Demo update + rules - 2:20 AM

(2:26 addition) Holy shit I just noticed that SDA has passed 4000 total demos in its database with this update! Only 1399 of them are records though :)

Hey, sorry for the delay in the demo update... I'll start off with the demos that have been sent in for the PG episode that we added last update:

There's still lots of possibilities with these maps, folks! I was working on a marathon, but I was having some strange occurances related to cutscenes. If they happen to you, you just have to restart the demo for now, and I'll try to get them fixed.

Martin Selinus sent in two other demos, the only demos not on pg for this update.

Now I think its time to review some of the rules at SDA, not related to how to record demos... other rules. They were stated ages ago, but I dont think they are anywhere in the FAQ, so new people probably aren't aware of them. I guess that's about it. I hope that 2001 will be even better for speedrunning that 2000 was. It should be, after all the site was down at the beginning of this year, but not next year :)

Oh btw, it seems gamespy is incapable of keeping the one mirror that it managed to get for fileplanet, so for now you can only get demos from the gamespy ftp. (grr)

Merry American Christmas - 7:22 AM

Ho' ho' holy shit this is one big update! Let's start out with the new demos shall we?

Single Player Demos

Jozsef Szalontai has blessed us with a couple of his demos.

Sergi Cami has delivered his own Christmas present to us, in the form of a Nightmare run through E1M1 in 0:25, 1 second faster than Ilkka's QdQwav time!

Juozas Rimas did an Easy run of Escape in 0:50 2 seconds faster than Warren's time.

Cooperative Demos

Obviously the MP clan went overboard with their Christmas gift to SDA, sending in 18(!!) mad-coops!

New Level Pack - Phantasmal Garrison

Nolan and I have been working very hard on getting the Quake level pack Phantasmal Garrison ready for speed-run use. Nolan has even coded a version of QdQStats for use with this level pak, fittingly titled PGStats. Sorry, but I couldn't resist making some speed-runs for these new levels :)

You can download Phantasmal Garrison and the PGStats for it all in this one archive.

New Playing Type Added!

Head-on over to the Quake done Naked site and take a look at the new play-type just added!

New Dzip page

I have been working on a more professional Dzip page for quite some time now. We are intending to take Dzip beyond it's 'only Quake use' and maybe even compete against Winzip! The site is a little low on content right now, if you have any ideas you think would be helpful to the site then please contact me.

Merry Christmas - 11:57 AM

I can't think of anything to write so I'll just post two new marathon records.
I did a NH through ep3 in the blistering time of 12:49, which is 117 seconds faster than Justin's previous record, and only 118 seconds slower than qd100qr :)
Jozsef Szalontai did a NR throught ep3 also in a time of 4:40, which is 70 seconds faster than ShiNe's previous record.
Merry Christmas everyone!

No Optic in this update! - 10:55 AM

Well, there seems to be no Optic demos for this update (maybe he got a life?). Be sure to check the Quake done Naked page in the next few days, I'm adding a new type of play to the tables! Also, some new profiles for you all.

Single Player Demos

Nolan Pflug has found time to run some very excellent D1M7 runs!

Martin Selinus (baby Horvath) has done a couple great demos.
Daniel Hansson did a couple of runs to.
Stefan Schwoon is still alive! And he found time to fill in the Nightmare 100% of mcm01 with a time of 3:16.

Cooperative Demos

Martin Selinus and Sebastian Olsson have done some very excellent coops!

Carl and (ehh there was another player in this demo?!?) Johan have done a Nightmare run of E2M4 in 0:47.

Robert and Rickard reclaim their Easy-run record of E2M7 by getting a 0:32, one second faster.

I've done my very first coop with Basil de Vries (the naked runner)! We did a Nightmare 100% of H1M2 in 1:57, new to the tables.

Mr. Horvath isn't human - 3:22 PM

Mr. Horvath does it again. Another flawless demo containing various difficult tricks, including a voreball jump and yet another double-voreball jump to finish the demo with!!!! As he says himself "This demo speaks for me" and my oh my it certainly does. It simply doesn't get any better than this.
(well, except for the upcoming Qd100Ql2 which will contain even cooler demos :) So grap a chair, put yourself in a nice comfortable position, turm the speakers up and watch the god damn demo. NH of e4m2 in 1:17 Oh, and check out the recammmed demo too for another blast :)

Demos + Player Profiles - 10:30 AM

Come on you guys...how hard can it be? Keep those profiles coming and don't forget about the pics too (check out Jesse's pic....) We've got a descent amount already though. We even received one from a veteran speedrunner too.
On to the demos:

Justin's usual amount:

Others demos:

Damn this update took forever. But I'm sure I'll be faster with time :)
And remember to keep those profiles coming. Homework is no excuse, neither is laziness!

Player Profiles! - 7:48 AM

Finally - Player Profiles at SDA.....full biography for every speeder who has a record at sda, and there will even be some of the veteran runners like Yonatan & Perkele (I hope). But to start with we have a full load of 7 profiles to show you guys. It's just typical questions in general like: favorite demo, favorite trick, your age, name, residence, quake settings, your hardware, music taste etc...but there's also questions like what score you got in the Quake Purity Test (I didn't do too good in that one) and most annoying monster....they even include pictures too :) Check it out and feel inspired.

So come on everyone, submit your profile, don't be shy, we won't laugh at your looks :)

Quickie - 9:53 AM

Just letting you know that I changed the HTR pak a little bit and reuploaded it. It fixes the movie not playing (doh), the exit leading nowhere, and I added some intermission points. You dont really need to get it, but if you plan to make demos on the level, then you should.

There are other demos, but I'm just posting the easy run of HTR that Daniel Hansson did in 0:46.

Hit the Roof! - 3:00 AM

If you used to visit Mineral's page, then you know he had lots of contests with weird twists. One of the maps involved a ... 180 degree twist. The contest was just to do an easy run through the map. Well I recently I decided to fix up the map, getting rid of all the bugs it had, and now I'm adding it to sda!

The name of the mape is "Hit the Roof" and it is e1m1 turned upside down. Unfortunatly, because of the extensive changes to the maps, the previous runs at Mineral's contest can't be used, and they'll have to be redone. One thing that delayed the map release a bit was that I wanted to make sure I had done the nightmare 100% of the map before posting it. I finally got it yesterday, in a time of 2:03. So download this upside down map right here and try to do the runs!

Run of the Week #8 Update - 3:50 AM

Quite a few runs have been submitted, all of them looking pretty good. Good route planning rather than good bunnying will win this ROTW, from what has been seen so far. Without going too much into the details of the runs I've seen so far, I can say that there are two main different strategies used in this ROTW, the grenade launcher route and the nailgun route. Both seems to be pretty even at the moment, and the competition has so far been pretty close and hot. So keep working on the runs!

Just a few clarification of the rules. Yes, kills which occurs during the intermission do count. You start from scratch (of course... that was a really dumb question, you know who you are). Demo naming convention, Please use this convention: rotw#-name.dem e.g. rotw8-tangent.dem

Here's a brief plan on how the Run of The Week will be conducted. New ROTW contests will be announced by Friday of Week 1. Over the weekend, a few runs will be submitted and I will post some general commentaries (no details about results and routes) sometime during Week 2. The deadline for demo submission will be the Monday noon Pacific Time of Week 3. This allows for two weekends of speed-running. Results will be posted as soon as possible after that and the new contest will appear by Friday night.

57 varieties - 1:42 AM

Hey everyone, I know demo updates have been sparse and I apologize for that, but it is evident that my ftp's "not posted yet" section has been usefull since some of the demos in this update have already been improved :)

Here's all the demos on easy skill:

That's all the single player easy demos, now for the nightmare ones: And that's all the sp nightmare demos.... mostly optic :)

And here's all the coops, with few exceptions all were done by the 5 people who have been doing the most coop lately. As usual, the single player times are in parenthesis for comparison.

Return of Run of the Week! - 6:56 PM

Surprised to hear from me? Thought I was dead? Well, I'm back! And with a new job scope as well, taking care of the Run of the Week! Joy and happiness for everyone!

There are a couple of changes I'm implementing to ROTW though, first of all, it will now be fortnightly, not weekly (but the name will not change). Secondly, all run submissions should go to me at tanget@pq (obviously). Thirdly, QdQStats MUST be used on all runs submitted.

Alright, let's get on to the new ROTW. Here are the rules:

  1. Map to be used is E2M1
  2. Skill 3 (Nightmare)
  3. You must exit the map in 0:45.99999 (i.e. the time elapsed at the intermission should show :45 or less)
  4. Winner of the ROTW is the player who achieves the most kills at the end of the map.
  5. If there is a tie, the player exiting earlier will be declared the winner
  6. Deadline is Monday 20th November
  7. Good luck!
  8. Members of the Qd100Qlite2 team are banned from ROTW until Qd100Qlite2 is completed
  9. Just kidding about rule #8

Get Naked! - 6:30 AM

The Quake done Naked page has been updated with the first naked coop :) More people need to start submitting naked demos! I know it's awkward to be naked in Quake at first but once you give it a good try it's actually quite fun.

Wednesday, October 25th (2nd update) by Nolan

ah, the bugs - 10:25 AM

It turns out there were some stupid bugs in the new dzip... like when you go to extract a .pak file it will either crash or also extract all of the files within the pak file. Plus the progress bar in extract was messed up. So get v2.21 from here.

200,000 hits update! - 8:30 AM

Well, we are almost at 200,000 hits! And it feels like we have that many demos for you today.

Single player demos

Justin Fleck did the usual amount, as always picking on Marlo:

Daniel Hansson did some badland2 demos, he needs to stay off the crackpipe though (refer to his .txt's): Marlo Galinski did a couple of demos, focused on Optic of course. Peter Stubgaard did a Nightmare 100% of black2 in 2:03, 4 seconds faster than his previous time.

Kip Werking owned Optic beyond comprehension with his Easy run of gordian in 1:27, 3 seconds faster, good job Kip!

Daniel Magnusson did a Nightmare 100% of e1m1 in 1:11, 1 second faster than his previous time.

I did an Easy 100% of Epoch in 1:45, 8 seconds faster than Thomas's time.

Thomas Bergendorff did a Nightmare 100% of e1m4 in 2:42, 1 second faster than Peter's time.

Cooperative Demos

What's more confusing than Stefan explaining Linux and more attractive than Gerald in a thong? Mad coops, and they're back!

Justin Fleck and I did a couple of runs: Nolan Pflug and Justin Fleck did a couple of coops to: Cameron Engles and I did an Easy 100% of E4M8 in 2:39, the zombies were tough to get.

Nolan Pflug and I had to do a Nightmare 100% of E1M6 in 0:43, despite the lag, we did good.

Peter Horvath and Attila Csywhatever did a nice Easy 100% of E2M4 in 0:59, 16 seconds faster than Marlo and Fabian's time.

Max Rebo and lodis did an Easy run of d1m7 in 0:31, 3 seconds faster than Robert and Alexander's time.

New dzip version - 11:00 AM

Hey everyone, I finally finished v2.2 of dzip. The following are the major new features/fixes: You can download it from the dzip link above or just use this to go straight to the download. The *nix versions will be posted later tonight once Stefan makes them.

I know the demo updates are sparse but that's why I sent up that ftp remember? It doesn't seem to be getting that much use... it has like 75% uptime despite what the demo.pl script leads you to believe.

Optic Has No Life - 7:38 AM

Optic had some free time from his usual schedule of spanking to pr0n to submit an absurd amount of demos. Peter Stubgaard has done a few demos in the last couple days to.

Thomas Stubgaard did a Nightmare 100% of E2M4 in 2:31, 9 seconds faster than his previous time.

Thomas Bergendorff did a Nightmare 100% of alpha001 in 1:05, three seconds faster than Optic.

I improved Justin's time of H2M4 by 2 seconds to get 0:39.

Justin and Nolan pimped up an Easy 100% of R1M2 to get a solid time of 1:48.

Also, there are some cool new demos for you to watch at the Quake done Naked page.

Quake.. Naked?!? - 4:45 PM

That's right the "surprise" I had waiting for you was a new site, Quake Done Naked! The site is basically like SDA except for the demos you send in are done without the use of any weapons, many thanks to Nolan's patch. The whole goal is to kill all, or as many enemies as possible, in under 10:00 without the use of any weapons. I won't waste any time explaining it here, just visit the page and find out for yourself! Also, many thanks to Kip who came up with this whole idea.

Thursday, October 5th (3rd update) by Evan

Coop Demos - 10:15 AM

Justin Fleck and I did a couple cooperative demos: Nolan and Justin also did a few Hipnotic cooperative demos: Daniel Hansson and Daniel Andersson (both daniels and two s's in the last name) did an Easy 100% of BadLand2 in 2:48.

And finally, Nolan and I did an Easy 100% of E4M6 in 1:43.

Check back on friday for a new speed running announcement!

Thursday, October 5th (2nd update) by Nolan

Fixed...... - 6:15 AM

Ok, I fixed everything up and updated all the zips again. So if you already downloaded the new v1.7 of the mods, you should get them again.

Thursday, October 5th by Nolan

On second thought - 4:00 AM

Well I just encountered a crash in the new SoAstats v1.7 that could affect them all. So I removed them for now, until I fix them in a bit... sorry :P

Wednesday, October 4th by Nolan

v1.7 of stats mods released - 7:30 AM

I have released new versions of all eight varations of QdQstats. The three main new things are that it fixes the old "statue bug", when a monster would very rarely just be a statue that you couldn't kill. It counts monster kills in coop as frags, so you can see who gets more kills, and it fixes problems with coop/impulse 9 and keys/weapons that trigger stuff (ex: if you do impulse 9, you can still run through e1m6 normally). Probably most people only need plain old QdQstats. You can also get the SoA, DoE, BB, zer and RDE versions from the QdQstats page. The other two are alk07, where I updated alk07progs.zip, and jzblue where I just replaced the progs in the map zip.

So, updating isn't really required ... but hey, I recommend it anway! :)

Monday, October 2nd (2nd update) by Evan

More Demos - 5:15 AM

Here are the rest of the Prodigy Special Edition coop demos Nolan and I did.

I also did an Easy run of Mexx9a in 1:21, improving Kimmo's record by 3 seconds.

42 - 12:12 AM

I've got a huge amount of demos for you. And I'm just going to put them in a big list, with some sorting done... I promise new levels will be added this week, unless something terrible happens :)

No update yet... - 5:35 PM

Just writing to say that I can't do a full demo update until sometime Sunday, but you can find all unposted demos on my ftp, using this link, which should work in all browsers.

Suck Me Sideways! - 11:39 AM

My first single player run in a year or so is an Easy run of p_se_4 in 0:37., improving Marlo's run by 10 seconds.

Now I will go to sleep and leave the rest of the demo work-load to Nolan :)

Wednesday, September 27th by Nolan

filewhat? - 7:50 AM

Hey, just a notice that we won't have problems with fileplanet malfunctining anymore, since we put up a new script to generate the links ourselves, and included is a link to the ftp on my computer. Here is an example.

Also, the demostats page now lists the number of free spaces left for 2-player coop demos in the id and hipnotic maps, since cooping is so popular lately. So, as I said, that whole 0 thing didn't last long :) I will also be adding more level as soon as I can.

One more change is that now every player has a player stats page. You can get to them from one of the player comparison pages and clicking on the names.

Friday, September 22nd by Nolan

The tables are FULL! - 7:45 AM

It's really true!

Hey, you know that page that shows how many free spaces are still in the tables? Well the total number had been decreasing for quite a while... and it now reads a big phat 0. Check it out... oh but it won't last :P

Here's the demos I did to finish it up:

Oh no, it's the end of "tablefilling"! Ah, just for now....

Lots more single player demos:

And more coop-y-ness on e3m5:

'Tis a day to remember.... a few years ago there were hundreds of holes in the tables and some doubted they would ever be filled. Now they finally are. I just want to say.... IT'S ABOUT TIME! hehe.

I didn't make links to the maps on this update because I already spent too much time on it... you know where to find them. Oh and I know I forgot at least one demo... it will be on the next (non-rushed) update.

The Project That Never Was... - 8:31 AM

About two years ago Ilkka and I embarked on a rather interesting project involving the axe. Our goal was to run through all of Quake on Easy, killing everyone with nothing more than an axe. Unfortunately, school started right during the middle of the project, however, I am trying to finish off some of the several levels left to complete.

Download the first demo from the project (refilm included) to get the idea of this very strange project. If anyone with a good amount filming experience would like to contribute to the filming portion then please email me! I will decide on if there will be a filmed version only if I can get enough help on filming! I'm stuck on ideas of how to complete E2M4 (buttons on the end) so I can't give a definate release date but expect the final release to be sometime before Christmas :)

Monday, September 18th (2nd update) by Evan

Yet Another.. - 8:45 AM

To add to the already overwhelming slew of cooperative demos Nolan and I decided to do an Easy 100% of Beyond Belief level 2. After some lag outs we got a solid time of 1:09.

Judging by my location FilePlanet is still down! All is not lost though, Nolan's FTP contains this & other new demos.

Monday, September 18th by Nolan

More goodness - 5:42 AM

Yeah the title is lame I know. Note: fileplanet is unresponsive as I post this, so the demo links could all be broken for all I know... I have ideas to avoid this in the future... For now, you'll have to use my ftp to get the new demos. (This goes straight to the "after june 4th" section and this link will work even in IE...)
Here's all the single player demos: And now for the newest slew of coop demos:

American's Strike Back! - 2:45 AM

American's are back in the house, so go run your pasty white asses back to your 'pubs' and sip on some 'lagar' or whatever you guys call beer.

Justin and I did a couple of 100% Nightmare demos.

Nolan and Flecker also did some Nightmare 100%'s.

I have nothing against pub's or pasty skin so don't be offended.

Friday, September 15th by Nolan

QdQwav - 7:09 PM

Just in case you've been living under the proverbial rock, you should get QdQwav the newest QdQ nightmare run through Quake. Some of the demos that I revelead the times of but not the demos, back on July 4th, were part of this so they are now available from the tables. Specifically on e1m3, e2m2, e3m1, e4m2, and e4m3.

