Last Ever SDA Update! - 3:08 AM

Of 2001, that is. :-) Unless Stubby or Nolan or Jesse or Will or Evan or anyone else that still has the password decides to sneak in a last minute update just to make me look foolish. In fact, the more I think about it the more it sems like a very poor headline. Let's just move on and forget about it, shall we?

Before we start on the new map demos I think we should take a little look at Jozsef Szalontai's latest Id improvement. He has taken a second off of one of my favourite demos, Peter's Easy 100% of Castle of the Damned. Now, I'm all in favour of people showing off their skillz, but the bunny he does to the silver key is just outrageous, he seems to start it from half way across the room and damn near lands on the key ledge. Normally I would have given this 0:50 a Must Download but Joe says that he's sure he can do a 0:49...

Moving on to the new maps, we have received a whole pile of demos for the runs on dnspq1.

spring2 continues to get a lot of attention.

Still no demos on the jjspq levels but we have our first Easy 100% through hc courtesy of everybodies favourite little cuddle-bunny Ilkka Kurkela. If you believe his .txt file he actually did this 0:55 over two years ago but you know what Ilkka's like. He'll say anything to try and impress us. ;-)

Another map that seems to have gained populatity over the last few hours is prison.

Only one n3sp03 demo this time. Anders and his brother (ANOTHER SDA first timer) Per Nordensten have done the Easy Run in 1:28. (1:32) To be honest this map is not really suited to coop runs but for a first demo I suppose it's important to take it easy and not burn yourself out.

And before I go I would like to say a big fat thank-you on behalf of the SDA crew to everyone that has submitted a demo this year. Without you this would be a pretty pointless site. So thanks to (in "last demo submitted" order) Anders Nordensten, Jonny Andersson, Jozsef Szalontai, Basil de Vries, Kimmo Polvivaara, Thomas Bergendorff, Amrik Kochhar, Dan Stukanev, Arturo Garcia Lasca, Ilkka Kurkela, Aleksander Osipov, Marlo Galinski, Fern, Wim Loones, Rutger Baks, Valeriy Burmistrov, Carl Tholin, Daniel Hansson, Martin Selinus, Niklas Wikstrand, Jordi Ros, Hannu Kankaanpaa, Daniel Andersson, Robert Axelsson, David Hocking, Thomas Stubgaard, Timo Nieminen, Tim Doherty, Attila Csernyik, Peter Horvath, Nolan Pflug, Markus Taipale, Mads-Peter Stubgaard, Daniel Magnusson, Johan Nilsson, Stefan Schwoon, Daniel Lindberg,Will Marsh, Rickard Axelsson, Matt Claydon, Fredrik Eckers, Mark Ferrer, Ingmar Poerner, Shambler, Fredrik Lindblom, Mattias Öman, Andrey Stepanov, Andrey Tanarov, Carl-Johan Andersson, Justin Fleck, Robin Kuivinen, Filip Soderholm, Peter Abrahamsson, KimSvea, Martin Thorning, Damien, Evan Wagner, Juozas Rimas, Attila Molnar, Brad Gross, David Gunderson, Rebecca Axelsson, Ludvig Sjostrand, Sara Hansson, Cameron Engles, Mikael Woolfe, Sergi Cami, Simon Nordberg, Jesse van Dijk and Vlad Burmistrov, and also to everybody that's entered a demo in the Run Of The Whenever and made it such a success. And finally a big wet kiss to those that have just supported us by watching the demos. Let's keep up the good work and make 2002 an even better year. *sniff* I love you guys... *sniff*

Please, no more sp2_006 demos!! - 3:08 AM

Holy shit! I was going to leave the new map demos until tomorrow but I guess I'm going to have to do at least this one now...

Within a couple hours of posting the maps I got a beep on ICQ from Jonny Andersson asking "Am I the first to do a 0:06 on spring2?"
And indeed he beat (in the order they were received) Anders Nordensten, Hannu Kankaanpää, Thomas Bergendorff, Valeriy Burmistrov and Basil de Vries to get 0:06 for the Easy Run and 0:06. for the Nightmare Run. Fast work Jonny. :-)

And then just a short while later we received another demo. I'll just give you a little quote from the .txt...

