time for you to record your demos :)

11/2/1999 by Will

Tidle Protaxis - 4:28

Hi there. I've lost all the demos people have sent me. If you've sent a Quake2 demo that hasn't been updated, please send it to me.

Some time ago (sorry for the delay!) Brenda EP of Brenda's Game Page pointed me towards the "Iron Maze" on her page. It's basically a huge (huge huge) maze for Quake2. Take a look at it if you like, but you'll have trouble finishing it even with the solution =)

Now, if you haven't done so already, go and check out Mineral's cool Quake map.

New level & contest at Mineral's - 6:33

After quite a lot of work I've finally managed to finish my new SP level, The Mining Complex. The level is available at Mineral's and you should head on over there to check it out at once. In addition to a new SP experience, you'll have lots of fun trying to win the speedrunning contest, which I've set up for the map. So, get speedy! :)

10/24/1999 by Ilkka

The long awaited Marathons - 5:56

Here goes a lot of marathons that have been laying around, apologies for the delay on these demos. From now on, send your marathons to Stefan, his E-mail address is schwoon@in.tum.de. If you want to take a look at the marathon table, click here. Anyway, check out these crazy singleplayer marathons and enjoy the first coop (and even madcoop!) marathons. Here they go...

Optic:

Marlo Galinski: In addition to those ID marathons, he did _all_ easy 100% marathons for Hipnotic: Will Marsh: Kimmo Polvivaara: Coop Marathons

Robert Axelsson and Alexander Lindgren:

Marlo, Fab and Stefan did two Madcoops(TM): That's all for now. The new single-level demos will be updated later.

10/15/1999 by Ilkka

This week's Q1 demos - 9:13

Here goes lots of nice demos; many of them are ID improvements. In addition to singleplayer demos, you'll find some excellent Madcoops(TM)... :)

Singleplayer demos

Attila:

Markus: Thomas Stubgaard: Tommi Kyntölä: Marlo: Alexander: Multiplayer demos

Stefan visited Marlo & Fabian in real life and the trio made some really cool Madcoops, enjoy:

Fabian and Stefan:

Non-demo Q2 stuff - 1:15

Sorry for the lack of Q2 updates recently. I have demos to post but I've just moved flats and am busy with university so it will be a couple of days until I manage an update. But at least you know a) I'm alive and b) I will do an update =)

The winner of my Simpson's compy was Phil Hall. Congratulations to him! He will receive his prize shortly....because I haven't yet decided what it is. Watch out for more in the future!

10/10/1999 by Evan

Quake Demos - 21:36

Just a quick lil' update.

With his latest demos, Markus Taipale continues to dominate the Quake tables.

Tommi Kyntola and Kari Valtiala did a great 100% coop of E4M5 in 1:07, keep em' coming guys!

10/9/1999 by Ilkka

Q1 demos, finally - 2:52

Apologies, there has not been too many updates lately. The reason for this is the usual, being busy all the time. However, I found time to update today and I'll try to update again as soon as possible.

The demos

You should check out some of these new demos, as they are pretty cool. Here goes the normal demos (not going to update marathons) from the last two weeks or so. Starting with...

...Optic. He has produced 12 demos:

Alexander has done some impressive demos, including a massive ID improvement:

Fabian has been active as well:

Stefan did three important demos. The Black tables and IKSPQ tables are finally filled up completely:

Marlo Galinski has not been idle either:

In addition to Alex, Markus Taipale has been able to improve an ID record as well:

Johan Nilsson sent his first Speedrun to SDA:

Carl Tholin is back after a long break:

The new Mexx demo from Mr-J[!!] for this update:

Warren Hammond sent his first single player record to SDA:

Last but not least, Tim Doherty managed to improve his long Dissolution record:

Phew, that's quite a few demos for one update. We're still having problems with changing the records on the tables, so the old records are still on them.

9/25/1999 by Will

More Q2 'goodness' - 16:15

Don't you wish people would stop saying 'goodness'? It kinda gets on my nerves. And by the way, I am aware of the irony of using the word in order to decry it, so don't bother pointing that out. Instead, email me if you know the 'Simpsons' episode I took that from and win a mystery prize! =)

On the subject of email, could any mail be sent to my new address please. Thanks.

Now, onto the demos!

Newcomer Alexander Moller sends in his first (duh) demo:

Igor Rebolj complements his hard waste3 run with an easy one of the same time:

I managed two demos as well:

That's all for now. Catch ya on the flipside dudemeisters!

9/20/1999 by Ilkka

Miscellaneous Q1 demos - 6:16

I recorded two demos:

Markus improved one of his records:

Thomas Stubgaard improves his record even more:

Marlo improved Matthias' recent Mexx8b runs:

Tim Doherty did his first demo, improving the longest record ever:

Last but not least. A new trio, Josh Zayas, Warren Hammond and Bruce Wayne did two mad coops:

I had some trouble when changing the tables. Hence, the old records are still on them.

Slide MOD -demo collection

You may want to check out a new collection of demos that some people have done for the Slide levels. Head on over to this page to grab the demos. Incase you didn't know yet, Slide is a Quake MOD in which you can ride a hoverboard; really fun. The mod can be downloaded here. Interesting stuff :)

9/18/1999 by Will

Mini Q2 Update - 8:23

Hello again. It seems I only missed one demo out of yesterday's update, and it's a great one from Filip:

Actually I have another to post, but I don't know who it's by. So, if you sent in an easy city1 run, write and tell me what time you got.

You may have noticed that the Q2 database is pretty messed up. Apparently it's been moved onto a different server or something, so I can't get at it right now. /me goes off to pester Chris some more...:)

9/17/1999 by Will

Shock horror - A Q2 update! - 14:48

As you may have noticed, things haven't been too busy on the Q2 front at SDA. Gerald no longer has the time to update the demos, so I agreed to fill in for him. For those of you who don't know me (for shame!) I've been speedrunning for quite some time, and helped contribute to Q2dQ2. We have 17 demos to bring you, and I apologise as best I can to those who sent in demos around half a year ago (certainly seems like it).

Mr-J[!!] kicks us off with two boss1 demos:

Newcomer Bong gives us these demos:

Another new runner, Igor Rebolj sends in this demo:

Filip Söderholm and Jesper Lund sent in demos for the same map:

Finally, I contribute 2 demos on my favourite map :)

This being my first update, I've probably made loads of mistakes and forgotten demos etc; if you find a broken link or missing demo, or even want to congratulate me (a drink'll do nicely thanks), mail me.

9/17/1999 by Ilkka

All the Mexx tables filled! - 4:55

Matthias Belz has done a huge amount of work filling up the tables lately. For this update he did _all_ the remaining demos for the Mexx tables, and improved two old records. These demos include some really hard tasks such as Mexx8b nightmare 100% and Mexx9d nightmare run, the longest nightmare run ever. Anyway, if you don't have the Mexx levels yet, it's time to download them now. Here are the links to CDROM or Sunet m-o level directories.

Then to the tablefillers:

Matthias also found a weird trick in Mexx8b:

That's all for now. There are some really cool demos by others still to be posted. I'll update them as soon as I have time.

9/9/1999 by Evan

More Demos, 9/9/99 :) - 15:49

Watch out, there are some great new demos in this update!

Original Quake

First off is Markus Taipale, going to try RDE Markus?

Atilla improved one of his older records by a second.

New player, Nagasaki, improved an ancient demo.

Custom Demos

Fabian did a a good number of demos.

Marathon Runs

Marlo doesn't give up on the marathon runs.

Marathon runs are found here, I wasn't able to upload the other marathon run of his but when my internet stabilizes I will.

Coop Demos - 15:38

Hi, sorry for no updates from me. I still haven't received all my mail because I have 135+ mails and most with attachments. Cameron and I have gotten back into coop and made a few demos.

All of which are new to the tables. When I finish with my heavy mail download I will update some more demos.

9/7/1999 by Ilkka

Update -Demos - 9:23

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I have been really busy lately. Anyway, people have recorded quite a lot demos for ID & custom levels during the last couple of weeks; total 18 new demos.

Thomas Stubgaard did his first SDA demo, an ID -record:

Optic produced six demos:

Marlo has done some nice custom level demos:

Fabian spent some time on The Forsaken Citadel:

Mr-J keeps up the Mexx madness:

Then we have some new co-op demos,

Josh Zayas & Warren Hammond did three records:

Me and Juho improved the BBelief5 record:

That's all for now. Incase I forgot any (not marathon/RDE) demos, send mail. Please remember, when you do the .txt for your demos, don't forget to mention how much you improved the previous record, and who had the previous record. That helps a lot on updating, thanks.

New RDE demos - 4:04

Over at the Runner's Delight page new demos have been posted, go check 'em out.

Demos - 9:48

Some more demos for the 'non-RDE' maps, starting with an ID record...

... by Alexander Osipov:

Marlo Galinski improved two easy 100%s:

The fastest demos ever

Yes, you read correctly. The fastest demos ever, coop runs on Well of the Lost Souls by me & J-J:

Can anyone do this on single player? :)

Beyond Belief demos

Although the Beyond Belief tables have been on a 'break' for some time, there are still some demos to be posted. First of all, I recorded a demo for BBelief3:

A couple of weeks ago we did a coop with J-J on BBelief5, but I forgot to post it. Today, Warren Hammond & John Zayas sent a coop for the same level, but their time was one second slower. I'll post both of the demos here, as 1) the routes are different 2) they didn't know about the 'old' record.

Finally, when the SCBB -project was released a couple of months ago at QdQ, the both 100% demos for BBelief1 were improved. About the time to get these demos posted :)

8/22/1999 by Jesse

Oh yes, I forgot.... - 17:04

Ages ago Mattias and Fredrik Egerstad submitted a coop easy 100% marathon run of episode 1 in 6:41. It was a nice set of demos, however, the two forgot to do e1m8, so it was not a valid submission. We've known about this for very long now, but I guess we never got round to fixing it; better late than never. Check out the Marathon page for the current marathon-records.