Wednesday, September 13th (2nd update) by Nolan

Lots of custom demos - 6:59 AM

Here's the long promised demo update...

Daniel Magnusson decided to take over the map mntbase2, as well as doing a few other demos.

I did tons of table fillers and other improvements: More coops from me and other people:

Wednesday, September 13th by Jesse

RDE Marathon - 1:07 AM

Yea, someone has *finally* improved my nightmare 100% marathon of all of RDE. Stefan did the thing in 18:34 which is an embarassing amount of seconds faster than my demo (more than 700 seconds, urgh).

I really should be updating the RDE tables, I know, but I can't at the moment. Updating the SpeedCon page is neccessary too (I still got some pics that were never posted) - I'll make sure that gets done 'soon'.

Tuesday, September 12th by Nolan

Another QdQ release! - 6:35 AM

Now that you've fainted from seeing the headline, you should know it's not actually out yet. It will be out on Wednesday... and we've planned an IRC party. Check the QdQ page for details.

I should be posting demos tomorrow, but dont forget you can get them from my ftp...

Sunday, September 10th by Evan

New Coop - 5:16 PM

Justin and I did a Nightmare 100% coop of E3M2 in 1:09. Download it, its uhh fantabulous..

Sunday, September 3rd by Nolan

I'm drawing a blank - 4:23 AM

Just a reminder that you can find new demos before they're posted to the news by using my ftp, but I've noticed that it doesn't work in IE... what can I say except "IE sucks!" :) The ftp should usually be up all the time, except from approx. 7:00-16:00 CET when I'll be asleep. But it never hurts to try it.

On another note, the problem that Netscape had with .dz files on certain servers wasn't it's fault, and it wasn't my fault... it was the webservers fault. It has been fixed for the gamespy servers, so you shouldn't have that problem anymore.

And now for your regularly scheduled demos.

New SDA mirror - 5:20 PM

I have set up an ftp server with all of sda's demos on it, on my own computer. Jesse was able to download from it at 70k/s yesterday, but it's hard to say what results other people will have. ftp to 130.49.85.185, username/pass both 'sda'. Or just use this link. The demos are divded into "before june 4th" and "after june 4th" because of the way I have them stored. There's also some of the maps (plan to get all of them there later), as well as demos that I haven't put on the news yet.... It won't be up *all* the time since I do like to turn my computer off when I sleep, but it should be up a lot of the time.

Monday, August 28th by Nolan

Why stop at one? - 5:25 AM

A bit after posting the .dz version of Marlo's big marathon, I figured why stop at one, and since I had time to kill, I took Every single player marathon, made .dz files out of them and then uploaded the resulting 62mb of files :) (the zips were well over 100mb) Perhaps I'll do the multi player marathons too, and the hugest of the single level demos as well but classes start tomorrow so I dont know if I'll be able to or not. So if you haven't got dzip yet... well you'd better :P

demos... - 2:38 AM (updated 5:00 am)

Here's some demos for you... it didn't take me nearly as long as normal to upload them because I'm now on a faster connection :) Whoops, I forgot that Martin Selinus improved his nightmare run of phallusy by two seconds to get 0:34.

New dzip released! - 4:53 AM

After a few unwanted delays, Stefan and I have finally finished dzip v2.1. It has the usual new stuff: fixes to some rare encoding problems, and loads of new stuff for the gui. If you're like most people, the gui is probably all you want, so you can get just that here. If you need a command prompt version for Windows, Linux or Solaris, or if you want the source code for the whole thing, you can get those here.

For some more pics of dzip, go here.

Just as another example of dzip's power, I uploaded Marlo's famous nightmare 100% through all of Quake in 86:48 as a .dz file. The .zip file of the marathon is 7.52 MB, but the .dz file is only 4.13 MB, and this is lower than dzip's average performace. So if you never got that marathon because of it's size... well you must not have got the Nehahra movie either... but now you can at least get marlo's marathon :P

Oh btw, you can use dzip for any kind of file, not just .dem files; it's compression is very close to a normal .zip, sometimes even slightly better. If you find something that doesn't seem right, or is just a plain obvious bug, please report it to me.

wow - 4:23 AM

In this update I'm just posting one demo, even though more than it have been sent in... because this demo deserves it's own update! If you think there's any kind of mistake in this demo you must be on something because there's not! You must check this demo out... and then ask Martin how the hell he got so damn good :P

dzip - 4:12 AM

Well since we seem to be in a image posting mood here at SDA :) ... I'm posting my little teaser pic to show how I've been spending too much of my time lately:

Get off my n00tsack - 4:44 PM

Nehahra owns you.

Don't bug me - 9:44 PM

Here's the demo update that I put off simply because of a certain individual bugging me to do an update...

Four demos from the map Harmsway:

Valeriy Burmistrov did a few demos: Aleksander Osipov recovered some demos he did a while ago: R&R Axelsson improved both of Matthias and Stefan's coops on dxm, getting 0:06 on easy and 0:07 on nightmare.

Quick update - 9:08 PM

I don't feel like spending too much time on this update so I'm just going to do a quick list of all the new demos:

mkt.pl - 10:35 AM

The mkt.pl script for displaying demos should now be working again. We'll try and make sure it stays that way! :)

Nehahra - 5:47 AM

If you haven't heard of Nehahra, then I'm going to tell you that it is a Quake movie... What? It is a real movie with a plot, but it is done within Quake.... If you've ever seen the QdQ refilms, then this is taking that 20 time higher. The basic plot of Nehahra is Quake. It tells the story of Quake. I'm sure if you ever bothered to ready the story that id provided in the Quake manual, you probably thought it was pretty lame :) Well this movie fills in all the holes and makes it real. Quake actually makes sense! I didn't think I would but I watched the whole thing through in one sitting. Why's that so unbelievable? Well the running time is about 3 hours and 10 minutes. Quite an epic.... So if you can stand the 91 mb download and the 3d video card/450 mb disk space requirement, I suggest you check it out.

Oh btw, gamespy broke SDA's mkt.pl script about two days ago and haven't fixed it yet....

Mostly coop demos - 7:33 PM

This past weekend, one of the longest running runners (he started shortly after me), Matthias Belz, visited Stefan Schwoon and the two of thre recorded a variety of different coop demos: The Burmistrov brothers did two coop demos to:
  • Easy 100% of beach1 in 0:21, four seconds faster than Johan and Carl.
  • Nightmare 100% of beach1 in 0:20, three seconds faster than Johan and Carl.
Valeriy also did the easy 100% by himself in 0:28, three seconds faster than Daniel.

If you've never seen the beach1 map... well it's pretty damn ugly. But because of it's size and layout it's actually pretty good for speed running.

Other single player demos:

  • Thomas Stubgaard totally destroyed my easy 100% of e3m3 with all the kills. He got a time of 10:44. My time was 25:07, so that's like more than 14 minutes faster!
  • Janne improved Esa's easy run of harmsway-the long way, by 10 seconds to get 1:58.
  • Esa improved Matthias's nightmare 100% of a2d2 by 46 seconds to get 4:25.
  • Thomas Bergendorff improved Optic's easy 100% of The Epoch Turning by eight seconds to get 1:53. He described this demo as "...includes 2 grenadepushes off zombies, a grenadejump over a 'hole', a grenadepush off an ogre, a grenadejump off an enforcer and a grenadejump to gain some speed."
  • Thomas B also improved his own nightmare run of epoch by 10 seconds to get 1:28.
  • And he improved Optic's nightmare 100% of tspe by three seconds to get 1:22, by using a new route.
Mr Shambler passed along word that he is a pioneer in the speedrunning field again by doing the first ever Daikatana speedruns. There is also a demos section on PlanetDaikatana where you can submit your own demos.

New load of demos - 4:43 AM

Here's the usual huge update full of demos... some demos are dzipped and some are plain old zipped because I already had them uploaded before the new dzip was released.

id-level demos:

  • Attila improved Qurre's easy run of e4m5-the long way, by one second to get 0:58.
  • Thomas improved my nightmare 100% of e3m7 (the axe map) by 34 seconds to get 2:17. Well I dont have any nightmare 100% left on id maps :)
  • Sergi improved Jordi's easy run marathon through the 2nd episode by four seconds to get 3:55. This marathon is really starting to get pushed to it's limits.
More hipnotic demos from me:
  • Easy 100% of hip2m1 in 2:18, nine seconds faster than my previous one.
  • Easy 100% of hip3m4 in 2:09, 32 seconds faster than Matthias.
  • Nightmare 100% of hipdm1 in 1:33, 51 seconds faster than my last one. I also posted a new version of SoAstats to fix some bugs I found while doing that.
Marlo sent me eight demos a while ago, telling me to wait until he had 10 to post them, but I only gave him until the end of the month to give me the rest and he only gave me one more so here's just nine demos from Marlo... I learned just before this update that the 31st is Marlo's 18th birthday, so happy birthday Marlo! Don't drink too much :P
  • Easy run of bnt (Bridges & Towers) in 0:47, one second faster than Daniel.
  • Easy run of damaul3 in 1:55, 12 seconds faster than his previous run. Marlo got word of a shortcut straight from the level author.
  • Easy 100% of azurette in 2:12, seven seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • Easy 100% of Badlands 1 in 1:57, eight seconds faster than Optic.
  • Easy 100% of bc2 (BC Dwellings) in 1:03, two seconds faster than Optic.
  • Easy 100% of bnt in 2:41, five seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • Easy 100% of Hell's Castle in 1:31, two seconds faster than Ken.
  • Easy 100% of ih1m2 (The Necrohell) in 1:54, new to the charts.
  • Easy 100% of Castle of Oblivion in 5:10, also new.
Matthias Belz did some more table filling:
  • Nightmare run of a2d2 in 0:59. (Easy run is 0:47 by Thomas B)
  • Nightmare 100% of a2d2 in 5:11.
  • Nightmare run of a3 - the Journey Home in 1:58. (Easy run is 1:26 by Mr Shambler)
  • Nightmare 100% of a3 in 3:53. (Easy 100% is 3:40 by me)
  • Nightmare 100% of The Black Crypt in 2:08. (Easy 100% is 1:51 by Optic)
And some other demos:
  • We have a new 'brother' in the speed running scene... Thomas's brother, Mads-Peter Stubgaard, improved my nightmare 100% of 4fiffy3 (RTD) by six seconds to get 2:47.
  • Stefan did an easy 100% of a2d2 in 1:57.
  • I did the nightmare 100% of assassin in 7:13, only six seconds slower than my easy 100%.

New version of dzip - 10:50 AM

Stefan and I have released v2.0 of dzip, the Quake demo compression program that compresses quake demos to about half the size as zip. The windows exe has a vastly improved GUI, a lot like WinZip. Go grab it from the dzip page at QdQ, if you can... you might have problems (see my rant below). Feel free to start sending your demos as dz files... after all they are half the size so it's preferred from now on. And just to show how good dzip is, I've got a few of these for you:

MARATHONS!!!

Hey I'm crazy!!! crazy I tell you! I have done all eight 100% marathons in the hipnotic mission pak! :) I know you can't trust my opinion on my own demos but you simply must check some of these out if you have the hipnotic pak (and if you dont, why the hell not) You haven't seen such quality in huge 100% marathons since Marlos 86:48 through id1... The total size of these is about 11MB... compressed with zip they total 31MB!

  • Easy 100% of hip1 in 9:43, 13 seconds faster than my previous one.
  • Easy 100% of hip2 in 14:22, 22 seconds faster than my previous one.
  • Easy 100% of hip3 in 8:52, 1:15 faster than Marlo.
  • Easy 100% of all of hip in 34:21, 6:07 faster than Marlo.
  • Nightmare 100% of hip1 in 11:20, 1:14 faster than my previous one.
  • Nightmare 100% of hip2 in 20:31, 3:14 faster than my previous one.
  • Nightmare 100% of hip3 in 15:36, 1:30 faster than my previous one.
  • Nightmare 100% of all of hip in 51:28, brand spankin new!
Enjoy.... if your time is limited I'd recommened the nightmare ones over the easy ones. After all the total running time is almost 3 hours.

A rant

In case you haven't noticed, the place to get all the demos from, fileplanet.com, isn't as good as it used to be. It used to have many mirrors, and now there's only one, and it never works, so you're left with just the gamespy download. And to top things off, a lot of times you dont even get that page that shows the mirrors! I've been trying for hours now and www.fileplanet.com refuses to display anything at all. I dont know what to say except that gamespy has been promising to fix it for months now and it's only gotten worse. I sent an email to planetquake a while ago but never got a hint of a response. If you're on ICQ and would like a file on SDA that you're having trouble getting, feel free to ask me.

Climbing all over Ken - 4:55 AM

The map of attention in this update is climb, an old, rather small map, where the only monster is an ogre... In the last update, Fab improved Ken's easy 100% on it. Ken decided to improve his nightmare 100% of it before Fab did and got 0:59, three seconds faster than this previous. But that didn't stop Fab, who got a 0:51, for a total of 11 seconds better :) Fab also further improved his easy 100% to a 0:50. And then, just for kicks, I connected to Fab's computer and we did a 2p easy 100% in 0:45.

Dont fall down.....

Tuesday, July 25th by Nolan

Another big bunch of demos - 1:08 PM

Fab did three demos:
  • He got 0:46 for the nightmare run of e2m1 - the long way, three seconds faster than his previous, and equalling Ilkka's time on easy.
  • He improved my nightmare run of e4m5 - the long way, by six seconds to get 1:06.
  • He improved Ken's easy 100% of climb by six seconds to get 0:55.
Matthias Belz did some table filling: Everyone elses demos:
  • Kare Slettnes improved his nightmare 100% of e1m3 by 10 seconds to get 1:52.
  • I improved my nightmare 100% of hip2m1 by 10 seconds to get 2:29.
  • Valeriy improved his nightmare 100% of doom2_07 yet again to get an amazing time of 0:17.
  • Valeriy also improved the easy 100% of the end map by one second to get 1:57.
  • Robert improved his coop nightmare 100% of e1m2 with Rickard (previously done with Alex) by five seconds to get 1:01.
  • A new player, Esa "Power" Lähteenmäki, has done two table fillers: easy run of Harm's way - the long way, in 2:08, and nightmare run of tohnsay in 2:03.
  • Optic improved his easy run of Empekoles Domain by six seconds to get 1:12.
<teaser>
It seems Markus has further improved his hidden nightmare run record of e1m3 by one second to get a 0:24.....

The usual Nolan update - 1:26 PM

Just a bunch of new demos:
  • Valeriy Burmistrov improved Chris's nightmare 100% of the end map by one second to get 1:58.993. I'd say he cut it close, how about you?
  • He also did the 100%s on coop with his brother (?) Vlad Burmistrov, getting 1:55 on easy, a one second improvement, and 1:55 on nightmare as well, new.
  • Valeriy and Vlad also improved the nightmare 100% of doom2_07 that Stefan and I made in Finland, by two seconds, to get 0:15.
  • And Valeriy improved his previous single player nightmare 100% of doom2_07 by another second (his fourth entry) to get 0:18.
  • Fab improved his nightmare run of e2m1 the long way by four seconds to get 0:49. Almost as fast as the easy record.
  • Ken improved Chris's easy 100% of Hell's Castle by two seconds to get 1:34, but wasn't satisfied with it and sent a 1:33 a few days later.
  • Optic improved his previous nightmare run of r1m2 by three seconds to get 1:44.
  • I improved my nightmare 100% of hip1m1 yet again, this time by nine seconds, to get 1:28. Be prepared for a few more MB of hip demos from me, as soon as I finish the next version of dzip :)
That's all for now, enjoy!

A Non-Nolan update! - 3:25 PM

Hi. This is just to say that I've been really busy recently, but there will be one last Run of the Week before (hopefully) Gerald takes over, if he can.

I'll make sure it's a good one, it'll probably be a slight variation on one of the more popular previous challenges, maybe one that had a word beginning with 'sk' in it's title. It'll probably appear some time next week, depending on my alcohol intake.

Many thanks to Nolan, BTW, on behalf of the rest of the SDA team for doing all this updating. Jesse and Ilkka are out of action, I'm very busy, and I don't know what has happened to Evan.

On that note, Jesse hasn't said so, I don't think, but he can't use his computer for some time, so Runner's Delight will be out of action for some time, I'm afraid.

More demos and one new level - 5:14 AM

Oodles of demos for this update... I was going to do it last night but put if off...
  • Attila sent in a 1:02 for the easy run of e4m5 the long way, six seconds faster than Ken, but a little bit later, we received a 0:59 from Qurre. He did some crazy bunnies and even got a fiend boost...
  • Fab filled the hole for the nightmare run of e2m1 the long way, getting a time of 0:53, just seven seconds slower than Ilkka's easy run.
  • Shine improved Martin's easy run marathon through the 2nd episode, getting a time of 3:59.
That's all the singe player id demos. There's some 3-player id demos down a bit. Now for some demos I did:
  • I improved Optic's nightmare run of hip2m3 by four seconds to get 0:48. Something weird happened at one point in this one...
  • I also improved Optic's nightmare run of hip2m4 by four seconds to get 0:43. ph3ar my l33t bunnies :P
  • I improved Will's nightmare 100% of hip3m4 by 48 (!) seconds to get 3:06.
  • I was in the table filling mood, and did the easy 100% of assassin in 7:09. Not the prettiest level, but it's ok.
  • and the easy 100% of The well of wishes in 2:18. Very nice level, if you've never seen it. I think you can use this level to define what "non-linear" means :)
A few demos from various people:
  • Jozsef improved the runs of mbb7 by one second, he got 0:09 on both easy, and nightmare.
  • Robert improved Stefan's easy run of oblivion by one second to get 0:12. Is this optimized already?
  • Valeriy improved his easy 100% of jzblue3 by one second to get 0:17.
  • Optic improved his nightmare run of r1m5 by 18 seconds to get 1:18.
Phallusy

The one level mentioned in the subject is the phallusy map, which was made for a contest at Mineral's page. I decided to add the map to the levels here at sda because it was designed for speedrunning....where else can you do a double-grenade-spawn jump?!? And because Jozsef sent in a 1:24 for the nightmare 100% on it, a 34 seconds improvment over Benny's winning entry for that type of demo in the contest. An easy 100% has not yet been done on this map...