"Sorry for those who thought :06 will be enough. It ain't ;)"

...and with these words Jozsef Szalontai showed us all how a double grenade jump should be done and did the Easy Run in 0:05. This has got to be the fastest optimisation ever.

That's all for the new maps until tomorrow. All I'll say is that unless you have done a REALLY exceptional Run on that blue map don't bother to send it in, Valeriy has been going mad on it...

Jozsef truly is in unstoppable form at the moment.

Alex's Easy Run of n3sp03 was never going to last long. After all, he missed the blindingly obvious slope/grenade jump up to the exit.

And we have our first demos on the very tricky n3sp03_2. It seems the threat of being shafted by Stubby has spurred some people into action.

Marlo Galinski wasn't happy with his Easy 100% of czg03, or the fact it took a few days to get onto the tables, so he has done a 10 second improvement to get 4:21.

And what update would be complete without Dan Stukanev improving one of his own records. Once again he's attacked the Nightmare Run of ih1m4 and this time managed to take it down by one more second to 0:36.

And our final demos tonight are all from the man sometimes known as "The True Spirit Of Christmas", Thomas Bergendorff. No one is quite sure why he's known as this because he's a miserable, selfish bum who hates children and likes to kick small, fluffy animals but there you go, there's no accounting for some people.

And if you still crave more demos after that lot then head on over to the Run Of The Whenever because THE RESULTS ARE UP. I don't think I've ever seen such a diverse set of routes and tactics and the last ten seconds of the winning demo need to be watched in slow motion to even start to appreciate what's going on...

Stay tuned for all the rest of the new map demos and anything else I might have forgotten this time.

Map Map Mappity Map Map. - 11:58 AM

That's right, folks. It's once again time for some new maps to be added for your running and viewing pleasure.

The first two of these are a little bit special because they're made by people who's name you might just about recognise if you've been paying attention...

The other four maps are all small/medium and seem very runable so top marks to Stubby for digging them out.

We've also received a bulging sackful of very cool demos over the last few days but I'm afraid I've just run out of time so I'll post them later today or tomorrow. Trust me, they're worth the wait. We've got demos from Swedes, Finns, Germans, Idiots, Hungarians, Russians, Trinidadians and all sorts of other foreign types.

And don't forget that today is the last day for entries to the latest Run of the Whenever - The Janitor. I have to say that I just love this map, and even though I've tried about a bazillion different routes I've still only managed to come up with a demo that, frankly, sucks donkey arse. I can't wait to see what the rest of you guys have done, though. :-)

Demos you could lick your cat with. - 8:55 PM

Hey there, folks! It's time once again to bring you another late edition of SDA Update. I'll be your host for the evening, or at least until I fall into another alcoholoic coma. Have you ever tried drinking Tia Maria and Baileys? It's a bit of a girl's drink but it blows your brain out of the top of your head after a pint or two. So before I start pissing in my trousers, telling you all that you're my best friend and I love you, or trying to start a fight with some invisible enemy let's get on with the action. And in tonights fine set of demos you will notice that I've also quoted the decimal places on some of them. That's because half tonights demos are actually in the x:xx.0, x:xx.1 and x:xx.2 range and really should be improved again soon...

Let's begin with THREE ID improvements.

Now for the first two demos on n3sp03. But before we see the demos I'd just like to warn you all that unless we get some more demos on these two maps soon Stubby has threatened to come round and see each and every one of in turn and anally violate you with his fearsome Viking weapon. You've been warned.

Dan Stukanev has turned his attention back to ih1m4, the bizarrely named Castle of Bad Die. He has used his ever improving bunny skillz (see the 100m run he has included in the .dz if you don't believe me) to wipe two seconds off of his previous Nightmare Run. 0:37.26.