I've also just received an amazing demo from Ilkka which I posted at the RDE page, where I will be doing a full update soon.

8/22/1999 by Jesse

CoopWorld & Fisheye - 12:37

Co-op in QuakeWorld?

I'm not sure exactly how much, but I do know I heard "Oh god this lag sucks, I wish coop was possible in QW" a LOT of times during madcoop. You can imagine my excitement when I got a mail from MoG mentioning a CoopWorld mod! Well, I downloaded the thing, and tested it with the Madcoop team on saturday, but it wasn't far as cool as I had hoped. Okay, it HAD monsters in QuakeWorld, but that was basically where the good stuff ended. Monsters kept respawning 3 or 4 times (probably the author's idea of creating more of a challenge), and all the DM weapons were still in the levels (yes the RL in e1m1 too). Speedrunning would be completily impossible as the mod uses the DM starts as spawnspots, and not the coop starts. These problems didn't seem fixable, however I didn't spend too much time trying to work it out. If it has your interest, check out the CoopWorld site.

Episode 1 done Quick with FOV 250!

While cleaning out my bookmarks I stumbled on the Fisheye Quake page again, which is maintained by PQ's Aardappel. Fisheye Quake is basically a modified version of the executable, based on the (unreleased) source code that lets you use FOV's higher than 180, any FOV you want to be precise. It's very useful for DM I suppose, but that's not what this is on SDA for. The cool thing about this is that the page has a movie available of the easy SDA runs of episode 1, played back in FisheyeQuake with FOV 250! It's for you high-bandwidth types only (unless you're a real fanatic), as the file is a big fat 34 meg AVI. Anyway, still very entertaining and highly recommended, get it here (34M).

"Non-RDE" demos - 11:10

While most of the people have been busy recording demos for RDE, some people have done demos for the 'usual' custom maps. Also, Attila and Max Rebo have managed to beat one ID map record each. Here goes total 36 demos, enjoy!

Matthias Belz fills up the tables with 23(!) demos...

...and improves my Mexx1 runs with a new route:

Daniel Lindberg recorded four demos:

Fabian Kollakowski did two demos:

People who have recorded one demo:

Ilkka goes Hipnotic again - 5:41

Ilkka has run all of SoA in 11:28 - Definitely worth watching and sorry for the delay on this Ilkka :-)

As ever Marathon runs can be found here.

More RDE speed - 3:39

More Runner's Delight demos for you, and pretty ones, too! I just updated them to the RDE page; don't forget to check out the table over there.

Here's the update:

Ilkka and Juho did two amazing new coops. Fab & Marlo did a cool demo too: Daniel Lindberg improves his 'old' RD1M2 record: Josh Zayas gets this demo into the tables: Kimmo Polvivaara is still doing very well one the end map. Here's two new demos from him: Arno Slagboom adds a new 100% on RD1M4 to the tables: First nightmare 100%
Nolan Pflug returns to speedrunning doing what he does best: Nightmare 100% running. Anyone with aspirations to enter the Easy 100% contest of RD1M3 will definitly want to check this demo out.

Two very impressive demos
Attila found the bar-trick in RD1M3! Woohoo! I received a lot of easy runs on RD1M3, but he seemed the only one to have discovered it. It's the only trick I'd never seen done in a speedrun before, so I just had to built in into RDE. Great job Attila! And finally, be warned, Ilkka has entered the Single Player-fray too...

8/17/1999 by Jesse

First Runner's Delight demos! - 16:49

Over at the new Runner's Delight page you can find the first load of RDE-demos. Since this is the first time RDE demos are updated, I wanted to list all demos I received, so that's why they are at the RDE page (I didn't want to spam SDA with lots of demos that are not going to be added to the SDA-system). However, next time, you'll find all RDE demos up here, so you don't have to worry about having to visit two sites for demos :)

8/15/1999 by Chris

e1m3 Coop Demo - 14:53

It's been a while since I've posted a demo of my own here (or any demos for that matter ;) but due to a relocation to California, being on a LAN all day, and finding a coop partner to play with, I finally have something worth posting: Thanks to fellow GameSpy employee and speed-running partner, Patrick 'Void' Cupka, for his assistance with this one.

8/13/1999 by Jesse

QdQ Missionpack 'Runner's Delight' Released - 17:42

RDE is out!! After ages of hard work, the thing is finally done. In case you didn't know, here's the update straight from the new RDE page:
The Runner's Delight Episode is a new 6-level Quake 1 episode, designed specifically for speedrunning, (but also suitable for single play and DM). This means that all levels offer lots of quadded-rocketjumps, doublegrenadejumps, barreljumps etc. etc. But, shortcuts are not required to finish the levels - they just provide you with a quicker route.
Stop wasting you time reading this, grab it NOW and get running!!

Ofcourse, RDE demos will be accepted here on SDA. We will add the levels to the database very soon, so you can send your demos in to sda just like you're used to. There are three exceptions: those are the runs that are used for the contest on the new RDE page. These runs are: All other spaces in the tables should be filled quickly, good luck :)

8/12/1999 by Ilkka

Demos - 13:27

Matthias Belz fills up the tables with seven new demos:

Fabian has produced four demos:

Mr-J[!!] sends more demos for Mexx levels:

Qurre improved both Flyer 100%s:

Finally, I have improved one SoA demo:

That's all the demos for this update, enjoy them, and make sure that you don't miss the RDE release party tomorrow! :)

Runner's Delight soon - 14:40

The Runner's Delight Episode, the missionpack for speedrunning, is nearing completion, finally. Still some stuff needs to be done, but the end is definitely close (and it ought to be, it's already later than the promised deadline). There's some further info and a cool new screenshot up at the Runner's Delight progress page, check it out.

Mr-J[!!] is back to Quake running with fast demos for Mexx5:

I recorded easy run for hip1m2 in 0:12, improving my previous record yet by one second. This must be optimized now...

Coop demos

Me and Juho recorded four coops for Hipnotic levels some weeks ago. Here they go:

Marlo and Fabian have done two impressive easy 100% demos for ID levels:

News On Colony - 23:13

While downloading some custom maps yesterday I noticed that the author of the map Colony has deleted the original off all the sites and replaced it with an upgraded Colony map. I think its only right that I clear the original colony demos and start new tables for the upgraded map, only because the original doesn't exist anymore. Sorry to all those (including myself) who have worked to optimise the Colony map but whats the point of a record if nobody can watch it. Anyways, I hope to see some good demos come in.

7/28/1999 by Evan

Small Update - 1:52

A broken keyboard didn't seem to slow down Thomas Bergendorff as he recorded a few nice demos.

Markus Taipale did a perfect Nightmare run of E4M2 in 0:34 improving his previous record by 1 second.

Marlo Galinski does an Easy 100% of Disturb in 0:44 improving Thomas's time by 1 seconds.

I've also done my first run in quite some time, mainly because I have a new computer. I improved my year old Court Despair Easy run by 7 seconds coming up with a solid 0:47. BTW: This demo was recorded before I downloaded QdQStats on this computer so it might say 0:48 on intermission but it is like 47.98.

7/22/1999 by Evan

Custom Demo Update - 0:30

Optic seems to be the 'main man' for this update so here's his demos. Thomas Bergendorff does a very nice Easy run of The Fatal Place in 0:51 improving Erik's ancient time by 6 seconds.

7/19/1999 by Evan

Watch Out Now! - 15:41

Daniel Lindburg has done a good share of demos.

Markus Taipale has cranked out a couple of impressive demos.

Attila and Peter haven't been idle either nailing the Easy E1M1 coop time to a blistering time of 0:22 improving their old time by 1 second.

Optic improves Tom's Nightmare 100% of Networld by 27 seconds to get 2:11.

Will's back! Improving Yonatan's H3M4 Nightmare 100% by 75 seconds(!!!) to get 3:54 keep them coming Will!

Also my friend Eclipse sent me this hilarious movie, you have to see this! (Quicktime required)

Demos updated - 3:14

Here goes the new demos at last. Some of them have been laying around for quite a while, but better late than never. There are singleplayer demos, 2-player coops and a couple of mad coops as well.

When you send demos, add a line like this to your .txt: "improved player's previous record by ? seconds.", thanks.

Singleplayer demos

Marlo Galinski:

Optic:

Janne Kalliomäki:

Fabian Kollakowski:

Coop demos

Marlo & Fabian have done also coop demos. Worth watching:

Mad coop (TM)

Here goes three Mad coop demos that I recorded with my friends on a LAN last week. Should be quality:

Unreal runs + 1 madcoop - 6:53

More non-Quake 1 speedrunning news: a few days ago, Mr. Shambler of TEAMShambler Quake Level Reviews posted some more Unreal speedruns over at his demo site Lost Spirit Custom Level Demos. But, unlike the earlier demos he did, these are *not* on custom maps but on the in-game levels, the id on...eh..Epic ones (yea, I wondered what they are doing at a custom demo site too :) Anyway, once again lots of rocketjumping action and other tricks in Unreal, so check it out.

My 'madcoop-homiez' and me did a new demo too :)

Quake 2 done Quick 2 Released! - 18:06

(And on my birthday too!)
The Quake done Quick team, best known for running through Quake1 at high speeds, are proud to annouce our first release for Quake2. Quake2 done Quick2 is a set of demos completing the whole of Quake2 on hard skill in a total time of 21:06. This release comprises the player-perspective demos - a recam by Zarathustra Studios is already underway.