[Mad] Coops!

Lots of coop demos for this update too. Robert, his brother Rickard, and his friend Alex are having a lan and have done many 3 player demos.

  • Valeriy and Andrey improved Mattias and Gunnar's nightmare 100% of doom2_01 by six seconds to get 0:29. The doom conversion maps seen pretty popular for coop...
  • Robert and gang did a nightmare run of e1m7 in 0:19, two seconds faster than the two player record (by just Robert and Rickard) and 10 seconds faster than the single player time.
  • They improved Ravage, Shine and Mari's easy run of e2m2 by two seconds to get 0:26, now five seconds faster than the [hidden] single player time.
  • They improved Filip, Jesper and Albin's easy run of e2m3 by five seconds to get 0:25, now nine seconds faster than the singe player. You need to see the boost they do :)
  • They improved Mattias, Magnus and Gunnar's easy 100% of e2m4 by 13 seconds to get 0:56. This is 19 seconds faster than the 2 player time and 44 seconds faster than the one player.
  • They improved the previous easy 100% of e4m3, by me, Gunnar and Evan, by 28 seconds to get 0:59, now 31 seconds faster than the single player time.
  • They did a nightmare 100% of jzblue3 in 0:18, nine seconds faster than the single player. The poor shambers never stood a chance...
  • They did a nightmare run of oblivion in 0:08. Robert and Rickard also did with just two players in 0:11, and on easy in 0:08.

Thursday, July 13th by Nolan

An ordinary update? - 8:50 AM

Hey, just demos in this one:
  • Marlo sent in a 0:34 for the nightmare run of e1m6, the long way, two seconds better than Ken, but about 15 hours later, we got a 0:32 from Qurre.
  • Ken did e4m5, the long way, on easy in 1:08, only four seconds faster than my lousy nightmare demo....
  • Stefan improved Mr Shambler's easy run of oblivion by two seconds to get 0:13.
  • Robert did the run of oblivion on nightmare and got 0:21.
  • I did the nightmare run of hip1m4 in 1:08, 17 seconds faster than Optic.
  • Optic sent in several demos just in the past few hours, first improving Mr Shambler's easy run of ih1m4 by six seconds to get 0:29.
  • Then he did it on nightmare in 0:46.
  • Then he improved some demos on the oldest demos list, first getting 1:01 for the nightmare run of escape, two seconds faster than Matthias.
  • He then improved Matthias's nightmare run of The Lost World by four seconds to get 0:54.
  • And finally he improved his own easy run of r1m5 by four seconds to get 1:04.
  • Ravage and Shine did a marathon coop easy run through id episode 4 in a time of 3:14, 10 seconds faster than Markus's single player record.

Variations of the classics - 9:05 AM

There hasn't been very many demos on the id maps lately... there's a few here though. Plus there's a new way to do a few of them. In the last update I revealed how Hanuu Kankaanpää showed that it is possible to kill the zombies on e3m3 when you start from scratch. So I opened up the first variant way to run a level... you can now do an e3m3 100% either with or without all the kills. Well now I'm going to do a few more :) Back at the end of 98, we had two run of the week contests to run e2m1 and e1m6 without using their well known shortcuts. Ilkka won both of them, but probably none of the newer people have seen or heard of these demos. Well they are now listed in the tables:
  • Easy run of e1m6 "the long way" in 0:26.
  • Easy run of e2m1 the long way in 0:46.
Feel free to improve those if you can, and do them on nightmare skill. You can also do a long version of e4m5 too, and I threw together a crappy run of it on nightmare in 1:12.

These will be the only id maps with variations... the reason is that the runs on these three maps are very short, (but still require super running skills) and their shortcuts always used. (BTW the demostats page page now lists 4 holes in the id maps, which has been 0 for a very very long time) But there will also be a few custom maps with the normal and long variety. For now you can do the following custom maps the long way:

Again, for these maps, the current runs are not going anywhere, there is just added variety. On the other hand, for the maps that I recently threw out the runs on them, those runs are coming back and will be listed as "the cheap way" :)

And now for a few other id demos:

  • Alexander Osipov got the record for the nightmare 100% of e1m2 back from Robert; he improved it by two seconds to get 1:10.
  • Alex also improved his own easy 100% of e4m7 by four seconds to get 2:09.
  • Martin Selinus improved Optic's easy 100% of e4m5 by nine seconds to get 1:36.
  • Martin also improved Ravage's marathon easy run of id ep2 by two seconds to get 4:01.
  • In the last update I forgot two of the unpublished QdQ demos:
Ilkka improved his easy 100% of e4m1 by three seconds to get 0:57
Marlo and Fabian did a nightmare run coop on e3m1 in 0:26 (actually slower than the new hidden single player record....)
<rumor>Thomas may have improved my nightmare 100% of e2m6...</rumor>

Dont underestimate the custom levels though!

I want to give a message about custom levels... I know a lot of people ignore them because they dont want to download the maps, and think the demos aren't very good. I was one of those people myself until four months ago when I finally got all the maps. Recently I've been watching many of the custom map demos and I must say that if you dont watch the custom map demos, you're missing out... I remember one map that had two explo box jumps for the run! And all kinds of other things that I cant remember :) I put a link at the top of the page to a list of recently added levels, so you can keep track of them. And now for some demos:

  • Thomas Bergendorff did the easy run of a2d2 in 0:47 with some grenade jumps.
  • He also did the easy 100% of well in 3:56, 23 seconds faster than Marlo.
  • I did the easy 100% of polygon2 in 2:18, filling the hole.
  • Optic ran through tohnsay on easy in 1:41.
  • Valeriy Burmistrov improved the nightmare 100% of jzblue2 by six seconds to get 0:25.
  • He also got help from Vlad to improve the coop easy 100% of jzblue3 by two seconds to get 0:13.

A whole lot of stuff - 6:52 AM

dzip GUI

First thing of note is that I released the first version of a GUI for dzip, I call it version 0.7 because it doesn't have full functionality yet. So go get it from the dzip page. I'm going to start directly linking to .dz files on larger demos here on the news, so it will be a good thing to have. Note though that those demos that are .dz will still have a .zip link to them on the mkt.pl pages because I forgot to ask Stefan to do that. :P (fixed now)

New Levels

A few people have been bugging me to add new levels, so I decided to add the levels that Mr shambler recently reviewed at his site. The first is alk07 - Egyptian Myth. I did two demos on it... the easy run in 1:17 (pretty fast for the route, but there is a better route...) and the nightmare 100% in 7:04. Download the map, and a progs patch, on the alk07 page. The second is a2d2 - Ambush keen pilgrims. Download the map here. I didn't do any demos here so it's a clean slate.

New Levels (??)

Hey didn't I just have that headline? Hmm, well this isn't really "new" levels... it's more like a new take on old levels. Everyone knows that it's not possible to kill the zombies on e3m3 right? Well everyone is wrong... that's right you can kill them. Rather than throw out the awsome demos that do not have the kills to replace them with boring demos that do get them, Stefan has come up with a way to have more than one kind of 100% for the same level. I managed to do the easy 100% with all the kills in an amazing 25:07! Feel free to improve :)

I've also taken the 100% demos on damaul3b that just had 1/2 secrets and made them the variety, and took the one demo that has both secrets into the "normal" spot. For now this is all the variations, but more will be coming soon.

And now for a few demos:

  • Optic improved his easy run of badland1 by two seconds to get 1:04.
  • He also improved his easy 100% of r1m1 by four seconds to get 2:24.
  • Robert improved his nightmare run of coagula by four seconds to get 0:13, using a new kind of trick...
  • Valeriy improved Marlo's easy 100% of jzblue_3 by one second to get 0:18.
  • Shine improved Marlo's marathon easy run of ep3 by four seconds to get 3:03.

Unreleased demos

There are actually several demos on id maps that have not been posted here to SDA. They are part of QdQ projects that have not been released yet. But with the several incidents recently of people trying to improve the demos where there is an unpublished improvement, I talked to the people who have made the improvements and asked when they think should be done. After some debate, they agreed that I should post the times of their demos here to SDA, but still keep the demos unavailable. This way nobody tries to improve them anymore, and you are kept in suspense :) So here they are, in order of map:

  • On e1m1, Markus got 0:23 for the easy run, one second faster than Ilkka.
  • Attila and Peter did the easy run coop in a ridiculous 0:21, one second faster than their previous.
  • On e1m2, Markus got 0:30 for the easy run, two seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • Ravage and Shine also got 0:30 for the coop run.
  • On e1m3, Markus got 0:32 for the easy run, five seconds faster than Evan.
  • Ravage and Shine got 0:25 for the coop run, two seconds faster than Chris and Patrick.
  • Markus also did the nightmare run in 0:25, three seconds faster than Yonatan.
  • On e2m1, Peter got 1:09 for the easy 100%, nine seconds faster than his record.
  • Attila and Peter got a 0:06 for the easy coop! :)
  • On e2m2, Peter got 0:31 for the easy run, five seconds better than his current demo.
  • Ravage and Shine also got 0:31 for the coop run.
  • Peter got 0:38 for the nightmare run, seven seconds faster than Will.
  • On e3m1, Markus got 0:24 for the easy run, one second faster than his current record.
  • Attila and Peter had got 0:24 for the coop easy run long before Markus got his 0:24.
  • Martin got 1:13 for the easy 100%, two seconds faster than Marlo.
  • Markus did the nightmare run in 0:25, two seconds better than his current demo.
  • On e4m1, Attila and Peter got 0:16 for the easy coop run, two seconds faster than the single player time.
  • Ilkka and Juho got 0:17 for the coop on nightmare.
  • On e4m2, Markus got 0:30 for the easy run, one second faster than Martin.
  • Atilla and Peter had managed a 0:30 for the coop run before Markus got the 0:30 on single player.
  • Markus got 0:31 for the nightmare run, three seconds faster than his record.
  • On e4m3, Markus got 0:39 for the easy run, one second faster than his last demo.
  • Markus did the nightmare run in 0:40, two seconds faster than him again.
These demos will be listed in the tables and have no link to them, until their respective QdQ project is released. One of them is getting "pretty close" to completion so you might see those demos within two months...

PS, I spent 3 hours on this update so something is probably screwd up somewhere... please let me know, if so :)

Farewell - 9:00 PM

Since I will go to the army tomorrow, I will be pretty much away from the speedrunning scene for a year or so. I'll have a chance to check my e-mail about once a week.

One more demo before I leave:

  • H1M1 easy 100% in 1:12 - Claimed my record back from Nolan, 3 seconds faster.
That's it. See you all laters...

Tiny update - 7:59 AM (updated 8:25)

I've got a whole three demos for you..... what the heck is everyone's excuse for not making demos huh?
  • Ilkka really did improve Optic's easy 100% of hip2m3, getting 1:42, 19 seconds faster than Optic.
  • Thomas Stubgaard improved my easy 100% of the ax-map, e3m7, by 12 seconds to get 1:35. (He says to expect the nightmare 100% soon).
  • Robert Axelsson improved Ilkka's nightmare run of coagula by one second to get 0:17.
RotW

I just thougth I'd let everyone know what's going on with Run of the Week. Will says he is currently too busy to update the results of the last contest, but he will try to get them up as soon as possible. In two weeks or so, Gerald Tan (remember him?) might be taking over for Will. But in the meantine I'm going to initate a "Run of the interim period" or something. The idea came from Thomas.... can anybody do the nightmare 100% of e2m6? I did it almost three years ago in a time of 12:46. I dont remember how many kills I got, but it wasn't all of them either. (it's probably not possible to get *all* of the zombies, but I tried to get as many as possible). Now I know it's hard, boring, long, etc, but I'm sure there is somebody who reads this page who can beat my 12:46 and get at least the same number of kills. So I issue that as a challange until there is an official ROTW again.

dzip

If you haven't heard, Stefan released a Quake dem compression program that is about twice as good as a normal zip program. I've used it already on my most recent marathons. The current version is 1.1 and you can get it here but there's a 1.2 coming tomorrow (probably) that fixes a few bugs. Currently it's just a command line tool, but that will change as I'm working on a Winzip-ish GUI for it.

Update:
I kept forgetting to mention that Mr Shambler of TeamShambler Quake level reviews sent word of the first speed run ever for the game Wheel of Time, over at his other site, FPS demos and discussions. So if you have WoT, check it out.

Hipnotic crazyness - 5:57 AM

More than half of the demos for this update are on the hipnotic pak. Many are by me, but some are by Ilkka and Optic too.

Ilkka did four demos:

  • Nightmare run of hip1m2 in 0:12, one seconds faster and equalling the easy time.
  • Easy run of hip1m3 in 0:48, 15 seconds faster, using a whole new route!
  • Nightmare run of hip1m3 in 0:50, 26 seconds faster using the same new route, of course.
  • Nightmare run of coagula in 0:18, six seconds faster, and also faster than the easy run. What's the trick here? well it involves an Ogre...
For the last update I did five nightmare 100%s of hipnotic stuff... for this one I did the easy 100%s of the same maps :)
  • Easy 100% of hip2m1 in 2:27, 23 seconds faster than me.
  • Easy 100% of hip2m2 in 2:57, 19 seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • Easy 100% of hip2m6 in 2:40, 41 seconds faster than Matthias.
  • Easy 100% of the 1st hip episode in 9:56, 1:13 faster than Marlo.
  • Easy 100% of the 2nd hip episode in 14:44, 1:35 faster than Marlo.
  • I also improved my nightmare 100% of hip1m1 by six seconds to get 1:37.
  • And I got 1:15 for the easy 100% of hip1m1, five seconds faster than Ilkka. (had to work for that time)
Optic did a few demos too...
  • He sent in a 2:04 for the easy 100% of hip2m3 but the next day sent in a 2:01, for a total of nine seconds faster than Ilkka. (Ilkka says he has faster already though but I dont see any demo Ilkka :))
  • Nightmare run of mexx3 in 1:17, three seconds faster than his old demo.
Two demos from Thomas Bergendroff:
  • Easy run of well (the map I threw out the 3s on) in 1:58, grenade jumps included.
  • Easy 100% of placebo in 2:46, filling the hole.
And two demos from Robert Axelsson:
  • Nightmare 100% of jzblue_3 in 0:27, 11 seconds faster than Marlo.
  • Easy 100% of jzblue_3, with Rickard, in 0:15, four seconds faster than the single player.
And finally, Marlo improved Shine's easy run through ep3 by three seconds to get a time of 3:07.

All the other demos - 5:30 AM

This update will finally catch SDA up to date, posting all demos that were sent to SDA during SpeedCon (check out the new page for that if you haven't already) and those afterwards while we took a few days to post the Speedcon demos...

I'll start with demos from Optic:

  • Easy run of r2m4 in 1:48, three seconds faster than me.
  • Easy run of mexx4 in 1:23, three seconds faster than Mr J.
  • Nightmare 100% of bbelief3 in 2:17, 35 seconds faster than Stefan.
  • Nightmare 100% of bbelief4 in 2:58, 49 seconds faster than Stefan.
That's all from him, now for some Hipnotic demos from me:
  • Nightmare 100% of hip2m1 in 2:39, 38 seconds faster than my old keyboard record.
  • Nightmare 100% of hip2m2 in 3:55, 23 seconds faster than my old keyboard record.
  • Nightmare 100% of hip2m6 in 3:13, 50 seconds faster than my old keyboard record.
  • Only 5 keyboard demos left!
  • I improved my marathon Nightmare 100% through the 1st hip episode by 1:49 to get 12:34.
  • Then I filled the hole for the Nightmare 100% through the 2nd hip episode getting a time of 23:45. Nice times, eh?
Demos from Robert Axelsson:
  • Easy run of coagula in 0:22, one second faster than his last demo.
  • Easy run of darkfst in 2:42, three seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • Nightmare run of darkfst in 2:43, nine seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • Nightmare run of bbelief3 in 0:56, three seconds faster than Optic.
  • Nightmare run of bbelief5 in 0:24, four seconds faster than Alex.
  • Easy run coop with Rickard on jzblue_1 in 0:10, two seconds faster than the single player time.
Valeriy Burmistrov did some crazy stuff on the doom2_07 conversion map:
  • He first sent in an two second improvement to the nightmare 100%, to get 0:20.
  • The next day he send in a coop NH in 0:19, since at the time the current coop was 0:22. But a few days later Stefan and I got 0:17, as seen on the Speedcon page... but we didn't know about the 0:19 when we made it :)
  • Valeriy also sent in a 0:10 for the coop EH that day.
  • Two days later he improved the easy 100% coop to get 0:09!
  • The next day he improved the nightmare 100% by another second to get 0:19! (I thought his 0:22 and 0:20 were already damn good)
  • Finally, on the next day, he improved the easy 100% to get 0:10.
  • So, should all four single player records plus the two coop records be put on the unbeatable list? It seems like it....
Martin Selinus improved the runs on the assassin map, to get 0:26 on both easy and nightmare.
Matthias Belz filled the 100% holes on the hunter map, getting 2:46 on easy and 3:09 on nightmare.
Thomas Stubgaard improved both 100%s on e3m3, getting 0:52 on easy, two seconds faster than Robert and 2:04 on nightmare, eight seconds faster than his last demo.
Ingmar improved Will's nightmare 100% of rd1m4 by eight seconds to get 1:43.
Ravage improved the nightmare run of e1m2 by two seconds to get 0:32.

Finally, I'm posting an improvement to the nightmare run of e1m1 that Ilkka did a long time ago, to get 0:26. This was originally a secret demo to be part of a QdQ project, but since Martin recently duplicated the demo I'm posting the original.

SpeedCon site goes live! - 12:26 AM

At last, the SpeedCon page is up. It took quite a while to sort everything out, loads of demos, pics, etc. to upload, and lots more is still to come, as so far only one of us has his pics available.

For those of you that don't know: SpeedCon was a meeting of speedrunners from all over the world last week, held in Finland, organized by SDA's own Ilkka Kurkela. Anyway, just check out the page, there's loads of super-high-quality madcoops (be sure to get that insane 6-player run of e1m4, for instance :).