The battle for the Easy Run of tohnsay continues with Amrik Kochhar taking his record back from Wim by one second by using the lift slope jump and bunny through the roof beams to get 1:31. And then the next day he improved it again by adding another grenade boost off a grunt to get 1:30. In fact this is 1:30.1 so I don't think this is the end of this little saga.

And we'll finish off with another crop of cool demos from the prolific Arturo Garcia Lasca.

Before you go check out this picture of some of our Swedish brothers at the recent DreamHack LAN party. Judging from Pixlas's message I don't think he'll be sending in any n3sp03 demos, and as for what the boy Marv has in his hand, well all I'll say is that it's nice to see standards being maintained. :-)

That's all for this time. Stay tuned for another new set of maps any day now, just as soon as I can dig out the URLs.

Blizzard Entertainment - 0:52 AM

Ok, cheesy headline I know, but it was the most appropiate I could come up with. It sorta suits the current state in Denmark, not that it bothers me, I love snow and raging winds :)

First up we have a new map, well actually it's one HUGE map and one small but hellish map. You're not a man if you haven't completed these maps on Nightmare skill killing every monster! Personally, this is one of the coolest custom Quake maps I've played in 4 years. It has the atmosphere, sounds and amount of monsters from Doom, and the Cradle of Filth grunt choir is just awesome! You gotta love them Fire-Shamblers too :) Even though most speedrunners prefer small maps, Richard and I simply couldn't resist adding this map to SDA.

Next up we have some demos and some very nice ones indeed:

I'll end this update with a link to the cheated site. Peter Horvath did his first cheated demo.....

Merry Christmas to everyone and a God Jul to the scandinavian speaking contries :)

Just a little quickie! - 6:45 PM

Just before I head off to get myself loaded with beers, I thought I'd bring to your attention that Ingmar has re-designed his Ill Mind Moves site with a brand new christmas look which is quite cool. Love them snow thingies :) Oh, and the thing he says about me is absolutely true! Hail Odin!!

Mr. Comedy Gold has disappeared! - 1:34 AM

I have no idea what has happened to Richard, but I'm convinced that he is up to his head with work. So, until he makes a return I thought it was about time someone took care of the demo updates. So here we go, another boring demo update from me....

First up we have Arturo García Lasca who made an assault on church.

Arturo didn't stop here though. He took his newly advanced skills and proceeded to new maps: Next up we have Prettyballs Andersson: Amrik Kochhar couldn't resist doing a demo for this update either: Welcome Fern from TeamFern everyone: And todays final demo is the coolest one and comes from Courtesy of Marlo Galinski: There's a new picture of Robert Axelsson up in his profile. What a stud :)

....what is this ?

Oops, I did it again.... - 11:06 PM

Sorry, but I accidently said you had to name your demos for the new ROTW contest like this: c8_run_yourname.dem, but that was wrong, please name your entries like this c8_yourname.dem instead, thanks.

A big applause goes out to Ingmar for recovering some of the old ROTW info. Now I only need to figure out what happened to the Lost World and Hell's Castle contests. You're also welcome to send me any entries you may have done for the 136 and 1 Minute In E4M5 contests and I'll post them on the ROTW page.

ROTW contest #8 is up + new contest page! - 8:27 AM

As a little teaser of what's to come here on SDA I've decided to launch the new Run of the Whenever page, even though it's not completely done yet. I've sorted out all the contests on Ilkka's site too, renamed all the demos and dzipped them! I've also dug up the old SDA ROTW contests, but alot of info about those are missing, so if anyone can add a little light to who won and who attended those contests, the dates etc. please email with any info you might have at stubgaard. The Championship Ladder has been revamped as well. It looks a little more structured now. Oh btw, this was actually the surprise I was going to add to SDA at Christmas Eve, but what the heck :) And to all you curious persons at the message board: Nope, there won't be a new QdQ project this christmas, at least not none that I know of....