Upcoming Q2 Stuffs - 10:05

I've been away for more than a week at an international bridge competition, just returned and still recovering from the lack of sleep. Anyway, there should be a Q2 update soon, probably the 6th... a special day for me. Also, big news: Q2dQ2 running has completed! We're now going through a series of beta testing and bug-hunting, and hopefully Q2dQ2 should be released before Friday. I've watched through the entire run and I must say.. if you were impressed with Colin's excellent 27:34 maddash through Skill 0, Q2dQ2 on Skill 2 (and in a much faster time) will totally blow you away.

Mad Coops - 2:06

The announcement in last update about the Mad Coops [tm] was a true success; many people joined the fray. Sometimes we were actually able to do a good run, but sometimes it was pure lag hell :) The first run was a 3-player id-coop: The second was a crazy super-lagged 100% of >Cult (modified version) with 6 players: We also managed to record two better demos on Doom2_08: Enjoy!

6/27/1999 by Jesse

Various news items - 7:33

Some good and some bad news today. Let's start with the bad.

A few weeks ago, a few SDA regulars told us we should have a closer look at the demos from a specific person, as they were all quite odd; monster behaviour was weird, as if the recording was done at <10 fps. Yet the demos contained lots of tricks and bunnies, both impossible at such framerates. When our tech-guys examined the demos more closely, they turned out to be recorded on a host_framerate setting other than 0, which we consider cheating as hopefully all of you know.

This person was Romanov Maxim. We have tried to contact him about this matter but sadly, he has not responded. Since his cheating was undeniably proven, we will take the neccessary steps and remove all of his demos from the system, even though only two of them have been examined. We will not accept any new demos from Romanov in the future anymore, cheated or not.

It's a sad matter, and it sucks to see that there are people that will go as far as cheating just to get their name up on a site where getting that little bit of fame is all there is. There's no money involved, we're doing this for purely for fun, and people like this are seriously spoiling that. His suckage is beyond words.

All of the records Romanov broke are now restored. Here they are.

Easy runs: Easy 100%: Nightmare runs: Nightmare 100%: Thankfully, there's some good news too: I got my t1 connection, finally :) This means that I'm now able to host madcoop running! wh00p! To test it, Will, Optic, Marlo and me gave it a try: we did a 4p easy 100% run of Doom2_01 in 0:16, it was great fun, even though not all pings were good (Marlo ran with a 400 ping). If you want to join in some madcoop action, contact me at ICQ UIN 10962661; I'm pretty sure there will be lots of it this week, starting from tonight (my server is located in The Netherlands btw).

Last of today's issues is RDE: I've resumed work on the very last level and will try to keep track of my progress on the RDE Progress page as much as possible. If you haven't already, make sure you download the Anti-Bunny Code and go to the Anti-Bunny Code Testing page to see how you can test it and how to send me your feedback - I really need this to decide whether or not to include the ABC! Thanks!

Speed Completily Beyond Belief released - 13:41

As a celebration of the 2nd anniversary of the release of QdQ's first production, we proudly present to you: Speed Completily Beyond Belief, two 100% episoderuns (easy and nightmare) through all of Beyond Belief. It's available at the Quake done Quick page in several formats (the full version of SCBB contains the levels themselves too, since some of you probably don't have them yet). Go get it!

6/10/1999 by Jesse

Unreal Speedrunning Starts - 1:12

In case you haven't already seen them, head over to the once again pioneering LostSpirit Custom Level Demos to check out the world's first Unreal speedruns. They even feature some tricks! Please note that you probably need a recent version to playback the demos (2.24), and even that is no guarantee the demos will run on your machine as Unreal's democode is not as solid as Quake's. Anyway, they should provide some very good entertainment so head over there now!

Dont forget that the Ware contest over at Mineral's ends tomorrow, so if you haven't sent your demo yet, make sure you do it before the dealine!

Third link of the day is the Runner's Delight progress page which was updated today with a screenshot from the intro cinematic.

6/8/1999 by Ilkka

Quake 2 Update: Better Late Than Never - 3:03

Ok... I know I promised to try my best to update last Wednesday, but something came up. I decided to buy myself a new computer, a P3-450 192mb with Riva TNT2, and man, does it rock. I used to be running Q2 on 320x200 software at 25fps, now I'm on 800x600 accelerated at 60fps, and the difference just blew me away.

Anyway, apart from this there are 21 new demos this update. Not as much as you might expect considering the delay, but this is mostly because many of the runners have been busy working on Quake 2 done Quick 2. By my current estimates, the first person perspective version could be available perhaps by end of the month.

Alright, let's start off with newcomer Paul Carlsson's demos Runs from Mr-J[!!] Runs from Sean Crooks, who clocks the most number of demos for this update: Runs from Jesper Lund: Last but not the least, one more fun from Aivars: Grab this update's packs:

5/31/1999 by Ilkka

New demos - 6:17

Right. There were some mistakes in my previous update:

1. Church 1:09 was nightmare run.
2. Church 1:11 demo was easy 100%.
3. The correct time for Romanov's h3m4 nightmare run is 1:20, not 0:46. Apologies.

New demos

We have two 100%s from Optic:

FAB did four singleplayer demos:

Romanov did two demos:

Marlo did four two demos:

Retard did his first SDA demo:

Hopefully I didn't screw up this time. More demos will be posted when I have time.

5/29/1999 by Jesse

New contest - 17:14

Woohoo, even though he's doing updates to SDA like a madman, Ilkka still managed to set up a new speedrunningcontest over at Mineral's. This time, the contest map was made by SDA-regular Attila; get the map and start running!

5/29/1999 by Ilkka

Lots of demos - 2:15

Here goes most of the demos you've been sending during the last few days. The remaining ones will be updated when I have time. I'm having exams at the moment, so I'm not able to update too often.

5/24/1999 by Tangent

Quake 2 Demos - 9:36

Yes, sorry, I haven't been available to update the Q2 section for a while. Just found out that I have even free less time during holidays than during exams. Sheesh... What I need to do is to blackmail Illka into doing it for me I guess. Anyway, I should be updating on Wednesday.

5/24/1999 by Ilkka

26 demos! - 7:05

Woah, lots of demos for one update! I was quite busy during the last few days so I couldn't update these earlier. Anyway, some of the following demos are REALLY cool. Definitely worth downloading, enjoy :)

Markus Taipale strikes against my ID records:

Marlo has not slept enough lately. First of all he improved all of Matthias' FR Castle records:

Richard Skidmore did two demos: Asmodeus did four demos: Custom-demo master Optic submitted three runs today: Some madness on Mexx2, by Ilkka and me (it's been ages since I did my last run) All demos from this update can be found in one big zip here.

Runner's Delight Episode

The progress on the project has been good lately. For those of you that don't check the progress-page regularly (you should :), I set the ultimate release date to the 30th of July a while back; check out the Runner's Delight Progress Page for the full scoop, as well as today's news about the anti-bunny code and betatesting.

Hunter - 10:39

I messed up with that Hunter demo on my last update: The demo was made by Goetzenzar.

Anyway, Filip Söderholm sent a new demo for Hunter. He ran it in 0:58 just a while ago. Apologies to everyone.

Peter Horvath does two incredible new 100%'s! (I guess he's still got it!)

Kimmo Polvivaara improves Optic's E2M4 Nightmare run by 5 seconds getting 1:00.

Also, the SDA team would like to make it clear that all marathon runs should be sent directly to Nazgul and not the whole SDA team.

5/6/1999 by Nazgul

Marlo Galinski has run Quake on easy in 18:33, 2:01 faster the the previous record and 1:16 faster than the original Quake Done Quick!

SdSlite Demos - 5:06

When SdSlite was recorded back in 1998, the old hip1m1, hip2m1 and hip3m1 records were broken. As these demos started with the default stats, I decided to post them. Quality stuff :)

Marlo also did a coop with FAB:

5/2/1999 by Evan

Amazing New Demos! - 9:31

Markus Taipale attacks the original Quake runs again getting some great new times. Why is it Markus never comments in his text? Doesn't he have anything to say about his great demos?!

My old buddy Ilkka Kurkela has improved some times also.

Peter Horvath does a nightmare run of E1M4 in 0:30 which improves Optics time by 16 seconds(!) using a very impressive ogre grenade jump.

Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath did a couple of coop's.

Marlo Galinski and Fabian Kollakowski have improved Ilkka and Juho's time of E1M1 by 1 second getting 0:34.

As always it will take a little while for the demos to mirror so dont send any flame mails about broken links.

Exams Suck - 14:56

Nolan and I will be having exams until May 1st. Meanwhile, we do not have the time to update q2timer or the Quake 2 speedruns, so please bear with us through this... difficult period. Now, now, I know you all wish us well for the exams, there's no need to spam our e-mail boxes with good luck wishes. :)

Contest; Corrections - 13:57

New Contest up at Minerals

Ilkka and I have been working on a new speedrunning contest-pak, which has been released today. Head over to Mineral's to download it straight away. Unlike earlier contests, it features an intro-movie! Actually, it's not like any of the other contests, when you download it you'll find out soon enough ;)

Corrections

Last update I mentioned the new e4m1_019 demo, and said Marlo Galinski made it; I was wrong, it was ofcourse done by Markus Taipale. Sorry Markus. The error is fixed now.

Another mistake I made was uploading Marlo&FAB's coop easy 100% of e1m1: Ilkka and Juho already did this demo a long time ago, before M&F. Sorry all... Get the new 0:35, run now.

I got a demo by Asmodeus recorded on the level Area 51. Asmo got the level from /levels/a-c/area51.zip. on CDROM, but unfortunately, this isn't the Area 51 we have listed here at SDA! Anyway, I'm not adding the demo to the tables, but I can understand the confusion, so here's Asmo's 1:02 nightmare run to watch. Note that you need the level linked above. (The Area 51 in the SDA tables can be found here.).

He also did these runs: Finally, Ilkka did one custom run too: Runner's Delight

The RDE-progress page is updated with another screenshot.

id-demos

There are a lot of id-demos that need to be posted, we know (even one that has been waiting since january, argh!). Coming soon, please be patient....