Table changes - 9:28 PM

Hey just a note of a few changes we've made to the tables. First thing is that any coop 'records' that are slower than the single player will not count as records anymore. They will still be available from the player's page and the level's page but wil not count as records. For example, easy run on e3m2, the 2p is slower than the one player... This also goes into higher player demos, for example the 6p easy 100% on e1m1 is slower than the 3p, so it does not count as a record anymore. For cases where the time is the same, the demo with more players will still count as a record if it was done before the one with fewer players. Thanks to Stefan for doing all the code for this.

The famous oldest 25 records page has been moved from the Demo stats page to the Oldest demos page, which also includes a list of "Unbeatable records?" If there's a record you think should be there, then let us know...and if you think there's one there that shouldn't be....well try to improve it :) Also of note is that we threw out the runs on the maps tohnsay and well. The reason for this is the same as why we dont allow a 0:04 demo on zer1m6. To quote the news from Jan 6, 1999:

A small notice about the custom level zer1m6: this level can be completed by simply slopejumping from the pool at the start to the trigger_changelevel. This week we received yet another 0:04. We are NOT accepting this run. If you understand what speedrunning is about youll see the logic behind this. What's cooler, watching somebody do a 1-sec demo (cause about 80% of the 0:04 in zer1m6 is movie) with one simple jump, or to watch somebody sneak past I-don't-know-how-many-monsters in no time?
So that leaves four new holes in the tables that can be filled easily....

The last table changes is that the demostats page now includes graphs that show the number of demos done per month/year.

Ilkka is lazy :) - 5:07 AM

Hey everybody, I realize the page has been a bit sparse on demos latey, that's because while we were all having a good time in Finland we didn't have time to do any updates, and now there's so many demos to update it's taking a while to catch up :) I know I originally promised some people that the demos we did while at Speedcon would be up by this time, but Jesse does not have the page done yet... he's promising tomorrow now. So this update has several demos that Ilkka did back in May but was too lazy to post... He described a lot of them as "lame custom demos" but there's still some good skills.
  • Nightmare run of hip1m1 in 0:19, six seconds faster than his previous run!
  • Run on armorgod in 0:24 on both easy and nightmare, two seconds faster.
  • Easy run of colony in 0:29, two seconds faster than Optic.
  • Easy run of darkness in 0:44, four seconds faster than Optic.
  • Easy run of flo in 0:48, five seconds faster than Optic.
  • Run on jdungen in 0:28 on both easy (four seconds faster than Marlo) and nightmare (six seconds faster than Optic).
  • Easy run of village in 1:04, ten seconds faster than Optic.
  • Nightmare run of village in 1:10, 1:06 faster than Optic.
  • Ilkka filled up all the holes on the least popular map, darkfst:
Easy run in 2:45, 30 seconds faster than Optic's run, the only demo previous done here.
    Easy 100% in 3:38.
    Nightmare run in 2:52.
    Nightmare 100% in 3:42.
Expect all the coops from Speedcon very soon, and then after that there will be an update for all the demos that were sent in in the meantime. BTW if you send mail to sda and it bounces back to you, it is probably just because Will is having email problems.

Flying sucks - 10:57 PM

I finally got home from Finland a few minutes ago... all in all it took me 60 f*&*#$*@#($&king hours from the time I left Ilkka's to get back home.... not only was I stuck in Paris but my flight from new york was cancelled because of weather and they took 23 hours to get me one another one! Needless to say I'm just a bit worn out since I've been up for 38 hours as I write this with the exception of trying to sleep on a cold hard floor for 3 hours in JFK airport. Well I guess that's all for me until I recover....

Speedcon 2000 is over - and it was too phat to be true!! - 12:24 AM

About three hours ago I came back from Finland, and the post-SpeedCon chat just ended. Everybody's back home again, except for poor Nolan, whose delayed flight from Helsinki forced him to spend the coming night in Paris...expect some harsh words from him about connecting flights soon ;)

Anyway, just like all the others, I thought SpeedCon was just totally insane; I can't remember that much occasions where I had this much fun. We did loads and loads of coops, ranging from 2-player 100%'s to 6-player runs (!). Lots of DM demos were also recorded the last day, and an entirely new QdQ-production (which for the moment remains to be officially announced) was initiated, and *shock*horror* finished as well.

As you can see, massive amounts of interesting stuff to post. Because this was such a special occasion, we've decided to open a special page for all the demos, which will open at the end of this weekend. Expect some pictures of drunk speedrunners there as well :)

Once again mad thanks to Ilkka, without whom all of this wouldn't have been possible, and also to Stefan for bringing the idea up in the first place.

Speedcon 2000 ! - 8:15 AM

The speedrunner's meeting starts officially today, woah! Just like Nolan wrote in his previous update, we "saw him on the other side" :). In other words, speedcon is a meeting, in which 8 people are travelling to Finland to my place. They will stay here until next Tuesday-Wednesday, and we have six computers in a network here -> expect some high quality Mad coops! :) Nolan was the first one to arrive yesterday, and the others will travel today. We already managed to do two mad co-op's with Nolan and some other fins:
  • E2M1, easy 100% in 0:34 - 5-player mad coop by me, Nolan, J-J, Alex and Matti. This was very fun to do...
  • E3M7, easy 100% in 1:01 - 4-player mad coop by me, Nolan, J-J and Alex. Heh, did we have a hard time getting on the lifts at the same time or what? :)
Only two mad coops so far. Some days ago, while we were still building up the computer network here, we managed to record three 2-player coops with Alex, all tablefillers:
  • Mcomplex, easy 100% in 1:25 - Lots of cool tricks here!
  • Mexx1, easy run in 0:09 - A nice SSG boost to the exit.
  • Bbelief 5, nightmare run in 0:20.
Even more days ago, Alex asked me to update these new Single player demos that he has done:
  • BBelief 5, Nightmare run in 0:28 - One second faster than Optic. (We just received the same time from Martin Selinus, but Alex's demo was the first one)
  • Bbelief 5, Easy 100% in 2:24 - 38(!) seconds faster than Stefan.

That's all so far. Other people's demos will be posted later. (Nolan just woke up btw). Anyway, for the other speedcon attendees, have a nice trip and welcome!

Leaving...too :) - 4:35 PM

Yea, I'm off too. Just rounding up my work here at the university for my 6-day leave...see previous update for 'more info' on my destination :)

Wednesday, June 7th by Nolan

Leaving... - 6:07 PM

Very shotly I'm leaving to go on a trip, so you won't here from me again until I....reach my destination. Most of you will already know where I'm going and why, and the rest will find out soon enough :)

Three demos before I leave:

  • Robert Axelsson improved the easy run of Coagula by one more second to get 0:23, by getting a bit of help.
  • Janne improved the easy 100% of iksqp2 by three seconds to get 2:03, now the 8th time he's done that demo :)
  • I did another low quality marathon...an easy run through the first rogue episode in a time of 10:29.
See you on the other side.

Tuesday, June 6th by Nolan

I give up - 7:58 PM

I've been trying to make really good demos recently but have decided to give up on that for a while and just post what I have even though I'm not satisfied with them:
  • Nightmare 100% of r2m1 in 4:03, 23 seconds faster than my previous demo.
  • Nightmare 100% marathon through the 2nd rogue episode, in a time of 27:54 (time for EH is 23:38).
  • Nightmare run marathon through the whole of the hipnotic pak in 17:46. This one I never tried too hard :)
  • Nightmare run marathon through just the 3rd ep of hipnotic in 4:52...tried to make this one really good but oh well.
  • Nightmare 100% of zer1m7 in 7:48. I did this over two months ago and never improved it...
Thomas did three more id-level 100% demos:
  • Nightmare 100% of e1m8 in 1:21, three seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • Easy 100% of e2m6 in 4:11, 15 seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • Nightmare 100% of e3m3 in 2:12, 20 seconds faster than my old keyboard demo.
We had three submissions to improve the easy run of Coagula:
  • First, Ken sent in a 0:26, promising to do better...
  • The next day, he did and sent in 0:25.
  • But Qurre stepped in and got 0:24, equalling the nightmare time.
Valeriy Burmistrov has improved both the 100% demos on doom2_07:
  • He got 0:11 on easy, one second faster than Matthias, who thought 12 was optimal.
  • He improved Stefan's 100% on nightmare by one second to get 0:22.
Thanks to Attila, there's 11 more of those old demos available now...including a really really old nightmare 100% of e1m1 in a time of 1:52 done in July 96. Also a 1:34 for e1m1 NH which I do believe was the first quake speed demo I saw, around December 96...lets say I was inspired :)

Pre-SpeedCon Madcoops baby! - 2:20 AM

Just to warm ourselves up a bit for SpeedCon, the big speedrunner's meeting next week, we decided to do some madcooping today. Also, Ilkka's got his ISDN back recently, making his ping playable, finally.

First, Ilkka, Fab, Attila and I did an easy 100% of IKSPQ1, getting 0:50, which ofcourse is new. Later in the day (Attila had left in the meantime), we hooked up again to do some more, and Marlo joined us to replace Attila: we beat an older 4player-madcoop! We improved the old 4p Easy 100% of E1M5 (Gunnar, Will, Ilkka & Rikkert) by no less than 15(!) seconds, to get 0:29, go check it.

Friday, June 2nd (2nd update) by Nolan

Loads of demos + the past - 6:55 AM

First I'll start with all the demos sent in by crazy d00d Optic:
  • Yonatan's nearly 3 year old demo didn't last as a record long...Optic went and improved it by 13 seconds to get 1:43.
  • He improved a few of David Eva's (Mr J) old demos. Easy run of black3 in 1:11, six seconds faster.
  • Nightmare run of mexx4 in 1:35, 12 seconds faster.
  • Easy run of mexx7 in 1:46, five seconds faster.
  • Nightmare run of mexx7 in 1:51, five seconds faster than Matthias.
  • Easy run of mexx9c in 1:44, three seconds faster than Stefan.
  • Justin smashed Stefan's old nightmare run of ikspq5 by 44 seconds to get 1:22.
  • And he did one 100% demo, of bbsecret on easy, in 1:35, ten seconds faster than Stefan.
All normal slots of the new Coagula map have now been filled:
  • Peter Fincher did the easy run in 0:27, his first demo to SDA.
  • Stefan did the nightmare 100% in 3:30...a bit slow, but it fills the hole :)
Alexander Osipov has done two demos on bbelief6:
  • Easy run in 0:40, six seconds faster than Optic.
  • Easy 100% in 2:31, 18 seconds faster than my previous record, which was one of the oldest 25.
I'm now down to less than 10 records on the oldest list....when it first showed up I had 23 :)
Stefan improved the easy run on dxm and filled the hole for the nightmare run, using a new trick:
  • Easy run in 0:17, nine seconds faster than Mr Shambler.
  • Nightmare run in 0:20.
Shortly after Jesse updated to say he updated RDE about Robert's improvement of his nightmare run of rd1m2 by two seconds to 0:55, Robert sent in a 0:54.

The last demo of this load is another coop marathon by Ravage and Shine. They improved Robert and Alex's easy run through ep3 by 20 seconds to get 2:37.

Ok I lied because I almost forgot to mention this *again*.... three weeks ago I improved Matthias's easy 100% of hip3m3 by 28 seconds to get 2:03. I added it to the tables, but forgot to mention it in the news! doh!

The old news is not gone forever!

Before SDA launched in April of 1998, there were two pages....one for skill 0 demos (muad_dib's page) and another for skill 3 demos (nightmare speed demos, run only by myself). Back when I did NSD, when the news got "too long" I would delete it and there was a message at the end saying The old news is gone forever... Yes I was dumb for not archiving it somewhere, I know, as it erased some of the beginnings of Quake speed running. Well for some unknown reason, Jesse [who in his is update originally claimed to be jesus :)] had saved one of the news pages from NSD for a period covering 23.11.97 through 20.01.98. You can read it here but there's not much since there was maybe 5 demos a week back then unlike now :) (and I'm never complaining when I say that) None of the links work of course cuz I was also stupid enough to delete demos when they got improved.... That's why a lot of the old demos here at sda have no links to them. I've tried to recover as many of those old demos as possible, as some people had saved them somewhere, but it seems I've got all I can ever have now..... unless there's someone out there that has them.... if so I'd really appreciate if you would email me :)

New RDE demo - 1:49 AM

For your information, a new RDE demo was updated at the Runner's Delight page, along with some useless bits of random inf0.

Link of the day goes out to Jeff K, he 0wnz j00. JeffK. p class="d">Tuesday, May 30 by Nolan

Insert title here - 7:12 AM

Hey, we've got two demos on the level just added 12 hours ago:
  • Robert Axelsson did a nightmare run in 0:24.
  • Stefan did the easy 100% in a time of 1:52.
Next, Shine has done four different marathons on the id levels:
  • He improved Optic's previous nightmare run of ep2 by three seconds to get 6:39.
  • He improved Marlo's easy run of ep3 by 10 seconds to get 3:10.
  • He did the nightmare run of ep3 in a time of 5:50, finally filling all the holes in the marathon tables for the id levels.
  • He improved his coop easy of ep1 run with Ravage by five seconds to get 2:25.
Matthias Belz improved both 100%s on The Crucible, giving him all four records there (a popular thing to do lately).
  • Easy 100% in 1:49, 35 seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • Nightmare 100% in 2:30, new.
And a bunch of other demos :)
  • Daniel improved Peter's nightmare 100% of e1m5 by three seconds to get 1:39.
  • Thomas Bergendorff improved the easy run of placebo by 13 seconds to get 2:06, using a torch as a shortcut ledge. Note that the easy run is the only demo ever done on this level....
  • Ken improved his recent easy 100% of climb by two seconds to get 1:01.
  • Qurre, a player who only did 4 demos on the flyer map in the past, stepped in and improved demo #2 on the list, my nightmare 100% of The Elektra Complex by 25 seconds to get a time of 1:56. He used a completely different route.
  • Ravage and Shine did a nightmare run on e1m1 in a time of 0:24, three seconds faster than the current single player time.
Well it turned out to be about 13 hours instead of 12...so sue me :)

New level - 6:15 PM

I just downloaded the new level reviewed at TeamShambler's level review site and decided to add it right away for a few reasons. It is rather small, so those of you who don't like big levels will be happy. It is rather non-linear, so there's many possible routes, especially for 100% demos. There seems to be plenty of ammo and health/armor to survive and kill everyone even on nightmare. The map is Coagula by Tim Elek. Be sure to read the review at teamshambler too.

There's still holes in the tables for that last set of levels I've added... but since it's been a while I think perhaps some of you have forgotten about them so I'm going to remind you :) Remember that a table filling demo doesn't have to be extremely fast or include all the tricks there can be in it....

I expect some table filling fun... I'll do another update (this time with demos) in about 12 hours.

The update I kept putting off - 9:18 PM

Optic has improved several demos, not all of which are on the list (amazing)
  • Nightmare run of ikspq4 in 2:17, 26 seconds faster than Jesse.
  • Easy 100% of The Epoch Turning in 2:01, seven seconds faster than his previous record.
  • Nightmare run of EvilDead Cabin in 1:05, three seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • Easy run of black1 in 1:03, two seconds faster than himself again.
  • Nightmare run of black1 in 1:16, 17 seconds faster than Stefan.
  • Nightmare run of black2 in 1:10, 14 seconds faster than Stefan.
Daniel Magnusson now has all the records on Far Beyond Reality:
  • He improved Mattias's easy 100% by 31 seconds to get 2:06.
  • He did the first nightmare run in a time of 1:57.
  • He also did the nightmare 100% in 4:39.
Thomas Stubgaard improved both of the 100%s on e1m8 again:
  • Easy 100% in 0:56, three seconds faster.
  • Nightmare 100% in 1:24, one second faster.
Thomas Bergendorff did two demos:
  • He improved his easy 100% of dxm by seven seconds to get 1:47.
  • Remember how we thought it was impossible to get the one secret on damaul3b? Well Thomas showed that it isn't, he did an easy 100% with both secrets in a time of 1:13. Because it's so hard to do it though, we will still not require it for a 100%. See the damaul3b page for info.
Jozsef improved his nightmare run on The Black Crypt by yet another second to equal the easy time of 0:19.

A new way for a demo to show up on 'the list' - 7:22 AM

The usual way for a demo to appear on the oldest 25 records list is for one of the records on it to be improved and then a slightly newer old demo that's still a record falls onto the list.... That's been happening a lot... the list has been servings it's purpose. But I've got a new way for a demo to show up on the list....and that is finding an old demo that was forgotten. It's so old that it's now the #1 oldest demo on the list! And it's not by me :) It's by Yonatan; it's a nightmare 100% of The Guardhouse in a time of 1:56, 12 seconds faster than the "old" time by Optic. See it's txt file for more info.

And now for some demos done more recently...all of which brought demos onto the list the normal way :)

  • I improved my nightmare 100% of r2m1 by just over three minutes to get 4:26.
  • Optic improved his nightmare run of p_se_3 by ten seconds to get 0:38.
  • He improved his nightmare run of ikspq1 by four seconds to get 1:01.
  • And he improved his easy un of The NetherWorld by four seconds as well, to get 1:11.
  • Ken improved both of Optic's 100%s on climb by two seconds, getting 1:03 on easy and 1:02 on nightmare.

Another one demo update... - 7:35 PM

First off, thanks to planetquake, SDA is the site of the day today! If you've never been here before and wondering what it's about, check out the misc info section first and then go to the Quake button to find thousands of speed demos for all official Quake levels and many levels created by users. If you've ever seen and enjoyed any of the Quake done Quick demos and productions, then you're sure to like the demos here too.

The new demos this time is the nightmare 100% marathon through ep4, by Marlo. Note that this is not the ep4 section from his big 86:48 all of Quake marathon (make sure you get that...). It is the slightly faster part from one of his earlier attempts. The time is 25:16, 1:20 faster than the previous time.

A one demo update... - 6:28 AM

This must be a busy time for most people, perhaps because of school or something.... but I have my usual amount of free time as I still dont have a summer job. Today I improved Matthias's old nightmare 100% of mexx10b by 2:29 to get a time of 4:53, and giving me all four records on that level.

I haven't heard anything from Will, he must have fallen into a black hole or something.... so I can't say what's going on with Run of the Week.