Thankfully Hannu Kankaanpää heard my cry for help and made me a fun map for the ROTW named The Janitor. I bet most people will have a few days off from work/school during christmas, so there's no excuse for not submitting a demo for this contest. This will also be the last ROTW contest for 2001. I hope next year will be as much fun as this year has been, speedrunning wise that is :)

ROTW contest #7 results are up! - 7:04 PM

Phew, last night was tough! But the funniest thing is that I actually got to speak with a foxy lady from Houston Texas, so you could say in some sort of way that my update from last night had an effect :) I got to touch her boobs, so that'll keep me satisfied for a week or so, and she actually agreed to be my private english teacher as well! It's going to be fun to see how that turns out :) Enough of that, check out the results from the latest Run of the Whenever. It has been one of the coolest contests so far in my opinion. Also check out the Championship Ladder to see who advanced and who didn't. The competition has heated up and Jozsef smells blood....

Oh man I smell bad, time to take a shower....

Normal Service Has Resumed. - 4:45 PM

Hello Folks. Sorry for the delay in doing this update, and also my absence from ICQ, e-mail, the Message Board, etc. (In case anyone noticed). The fact is I managed to pick up a rather nasty dose of food poisoning on Friday and since then I have either been in bed or in the toilet. Sometimes, unfortunately, both at the same time.
So I'll start updating, see how far I get, and if I don't manage to do all the demos then that's just toooooo bad.

Luckily we have hit the usual December slow-down so there isn't too much of a backlog of demos, but those we have received have been some real beauties. :-)

First we have a demo that I have been waiting to arrive ever since he did the Easy version. Amrik Kochhar has done a mighty improvement to Robert's Nightmare Run (or 100%, whatever) of hipend. He has come up with a new route that allows him to... No. I'll let you see for yourselves. 0:33. 5 seconds faster. In fact, he sent in two versions of this demo because Nolan didn't think the first version was asthetically pleasing enough. :-D

Next we have two demo's from yet another SDA virgin. His name is a familiar sight on the Run of the Whenever results table but until now he has never sent in a record. Ladies and Gentlemen will you please welcome Mr Wim Loones.

Amrik has also done the Easy Run (The Long Way) of tohnsay. He has added a grenade jump and generally done a very slick looking demo which turns out to only be one second faster. It looks like it should be at least five seconds faster than Optic's time but you can't argue with QdQStats, it's 1:33.

Arturo García Lasca has been busy this last week since he found out that all his playing problems were down to not using WinQuake. He has improved three of the records on hellctle.

The houstrps runs continue to attract attention. This time Rutger Baks has pitched in with a demo one second faster than Dan's Easy Run. This 0:33 is looking good, but is still not optimum...

We'll finish this update with some mad optimising from that well known comedy double act El Muchachos Optimiso : Jozsef et Valeriy.

That's all for this time. Remember, there's only one day left to get your Run of the Whenever entries in to Stubby. I can't wait to see the winning entries and I'm sure that there is going to be a few suprise routes.

And speaking of suprises, the one mentioned by Thomas below will have to wait a little longer as I haven't managed to complete (or even make much of a start to) my part of it. Be patient, it should be worth the wait, it's made us laugh a lot already just thinking about it. :-) To be honest, I haven't even managed to take my new PC out of it's box yet. I really should get round to that some time...

My head's in the clouds but my feet are on the ground. - 7:54 PM

Good evening, my friends, and welcome to the wonderful world of speedrunning. And in tonight's update we bring you a redemption, some improvements, a returning prodigal, and the coops I couldn't be bothered to do last time.

But due to the marvelous soothing effect of vodka and medicinally herbal roll-ups I'm going to see if I can get through this whole update without being rude, crude or generally insulting to anyone.

First up we have "Angel Face" Amrik Kochhar who has not only atoned for his previous low quality submission with this beautiful one second improvement to Robert's Easy Run of hipend. He has also come up with a new term to describe this type of demo. The route here is the same as Robert's but he has managed to do each part slightly quicker: all the way through he was Fighting Against The Fractions. And as far as FATF[tm] demos go, this one is outstanding. (BTW Amrik. I am stealing your idea. FATF is now [tm] and (c) SDA 2001. If you want to argue about it you'll have to speak to my friend Johnny Cochrane). 0:17.