Demtool and Marathon Runs - 8:39

Just a message from Stefan, the author of QdQstats:
Hi,

I probably didn't make this clear enough (although it's written
in QdQstats' textfile :p) In order to use the dem->pak converter,
one needs demtool in some directory that's in the PATH variable
(or, alternatively, one can edit the batch file and change the
line that calls demtool, adding the correct path).

Without demtool, all the demos will be separated and put into
one .pak, but they won't be chained which makes the whole process
somewhat pointless (or at least, the outcome is not as good as
it should be).

New demos - 16:01

Some new custom demos, and since all of the people that usually update id demos are lost, I decided to do them too.

Marlo Galinski and Fabian Kollakowski smashed a lot of pretty fast coop-times; they did 100% demos of the first 4 maps of both episode 1 and 3, and some others. Marlo also did some single player runs: Fabian submitted a really nice single player demo too: Newcomer Tommi Kyntola did a pretty nightmare 100% of e3m1: There are some more demos waiting; this week, promise =)

4/8/1999 by Nazgul

Ilkka goes Hipnotic - 11:21

Ilkka sent me two SoA easy runs a week ago, sorry for the delay in posting them! As ever these can be found on the Marathon Runs table.

Who will be the first to try a DoE marathon? :)

"(QdQ) under 20 (minutes) is doubtful" - Anthony - 2:23

I received this email from an anonymous user, forwarding to me a 2 year old email from Anthony Bailey (leader of the QdQ team) to the other runners in the QdQ Project:
From baileya@cs.man.ac.uk Fri Apr 18 15:18:44 CES 1997
Subject: Re: all 11 messages I got!

Here's a quick bit of crystal-gazing... It looks like we will beat the
initially proposed four minute mark on Episode 1 by a mile. I'm
figuring less than 3:30 for the entire episode! Episode 2 I reckon
less than 5:30 but there could be complications meaning changes in
either direction. I'll be pessimistic with Episode 3 and just say less
than 6:00 - I know the routes, but have little idea how long they
take. The same for Episode 4.

An entire run of Quake (all 4 episodes plus Shub - ignore the between
mission stages as the viewers are going to need breaks between all
that action!) will definitely work in substantially less than 25
minutes. Whether it can be squeezed under 20 is a bit more doubtful,
but that *is* roughly the sort of time we should be expecting.

Please don't save this e-mail and embarass me with it later when I'm
proved so terribly, horribly wrong on all counts! (c:
Now for a reality check:

Quake II Update - 1:35

Whew... 19 new Quake 2 demos. Sorry it took so long to update.

These are the demos from Optic: Aivars submits a couple more hard ones: Black_Out is back and finally doing some Q2 running: Mr-J[!!] submits his first Q2 run: Sean submits a lot of demos, and (surprise!) none of them are short maps: Grab this update's packs:

Quake Completed in 10:00! - 23:32

And this is no April Fool's joke. The Quake done Quick team has just released Fiend Run Lite, a speed run through of Quake in 10:00, morphed as a fiend. It is available as both a movie (check out the great models) and first perspective. Go get it now!

RDE Released! - 0:07

Finally it's here. Finally! After months of hard work, Runner's Delight is now officially released! To most of you, this will probably come as a surprise, and actually I was a bit surprised myself everything worked out so well and fast as I was fixing the last problems.

For those of you that don't know: RDE is a missionpack for speedrunners; it contains six new levels that are especially designed for speedrunning, but it can be played as a standard singleplayer episode too, and also has full coop and DM support.

RDE is now available as an 8 meg zip file over at the download section over at the RDE page.

Half-Life Speedrun - 8:31

It took a while, but the first (AFAIK) speedrun of the new generation of 1st-person-shooters is here, finally. Mr. Shambler from TEAMShambler Quake Level Reviews has posted a speedrun of the excellent custom Half-Life level Prisoner of Events on his demo-department over at LostSpirit Custom Level Demos. He finishes the second part of the 'episode' in just 0:21 (or something, see the included .txt); the demo even features a shortcut, so grab it now and enjoy. I had to watch the demo several times before I realised what the hell was going on in the demo anyway; it's probably because I'm used to ogres and fiends and such; flying headcrabs and bullsquid and other weird animals still tend to confuse me a bit =P

You may have to update your version of Half-Life to version 1.0.0.8; otherwise demo-playback errors could occur. Get the HL-patch here.

Marathon tables filling up - 12:21

We now have complete easy runs for all of Quake:
  • Optic ran Episode 2 in 4:32
  • Peter ran Episode 3 in 3:25
  • Ilkka ran Episode 4 in 3:59
There's still plenty of spaces left to fill so keep those demos coming! You can view the table here.

100000 Hits! - 19:33

Congratulations to Henning Schürig who became our 100000th visitor (screenshot), beating DooMfienD (who got 99999 and 100001) in the reload race.

It has been almost a year since SDA opened, and the SDA team would like to thank everyone for supporting supporting our site. We hope that you will continue to do so as long as speed running lives.

Twisted Speed Run Results - 0:50

After nearly 3 months of inactivity, the Twisted Into Form page has finally updated with the results for their speed run contest. Peter Horvath took top spot in the E3M1 contest, Jesse (no, not our Jesse) had the best time in the E3M2, and BurninSun won the E3M3 contest. Full results and links to the demos are available here.

Well, am I glad to see the results finally out. For a moment, I thought this contest was going the way of the VRGN Twisted Christmas contest (read the story from Yonatan's homepage)

Almost 100k Hits - 1:53

We're almost at 100k hits! Make sure you check out our hits counter at the bottom of the page, and take a screenshot and send it to us if you're the lucky one who sees the 100000.

(I copied the counter to the side menu to make things easier :) -Chris.)

Marathon Runs - 8:20

Stefan, the QdQstats author, requests that you use the utilities included in the QdQstats 1.6 pack to compile your marathon runs into one pak file. We think that it's a good idea too, as it makes it much more convenient for the viewers to watch your magnificient run. Please read the QdQstats manual for instructions on how to compile a pak from your demos.

Also, due to their size, all marathon runs should now be submitted to Nazgul (you know, that bastard with the 2Mbps direct connection to the US backbone) only. Thanks.

Oh yeah, I haven't had time to update the Quake 2 demos. Hopefully get it done near the end of the week. There aren't many submissions anyway, so please keep them coming in.

Lots of demos - 5:22

Optic made some demos after a period of relative inactivity:
  • Easy 100% of Black 3 in 1:27, 17 seconds faster than Marlo
  • Nightmare run of Black 3 in 1:22, 5 seconds faster than Stefan Pretty damn fast!
  • Easy 100% of Escape in 1:08, 7 seconds faster than Matthias
  • Easy 100% of Hotel in 0:43, 6 seconds faster than Black_out
Janne Kalliomäki improves the one level he's devoted to optimizing:
  • Easy 100% of IKSPQ2 in 2:10, 6 seconds faster than his previous record...
  • Easy 100% of Doom 2 map 1 in 0:28, 1 second faster than Stefan. We received another 0:28 run by Fabian Kollakowski, but we got Janne's demo first.
Benny Wong sends in his first demo:
  • Easy 100% of Black 1 in 2:57, 13 seconds faster than Marlo
Asmodeus, one of the guys that have been doing some coops lately on Cult (see below) did some single player runs too.
  • Easy run of The Hanger (flyer.bsp) in 0:161 second faster than Optic
  • Nightmare run of the same map also in 0:16, 1 second faster than Optic
Marlo Galinski does quite a few new demos:
  • Easy 100% of Arcane in 2:15 9 seconds faster than Optic
  • Easy 100% of PB1 in 2:14, new
  • Nightmare 100% of PB1 in 3:10, new
  • Easy 100% of The Well of Lost Souls (well) 4:54, new
  • Nightmare 100% of Armageddon 2 in 2:28, new
Apology of the week goes to Thomas "Panter" Pilger, which some of you might know from Compet-n. He sent us a demo on e3m5 a very long time ago, but it got lost between updates.
  • Nightmare run of e3m5 in 1:05, 4 seconds faster than Alexander Osipov
Coop demos

Fabian Kollakowski and Marlo Galinski have apparently formed a duo to be reckoned with.
  • Their first demo is Beyond Belief map 7 in 0:28, 3 seconds faster than Mattias' and Gunnars demo.
  • More demos: Easy 100% of ikspq1 in 0:57, 17 seconds faster than Ilkka and Janne.
  • Easy run of ikspq5 in 0:33, 1 second faster than Ilkka and Juho, using a cool new shotgun boost to the elevator button
  • Easy 100% of Doom 2 map 01 in 0:17, 2 seconds faster than Attila and Peter
  • Easy 100% of Doom 2 map 07 in 0:11, 2 seconds faster than Attila and Peter
Dan J and Asmodeus continue to run Cult, as well as another level:
  • Easy 100% of Cult in 0:34.
  • Easy run of Base of Disgrace in 0:34 3 seconds faster than Rikkert and Odie
Together with Jakey, they did two three-player coops:
  • Easy 100% of Cult in 0:27
  • Easy run of Cult in 0:18, adding a shotgun boost over the lava to the 2-player run
There are some more coops to post on the id maps, but I'll leave that to the other SDA people.

Marathon runs

While several people seem to be brooding on Easy All-Quake runs at home and finetuning them, Mattias sends in his second one already.
  • 21:49, 2:33 faster than his last entry, and '2 minutes slower than QdQ' =)
Ilkka hasn't been quiet either:
  • 9:02, which is a really impressing set of must-see demos...
BTW, we finally got a decent table to list the marathon runs! Currently it only list original Quake maps, but we'll fix one for other eps (The missionpacks, Beyond Belief, IKSPQ etc. etc.) as soon as they are sent in, so, keep those episoderuns coming!