Only 10 to go - 7:08 PM

10 more of my keyboard demos that are still records that is :)

Thomas did three 100% demos:

  • He improved Martin's easy 100% of e1m8 by two seconds to get the time under one minute: 0:59.
  • He improved my (keyboard) nightmare 100% of e1m8 by 21 seconds to get 1:25. That's more than I expected that one to be improvable by.
  • He improved his own recent nightmare 100% of e2m7 by four seconds to get 2:50.
I did two nightmare demos:
  • I improved my (keyboard) nightmare 100% of hip2m3 by 33 seconds to get 4:21.
  • I also improved Matthias's nightmare run of mexx10b by an even two minutes to get 2:12.
And two other custom demos:

Wednesday, May 17 (2nd update) by Nolan

10 new demos - 6:58 AM

Here's my promised demo update :)

Alexander Osipov took over bbelief1, improving all four records:

  • 0:15 for the easy run, one second faster than Marlo.
  • 1:40 for the easy 100%, two seconds faster than Ilkka.
  • 0:16 for the nightmare run, one second faster than Marlo.
  • 1:59 for the nightmare 100%, three seconds faster than Marlo.
I did four demos:
  • Since nobody else wanted to (or couldn't figure out how), I did the easy 100% of a3 in 3:40.
  • I got that nightmare 100% of r2m4 that I mentioned good enough... I got a time of 5:42, which is 2:31 faster than Tim.
  • I improved my easy run of mexx10b by 29 seconds to get 1:40.
  • I also improved Matthias's easy 100% of mexx10b by 55 seconds to get 3:15.
Optic only did one demo for this update... he must be sick :)
  • He improved my easy 100% of r1m3 by 20 seconds to get 2:09
And finally, Jozsef improved his nightmare run on The Black Crypt by one second to get 0:20. He used up all but his last 1 point of health here...

Classic Quake lives! - 4:40 AM

Today's planetquake pic of the day is about "classic quake" as it has come to be known, and how there's nothing new with it anymore.... Hmm, well I seem to recall about 50 demos sent in per week to this site all on classic Quake :) So if you miss your classic Quake, why not try a little speedrunning?

I'll have an update with demos up a little later...

More Optic and Radix demos - 8:03 AM

Small update for you...
First we have three more demos from crazy dude Optic, all of which are improvments to demos that were on "the list":
  • He improved my old keyboard nightmare 100% of h2m5 by a large 1:12 to get 2:43. Only 12 of my keyboard demos left...
  • Easy run of hayduke1 in 0:30, a two seconds improvment.
  • Nightmare run of The Bastardry in 0:23, a one second improvment.
And four demos from me, three of which are "the list" improvements:
  • Easy 100% of r2m3 in 2:10, 17 seconds faster.
  • Nightmare 100% of r2m3 in 2:55, 41 seconds faster.
  • Easy 100% of bbelief7 in 0:41, five seconds faster and extremely optimized :)
  • Nightmare run of r2m1 in 2:30, which is 1:27 faster than Stefan...
  • I've improved Tim's nightmare 100% of r2m4 by over 1:45 but it's not good enough yet, so there's no demo on this dot :)

Saturday, May 13 by Ilkka

Optic - 3:00 PM

I simply couldn't come up with any better headline, but it describes this update pretty well, though. Just guess what is coming...

Optic, the one who has sent clearly over 600 demos to SDA already, doesn't seem to stop. During the last couple of days, he has produced seven demos for the Prodigy Special Edition plus two demos for other maps:

  • Prodigy map 1, Nightmare run in 0:44 - Seven seconds faster than Gunnar's last surviving record :|
  • Prodigy map 2, Easy run in 0:57 - Four seconds faster than Stefan.
  • Prodigy map 2, Nightmare run in 1:00 - Nine seconds faster than Nolan.
  • Prodigy map 3, Easy run in 0:25 - Two seconds faster than his ancient record.
  • Prodigy map 3b, Easy run in 0:28 - Four seconds faster than Evan.
  • Prodigy map 3b, Nightmare run in 0:33 - Nine seconds faster than Matthias.
  • Prodigy map 4, Nightmare run in 0:59 - 20 seconds faster than Nolan.
  • Then the other two demos. First he did Numb Nimbus, easy 100% in 4:15 - Filling the tables.
  • Secondly he improved his old Easy 100% of Hip2M5 by 11 seconds, getting 1:28. Nice job Justin... :)
Demos by others:
  • Thomas Bergendorff recorded Nightmare 100% of Damaul3b in 0:51. Note! Thomas only gets 1/2 secrets. He says in the .txt that it might be possible to get both of them. Anyone got the skillz to do that?
  • Martin Selinus did Map 2 in the Black episode in 0:56 - Easy run, 7 seconds faster than Carl Tholin.
That's about all this time. I moved some news from the front page to the Old news.

Marathon Mania!!! - 8:45 PM

Hey, I've got three brand spankin new marathon demos for you.... over two hours worth of quake demos just from them :) First we have:

The biggest improvement ever!

Hey remember that 3 hours long nightmare 100% marathon through all of Quake? Well for those who watched it, you saw that it was very cautious playing... Well, Marlo Galinski has never heard of the word "caution"... he did the same marathon in a blazing fast 86:48. This is One hour, 40 minutes and 4 seconds faster than Tim's demo :) Or for those of you who like improvements in whole seconds.... 6004 seconds! It's only 14 minutes slower than the original Qd100Q, and of course he had to do it all in one sitting... He's been trying it for a while as his txt file says. Make sure you get this.... come on, it's only 7.5 MB! :P

The other marathons are by me:

  • Nightmare 100% of hip3 in 17:16.
  • Easy 100% of Beyond Belief in the same exact friggin time..... 17:16. Yes you can do marathons of Beyond Belief... but before you do you should get the updated BBStats as in the process of making it I found a dumb kill related bug in it....
And a few custom level demos as well:
  • Thomas Bergendorff improved Matthias's easy 100% on dxm by 34 seconds to get 1:54.
  • Justin Redmond did the first easy 100% on damaul3b, in a time of 0:49. Note that we determined that it's impossible to get the one secret....
  • Ken improved both his 100%s on dma1... first getting 0:25 on easy, then managing 0:24 on nightmare! So he went back and did 0:24 on easy as well :)
  • Jozsef improved Optic's nightmare run on The Black Crypt by one second to get 0:21.
  • My h3m1 demo from my marathon above improves the current record by Carl by 14 seconds so it is available separate, in a time of 3:28.

Old demos! + some new - 2:10 AM

Thanks to Matthias Belz, I have more of my old keyboard demos, that are no longer records, for you to laugh at :) Among the highlights include my original NH on e1m6, in 1:53 (current time is 0:53); My NR of e1m7 in 0:48 (current time is 0:29); and my NH of e4m1 in 1:53 (current time is 1:09). To save you trouble if you want to watch my old demos to see how bad I was back then, I put them all up in one 1.9 mb zip file.

And I can't forget the new demos too:

  • Thomas Stubgaard improved another one of my keyboard demos that was still a record, the nightmare 100% of e2m7, by 50 seconds, to get a time of 2:54.
  • Optic improved both of my runs on r2m3, first the easy run by seven seconds to get 1:30.
  • Then he improved the nightmare run by 14 seconds to get 1:42.
  • Optic also improved his nightmare run of ikspq3 by one second to get 0:17.
  • Martin Selinus improved Optic's easy 100% of e4m2 by one second to get 1:11.
  • Martin also improved the easy run on the Guardhouse by one second to get 0:23.
  • Martin also did the easy 100% of the Guardhouse, improving it by two seconds to get 0:51.

Sunday, May 7th by Nolan

Nightmareish update - 5:15 AM

Six new demos for you, all on nightmare skill, three of which are improvments to demos on the oldest list:
  • Optic improved his run of r1m6 by five seconds to get 1:25.
  • Optic also improved his run of bbelief3 by nine seconds to get 0:59.
  • Justin Redmond improved his run of damaul3b by one more second to get 0:28.
  • Thomas Bergendorff improved Matthias's 100% of dxm by 39 seconds, to a time that is now faster than the easy 100%... 2:18.
  • Tim Doherty improved his 100% of r2m4 by a large amount, 2:43, to bring the time down to 8:13.
  • I improved my old keyboard 100% of h3m3 by 42 seconds to get 2:24. Only 14 keyboard demos left...

Re: Life is good | Yeah! - 11:30 PM

Look, I can't help it. Alcohol needs me. Without me the five largest breweries in the world would probably go bust.

Misc page updated

There's biogs for Ilkka and myself up on the Misc page now, it was some time coming, and there are some other slight restructures there, too. I don't know whether restructures is a word, but it sound about right.

Saturday, May 6th (2nd update) by Ilkka

Re: Life is good | Yeah! - 7:30 PM

Great, here's too demos that I've done...
  • Scourge of Armagon's hipdm1 in 0:38. 0wned Nolan a big time :)
  • Then, The Mining Complex easy 100% in 1:50. I just had to have one record for my own map... :) Ten seconds faster than Marlo.

And Will, "being drunbk" is no excuse! That's proved now...... hehe

Saturday, May 6th by Jesse

Life is good - 5:30 PM

Some time to sit behind the computer! The sun is shining like mad outside, I've got a fair amount of cold beers stacked away in the fridge, listening to some crazy Bad Company dubplates, and tonight there's a mad party in town, what else can you ask for!!

Right. Just because I'm in a f@cking good mood, I'm quickly updating these here marathon runs. Robert Axelsson sent me a demo a long time ago, but because I'm blind I overlooked & deleted the thing. Sorry mate. Anyway, he and Alex did a nice easy coop run of Episode 3 in 2:57.

Ravage and Shine also sent in another demo: they improved Robert & Alex' easy coop marathon run of Episode 1 by 12 seconds to get 2:30.

Friday, May 5th by Nolan

The eternal holes have finally been filled - 8:08 AM

And I'm the crazy person who did it... I'm talking about the last two holes in the Rogue tables, of course. I've done a total of five demos on r2mX levels in the past few days:
  • Easy 100% of r2m1 in 3:49, filling the hole.
  • Easy 100% of r2m4 in 4:43, which improves Tim's previous time by 1:49!
  • Nightmare run of r2m4 in 2:31, only 40 seconds slower than the easy run... quite quick considering the amount of monsters in your way... This finally fills the rogue tables :)
  • Easy 100% of r2m5 in 3:24, eight seconds faster than Optic.
  • I now have all seven EH records for the r2mX levels... so it's kind of appropriate that I also improved my marathon through the episode. I got 23:38, which is 5 minutes and 6 seconds faster than my previous time.
Dont think that I'm done with the 2nd Rogue episode yet :)

Now that I've pimped my own demos, other people have made some too :P
Optic improved three of the demos on the oldest 25 list:

  • He got 1:41 for the easy 100% of h1m4, seven seconds faster than his previous demo.
  • He took away another of Yonatan Donner's surviving records, the nightmare 100% of h2m4 by improving it by 1:55 to get 3:17.
  • And he improved my nightmare run of mexx9a by 18 seconds to get 2:00.
We finally got some demos on the new level Dextromethorphan:
  • Matthias Belz did the easy 100% in 2:28.
  • He also did the nightmare 100% in 2:57.
  • I discovered that Mr Shambler and Scard did a nightmare run coop demo on this level, and I didn't know about it when I added the level... so I added it now, the time is 0:10.
And two more demos...
  • Markus Taipale did his first nightmare 100% by improving Optic's record on e2m2 by 21 seconds to get 1:32. Nice way to 'start' :)
  • Daniel Magnusson filled the hole for the nightmare run of The NetherWorld by getting a time of 1:52, only 19 seconds faster than the 100%.
Arrgh, I spent almost two hours just uploading files for this update... I can't wait until September when I'll have a decent connection...

Thursday, May 4rd by Will

Maxim Koshelev rules - 3:39 PM

Huge apologies to Maxim because I forgot his contest entry. He got 1:04 which puts him 3rd in the 100% section. It won't happen again.

Wednesday, May 3rd by Will

Electric boogaloo! - 8:21 PM

Yup, RotW is back. Normal service should be resumed. There are some good contests coming up, too, if my computer will start to behave itself. Go and take a look at the results from contest 5.

Tuesday, May 2nd (2nd update) by Nolan

I think I hurt myself - 9:32 PM

Damn you Jesse, you made me bump my head! :)
Here's your usual assortment of demos:
  • Peter improved my nightmare 100% of e1m4 by 27 seconds to get a time of 2:43.
  • I improved Will's nightmare 100% of r2m6 (you knew that was coming, didn't you?) by 1:04, to get 4:01.
  • I also improved my easy run of r2m6 by seven seconds to get 2:29.
  • Attila has improved the easy run of e3m7 by... uh, the usual two seconds, to get 0:44.
  • Justin Redmond improved Marlo's nightmare run of damaul3b by one second to get 0:29.
  • Daniel Magnusson aka Max Rebo filled two holes in the custom tables, first doing a nightmare run of Carnage in 1:47. This level is very hard to survive on nightmare, this is only 19 seconds faster than the NH.
  • He also did the nightmare run of The fatal place in a time of 0:58, only ten seconds slower than the easy run.
  • Two weeks ago, Jozsef improved his nightmare run of e2m6 by one second to get 1:16. I put the demo in the tables, but forgot to mention it in the news... sorry Jozsef.
  • Ravage and Shine improved the coop easy run of e2m5 by two seconds to get 0:20.
Just some worthless info for you, in the month of April there was over 27 MB worth of demos added to SDA!

Tuesday, May 2nd by Jesse

Sup all - 2:15 AM

Haven't updated any demos in ages, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to post this marathon I received today (Nolan will probably faint again when he sees I've updated :)
  • Easy coop marathon run of Episode 2 in 3:36 by Ravage & Shine, that's no less than 22 seconds faster than Robert & Alexander.
In further news: the RDE update that's due has been delayed a bit. Don't worry, progress has been good, especially since Ilkka helped me solve some of the route problems when he visited me last week (which was just mad fun btw).

Sunday, April 30th (2nd update) by Woh ha hey

The trumpeter in the next field has corn in his ears - 4:48 PM

I've changed Run of the Week slightly. But don't worry, it's still going on. Head over and take a look.

Sunday, April 30th by Nolan

100% satisfaction - 7:27 AM

7 out of the 9 demos in this update are 100% demos so that's the reason for my strange subject...
  • Optic did an easy 100% of The Darkness Within in a time of 1:39.
  • Optic also improved one of my ancient keyboard nightmare 100% demos, the one on r1m2, by 42 seconds to get 3:06.
  • I improved one of those ancient demos of mine too... the nightmare 100% of hipdm1. Only by nine seconds though as I didn't try very much; got a time of 2:24.
  • I destr...err improved another of will's demos... the easy 100% of r2m6, by 52 seconds, to get 3:12. More high quality :)
  • Ravage improved the easy 100% of jzblue_4 by one second to get a time of 0:13 using a boost from Chthon's dying throw...
  • Thomas Stubgaard improved his recent nightmare 100% of e3m6 by another 27 seconds to get a time of 4:36. That's like more than two minutes faster than my original time for this :P
  • Arturo/Ken improved Marlo's nightmare 100% of dma1 by one second to get 0:26.
I can't forget the two plain-old-runs that were sent in:
  • Robert improved Steiner's easy run of e1m8 by three seconds to get 0:30.
  • Optic improved Valeriy's nightmare run on The Darkness Within by six seconds to get 0:50.
Fileplanet is down as I do this update (gee, that's a suprise) so I can't even be sure that the links I put in are correct... if they turn out to be borked you can find the demos through the table links of course. For now you may be able to get the demos from http://ftp1.gamespy.com/pub/cdrom/sda/filename.zip or from the cdrom link above.

Saturday, April 29th by The Real Slacker

Sigh :( - 4:50 AM

Well, I guess it's me who's really slacking. Run of the Week just takes a helluva lot of time, especially when I have to come up with a completely new map with new QuakeC etc. It's much harder to do at uni too, as there is so much more other work and I don't have such good access to computers as I do at home. Anyway, that's one reason why RotW has been delayed for the first time. There are others, but blah blah I'm sure you don't want to hear any more excuses. There are some people who haven't sent me their demos again, If you can't do so, at least tell me the time and I'll believe you and put the demo up when you have the time to send it.

Friday, April 28th by Nolan

The end of the mad updates? - 5:13 PM

This will probably be the last in my series of mad updates, as today I leave university for the summer... I'll have more free time probably but I won't be online as much... I'll still update though, so don't worry :)
  • damaul3b is quite popular for the run, several improvments for the easy run have been sent in, but the first one to be sent since the last udpate, was the fastest. Marlo got a time of 0:26!
  • Marlo also got 0:30, for the nightmare run, five seconds faster.
  • Stefan has filled one of the last holes in the Rogue tables, doing an easy 100% of r1m7 in 3:24.
  • The war over e3m6 easy 100% may be over but Thomas has now improved Daniel's nightmare 100% of e3m6 by 1:23 (!) to get 5:03. Is this the start of another war?
  • A new player named Valeriy Burmistrov has sent in a nightmare run on the new map, The Darkness Within, in a time of 0:56.
Attila and Peter have done five coop demos on jzblue maps:
  • Easy run of #2 in 0:08, a one second improvement.
  • The rest are all on #4...Easy run in 0:04, another one second improvment.
  • Nightmare run in 0:04 as well.
  • 100%s in 0:09 on both easy and nightmare; interesting how they do these.

Thursday, April 27th (2nd update) by Will

Get working Nolan! No slacking! - 10:00 PM

Yup, it's happened again. My email account has gone over the limit, and I've lost some of the demos for RotW. I'm not amused. I have most of them, but at the moment I don't know which, and I don't want to say because I'd rather keep things secret for as long as possible (although you guys are probably communicating over ICQ anyways). Please mail me to them again ASAP, everyone. I have a cunning plan to make sure that this never happens again (delete my entire account before checking my mail!). Again, sorry.