And being the little cutie he is Amrik has also put everyone out of their misery and done the Nightmare Run of tohnsay in 0:05, one second quicker than Fabian. I was quite suprised that this was the only 0:05 we received .

Next we have Anders "Nice Guy" Nordensten who has further improved his Nightmare 100% of altus2 by two more seconds to get 0:48. This now looks very slick and will take some beating. (Except that every time I say that about a demo it falls within a few weeks. Guarenteed.)

Next we have a one second improvement to Jozsef's Nightmare Run of Wind Tunnels. Who could do such a run? We all knew he couldn't stay playing toss, mass-appeal games forever. Ladies and Gentlemen, it's the return of Daniel "Hey everyone! Look at my cute little butt!" Hansson. 0:59.

And just to prove that he really is playing with the big boys again he has improved his Easy 100% of Wind Tunnels by one second to get 1:31.

Damn! I just realised that I missed a golden opportunity to make a comment about "Daniel going up Jozsef's wind tunnel". Oh well. I'll save it for when Joe takes this record back. :-)

Staying with the Swedes, "Cock Throbbin'" Carl Tholin has improved Thomas's Nightmare run of czg03 by 29 seconds(!) by using his Easy run route. Personally, I think that this 1:03 looks a lot slicker than the Easy Run and also includes a very cunning armour grabbing trick.

Getting back to Daniel. As mentioned last update he has teamed with Jonny "Breathe deep! That's the smell of a real man!" Andersson and Martin "Mambo wit' tha' love python" Selinus to produce a couple of very impressive coops.

Then Martin and Jonny got fed up of Hansson's constant whining and did the Easy 100% of The Tower of Despair on their own in 0:46, 4 seconds faster than Ilkka and Juho-Jussi. An impressive piece of coop play.

And finally Martin and Jonny hooked up with Niklas "Do you know why they call me Pixlas? Come here and let me show you. Ohhhhh, yeah baby, that's gooood..." Wikstrand to do the Easy 100% of The Ebon Fortress two seconds faster than Robert, Rickard and Alexander. 0:54.

We've received another new profile, this time from Timo, and also an updated picture of Anders.

I hope you're all having fun with the latest Run of the Whenever, for the first time ever I think that I'm going to get within a few seconds of the winning entry. I'll still come last, but that's not the point. And do please try to remember that your entries should me mailed to Stubby only and not the main SDA mailbox.

That's it for now. My wife, the lovely Abigail, thinks I've been working too hard recently and deserved a present so she's just spent the money I earned doing all the work on a new P4 1.6GHz PC for me. So I'm off now to put it together. Stay safe...

Run Of The Whenever contest #7 is up! - 5:36 PM

After one month of slacking we're back with a new edition of Run of the Whenever. You can find all the details in the readme.txt provided with the map. I just want to get one thing clear: I can't map myself, so therefore I rely on other peoples efforts to make a map for me. I can easily come up with some shitty idea on an ID map, but I doubt the majority thinks that is fun. So, if someone out there has mapping skills and would like to help out with making a few RotW maps I'd be greatful. Basically, the point I'm trying to make here is, that if you're not satisfied with the RotW competition (I know some of you aren't), then I'd appreciate it if you either gave me some help, or accept that I can't map jack shit......

On another note....We have a two cool christmas gifts coming up in the near future. One of them will be posted on Christmas Eve, and the other one is just around the corner. Hint: Certain persons may have heard me talk about some kind of award for SDA contributions......

Oh and btw, in case you guys think I don't do much for SDA anymore, I can assure you that I work my ass off with loads of stuff, namely QdQ stuff, and a certain christmas gift as mentioned above. And to be honest, Richard is a better updater than every other updater there has ever been on SDA, so you're better off with me handling the RotW/player profiles/new maps etc, while Richard takes care of the updates :-)

I'd call him a Living Legend but I don't want to put him under that much pressure. - 10:37 PM

As I'm sure most of you have heard by now, Jozsef Szalontai has produced a demo of absolutely outstanding quality. What makes this even more amazing is that he credits Jonny with the new route tweak ideas! I won't say much more about the demo because I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but it finishes off with a trick we all knew was possible, but I didn't expect to see it executed this perfectly. Gloom Keep Easy Run in 0:16, 1 second faster than Markus's thought-to-be-optimum time. Must Download.