Ilkka's submission - 6:53

The episode 1 rush is coming to an end...we received Ilkka's submission =)

Ilkka got the following times (from the .txt file):

Level Time Description
e1m1 25.57 This is good
e1m2 34.42 Used the armor route -> helps later on.
e1m3 45.44 Didn't want to risk with the zombies...
e1m4 26.35 One could GJ up to the bridge from the water to save 10 seconds.
e1m5 20.56 Not bad, 0:19 would be very good.
e1m6 11.42 This one is very good. Usually ended up with 0:13 or something ;-)
e1m7 14.13 The time sucks, but I didn't want to screw up so I played carefully...
total 2.57.92 Yes! Finally under 3 minutes. This improves Chris' ee1_305 by eight seconds.
We're still working on a proper table. Remaining custom demos will be updated monday.

Joining in the fun! - 1:59

Here's my first (maybe my only) contribution to the current madness here at Sda. Episode 1 on skill 0 in 3:05.

3/17/1999 by Jesse

First official episode runs! - 1:01

We have received the first episode run entries! Our current system doesn't allow us the enter the demos quite properly yet, so please be patient while we work on that. I can't let you miss these runs though:

Peter Horvath did an easy run of Episode 1 in 3:28.

The lunatic of the week would have to be Mattias Berggren though, the first player to submit an easy run through *all* of Quake. Yes baby, all levels. His time is 24:22. The run even features some difficult tricks, like the e3m2 jump for example. It also contains the first fish-rocket-jump I've ever seen =)

SDA Screenshot Of The Day - 8:12

Jesse, after some zombies refused to co-operate. (Image was slightly edited to censor out some naughty words)

BTW, if you don't already know, we are now accepting Quake Marathon Runs using the latest QdQstats v1.6 to completing each of the 4 episodes Ep1, Ep2, Ep3 and Ep4 in one sitting. Oh, if you're really crazy, you can also attempt to complete all 4 episodes plus End (i.e. the entire Quake) in one long run. Check out the instructions in the QdQstats documents for information on how to record multilevel runs. Good luck!

QdQStats v1.6 released - 4:56

Version 1.6 of QdQstats is now officially out, so get it now!. Nows the time for y'all to find out the TRUE meaning of the words 'annoying zombies at the end of e1m3'...man, once I finally got the grenadejump to work after a reasonable e1m1 and e1m2, those filthy bastards start throwing limbs at eachother, in stead of being 'cooperative'.....AARGH!! Anyway, you'll experience this soon enough too =) (got 4:06.53 easy ep1 btw, in an attempt to beat Stefan's time, 4:06.90, I guess that's my reward for doing the e1m3 jumps =P )

I'm quite sure you'll be able to beat that time though, so lets have those demos! (for God's sake, don't forget to ZIP them!!)

Ofcourse, the other stats have been updated to v1.6 too: SoAStats for Scourge of Armagon, DoEStats for Dissolution of Eternity, BBStats for Beyond Belief and, ZerStats for Zerstoerer.

Doom lives! - 15:23

Nothing to do with speed running, but..

One of the merry bunch at Gameslink IRC pointed me in the direction of one of the latest Doom modifications - zDoom, it's Doom but with Internet Multiplayer, look up/down and jumping - as it was meant to be!

Check out the zDoom web site for more information.

Episode Runs - 6:13

In the QdQ series, we see episode runs made up by multiple players recording each map seperately, and the best time for each map after hundreds of recording are selected for the final product.

Ever wondered what kind of time can be achieved if one single player has to run through an entire episode continously, without the capability to stop and save or load between levels?

Well, wonder no more. An upcoming release of QdQStats will soon allow that, opening up a new door to competitive marathon speed-running. Look out for it!

E2M1 Contest Ends - 6:34

After just over 4 months of running Markus Taipale has beaten Ilkka's long standing record with an amazing 0:07 second run!

Ilkka has posted a new challenge to run E1M1 in 23 seconds (or less) - head on over to Mineral's for more details!

Updates - 8:22

ftp.cdrom.com Problems
There's been a temporary problem with the ftp.cdrom.com mirror system, so you'll have problems downloading most of the demos from the previous updates. We'll soon get the problem fixed, once the stuffs are reuploaded back to cdrom. Now would be a good time for Gunnar to put his T1 into good use :)

base1 Controversy
There has been quite a controversy over the base1 :11.8 submitted by The Jackal last week. Meanwhile, I have decided to temporary hold off any further submissions for this map while we discuss with the Q2dQ2 team about the details of the strafe-jumping rules.

Delayed Q2 Update
Sorry for the delays in the update, I've been really busy the whole of the week with the reopening of school. I should be able to find a couple of hours tommorrow to update the Q2 demos before having to start studying for a test.

Demos! - 16:33

Finally, here are about all of the remaining custom demos. They are quite numerous; updates have really been scarce lately; for Quake I at least. Speaking of which, The Planet Speaks has an interesting article about of the highlights of Quake I gaming today (among which speedrunning, thanks Fargo for the mention ;)

Right, the demos.

Alexander Osipov stands up to Optic's reign over the custom levels:
  • Easy run of Armageddon 2 in 0:31, 2 seconds faster than Optic
  • Nightmare run of Armageddon 2 in 0:32, 2 seconds faster than Optic
  • Easy run of Eye Socket in 0:55, 3 seconds faster than Optic
  • Nightmare run of Eye Socket in 0:55, 4 seconds faster than Optic
  • Easy run of From out of Nowhere in 1:01, 5 seconds faster than Optic
Janne Kalliomäki did three 100% demos:
  • Easy 100% of IKSPQ2 in 2:16, improving his old record even further. Despite the brutal self-damaging violence Janne is displaying, this is a pretty fast demo =)
  • Easy 100% of Doom 2 map 08 (the Quake version, doh ;) in 1:44, 3 seconds faster than Mattias
  • Nightmare 100% of the same map in 2:15, 3 seconds faster than his previous record
Matte Berggren submittted one demo (and a coop, see below)
  • Easy 100% of Real in 2:37, new
Stefan Schwoon does it on Nightmare:
  • Nightmare run of Black 3 in 1:27, 23 seconds faster than Matte
  • Nightmare 100% of Black Final in 0:48, 8 seconds faster than Matte
  • Nightmare 100% of The Fatal Place in 4:55, 124 (OMG) seconds faster than Richard
Optic submitted only two demos:
  • Easy run of The Hallowed Halls (bnt2) in 1:46, 7 seconds faster than Marlo Galinski
  • Easy 100% of The Hallowed Halls in 2:04, 9 seconds faster than Marlo
Matthias (Belz) was mildly distressed about Romanov's 1:05 on Gatorman's Diversion from last update: "I can't believe someone else also played Gatordiv and came up with the same route. Damn, and I was so proud of that route." Almost directly after last update we received Matthias' improvement to this run, a 1:02 on easy and a new 1:05 on nightmare. However, shortly after that, Romanov improved the easy run by yet another two seconds, so these are the final times:
  • Easy run of Gatorman's Diversion by Romanov in 1:00, 5 seconds faster his previous record (or, two seconds faster than Matthias)
  • Nightmare run of Gatorman's Diversion by Matthias in 1:05, new.
Matthias did some more demos:
  • Easy run of Missile Bunker Bravo 7 in 0:10, defeating Rikkert's really old record by 1 sec
  • Nightmare run of Missile Bunker Bravo 7 in 0:10, 1 second faster than Rikkert
  • Easy run of The Well of Wishes in 0:17, 1 second faster than Rikkert. Didn't think this would be possible!
  • Nightmare run of The Well of Wishes in 0:18, 8 seconds faster than his previous demo.
You're down to only 3 records Rikkert, so if you're still alive, it's time to act =)

Apology of the week goes to Mr. Shambler, for telling him the demo he sent got beaten, while in fact he did have a record.
  • Easy run of Gods of Rapture in 1:02, beats Optic's time by four secs.
Clan Force 9 (well, two of them at least =) took a shot at the coop-Cult run Coen and I did and came up with a one sec improvement:
  • Cult, easy coop run in 0:19, by Dan J and Asmodeus.
(heh, Coen was so pissed and swearing because this improvement meant that his name's now dissappeared entirely from all coop tables, and he promised me to beat all of Ilkka's records WITHOUT bunnies within the next month =)

Mattias Berggren and Gunnar Rydberg made a cool skill 3 coop on Doom 2 map 01:
  • Nightmare coop 100% in 0:35
IMPORTANT: if we haven't posted your demo today, don't send any frantic email. This update posts only custom demos; if you made a demo on a regular id map (or one of the mission packs), your demo will get posted, but just not in this update. If there's a link messed up don't hesitate to tell us about it though =)

Custom demos... - 17:23

Just a short note to tell y'all the long awaited custom update is close...I've just finished another RDE level, so I'll update those demos as soon as I can. Once again, sorry for the terrible delay, but we're working on it.

2/28/1999 by Evan

Ilkka's Forgotten Demos - 22:20

Here are some demos Ilkka sent in a while ago but never got updated.
  • Nightmare run of E3M6 in 0:31 improving Markus's time by 1 second.
  • Easy 100% of Black2 in 1:16 improving Marlo's time by 14 seconds.
  • Easy 100% of Black Final in 0:39 improving Mattias's time by 21 seconds.
  • Nightmare 100% of Zerstorer3 in 6:15 new demo to the tables.

There still are a couple more of Ilkka's demos and I emailed him asking for them a while ago but no response, unlike Ilkka if you ask me.