What's an exam? - 4:07 AM

You'd think I'd have better things to do during the week of my final exams than update sda all the time and make demos on the side... but I dont! :)
  • I got the 4th slot on r2m7 by doing a nightmare 100% in 4:19, an amazing 2:37 faster than Will :)
  • Martin Selinus made three demos, starting with an easy run of e4m2, in a time of 0:31, one second faster than Ilkka.
  • He also improved my easy 100% of e1m8 by three seconds to get 1:01.
  • And he also improved Optic's easy run of Beyond belief5 by one second (Optic's demo was on the 25 oldest list) to get 0:23.
  • Marlo has done his first DoE record by improving Optic's recent easy run of r1m6 by two seconds to get 1:10.
  • Robert and Rickard did the first coop on e2m7, a nightmare run in 0:35, one second faster than Robert's single player record.
Suicide Nation craze?

Five demos on damaul3 and damaul3b, definitly the most popular among the new maps, as some have yet to receive any submissions.

  • Justin Redmond improved Thomas Bergendroff's easy run of damaul3b by three seconds to get 0:30.
  • Thomas B did a nightmare run of damaul3b in 0:35.
  • Marlo filled the rest of the holes for damaul3, getting 2:07 for the easy run, 2:07 for the nightmare run, and 2:32 for the easy 100%.
OK, I do actually have some homework to do, so no updates until tomorrow night now :)

The madman strikes again - 8:25 AM

A total of 7 more demos for you:
  • Alexander Osipov has improved Optic's easy 100% of e3m5 by two seconds to get 1:34. Alexander now has all four records for e3m5.
  • Robert Axelsson was apparently not satisifed with his 0:33 for the nightmare run of e1m8 as he improved it again, getting 0:32, which is now one second faster than the easy run!
  • Markus Taipale improved my easy 100% of e2m5 by seven seconds to get 1:28.
  • Thomas Bergendorff improved Justin Redmond's easy run of Suicide Nation (b) by 17 seconds to get 0:33.
  • I improved Optic's easy run of r2m7 by two seconds, getting 0:56.
  • I also improved Optic's nightmare run of r2m7 by two seconds, getting 0:57.
  • And I also did the easy 100% of r2m7, improving Will's old demo by 1:27 (!!) The new time is 4:04, another one of my high quality 100% demos, I think :)

Non-Mini update - 5:47 AM

We've got a fairly large number of demos considering the last update was just 24 hours ago... Everybody says I've been updating like a madman... one reason is because the updates have gotten easy for me :)

Ilkka decided to be a meanie and improve Martin's easy 100% of e1m6 by two seconds to reclaim his record... he got a time of 0:49.

Optic improved three more of his demos that were on the 25 oldest list, but this time it brought three of my demos on to replace them instead of his...

  • Nightmare run of h3m4 in 1:22, a nine second improvement.
  • Easy 100% of r1m2 in 2:24, 19 seconds faster.
  • Easy 100% of r1m4 in 2:50, 14 seconds faster.
A few demos have been sent in for the new levels that I added:
  • Marlo improved Shambler's easy run of Numb Nimbus by four seconds to get 0:48. I forgot to mention when I added it, but the route for this level includes an ogre grenade jump and a vore ball jump!
  • Marlo also did an easy 100% of Suicide Nation in 2:32.
  • Justin Redmond did the easy run for Suicide Nation (b) in a time of 0:51. Hmm, he sent in a 0:50. as I was doing this update....
Ravage has a suprise... he improved both runs of jzblue_4 by one second to get 0:09 on both easy and nightmare.

Stefan filled one of the harder holes in the custom tables by doing a nightmare 100% of p_se_xxx, the secret arena in Prodigy Special Edition. He got 1:32.

There's two demos from me as well:

  • I improved Optic's easy run of r2m4 by two seconds to get 1:51.
  • I also did a nightmare 100% marathon through the first episode of Hipnotic, getting a pretty quick time of 14:23.

Monday, April 24th (2nd update) by Nolan

Mini update - 6:12 AM

Just a quick update to show the demos that have arrived in my mailbox since the last (level adding) update:
  • Marlo has done a nightmare 100% through the jzblue episode (I thought everybody had forgot about it). He got a time of 2:21.
  • Shine has done "The usual 2 seconds improvement" for the easy run of e3m7, getting 0:46.
  • Optic improved his easy run of h3m4 (was on the 25 list) by seven seconds to get 1:08.
  • And for the first demo on the new maps, Optic improved Shambler's run on darkness by six seconds to get 0:48.
The download link for Numb Nimbus was wrong in the last update, but I fixed it...

Six new maps for your speedrunning pleasure... - 2:25 AM

The new levels I'm adding aren't going to optimized as quickly as the last set I added was... They're a bit longer. Not ridiculously long though, so it should still be easy to fill them up with decent demos at least.

Before I get to them, I made three demos to fill some of the remaining holes in the custom level tables. They're pretty good, but shouldn't be too hard to beat...

Now for the new levels. Mr Shambler has done easy runs of four of them from his site, but just like last time I'm sure they can be beaten :) Have fun.... and be aware that I won't add any more levels until these get filled up to my satisfaction :)

Two demos from Optic.... and two demos from me. - 5:10 AM

It seems the page listing the oldest 25 demos is serving it's purpose as Optic has improved two more of the demos that were on there (of course that just brought two more of his other demos on to replace them...)
  • Easy run of r1m6 in 1:12, three seconds faster than his previous record.
  • Easy run of r1m7 in 1:30, seven seconds faster than my time.
I have improved two of Optic's easy 100% demos:
  • I got 1:47 on e3m7, two seconds better.
  • I also improved his demo on hip1m2 by 24 seconds to get 2:13
Old news recovered

SDA's news from September of 1998 through December of 1999 has been recovered from the broken database and has been put up at reallyoldnews.html. If you weren't around for that part of sda then it should make an interesting read for you... and if you were around, then it will bring back memories :)

I think Will and I are having communication problems... - 7:00 AM

Since Will's not on ICQ anymore, the only way we seem to be able to exchange information is here on SDA :) Speaking of Will, I have made a demo that shows that it is possible to get a score of 205 in the recent Run of the Week. I used some cheats, but it should be possible without them... see the text file for more detail. It's just to show what could have been done....

On to the demos!

  • Robert Axelsson has improved two of his recent nightmare runs. First, he got 0:33 for the nightmare run of e1m8, one second better than his last demo.
  • He also improved the nightmare run of e3m4 by another second to get 0:40.
  • Martin Selinus has improved Ilkka's easy 100% of e1m6 by two seconds, getting a time of 0:51.
  • Optic has improved what used to be demo #2 on the list of the 25 oldest records... it was one of Yonatan Donner's few surviving records, the nightmare 100% of hip3m2. Optic improved it by 21 seconds and got 2:57.
  • Ken improved his recent easy 100% of dma1 by two seconds to get 0:26.
  • He also sent in a 27 for the nightmare 100%, but Marlo beat him to it, getting 0:27 as well.
  • Robert and Rickard did two coop demos of doom2_08 (Tricks and Traps). They got 0:20 for the easy run, four seconds faster than the single player record, and 0:22 for the nightmare run, three seconds faster than the single player.
Note to Will: I look forward to it :)

It damn well is an excuse! =) - 11:15 PM

Sorry about the late RotW results to all you Europeans who are in bed by now (or out getting drunk like real men should). But they're up now, so go take a look. And Nolan, when SpeedCon comes, I'm gonna make sure you get very drunk =)

I rule the elements! - 6:53 AM

I recently posted an easy 100% on r2m2 by myself... well I've done all three of the other demos for the level as well:
  • Easy run in 1:04, 20 seconds faster than my old record.
  • Nightmare run in 1:32, new.
  • Nightmare 100% in 2:22, 34 seconds faster than my old record.
So I did all four demos within a week.... similar to what I did back in March of 98 on r2m3. And since I still have those four records, and these are the Elemental Fury levels, then as the title says, I rule the elements :)

There's been five other demos sent in since my last update, even though it was less than seven hours ago!:

  • Robert Axelsson has improved Optic's nightmare run of e3m4 by one second to get 0:41.
  • He also improved Chris Longden's nightmare run of e2m7 by one second, ending up with 0:36.
  • Ken did the easy 100% of dma1 in 0:28 as well, one second faster than Marlo.
  • Marlo and FAB sent in two coop demos, which were aparantly sent in three months ago but were misplaced... They Improved Ilkka/Juho's easy 100% of e1m6 by three secodns to get 0:29.
  • They also improved Ilkka/Juho's easy 100% of e4m1 by two seconds to get 0:37.
More levels may be coming as soon as this weekend, but don't hold me to that...

Oh, and Will, being "drunbk" is no excuse :)

Re: Why doesn't anybody else post demos anymore? - 4:30 AM

Because I'm too drunbk.

Why doesn't anybody else post demos anymore? - 12:20 AM

I'm sorry to say that neither Thomas nor Daniel has improved that easy 100% of e3m6... and I can't do an update until they do because It's just not worth it without one....

oh what the hell I'll do it anyway :)

  • Robert Axelsson has improved Steiner Vatne's 1997 record for the nightmare run of e1m8 by two seconds, getting a time of 0:34.
  • Optic improved his recently posted, 10 month old, nightmare 100% demo of tspe by 18 seconds to get 1:25.
  • Thomas Berfendorff improved his nightmare 100% of The Disturbed by 19 seconds to get 1:35. This is another nice Quake level...
  • Arturo Garcia Lasca (aka Ken) has improved Marlo's nightmare 100% of Teleporters (dma1) by one second to get 0:28.
  • Markus Taipale has acheived the unthinkable and managed a time of 0:04 for the easy run of jzblue_3, one second faster.... wait a minute, I figured this was possible when I first posted the levels... see, I was right :)

The longest demo ever!

I've been meaning to mention this for a while but kept forgetting. Back in January, Tim Doherty did a nightmare 100% marathon through all of Quake... He managed the incredible time of 3 hours, 6 minutes and 52 seconds. Well.... I suppose if you have a few hours to kill and are bored you could try to improve it!

Le run du semaine - 7:40 PM

First up, Attila's RotW3 entry is available. Next up, just to clarify a point I thought was obvious about contest #4, but which is apparently not. You have to run the contest on the skarena.bsp provided. Not DM2, E1M3 or any other level =)

Tuesday, April 18th by Will

rotw3 insanity - 2:20 AM

Oh will the stress never end? This is the first time I've managed to get into PQ since Friday. I've got Ilkka's long awaited demo, but my email deleted Attila's. Attila, do not take this personally! If you send it in I will put it up, though I'll understand if you can't be bothered. Oh well, life goes on....

Monday, April 17th by Nolan

e3m6 insanity - 9:45 AM

Oh will the improvements never end! (hey I'm not complaining) It's Daniel's pturn again and he sent in 2:20, which is eight seconds faster. If you think that's amazing then wait until I tell you that three hours later in sent in a 2:15!!! Oh and don't think it still can't be improved.... I believe it's Thomas' turn now :)

In other news, I have filled another hole in the Rogue tables, doing an easy 100% of r2m2 in 1:46.

Sunday, April 16th by Nolan

Quite a variety - 10:00 PM

What is an update anymore without an improvment to the easy 100% of e3m6? Thomas has improved Daniel's most recent demo by four more seconds to get 2:28!

There's two 'new' demos on tspe:

  • Optic did a nightmare run in 0:27.
  • Optic also did a nightmare 100% in 1:43, four seconds faster than Stefan. What's strange is that he did this demo 10 months ago... I dont know why considering the level was just added a few weeks ago. He must have been bored or something.
Optic also improved Matthias' nightmare run of From out of Nowhere by 18 seconds to get 1:27. I recommend you get this level if you're never seen it.

Robert Axelsson has taken over hipend:

  • He improved Lauri's easy run by one second to get 0:18.
  • He improved my nightmare run by one second as well, getting 0:38.
  • He and Rickard did a coop nightmare run in 0:23, the first coop on this level.
And finally there are two self-improvments from Markus:
  • He improved his easy 100% of e2m2 by two seconds and got 1:00.
  • He did the nightmare run of e4m6 one second faster and got 0:47.

Selecta! - 6:00 AM

I does not know what to say. The results are up. Chaos reigns. They would have been up earlier but I has been watching Ali G and sort of lost track of time. Bo! And let us speak no more of RotW3. Respec!

Friday, April 14th (3rd update) by Will

Can I say 'fuck!' in an update? - 5:00 PM

Yup, you've guessed it. My email account went over the limit and I lost all the RotW demos you sent in, again. I'll still try and do the results on time, but if I haven't received your demo again by that time (going on who sent them in today), I'll put you in the results, but you'll have to wait until that person sends the demo in to get it. Sorry again, I hate it as much as you do. Send.

Friday, April 14th (2nd update) by Nolan

Big Improvements - 6:03 AM

This update contains demos that could be considered big improvements from the previous demos... as well as few new entries:
  • Stefan did both 100%s for tspe. He got 1:19 on easy and 1:47 on nightmare.
  • Thomas Bergendorff sent in a 0:40 for the nightmare 100% of jzblue_1 to improve Stefan by two seconds, but Robert Axelsson sent in a 0:35! Seven seconds faster than Stefan... big improvement?
  • The war on e3m6 continues as Daniel has sent in a 2:32, which is seven seconds faster than Thomas' last demo and a total of 20 seconds faster than the time was a little over a week ago. Big improvement?
  • I have done my first marathon demo... I did easy 100% through Rogue episode 2. Tim Doherty had done it previously in a time of 40:40, but I got a time of 28:44, which is 11 minutes and 56 seconds faster. How's that for a big improvment!

Friday, April 14th by Will

Aaarrgh - 1:30 AM

Just got back to University. Haven't been able to get at my email all week because NTMail isn't letting me in. Anyway, because of this, I've only managed to receive one RotW entry. So please resend your demo (I can get them at Ajare@PQ now). Sorry about this, it's been a real pain for me, too. Ilkka, yours is the demo I got, so you don't need to resend. I'll be doing the results at the normal time though, which will be 8PM CET so try to get them to me before then. I'm no longer on ICQ, btw.

Two years of SDA! - 7:10 AM

April 12th 1998 was when SDA officially opened here on planetquake... And to celebrate the occaision, we have some demos! Hmm, that's nothing out of the ordinary is it? At least not anymore, there for a while it unfortunatly was, as sda was down for a while and we had some rather slow points before that too. But we seem to be back pretty strong as we're getting about five demos sent in per day! Keep it up :)

There are of course demos from Blue hell...

  • Marlo did the two easy marathons! He got 0:48 for the run and 1:19 for the 100%.
  • Stefan has filled the last single level hole, getting 0:42 for the nightmare run of jzblue_1.
  • Peter and his brother did two eay run coop demos... they got 0:09 on jzblue_2 and 0:05 for jzblue_4, which includes a never before seen (?) trick.
Thomas Stubgaard keeps improving the id 100% demos:
  • He improved his nightmare 100% of e3m4 by one more second to get 1:31.
  • He added to the fight over easy 100% of e3m6 by improving Daniel's recent time by one second to get 2:39.
Jozsef Szalontai has improved Optic's nightmare 100% of Earthworld by 23 seconds to get 1:47.

I was trying to add a new table feature worked on by Matthias and Stefan but in the process I broke the tables and dont know why..... No mkt.pl pages are currently working... hopefully it will be fixed soon.

7:40 AM Update: Hey I got it working again.... not sure how though :) Anyway the new features are avaiable on the main mkt.pl page at the bottom, there are pages that compare all the players to each other. For example you can see that the six player's with the most records are Optic with 238, Ilkka with 163, then Marlo, Fabian, Matthias and me. There are also pages to sum up demo stats and map stats... you can also see that I hold 21 out of the 25 oldest records :) Thanks to Matthias for the idea.

Invasion of Marlo - 6:00 AM

Marlo Galinski has taken over the Blue Hell tables... he now has eight records! Before going farther, here is a zip that contains all the current records on jzblue.
  • jzblue_1: Marlo got 0:12 for the easy run, a one second improvment; 0:20 for the easy 100%, another one second improvment; and 0:14 for the nightmare run (yep, it's one second better). Still no nightmare 100% on this level...
  • jzblue_2: First, I must apologize to Robert Axelsson for forgetting his 0:12 for an easy run on this level..... but Marlo managed an 0:11... He also improved Kimmo's easy 100% by two seconds to get 0:17, and Robert's nightmare run by one second to get 0:12.
  • jzblue_3: Marlo improved the easy 100% by three seconds to get 0:19 and the nightmare 100% by three seconds as well to get 0:38
Daniel Magnusson has taken back his record of e3m6 easy 100% by improving Thomas' record by seven seconds to get 2:40

Hey I finally got one of my demos up to par! I have improved my easy run of r2m1 by an amazing 50 seconds! The new time is 2:14.

Monday, April 10th by Nolan

Even more Blue demos - 3:15 AM

Even more demos on Blue Hell for this update:
  • jzblue_1: Kimmo sent in a 0:14 for the easy run, but then Robert got a 0:13, a total of two seconds better. Robert also improved the easy 100% by four seconds and got 0:21.
  • jzblue_2: Justin sent in 0:14 for the easy run, but then Kimmo got a 0:13, a total of two seconds better (not to be confused with jzblue_1). Kimmo also got 0:19 for the easy 100% and 0:31 for the nightmare 100%.
  • jzblue_3: Robert did the easy 100% in 0:22.
  • jzblue_4: Robert got 0:16 for the nightmare 100% (should have been mentioned last time).
Ravage improved Optic's easy run of tspe by one more second to get 0:25.

Markus Taipale filled the hole in mcomplex, he did the nightmare run in 0:50. (the time for easy run is 0:43 by him).

Misplaced demos

Piguminati sent me two improvements to The Ruiner's Revulsion back on the 22nd but I forgot to post them... apologies to him. He improved Mr Shambler's easy run by four seconds to get 0:22 and Mr Shambler's nightmare run by five seconds to get 0:22 there as well.

Still no demos from me :(

Sunday, April 9th by Nolan

Lots of Blue demos - 7:48 AM

As I expected we got a bunch of demos for Blue Hell, but it seems as though the runners were communicating with each other because there weren't many duplicate entries and the ones that were, were faster than anything previously sent in... Nobody did any marathons through it though, hint hint. To make it easier for everybody, I put a zip with all current records on jzblue here, but I will go over things one map at a time:
  • jzblue_1: New player Justin Redmond got 0:15 for the easy run, a one second improvment, and 0:25 for the easy 100%. Robert Axelsson got 0:15 for the nightmare run.
  • jzblue_2: Justin Redmond got 0:15 for the easy run (one second improvement), but Robert Axelesson was faster on his nightmare run, getting 0:13.
  • jzblue_3: Kimmo Polvivaara improved Mr Shambler's easy run by one second to get 0:05. I think 4 seconds should be possible with mad bunnying... who wants to prove me right? Robert Axelsson got 0:05 for the nightmare run and 0:41 for the nightmare 100%.
  • jzblue_4: We received a 12 and 11 before Piguminati sent in a 0:10 for the easy run (three seconds faster than Mr shambler). Robert Axelsson got 0:14 for the easy 100% and 0:10 for the nightmare run.
Non-blue demos

The only submission for the new level, The Griding of Teeth, were improvements to Mr Shambler's easy run. First we got a 29, then a 28, but Optic got the fastest at 0:26. (five seconds faster)

Optic also improved both runs of r2m5, he got 1:21, six seconds faster, and 1:32, 15 seconds faster.

Marlo improved Optic's recent easy 100% of The Soul Grinder by ten seconds to get 2:15.

Peter and his brother did another coop run, this time improving Ilkka and Juho-Jussi's easy run of e2m5 by one second to get 0:22.

There ought to be about 4 demos from me for this update but I keep screwing things up and I haven't got them to my satisfaction yet.... it's very annoying. Hopefully it will be worth it....

Run of the Week shenanigans - 7:05 PM

Run of the Week results are up, as is the new contest. That is all....Over and out.

Friday, April 7th by Nolan

New Levels! - 6:10 AM

Yes it's true, we're finally adding a few more levels here at SDA. But they all actually already have demos because "Smabler" did some easy runs for some of them, but they should be improvable. The new maps are:
  • The Grinding of Teeth by Rudolf Kremers. Mr Shambler did an easy run in 0:31 back in December on his site.
  • The Mining Complex by Ilkka. He made this map for a contest at mineral's back in November. The wining demos from that contest have been added to the tables, find them here.
  • Blue Hell by Jason Zukowski. This is a set of four small levels... Mr shambler had easy runs of them all but everything else is wide open for them. You can also record a marathon through the episode, but please read the sda_notice file in the zip first!

Shut Up and Dance - 11:40 PM

What is the world coming to? A big record comes on, and what does everyone do? Jump up and down and scream. Depressing isn't it. Dance, people! Stop acting like tranced-up gibbons! Anyway, this update is 40 minutes late thanks to PQ FTP, and I'm not a happy bunny(hop). Oh well....

Thomas Stubgaard improves Daniel Magnusson's easy 100% of E3M6 by 5 seconds to get 2:47.
Optic fills up the tables with a nightmare run of Scoop in 1:44.

Smabler (as I'm told he likes to be known), of TEAMSmabler did a great run of Pingu's latest, A3. So give it a look. Hopefully there will be a level-related surprise for you lot later on tonight.

Run of the Week #2

I'm sure you're all aware it's over. Results and contest #3 up tomorrow.

Shut Up and Drive - 5:45 AM

Justin Fleck reminds us of his old speed running days by sending in yet another custom run. This time he fills the Nightmare run of Village with a time of 2:16.

Obviously the speed running genes are in Peter's family! His 14-year old brother Mortel (and Peter) pimped up Ilkka & Juho's E4M5 Easy coop by 1 second to get 0:11. What's next? Peter's grandma Glatis?

Also, if you haven't picked up Soldier of Fortune yet I highly recommend you do so! It's not exactly Half-Life when it comes to the story line, but the action is incredible!

Tuesday, April 4th by Nolan

Table filling continues - 7:40 PM

Five table filling demos in this update, they're still worth checking out, along with the improvements.

Optic made the following:

Ilkka filled up two more holes in the zer tables and improved one. BTW if any of you people have not checked out Zerstörer, you really should :) And then check out these demos as Ilkka told me to "p1mp them good :)".
  • Easy run of zer3 in 2:19, 27 seconds faster than Mattias' previous record.
  • Easy 100% of zer5 in 3:40.
  • Nightmare 100% of zer5 in 3:55.
Robert Axelsson has once again improved the nightmare run of e2m5. This time by two seconds to get 0:39. I never thought this level would be done this fast on nightmare since it sat with my old 1:00 as the record forever.

New levels are getting closer to reality.... I've decided what the first few will be at least. BTW those of us who update SDA have agreed to use Central European time for our time stamps as previously we'd been using our own timezone but then I could do an update 4 hours after Will and it looks like it came before... see April 1st :)

Dissolution over eternal holes in the tables - 7:45 PM

There are some holes in the DoE tables that have been there for quite a while, but I decided to try to fill some of them. So far I've only done a nightmare run of r2m6 in 3:16 (easy run time is 2:36 by me).

Notice: If you downloaded the recently posted update to DoEstats you need to download again as it had a bug related to one of it's bugfixes... So get it again. The old file might still be on mirrors so make sure what you get says v1.61 when you exit a level.

Thomas sent in another new nightmare 100% demo: he improved his recent e3m4 demo by another six seconds and got 1:32.

Saturday, April 1st by Will

Demos as far as the eye can see - 8:30 PM

After the rash of updates about RotW, it's nice to have a good, chunky demo-filled update, wouldn't you say?
We kick off with some id maps:

Peter Horvath does a nice demo: easy 100% of E1M4 in 01:04 updated 01/04. Nine seconds faster than Robert's recent demo.
Mr Axelsson has not been idle either, reclaiming his nightmare run of E2M5 from Ingmar with a 0:41 demo.
Finally, Attila and Peter improve Gunnar and Nolan's old E1M8 coop run by 4 seconds to get 0:26.

Optical Assault

The hardworking Mr. Fleck does the custom rounds:

  • Nighmare 100% of Retinal Tear in 2:38 - filling the tables.
  • Nighmare 100% of Colony in 1:42 - filling the tables.
  • Nighmare run of Gordian in 2:21 - filling the tables.

And if you haven't done already, check out RotW #2.

Missing Demo - 8:09 PM

Not like anybody cares because Markus owned us all (he's a very shy guy if you ask me, talk to us Markus) but I sent a corrected dm3_123 on the 29th and I guess Will thought it was the same demo. Congrats to everyone on the first rotw!

Friday, March 31 (2nd update) by Will

Run of the Week results up - 6:00 PM

Phew. The RotW results are up, as is the new contest. I'm too tired to write anything else. Check it out.

All Mineral update - 10:00 AM

I've been quiet for nearly a month now, as I've had my final exams. But since all the exams are finally done, I should have more time to spend updating SDA from now on. I thought it would be a good start to post all my demos :) These are the single-level demos that I've done lately:
  • Easy run of Hip1m4 in 0:54 - yet two seconds faster than my previous demo. Thanks to Attila for the new exit-trick!
  • Easy 100% of Endtime in 1:05 - claimed the record back from Marlo, three seconds faster.
  • Nightmare run of Zer1m3 in 2:29 - new to the tables. This is 17 secs faster than the current easy record though :)
Then I've also recorded two marathons: (NOTE! The Marathons are not updated yet, please try again tomorrow)
  • Easy run of Hipnotic episode 1 in 2:42 - nine seconds faster than my previous record, only 6 seconds slower than SdSlite!
  • Easy 100% of ID episode 1 in 7:49 - 73(!) seconds faster than my previous record, 42 seconds slower than Qd100Qlite.
Not "All Mineral update" after all...

Nolan sent me a demo in which he runs through the masses on monsters in e3m7. Nolan says e3m7 to be the hardest ID level. His new nightmare run through e3m7 in 1:10 is 61(!) seconds faster than his ancient 486/keyboard demo. Make sure you check it out...

Various stuff

Some other 'news' and stuff to mention:

  • Stefan and Nolan have worked out a new feature in the player's tables. Your player's page can now be sorted by mapname/time/date instead of type.
  • DoeStats & RDEStats have been updated by Stefan. Nolan has also updated ZerStats to v1.61. The new stats can be downloaded from the QdQ's stats page.
  • Finally, remember to check back here later tonight - Will should post the results of the ROTW contest soon.

Run of the Week deadline - 10:10 PM

Has expired, as I hope you know. So no more demos, please. Results will be up tomorrow in the afternoon some time.

Faster Faster - 8:25 PM

Three demos, two by Nolan on the curiously named 4fiffy3:
  • Easy 100% in 2:38, filling the tables.
  • Nightmare 100% in 2:53, new as well.
And Ingmar does a great run on an id map:
  • Nighmare run of E2M5 in 0:42, getting very lucky at the end =)
Run of the Week

Thanks for the great demos, keep them coming! There are a few surprises already....

More demos from Matthias and Thomas - 7:35 PM

Matthias continues to do his usuall filling of the holes in the custom level tables, this time completely taking over badland2:
  • Easy run of badland2 in 2:40, nine seconds faster than Optic.
  • Nightmare run in 2:51.
  • Easy 100% in 3:08.
  • Nightmare 100% in 3:35.
  • He also did an easy 100% of coopmine in 2:31.
Thomas continues to do his usual as well...improving 100%s on the id levels:
  • Easy 100% of e3m4 in 1:20, five seconds faster than Optic.
  • Nightmare 100% of e3m4 in 1:38, ten seconds faster than my old demo.
  • Easy 100% of e4m3 in 1:30, four seconds faster than his last demo

An update with demos... - 1:35 AM

Matthias Belz sent in a few demos that we missed from the defunct sda-incoming directory...
  • FAB improved both 100%s of con1 by two seconds each to get 0:20 on both easy and nightmare.
  • Markus improved his nightmare run of e4m7 by two seconds to get 0:55.
And now for recently sent in demos :)
  • Robert Axelsson improved Peter's easy 100% of e1m4 by three seconds and got 1:13.
  • He also improved Kimmo's nightmare run of rd1m2 by one second and got 0:57.
  • Optic improved Matthias' nightmare run of edom by seven seconds (which was just posetd a few days ago) to get 1:26.
  • I filled some more holes in the Zerstorer tables, this time doing 100%s:
Easy 100% of z6 in 2:55, definitely the best of my three demos.
    Nightmare 100% of z6 in 3:18.
    Easy 100% of z7 in 6:52.
BTW for anybody else who does Zerstorer, I posted a new version of Zerstats (v1.61) on the QdQstats page because I found a few small bugs and fixed them.

Anthony Bailey interview - 00:58 AM

In their interesting series of interviews, Machinima.com have posted a conversation with Anthony Bailey, the 'main man' behind the Quake done Quick team.

Those of you that have spoken to Anthony before won't be surprised that the interview isn't a light-hearted chat about how cool quad-grenadejumps are :)

It's a very interesting read, as it provides us with a deeper understanding of what keeps Anthony so thrilled by QdQ and other Machinima-related matters. Here's a snippet about where he gets his inspiration from:
In life, as with anyone, various strands weave together. I've always had a hacker's soul, and open source seems obvious. Manning telephones for a counselling service opened my eyes to how much people need people. Daniel Dennett's writing has crystallised many of my background thoughts on complexity and intelligence, and Simon Reynolds music writing did something similar in encouraging me to intellectualise about things that move me beyond the point where thinking is important. I like the way that communication technologies like the Net help show that whilst people en masse are dullards, every individual can be brilliant. Abstract mathematics is the highest aesthetics. And thinking hard and carefully is a moral duty because it is of the most help in making myself and the world happier.
Now go check out the whole thing @ Machinima.com.

Run of the Week update - 9:47 PM

Thanks for the entries I've already received, guys, I'm impressed. However, I forgot something important. You're not allowed to die. Although this is probably common-sense, I just thought I'd make it explicit. Thanks.

Run of the Week - 7:00 PM

Well, it's here at last. Go check out it. This should be a weekly fixture from now on, assuming all goes well. So give it a go.

New custom levels

Not content with a new weekly contest, we're also about to give you a whole new set of custom levels to run on! Be happy, be very happy.

Matthias belts back - 2:00 AM

Matthias obviously does not value sleep as much as most of us =)
  • Nightmare 100% of Azurette in 6:44, new to the tables.
  • Nightmare 100% of Comm Center in 3:27, new to the tables.
  • Nightmare 100% of Evildead in 3:03, new to the tables as well.
  • Nightmare run of Edom in 1:33, a good 23 seconds faster than Justin.

Justin weighs in with two runs:

  • Easy run of Climb in 0:33, 2 seconds quicker than his recent run.
  • Nightmare run of Climb in 0:32, 7 seconds quicker and a second quicker than easy!

Run of the Week...

...may be making a comeback. It wasn't totally successful last time, but we're trying to make it more fun this time around. Take part or die! Ahem.

And finally...

Speedrunning tune of the week definately has to be "Jump 'n' run" by Clemen Neufeld - or is that Ilkka Kurkela? =). Go seek it out!

The lost demo is found! - 6:30 PM

Hey it turns out that Matthias Belz had a copy of my ancient e2m1 nightmare 100% in 2:35... and it was older than I thought, it's dated 14.12.96. Download it for a few laughs :) It seems ungodly slow compared to any current demo.

In other news, Robert Axelsson was not satisfied with his easy 100% of e3m3. He improved it by one more second to get 0:56, but then improved it by two more to get 0:54.

Wednesday, March 22nd by Will

Purple monkey dishwasher - 5:45 PM

Well, you can only come up with so many titles involving the words 'demos' and 'speedrun' before it gets repetitive, eh? =)
Some good demos coming up, so hold onto your proverbial head garments.

id level demos

Robert Axelsson has churned out a couple of good demos for us:

  • Nightmare run of E2M5 in 0:49, 4 seconds faster than Thomas Stubgaard, and equals the ancient QdQr time.
  • Easy 100% of E3M3 in 0:57, 3 seconds faster than Evan's ancient (1998) demo.

Darknite assault

Matthias Belz has his recent Darknite runs savaged by Justin and Marlo:

  • Easy 100% of Darknite in 1:51 by Marlo, 23 seconds faster.
  • Easy run of Darknite in 1:29 by Justin, 11 seconds faster.
  • Nightmare run of Darknite in 1:33 by Marlo, 32 seconds faster.

I'm sure Matthias will exact swift retribution on these two interlopers =)

Finally, Optic improves two of his old demos:

  • Easy run of Climb in 0:35 3 seconds faster than before.
  • Nightmare run of Earthworld in 1:05 a 15 second 'Verbesserung'.

Till the next update, some time, same place, folks.

UT Speedrun - 11:36 AM

Thankfully not everyone is as short-sighted as most people in the speedrunning community, and sticking to Quake 1 as if their life depended on it (that would go for erm... me too I guess). The exception is Shambler, who has once again found himself another game to show his skills in; this time it's UT's turn to be sped trough. Obviously it's not just kill-the-bot-as-fast-as-you-can, but proper SP missions Done Quick.

On the subject of TEAMShambler FPSD&D, I found the 'irc battles' between mappers Vondur and Excessus very amusing, have a look (one of them even has a reference to QdQ in it :)

Monday, March 20th by Nolan

Complete update - 1:40 AM

2:08 AM update: you can get all 15 demos from this update here.

Well this update should include every new demo, even the custom ones... Since nobody else wanted to/had time to do them I actually downloaded the appropriate levels and checked them out myself.

Lots of table fillin'

Most of the new demos are filling holes in the tables but there are a few improvments as well.

Matthias Belz sent in a total of 8 custom demos:

  • Easy run of darknite in 1:40, 10 seconds faster than Optic (A 1:47 was sent in the interim by Cid Soderqvist). Definitely not a pretty quake level, but it's good for speed running...
  • Nightmare run of darknite in 2:05.
  • Easy 100% of darknite in 2:14.
  • Nightmare 100% of darknite in 3:00.
  • Easy 100% of hellbase in 2:16.
  • Nightmare 100% of hellbase in 2:13.
  • Easy 100% of thetomb in 2:57.
  • Nightmare 100% of thetomb in 2:53.
Four new demos from Optic, one is a marathon:
  • Easy run of Liquid Despair in 0:44, two seconds better than the previous record.
  • Nightmare run of Liquid Despair in 0:56, a seven second improvement.
  • Easy 100% of Retinal Tear in 2:14.
  • Nightmare marathon run of ep2 in 6:42.
Markus Taipale also did a nightmare marathon run. He did ep4 in 3:53. Only the nightmare run through ep3 is still blank of the marathon runs on the original levels...

Peter Horvath improves his nightmare 100% of e1m6 by three seconds to get 0:53, very impressive demo, IMO. Also the same time as the easy 100%.

Finally, I improved my easy run of zer7 by 41 seconds to get 2:49. (Now 11 seconds faster than the nightmare run).

That should be all the demos.... if anything was missed let me know.

In search of a lost demo

I've been trying to find a copy of my very first quake speed demo.... a nightmare 100% of e2m1 in 2:35 (current time is 1:33), but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. It was deleted from the original cdrom demos directory before SDA started... but I'm wondering if anybody might still have it sitting on their hard drive after more than three years. If so then please send it to me :)

Quick update - 2:20 PM

Quick update to post a few more demos that have come in... still not all of them though.

Optic filled a few holes in the 100% table for PSE:

  • Pse1 nightmare 100% in 3:22.
  • Pse2 nightmare 100% in 3:30. He actually sent in a 4:40 the day before...
Martin Selinus improved his easy 100% of e3m2 by another second to get 0:59.

After Thomas Stubgaard improved the nightmare 100% of e4m3, he improved the easy 100% of it as well. The record for this demo was always held by DooMfienD. He only improved it by one second though :) Got 1:34.

Robert Axelsson and Alexander Lindgren did another coop demo: easy 100% of e1m3 in 0:55, seven seconds faster than the previous record.

Monday, March 13th by Nolan

New demos finally avaialable - 10:00 PM

Just a note that if you've been wondering why you can't get any of the demos from my last update, it was because cdrom mirroring was down and it seems GSN didn't know it until I told them... but they got it fixed and all the recent demos are now on cdrom at least...