  • Hard waste2 in :17, 1 second faster than Optic's old record.
Fredrik with his usual amount of demos:
  • Easy bunk1a in :23, equalling Optic's old record.
  • Easy fact1b in :09, beating Sean's old record by 1 second.
  • Easy mine2 in :35, beating his own old record by 2 seconds.
  • Hard mine2 in :36, beating Sean's old record by 2 seconds.
  • Easy mine3a in :16, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Easy strike in :55, beating his own record by 2 seconds.
Sean continues to play with short runs:
  • Easy hangar1b in :05, beating his own record by 1 second.
  • Hard hangar1b in :05, beating his own record by 1 second.
Black Viper isn't satisfied with his own runs:
  • Easy boss2 in :45, 1 second faster than his own record.
  • Easy city1 in 1:01, 1 second faster than his own record.

Mineral's updated - 12:35

Due to some technical problem, Ilkka wasn't able to update Mineral's the last few days. The problem still isn't fixed as far as I know, but at least the DM3-contest results are up now, so head over to Mineral's to see what funky new demos are up.

Nostalgia - 1:12

I was just clearing up my bookmarks when I noticed this page. I'm surprised the link to that page is still alive, and man, did it nearly bring a tear to my eye thinking about the good old days of speed running. Well, we've came a long way with Speed Demos Archive since then, haven't we.

Quake II Update - 0:47

15 new Quake II speed run demos. Next update will be Friday afternoon (Singapore time). Now that all the runs are open to all (I can already see people starting to joost for the best easy base1 time), any demos received until Friday will have to compete by the millisecond. After the next update, we'll be back to seconds and first come first served.

Aivar snaps all everything in the hard category:
  • Hard city2a in :29, new.
  • Hard city2b in :23, new.
  • Hard city2c in :26, new.
  • Hard jail1 in :31, 2 seconds faster than Sean's old record.
  • Hard jail2a in :30, 1 second faster than Optic's old record.
  • Hard jail2b in :44, 1 second faster than Black Out's old record.
  • Hard jail5 in 1:00, 7 seconds faster than Black Out's old record.
  • Hard strike in :58, 4 seconds faster than Fredrik's old record.

Other Quake II Running Stuffs - 10:53

Bug in the Quake II Tables
Yeah, the links to all the demos from the tables are all pointing to the wrong directory. We'll get that fixed soon.

Goals
If you are unsure about what you are supposed to do in each level, pls read goals.txt.

Read the q2timer guide!
Please make sure you read the q2timer guide carefully before attempting any runs. Poor Ilkka didn't use q2timer.ini and sdemoname and had to waste a fraction of a second to pick up a machinegun on base3 and ended up losing to Fredrik by 0.1 second.

First Quake II Speed Demos Update! - 10:48

Finally, the first batch of Quake II speed demos are in. Dominating the field are Fredrik and newcomer Aivars, with Black Viper contributing a couple more demos, making a total of 22 demos.

Aivars prefers to do it the hard way:
  • Hard base1 in :12, beating Col Korn's old record by 1 second. Aivars time of :12.7 also beats the :12.8 submitted by Fredrik.
  • Hard base3 in :45, beating Optic's old record by 15 seconds.
  • Hard city1 in 1:01, beating Black Viper's old record by 5 seconds.
  • Hard fact2 in 1:04, beating Black Out's old record by 7 seconds.
  • Hard lab in 1:54, new.
Fredrik prefers to do it in pairs:
  • Easy base2a in :17, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Hard base2a in :17, beating Optic's old record by 3 seconds.
  • Easy base2b in :16, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Hard base2b in :16, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Easy base3 in :41, beating Black Out's old record by 6 seconds. Fredrik's time of :41.8 also beats the :41.9 submitted by Ilkka.
  • Easy boss1 in :47, beating his own old record by 1 second.
  • Easy hangar1a in :07, beating his own old record by 1 second.
  • Hard hangar1a in :08, beating his own old record by 1 second.
  • Easy jail3a in :20, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Hard jail3a in :21, beating Optic's old record by 1 second.
  • Easy jail3b in :13, beating his own old record by 1 second.
  • Hard jail3b in :13, beating his own old record by 2 seconds.
  • Easy jail3c in :13, beating Col Korn's old record by 1 second.
  • Hard jail3c in :13, beating Col Korn's old record by 1 second.
  • Easy strike in :57, beating his own old record by 4 seconds.
Black Viper contributes a couple more:
  • Easy city1 in 1:02, beating Optic's old record by 3 seconds.
  • Easy boss2 in :46, beating his own old record by 1 second.
Competition is pretty heated in a select few maps, but come on people, there are lots of other free maps available! You can grab all the easy or all the hard demos in this update within one zip file.

I must be ill - 14:57

Another update from him? You can't be serious. If you don't believe it, take a look:

Peter Horvath gives us three beautiful easy 100% demos from the first episode of the originals:
  • Easy 100% of e1m1 in 0:56. Improves his own record with 3 seconds. Does a trick I've never seen before on this map.
  • Easy 100% of e1m2 in 0:51. Improves Ilkka's record with 3 seconds.
  • Easy 100% of e1m3 in 1:08. Improves his own record with 22! seconds. New route =)
Two Coops

Mattias Berggren and another swede called Gunnar Rydberg (welcome aboard =) had a go at an easy 100% of bbelief7. Here is the result: 0:31.

Another duo who's enjoying the pleasures of cooping is Attila and Peter. They made an easy run of e1m4 in 0:24.

100% Justin Update - 18:29

Justin complained over the lack of his demos in my last update, so I promised I'd do them the next day. Here they are, all 100% and all over two minutes:

  • Nightmare 100% of h1m2 in 3:03. Improves Yonatan's record with 76 seconds.
  • Easy 100% of r1m1 in 2:28. Improves Nolan's record with 25 seconds.
  • Easy 100% of r1m5 in 3:35. Improves Mattias Berggren's record with 61 seconds.
  • Nightmare 100% of r1m5 in 5:36. Improves Mattias Berggren's record with 185! seconds.
  • Nightmare 100% of r1m6 in 4:32. New.
  • Easy 100% of r2m5 in 3:32. Improves Mattias Berggren's record with 62 seconds.

Demos part 2 - 14:43

On with the custom Quake demos...

There were a few confusing submissions because it took so long before we updated everything; there were a few cases of multiple entries for some slots in the tables.

Top of the bill was the level Base of Disgrace with no less than 7 entries for three slots... Here are the fastest ones:
  • Easy 100% in 0:56 by Marlo Galinski, 13 seconds faster than Stefan
  • Nightmare run in 0:59 by Optic, 19 seconds faster than Matthias
  • Nightmare 100% in 1:09 by Optic, 27 seconds faster than Stefan
Another level worth mentioning is The Hallowed Halls - Marlo Galinski improved all records for it. Check 'em out:
  • Easy run in 1:53, 1 second faster than Gunnar
  • Easy 100% in 2:13, 15 seconds faster than Mattias
  • Nightmare run in 2:30 32 seconds faster than Mattias
  • Nightmare 100% in 3:51 26 seconds faster than Mattias

He also improved Ilkka's (!!Smiley) 100% of Avatar by 25 seconds...

  • Avatar, easy 100%, in 6:30
Some more Optic demos:
  • Easy 100% of From out of Nowhere in 1:26, 11 seconds faster than Thomas
  • Easy 100% of EarthWorld in 1:39, 15 seconds faster than Thomas
Finally, even I did a demo myself a while ago:
  • Nightmare run of IKSPQ4 in 2:43, 36 seconds faster than Matthias
These are the demos for now, I've been so friggin' busy with RDE lately, I've barely gotten any sleep last few days. I think I'm doing a fine job looking like a zombie at the moment =)

More demos in a few days.

Quake II Runs Submission - 9:37

Alright, I'm receiving too many runs. Please make sure your time beats those from the old SDA records before you send them in. Thanks. BTW, if you wanna join the Q2dQ2 team, now would be your chance to prove yourself Smiley

Comeback - 8:13

It's been a while =)

I'm updating the demos I found in my attachments-dir, but there's probably a lot I've deleted earlier. The updates haven't been flourishing lately =).

First off today is Marlo Galinski who did:
  • Easy run of bb1 in 0:16.
  • Nightmare run of bb1 in 0:17.
  • Nightmare 100% of bb1 in 2:11.
  • Nightmare run of bb4 in 0:20.
Markus Taiplae improved the easy run of e4m4 to get a 0:22.

Attila and Chroy runs together on nightmare e1m4 and got a 0:26.

Quake II Speed Running Starts! - 20:23

Finally! Q2Timer v1.11 is out, and we can all start speed running Quake II. Make sure you:
  1. Get or upgrade to Q2Timer v1.11
  2. Read the rules for Q2 running.
  3. Read the Q2Timer usage guide on how to setup Q2Timer for use with SDA speed running.
  4. Get the latest q2timer.ini.
  5. Check out the extra rules from yesterday's update.
Please note that only runs are available at the moment. 100%s are not available yet. Enjoy speed running.. I'll have the first Q2 update after the 96 hours...

2/13/1999 by Tangent

Quake II Running Delays - 6:56

Quake II speed running has to be delayed for a while while Nolan fixes a couple of show-stopping bugs in Q2Timer. Expect Q2Timer ver 1.11 in a coupe of days, and running will start immediately after. These are the basic rules which will apply to all Q2 running:
  • Bunny-hopping/Strafe-Jumping: We are using the same rules as that decided for the Q2dQ2 project. Bunnyhopping is allowed only to perform a trick jump to get from one place to another which cannot be done with a normal jump.
  • Timing: Timing is taken rounded *down* to the second.
  • Priority: If 2 demos of the same time are submitted by 2 person within one update, the one who submits first gets the record.

There are a couple of exceptions to the priority rule for the first 7 days of competition.
  • So that runners living in non-favourable timezones will not be disadvantaged, there will be a 4 days (96 hours) period immediately after the announcement of the start of Q2 Speed Running where all demos submitted will be judged by time to the millisecond, and the fastest time at the end of the 4 days will be the record. After the 4 days, we revert back to seconds.
  • Runners who hold records from the old SDA runnings have the priviledge of being given 7 days to equal their record and retain it. This priviledge disappears if someone is able to beat their old record by the full second, or at the end of the 7 days when the record will be given to the fastest time (in milliseconds) submitted.