Sunday, March 12th by Nolan

Another normal update - 1:30 PM

Ilkka is turning into a slacker and doesn't want to update the custom demos... actually he's gotten busy with exams so I hope somebody else will update them. But in the mean time we have more "normal" demos for you...

Marlo improved Optic's easy 100% of e3m1 by one second to get 1:15.

Robert Axelson apparantly likes e1m2 on nightmare:

  • He improved Alexiander Osipov's nightmare 100% by three seconds to get 1:12.
  • He also improved his nightmare 100% coop with Alexander Lindgren by six seconds to end up with 1:06.
After he missed getting the best time for the easy run of e3m2, Martin Selinus decided to try the easy 100%. He ended up improving Optic's demo by three seconds to get 1:00.

Thomas did me a favor and improved one of my old keyboard 100% demos, e4m3. He got 4:08, a 17 second improvement.

More demos from me!

Woo, more demos from me :)

  • I improved my nightmare run of h3m2 by 19 seconds to get 1:45.
  • I did a nightmare run of zer5 in 3:06, new. (Time for easy run is 1:28 by Mr. Shambler)
  • I also did a nightmare run of zer7 in 3:00, new. The time for my easy run on this level is currently 3:30.... I think that could use some improvement.
That's all for now, I suppose if nobody else wants to update custom demos, I'll have to do it to keep everyone happy ....

Thursday, March 9th by Nolan

A few good demos - 2:35 AM

A total of five demos for this update. They all have their reason to be watched, weather its l33t skillz or humor value... There are custom level demos that have been sent in, but I leave those to Ilkka :)

Markus does two demos:

  • He improved Kimmo's easy run of e3m4 by one second to get 0:37.
  • He improved Shine's already amazing easy marathon through episode one by eight seconds to get 2:36. Here's some of those l33t skillz.
Marlo decided to fill a hole in the marathon table. He did a nightmare 100% of all of episode 4 in 26:36. Here's some of the humor value.... btw marlo promises a better demo soon.

Robbert Alexsson & Alexander Lindgren did a coop nightmare 100% of e1m2, new to the tables, in 1:12, which is three seconds faster than the single player record.

I improved another of my ancient keyboard hipnotic demos. This time I went for h1m3. I knew it would be difficult but it turned out to be quite a nightmare. The end result was a 36 second improvement! The old time was 2:51 and the new time is 2:15. There's more of those l33t skillz in here :)

RDE site updated - 12:32 PM

Party time, a new shipment of RDE demos is up at the Runner's Delight page! This time, there's more speed involved than ever, with exceptionally nice demos, including the first 'Easy-run-of-all-of-RDE'-marathon. Head over there, and remember to keep those demos coming.

Sunday, March 5 by Nolan

Another 100% from me - 2:45 AM

Just a quick update to post my newest demo. I improved my nightmare 100% of h1m4 by 25 seconds to get 2:15. Only 24 more keyboard demos left to improve....

Saturday, March 4 by Evan

A Run Unlike Any Other - 6:32 PM

Custom & Original Level Improvements:

Marlo Galinski is up to his usual gassyness.

  • Endtime Easy 100% in 1:08 1 second faster than Ilkka.
  • Fire Easy 100% in 1:16 11 seconds faster than Matthias
Justin Fleck improved Marlo's Easy run of Earthworld by 1 second to get 0:59.

Attila Csernyik reclaims his Nightmare E3M2 run from Martin by 1 second to get 0:18.

Cooperative Improvement:

Cameron and I optimize like we've never before!

  • Easy 100% of Mexx9a in a blisteringly fast 23:25. Now the longest demo time ever, beat that Nolan.
I've added the old news page. This page will only hold about 20 updates (so it doesn't exceed notepad size) so save the updates that fit your fancy before they're removed.

Also, please send all marathon runs to Jesse. The rest of the team doesn't have patience (or the connection) to receive 9 meg demos. Thanks, it's only common sense we're asking some of you to use.

Quick Optic update - 10:00 PM

Just a small update to keep things rolling, and so that I can try out the new updating system. Optic does two demos:

  • Easy run of Earthworld in 1:02 - two seconds faster than Joszef.
  • Easy 100% of Colony in 1:34 - new to the tables.

Hopefully no problems there. More news on new custom levels coming soon!

Wednesday, March 1 by Ilkka

All sorts of demos - 10:00 PM

Another update, this time with quite a lot of demos - 16 in total. Some of them are really cool, so make sure you don't miss them!

Classic ID Singleplayer demos

Alright, I'll start with two ID records that I've recorded a couple of days ago:

  • Easy 100% of E1M5 in 0:55 - two seconds faster than Optic, and also two seconds faster than Qd100Ql. Lots of action here with Quadded-RJs.
  • Easy 100% of E4M4 in 2:04 - 10 seconds faster than Thomas Stubgaard's newish demo. Six seconds faster than Qd100Ql.

Custom map Singleplayer demos

Alexander has done a new custom map demo:

  • Easy 100% of Compugib in 0:37 - two seconds faster than Optic.
Justin 'in the running m00d' Fleck has improved a custom level record also:
  • Easy 100% of The Dwell in 1:26 - 11 seconds faster than Marlo. We're talking about Optic of course :)
Jozsef Szalontai has improved a custom demo:
  • Easy run of Earthworld in 1:04 - 15 seconds faster than Optic.

Two ID Marathons

Shine shows his skillz again:

  • Nightmare run of Episode 1 in 3:50 - 41(!) seconds faster than Peter. It's not too often when Peter's record gets beaten by 41 seconds...
Ravage proves his marathon running skillz too:
  • Easy run of Episode 2 in 4:03 - one second faster than Shine's newish record.

Custom level Cooperative action by Johan & Carl

We've got nine co-op tablefillers from Johan Nilsson and Carl Tholin. Here they go:

  • Nightmare 100% of Beach (everyone's favorite map) in 0:23 - new.
  • Easy 100% of Beach in 0:25 - new.
  • Easy run of Bub2 in 0:13 - new.
  • Easy run of Colony in 0:31 - new.
  • Easy 100% of Colony in 1:18 - new.
  • Easy run of Guardhouse in 0:24 - new.
  • Easy run of Eye Socket in 0:56 - new.
  • Easy 100% of Eye Socket in 1:23 - new.
  • Easy run of Houstrps in 0:30 - new.
That's all for now. Speed Demos Archive is truly working again the way it should: we've posted total 72(!) new demos since the reopening (20th Feb)... The action is really good now, keep it up and get running!

Tuesday, February 29 (3nd update) by Nolan

A few notices - 5:50 PM

Just a note about modified Quake exes. I think it's great that the source to Quake was released but for now I think it would be best if you only recorded demos with the original id exe files that you always used. I hope noone would make an exe that would allow them to cheat and use it, but other groups may change something in that game that would affect us. So for now please keep using the id exes to record. In the near future I may provide new exes that you could use for demo recording with select new features in it....

Mineral has posted the results to his latest contest. The competition was tight with one category being won by a mere hundredth of a second! Check out the results at Minerals.

Tuesday, February 29 (2nd update) by Evan

Kick ass GLQuake/Markus Madness - 2:32 AM

Before I post any demos I would like to mention The Unofficial GLQuake Project. With the release of Quake's source the author of this project has implemented bump mapping, torch flares, incredibly smoothed out models (fire the supernailgun!), OpenGL fog, and much more. It is a work in progress (and please don't speed run using it) but well worth a look, now for the demos. By the way, the FOV command now works perfectly.

Markus Taipale continues to amaze me (and make me wonder just what the f**k he's smoking).

  • He improved Yonatan's prized Easy run of E1M5 by 1 second to get 0:17.
  • He improved Ilkka's Nightmare run of E1M7 by 4 seconds to get 0:29.
  • And he improved his Nightmare run of E4M4 by 1 second to get 0:22.
Justin Fleck claims to be "in the running m00d" and it shows with his latest foray into custom table fillings.

Attila Csernyik & Peter Horvath are still running!

  • Easy coop run of E3M5 in 0:35 improving Ravage and Shine's demo by 1 second.

Finally, our good friend Marlo Galinski has done 2 new marathons.

  • Easy run of Episode 3 in 3:20 improving his previous time by 2 seconds.
  • Easy 100% of Episode 4 in 15:18.

Well SDA is going strong again! Good proof of that is, well, Nolan's updating (something must be going right). There has been some talk about adding a new custom map every week (during that duration it will be good competition) so keep checking back!

Tuesday, February 29 by Nolan

New marathons from Optic - 1:05 AM

Optic made two new marathon demos recently:
  • He improved his Nightmare 100% of episode 3 by 2:16 to get 14:44.
  • He ran through all of Quake on Nightmare and got a time of 26:25.
Since nobody had yet made marathon runs through episodes 2, 3 or 4 on nightmare skill, Optic's run through the whole game could be broken up to be the records for those as well.... but I don't feel like doing that right now :) It would be nice if someone recorded them individually though...

More demos tomorrow!

Sunday, February 27 (3rd update) by Evan

Jozsef wants a piece - 2:22 PM

My oldest and most prized demo was improved by a few bunnies so I found a new jump to improve Jozsef's E2M6 by 2 seconds.
  • Easy run of E2M6 in 1:16 - My first demo in quite some time so I said hi to everyone :)
There have been two updates today so I doubt there are any other demos. I'm still receiving my mail (I'm on 28.8) so if there are, I will update again.

Sunday, February 27 (2nd update) by Ilkka

Mexx6 100% - starring Alexander & Marlo - 7:40 PM

Back when the sdaincoming was launched a couple of months ago, there was an interesting "Mexx6 100% contest" between Alexander and Marlo. It all started when Alexander beat Marlo's 2:43 by 10 seconds on easy skill. The following times were these:
  • Marlo 2:29; Alexander 2:26; Marlo 2:25; Alexander 2:22; Marlo 2:18 and finally, Alexander 2:14 - the quality is quite good I'd say...
  • The two had a smaller "contest" on Nightmare skill too. The times: Alexander 2:48; Marlo 2:43; Alexander 2:39 - Marlo, have you already given up? :)
Another demo that we've forgot to mention is Shine's marathon in E2:
  • Easy run of Episode 2 in 4:04 - 25(!) seconds faster than Kimmo.
As you see, this was a really short update. We'll be back soon with a couple of ID records and some custom map coops!

(Fileplanet is still down, but you can d/l the demos e.g. from cdrom.com or from Sunet.)

Sunday, February 27 by Nolan

Five new demos - 2:05 AM

I got the demo that I mentioned in my last update good enough so here it is:
  • Nightmare 100% of Hip1M1 in 1:43 - 19 seconds faster than my July 97 keyboard demo.
Expect more demos from me, I can't say how many though...

Optic fills zer4

Optic decided to fill the three blanks in the tables for zer4. Are you going to fill the whole zerstorer table Optic? I dare ya :)

  • Nightmare run of zer4 in 1:49.
  • Easy 100% of zer4 in 2:42.
  • Nightmare 100% of zer4 in 3:11.
  • He also through in a new Nightmare 100% of of pse3b in 1:44.
If there are any demos that people sent to sda during its downtime that haven't been mentioned in the news or added to the tables, please email us to let us now. Don't re-send the demos though unless it ends up that we don't have them.

Fileplanet woes

Fileplanet decided to blow up earlier tonight, it's been down for over an hour as I write this update. I can't say when it will work again since gamespy's status page isn't even acknowledging it being down. This shouldn't prevent you from getting the new demos from ftp.cdrom.com though.

Missing e4m8 demos - 2:30 AM

Hey I haven't updated this site in like 10 months I don't think, but since just about everyone else is way too busy to work on it (one of the reasons why it was down so long) I decided to start taking an active role in it again. Not much to this update except this notice and that I'm also going to try to record new demos myself. I've already improved one of my old keyboard demos but it's not good enough yet :)

Ilkka forgot Thomas's e4m8 demos on his last update, so here they are:

  • Easy 100% of e4m8 in 3:56 - 24 seconds faster than his previous record.
  • Nightmare 100% of e4m8 in 6:26 - 31 seconds faster than his previous record.
There are custom level demos that need updated as well but I dont know when they will get updated though.

Wednesday, February 23 by Ilkka

Speedruns - that's what this site is about - 11:01 PM

Phew, this is quite a long update: total 26 demos, of which five are marathons. It'll probably take a while before all the new records will be shown in the tables, hopefully soon. Anyway, onto the demos...

ExMx 100% -records in danger: Thomas alert

Thomas Stubgaard proves his skills by doing a massive amount of new records for ID levels. He has improved the old ID 100%s with an incredible pace:

  • Nightmare 100% of E2M4 in 2:40 - seven seconds faster than his previous record.
  • Easy 100% of E2M6 in 4:26 - five seconds faster than his previous record. (oh btw, I made a mistake on my last update. Thomas' demo e2m6_431 was recorded on easy skill, not nightmare)
  • Easy 100% of E4M4 in 2:14 - two seconds faster than Optic's demo.
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M4 in 3:28 - 29(!) seconds faster than Nolan's demo.
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M5 in 2:37 - 51(!) seconds faster than Nolan's '97 demo . Plenty of quads here :)
  • Easy 100% of E4M6 in 2:00 - nine seconds faster than Nolan's demo.
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M6 in 3:20 - 42(!) seconds faster than Nolan's '97 demo. Thomas seems to be a bit irritated in the .txt: "If I just had cowboy-aim like Peter.......". Heh, I liked that part :)
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M7 in 3:48 - 64(!) seconds faster than Nolan's '97 demo. Nolan's demo was actually the most ancient demo. It's dated all the way back to 23.05.97 - that's over 2½ years!

Other single-level speedruns

Then to the other players. A newcomer, Jozsef Szalontai, has improved both runs of E2M6. Welcome to the team Joe :)

  • Easy run in 1:18 - three seconds faster Evan's ancient demo.
  • Nightmare run in 1:17 - 10 seconds faster than Optic's old demo, with a new trick!
Attila has produced three demos:
  • Nightmare run of E3M2 in 0:24 - another one second-improvement over his previous record. Ah, this trick really is a cool one!
  • Easy run of Doom2_04 in 0:25 - two seconds faster than Yonatan.
  • Easy run of Evilpool in 0:07 - one second faster than Optic.
Optic has recorded three demos as well:
  • Easy run of Mexx3 in 1:11 - one second faster than Carl.
  • Easy run of Colony in 0:31 - three seconds faster than Johan Nilsson.
  • Nightmare run of Colony in 0:31 - new.
Stefan fills the Dissolution tables with another two demos:
  • Nightmare run of R1M7 in 3:11 - new.
  • Nightmare run of R2M1 in 3:57 - new. (link is temporarily broken)
Tim Doherty improved his previous record in R2M4:
  • Easy 100% in 6:32 - 29 seconds faster than his previous record.
I've also improved a couple of my old records:
  • Easy run of Hip1m4 in 0:56 - one second faster than my previous record. Now there's a new trick here that you _must_ take a look at! :)
  • Easy 100% of Evilworld in 1:28 - 16 seconds faster than my previous record.

Last but not least: The Marathons

The most hardcore playing style, marathon running, is still in many players' interests, as a lot of those multi-level-recordings have been recorded during the last months. First of all, Shine improved Markus' (!) Episode 1 easy run by four seconds:

  • Easy run of Episode 1 in 2:44 - a four-second improvement. I like the way Shine plays E1M4 :)
Marlo has done a Marathon too:
  • Easy run of Episode 3 in 3:22 - three seconds faster than Peter. Most of the quality tricks included.
Tim Doherty seems to love the Dissolution levels. He has recorded...
  • ... Easy 100% of Roque Ep1 in 27:08 - some 8 minutes faster than his old one.
  • Easy 100% of Roque Ep2 in 40:40 - new.
Fabian visited Mattias in Sweden some months ago and they made a coop marathon:
  • Easy 100% of Episode 3 in 7:13 - new.
Finally, rumours say that someone has completed Quake on Nightmare skill killing all the monsters and getting all the secrets. Another rumour says that the same thing is completed on easy skill as well. We'll see if they're true...

What the heck is going on at this site? - 1:23 AM

As all these incomprehensible server problems seem to last forever, we've decided to switch to "manual updates" temporarily. You may start sending your demos to sda again (we won't use the sdaincoming system any longer). Stefan Schwoon has done a massive job: he has created the new tablescripts and fixed the tables to match the state-of-the-art records. All the records and demos can be downloaded here, thanks Stefan.

I tried to recover some demos from the sdaincoming dir and I'll upload the ones I have on my HD. As there were loads of other demos in the directory before it totally dissapeared, I can't upload them all. Therefore, please e-mail the demos that you can't see in this update and that you already uploaded to sdaincoming, thanks. Sorry for all the mess.

Finally, some demos

The demos in this update are mostly for ID levels, and some of them are even months late. Once again, sorry for the delays...

Fabian Kollakowski managed to improve Peter's record in E1M1:

  • Easy 100% in 0:54 - A two-second improvement. This demo is a result of lots of playing: Fabian said he got 0:55 relatively easy, but had to work hard for a 0:54. A must download!
Thomas Stubgaard has done lots of really impressive demos:
  • Nightmare 100% of E2M4 in 2:47 - 19 seconds faster than Nolan. This is also 10 seconds faster than the old Quake Done 100% Quick.
  • Nightmare 100% of E2M5 in 2:28 - Yet 13 seconds faster than his previous record. Thomas has improved this record for many times and I must say he has gotten pretty damn good in it. Twelve seconds faster than Qd100Q.
  • Easy 100% of E2M6 in 4:31 - 31(!) seconds faster than Will.
  • Easy 100% of E4M8 in 4:20 - 18 seconds faster than Nolan's old record.
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M8 in 6:57 - 163(!) seconds faster than Nolan's ancient record. Thomas managed to get 83/88 kills which is two more than Nolan did in his demo. Can anyone kill 'em all? :)
Markus Taipale improved his previous record in E2M5:
  • Easy run in 0:29 - A two-second improvement. Must be close to optimized...
That's all the demos for this update. More will be up soon now that things (hopefully) get rolling on again. Oh almost forgot, there's a new contest at my site Mineral's, go check it out. The deadline is 26th this month.