If there are any discrepancies in the rulings, any decision made by the SDA administrators will be final.

Demos part 1 - 16:19

Woohoo, today's my birthday! Taking some of the pressure to update off my back seems like the perfect birthday gift (well, except for Halflife + Worldcraft perhaps ;). Anyways, here's the first load of demos that are waiting. I'm posting the ones that have been waiting longest first, in case you were wondering why I left out some of the other demos. More coming soon...

(Oh, and speaking of birthdays, happy birthday to Nolan as well, even though I'm three days late =)

Mr. Shambler actually improved two of Optic's runs by quite a few secs, using a really cool and very high double grenadejump.
  • Easy run of The Ruiner's Revulsion 0:26, 21 seconds faster than Optic
  • Nightmare run of The Ruiner's Revulsion 0:27, 20 seconds faster than Optic
Optic does a few demos (although a lot more are still waiting to get updated):
  • Easy run of Gods of Rapture in 1:06, 12 seconds faster than Richard
  • Easy run of the Disturbed in 0:47, 5 seconds faster than Thomas, 'getting closer to the optimal'

Ofcourse he did some 100%-demos too:

  • Easy 100% of B.C. Dwellings in 1:05, 9 seconds faster than Matthias
  • Nightmare 100% of B.C. Dwellings in 1:05, 10 seconds faster than Matthias
  • Easy 100% of Darkages in 1:08, 9 seconds faster than Thomas
  • Easy 100% of The Disturbed in 1:16, 10 seconds faster than Thomas
Mattias Berggren does some fighting on bnt2, The Hallowed Halls:
  • Easy 100% of The Hallowed Halls in 2:28, new
  • Nightmare 100% of The Hallowed Halls in 4:17, new
  • Nightmare run of The Hallowed Halls in 3:02, new
'Critters' has probably been the map which saw most improvements over the last few months. Because of our slow updating we received two 0:56 demos, this one from Max, and another easy 0:56 from Optic, which arrived just two days too late...but more improvements seem to be possible: Max says "This is the 7th improvement to this map! (...) And Fredrik, let it stay at 7 improvements" =)
  • Easy 100% of Critters in 0:56, 1 seconds faster than Fredrik
  • Nightmare 100% of Critters in 0:57, 1 seconds faster than Fredrik
More demos from Optic, Ilkka, Stefan, Alex, Matthias, Janne and others coming SOON...

Delay - 12:01

Some people have been complaining to me about the lack of custom updates, and not entirely without any reason I must admit. I've been very busy last weeks, and was offline most of the time due to network problems I had. The other SDA people don't seem to be anxious to update the custom demos either, so I hope to find some time to start updating the demos this week. We haven't forgotten them though, so please be patient...

2/3/1999 by Nolan

Quicky update - 6:56

I haven't had much free time lately but I can find time to post my own demo :)
I improved Matthias's easy 100% of h2m1 by 20 seconds to get 2:50.

q2timer
What can I say?
Hmmm... how about "its out"? Yeah you read that right. It was released yesterday actually... So go to the q2timer page and download the long awaited v1.10. This means that Quake 2 speed running will start again in a few days. Dont even think of sending us q2 demos until we post rules! Until then you can practice.

A funky patch - 23:57

"You just have TOO much time on your hands ;)" was Chris' reply to a mail we received from Matthias Belz this week, and I must say I felt the same way Chris did =)

Here is the mail:
"It bothered me that some of the levels on SDA support transparent water and some don't, so that you have to switch the transparent water on and off all the time when watching a series of demos. Well, I started to reVis the maps that needed it and I'm finished right now. I have revised 83 maps in total and made a Vispatch data file so that others can have transparent water too."
So, get the patch here and enjoy! Thanks a lot Matthias!

And you thought we were bad at updating... - 19:12

After 2 months of inactivity, Twisted Into Form has finally updated and promised to have the results for the speed run contests in one or two days time. Of course, that update was done 2 days ago, so... :)

Crazy Peter Strikes Again! - 16:36

Peter doesn't fail to impress me yet again doing another insane Nightmare 100%! He improves Optic's E4M2 Nightmare 100% by 28 seconds(!) using a new route & ogre grenade jump to get 1:42

Now excuse me while I find a clean pair of shorts :)

New Demos and Players - 12:00

A few more new demos, let's start with:

Optic

  • Nightmare 100% of e2m1 in 1:33 - 6 seconds faster than Marlo Galinski
  • Easy 100% of hip2m4 in 1:46 - 12 seconds faster than Matthias
Marlo Galinski did a Nightmare 100% of e3m1 in 1:50 - 2 seconds faster than Will

Two Newcomers

  • Romanov Maxim did an Easy run of gatordiv in 1:05 - 1:52 faster than Optic! - some very cool tricks here :)
  • Kåre Slettnes did a Nightmare 100% of e1m3 in 2:02 - 20! seconds faster than Will using a new route

1/24/1999 by Chris

The Next Challenge - 11:51

Ilkka has posted his newest challenge, hop on over to Minerals for a piece of the action.

1/21/1999 by Nazgul

Nazgul takes the plunge... - 11:04

OK all this is my first update so apologies if I've made any mistakes :-)

Some new id demos:

Newcomer Marlo Galinski did a 100% of e2m1 in 1:39 on Nightmare - one second faster than Will.

Markus Taipale improved his easy run of e3m6 by 1 second to get 0:29

Muriel did three demos:

  • Nightmare run of e3m5 in 1:09 - two seconds faster than Evan
  • Nightmare run of e4m7 in 1:00 - two seconds faster than his previous demo
  • Easy 100% of e4m7 in 2:18 - eight seconds faster than Nolan!

1/20/1999 by Jesse

A few new runs... - 14:41

Here are a few new demos...but these are only about 20% of all demos we still need to post. I don't have that much time right now, so you'll have to do with these for the moment...

Optic does a few new ones:
  • Easy 100% of Ephemerality in 1:00, 14 seconds faster than Stefan
  • Easy 100% of Eldencross in 1:06, 8 seconds faster than Thomas Bergendorff
  • Easy run of PSE1 in 0:37, 1 second faster than Ilkka.
Janne did two demos:
  • Easy 100% of IKSPQ2 2:17, 5 seconds faster than his previous time
  • Nightmare 100% of Doom2_08 in 2:18, 8 seconds faster than Mattias' record
Using a powerful fiend boost I improved Optic's easy Mexx2 run. While I was at it, I read in Matthias' 0:13 nightmare run txt file: "Much harder than on skill 0. This should be the optimal time", so I improved that one too...
  • Mexx2, easy run, in 0:11, 1 second faster than Optic
  • Mexx2, nightmare run, in 0:11, 2 seconds faster than Matthias
Matte Berggren did a nightmare run on Black 3: 1:50, new.

Stefan Schwoon did an easy 100% on The Fatal Place: 3:19, new.

Coop

Since there was a .map file included within 'cult.zip' I added 8 coop starts to Cult. You can get the modified level here. Coen and I did an easy run in 0:20.

News Archives - 21:06

News archives are now available from the misc section, incase anyone is interested. It's not a very clean way of doing it, but I'll come up with something better when I have some time to write a proper archiving system :)

1/13/1999 by Nolan

Crazy people - 21:18

Mattias is the first crazy person on the list... He did 100% demos of every black level, on both easy and nightmare skills! Talk about crazy :)
  • Black1 in 3:15 on easy and 5:13 on nightmare.
  • Black2 in 1:37 on easy and 2:48 on nightmare.
  • Black3 in 1:49 on easy and 3:42 on nightmare.
  • Blackf in 0:50 on easy and 0:56 on nightmare.
Oh, and he also improved Jim Paris' easy run of zer1m6 by four seconds to get 2:26.

Crazy person number 2 is Will... Why is he crazy you ask? Well, before today the longest speed demo ever was a 12:46 nightmare 100% of e2m6 by me. Will broke the record. He did a nightmare 100% (what else?) of r2m4 in 16:07. He says it took him a month just to learn the route, but judging by some parts of the demo, I'd say he never did get it totaly memorized. :) Anyway, a big applause is due for Will who now has "the slowest speed demo"!

Will did two nightmare other 100% demos two, but they're not quite so long:

  • He improved his previous e2m1 by six seconds to get 1:40.
  • He improved e1m3 by seven seconds to get 2:20. I'll bet David Coronat hated to read that...
The third and final crazy person (for this update anyway) is Ilkka. He's crazy just because he did two, three player 100% demos:
  • He 100% of e1m1 on easy in 0:29 with Juho and Juho-Jussi. This is 14 seconds faster than the previous three player demo, and its also faster than the 7 player demo...
  • The same three also did a three player 100% of e1m6 in 0:25, ten seconds better than the previous three player demo.
Ilkka's not the only one doing three player 100%s though, Magnus, Mattias and the other Gunnar did another one, this time e2m4 in 1:09.

Attila and Peter did a coop demo too, easy run of e1m5 in 0:14, three seconds faster than the previous two player run and one second faster than Ilkka's three player run from just a few days ago...

What update would be complete without demos from Optic? He did three 100% demos on easy skill:

  • He quickly improved Janne's e3m7_157 by eight seconds to get 1:49.
  • He improved Ilkka's bbelief1 by two seconds to get 1:52.
  • And he improved Setfans's bbelief3 by 18 seconds to get 1:40.
Markus Taipale took over the e3m6 runs:
  • He improved Evan's previous run on easy by ten seconds to get 0:30 using the candle jumps from Ilkka's nightmare run in 0:38 which...
  • ...he improved by six seconds to get 0:32.
Oh, and of course when I say "crazy" I mean "overly enthusiastic about speed running" :)

Tower Contest Ended - 10:52

Ilkka has posted the results of the Tower contest and I thought I'd p1mp it a bit as I won two out of the three sections :-) Check it out!

1/8/1999 by Nolan

All the demos? - 16:26

If I'm lucky I think I've got all the rest of the demos...

A newcomer to SDA, David Coronat, has improved the nightmare 100% demo of e1m3. Definitly a hard demo to be your first, I applaud any newcomer who starts with a nightmare 100% demo. Anyway, he improved Will's time by five seconds to get 2:27.

Ilkka improved his own nightmare run of e1m2 by one second to get 0:34...almost eight weeks ago. Apologies are due to Ilkka for us taking so long with that one.

Ilkka also did a few coop demos:

  • He did a 3 player mad coop of an e1m5 run on easy with Matti and Juho-Jussi. They used lots of teammate boosting to get 0:15, three seconds faster than the single player run.
  • Ilkka and Juho improved Peter and Attila's runs of e4m6 by one second to get 0:21 on both easy and nightmare. They say it's optimized :)
More coop...
  • Attila and his "inexperienced Quake player" friend Chroy did an easy run on e4m1 to get 0:18, the same time as Peter's single player time...
  • Mattias Berggren did a mad coop with Magnus Persson and Gunnar Rydberg [not Muad_dib Gunnar :)]. They did a 100% of e3m2 on easy in 0:46, three seconds faster than the two player 100%.
I can't forgot the only demo I've done in a long time. I improved my easy run of mexx10 by 37 seconds to get 2:27. One thing strange about this is that I didn't do the grenade jump I did the last time... I didn't know then that's its faster to not do it :)

I'm wondering if anyone was reading my plan... Then I'll know if I should bother continuing to update it. Email me if you think I should keep updating it.

Friggin' much to tell - 16:26

It took a while, but we're back in business at last! We know you have all been waiting a long time for a demo update, and we wouldn't want to disappoint you here it is: we've got over 90 minutes of new speedruns for ya =)

New demos

The following demos are mostly ones that have been waiting a long time to get updated. We know there are still more to go, among which quite a few regular ones, and they will be posted as soon as we are able to.

Optic strikes back:
  • Easy 100% of The Cobalt Palace in 1:18, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of The Forbidden Base in 0:52, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of The Mountain Base in 1:16, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of The House of Traps in 1:28, new to the tables. Lots of rocketjumps.
  • Easy run of The FunRun in 0:55, 3 seconds faster than his previous record
Mattias Berggren adds a few 100% demos:
  • Easy 100% of Doom2_08 in 1:47, 4 seconds faster than Stefan
  • Nightmare 100% of Doom2_08 in 2:26, 11 seconds faster than Stefan
  • Easy 100% of Mexx 5: The Terror of Tzeentch in 4:04, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of Mexx 5 in 6:01, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of Zer1m1 in 1:07, new to the tables
  • Easy run of Zer1m3 in 2:46, 27 seconds faster than Evan! Pretty good run for such a hard level.

He also did four Rogue demos:

  • Easy 100% of r1m5 in 4:36, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of r1m5 in 8:41, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of r2m5 in 4:34, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of r2m5 in 6:54, new to the tables
Matthias Belz did some of his regular chart-filling:
  • Easy 100% of BC Dwellings in 1:14, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of BC Dwellings in 1:15, 2 seconds faster than Optic
  • Easy 100% of Bubbah's Slate in 0:43, 4 seconds faster than Justin
  • Nightmare 100% of Bubbah's Slate in 0:41, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of Escape in 1:15, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of EvilDead Cabin in 1:31, new to the tables. Matthias has a really funny way of bunnying, watch closely =)
  • Nightmare 100% of The Cult in 0:57, new to the tables
  • Nightmare run of IKSPQ4 in 3:19, staring Death in the face at the exit =)
Ilkka provided us with some more cool demos, as usual.
  • Nightmare run of Critters in 0:19, 1 second faster than Optic
  • Easy run of Harm's Way in 0:03, 3 seconds faster than Evan. That jump was possible after all! =)
  • Easy run of Shadow over Innsmouth in 1:11, 11 seconds faster than his previous time. Sorry for not updating this one earlier Ilkka.
  • Easy 100% of IKSPQ 5 in 1:57, new to the tables
  • Nightmare 100% of IKSPQ 5 in 3:22, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of Zer1m3 in 5:25, new to the tables.

He did two Hipnotic runs too:

  • Easy run of h2m3 in 0:39, 5 seconds faster than his previous time
  • Easy run of h3m2 in 0:31, 8 seconds faster than Nolan
Thomas Bergendorff sent these:
  • Easy run of The Disturbed in 0:52, 3 seconds faster than Optic
  • Easy 100% of The Disturbed in 1:26, 9 seconds faster than his previous demo
  • Nightmare 100% of The Disturbed in 1:54, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of The Eldencross in 1:14, new to the tables
  • Easy 100% of Darkages in 1:14, new to the tables
Janne Kalliomäki submitted his first original id map:
  • Easy 100% of e3m7 1:57, 4 seconds faster than Optic. The accompanying text file tells us that he decided to do it the way he did because "killing ogres with an axe is a traditional Finnish way of fighting", at least if you read it the way I did ;)
Newcomer Romanov Maxim improved Matthias' Jawbreaker run:
  • Easy run of Jawbreaker in 2:14, 7 seconds faster.
Some demos were updated a long time ago, but somehow never reached the tables or 'got lost'. Here they are:
  • Easy 100% of Avatar in 6:55, by Ilkka Kurkela
  • Easy 100% of ByConToCon in 0:24, by Optic
  • Nightmare 100% of ByConToCon in 0:24, by Optic
And finally: a coop demo

Ilkka and Juho did an amazing coop: easy Harm's Way 100% in just 1:56! That sounds like a slow demo, I know, but I dare say it's close to optimized!

The massive zipfile

To summon disaster over your empty harddrivespace click here and here download all of these funky new demos in two big fat 4M zips! I tried to upload an 8M zip, but somehow ws_ftp kept screwing me at 80%, let that program burn in hell for eternity. Btw, the links to these zips might not work until a few hours after this update.

Misc stuff

A small notice about the custom level zer1m6: this level can be completed by simply slopejumping from the pool at the start to the trigger_changelevel. This week we received yet another 0:04. We are NOT accepting this run. If you understand what speedrunning is about youll see the logic behind this. What's cooler, watching somebody do a 1-sec demo (cause about 80% of the 0:04 in zer1m6 is movie) with one simple jump, or to watch somebody sneak past I-don't-know-how-many-monsters in no time?

For those of you that haven't been there: Mr. Shambler has opened a great custom level-review site which recently moved to PlanetQuake: http://planetquake.com/teamshambler. If you're into custom levels, this is a must-visit. It even features some speedruns!

Oh, and according to 'vague rumours' the Run of the Week section here at SDA should be reopening soon in a new and improved form...stay tuned!

New look - 15:23

Ok, so i hassled Nop to come up with a new news template layout for us and a few new graphics. Like em? So a big thanks to Nop for helping us out, and now you must checkout his kickass website where you can see countless examples of his rocking artwork.

GameArt

Oh yeah, the misc button doesn't do anything yet, that will be fixed shortly when we've sorted out what pages are going in that section :)

Couple of Demos - 8:07

Couple of Demos I did that I've had lying around:
  • The Gibplex in 0:28, Skill 3, 1 second quicker than Optic.
  • The Gibplex in 0:28, Skill 0, 1 second quicker than Optic.
  • E2m7, 100% skill 0 in 1:39, 5 seconds quicker than Nolan.
Still working out a few issues with the new system, if you have any comments feel free to mail me, also mail me if you find anything that is going whack.

Doom Speed-Running Lives - 18:18

Better late than never, the Compet-N site for Doom Speed-Running is up on HTML, featuring tables of fastest times for every single Doom level. Basically, the Doom version of Speed Demos Archive. Go dig out your old Doom disks (what?! you've deleted it from your HD already?!) and check it out!

New System - 15:56

Yes, it's up. There's lots of things that we still have to do in terms or arrangement, so you'll have to bear with us for a while whilst we get certain things sorted. Jesse will be doing a big update tomorrow, so stay tuned for that.

A few things - 10:49

Minerals
I had a quick chat with Ilkka Kurkela the other day (if for some insane reason you don't know who he is, then you shouldn't be visiting this site :) and thought it might be quite cool if he were to move his speed running page into PlanetQuake as an SDA hosted site. Anyway, to cut a short story even shorter, he was pretty happy with the idea so you can now find his page at mineral/. Ilkka's page is mostly a repository of speed runs he's done himself, and a placeholder for some of the really cool contests that he runs which have been extremely popular. A new one started the other day, so be sure to check that out if you haven't already.

Re-Design
Providing nothing major comes up between now and tomorrow with the new system, we should have it ready to launch tomorrow along with a hugh update! Stay tuned!

Progress Update - 11:10

Just so people don't bug me on ICQ anymore, the coding for the new site is complete. All we are waiting on for now is to get the coop demos into system, which I am leaving to the others, so bug them :)

Q2 Timer Problems - 0:12

You can now get an in depth explanation as to why Q2 timer is still not finnished in Nolan's .plan : http://cgi.planetquake.com/chris/finger.exe?login=radix@mail.planetquake.com. :)

Stoopid Map Contest - 8:12

Ilkka has gone ahead and made another one of his strange maps. I wander where he gets his ideas from for these things? :) An initial inspection of the shot he posted on his page leads me to believe that it's going to require one really whacky trick to complete this level, check it out!

Happy New Year - 0:00

Happy New Year to all SDA readers from me and the rest of the SDA staff, well, we haven't heard from Gunnar for a few weeks now so I have no idea where he is, still he's been AWOL before and reappeared several weeks later so I do hope he's going to be back. Maybe his exams were too much for him :)