Dan Stukanev has now done his fifth successive improvement to the Nightmare Run on houstrps. He repeated his previous route but managed to save enough health to do the final rocket boost to save one more second. 0:37

But unfortunately for Dan Thomas Bergendorff did the same thing but with a better final rocket boost to save yet another second and get 0:36. You're not going to let him get away with that, are you, Dan?

Moving on to sgc5 and the empty spot for the Easy 100%. Amrik Kochhar sent in this disgraceful 2:06 (which includes a nice egg demo showing just how badly a dog can fuck you up). He begged me not to post it but I've had a hard week so I'm going to make someone else suffer a bit as well. It makes me sad to see that one of the brightest rising stars of SDA can produce such a low quality demo. Luckily for him we also received a nice 1:37 from Jozsef so soon nobody will remember. Beat this, Amrik. Redeem yourself.

And it looks like I owe a pint to Matthias Belz who was the first (in fact the only) person to correctly answer my "palindrome" question about this map from a couple of updates ago. Thanks also to those of you that slightly missed the point and mailed me with the definition of a palindrome, but only Matthias knew that Bolton was a palindrome of Ipswich. Enough said. This subject is now as dead as the parrot I stole it from.

Follwing on from his drunken rantings last time, Ilkka Kurkela was as good as his word and took the Easy 100% of armorgod from Optic by 20 seconds to get 3:46. This now gives Ilkka total ownage of this level.

And the level domination doesn't end there. Anders Nordensten has consolidated his hold on altus2 by taking every record that wasn't his and improving one that was.

The tod 100% madness is still not over! Annoyed at only getting an "honourable mention" last time Arturo García Lasca has come up with yet another variation on killing the first ogre. This makes the rocket ammo extremely tight but it does save one more second on both runs. Easy 100% in 0:29 and Nightmare 100% in 0:29. Will this be the final word on the subject?

And to finish up our single player demos for tonight we finally have our first demo from Rutger Baks. If you've been following this Message Board thread you'll know he's done the Easy run of tohnsay in 0:05, one second faster than Fabian. To be honest, there was never really any chance we would keep this run from being posted on the tables. We just kept quiet because we were interested to see how the thread developed and also because we didn't think it would ever arrive.
You see. Rutger has been saying he's done this demo in this time, and that demo in that time but whenever he tries to send one to us it "mysteriously" fails to arrive. In fact, the demo posted here (and Rutger's profile) were both mailed by someone else, someone we all know and trust. And that's when I realised...
Rutger "Minwater" Baks doesn't really exist! He is in fact Jozsef "schitzophrenic" Szalontai's Dutch split personality! All the evidence is there, you just wait and see if I'm right. ;-)

Since we're on the subject of profiles I think I should mention that we've had four new one's arrive in the last week. (From Rutger/Joe, Niklas, Anders and Big Tommy B). If your profile doesn't include a picture then please feel free to send one in, it always gives us all a cheap laugh at your expense.

In case you haven't seen this yet, check out the side panel on Fr3n's review of kjsp1. Pure class.

I heard from Pretty Balls Andersson that him, Iron Balls Hansson and Big Balls Selinus were at a 5000 person LAN Party this weekend. But you know what a liar Jonny is. There was probably only about 8 people there: The three of them, 4 of their friends and the very lovely Jennie (who I spent about three hours starring at through their webcam on Thursday night. :-)). They have sent in some very nice coop demos but I'm afraid they will have to wait a day or two as I am about to drop dead.

In fact there are already two first-class demos that have arrived while I was writing this update but I'm too demo'd out tonight to do them justice, so another one coming tomorrow, I think. And while we're waiting, let's have a little sing along...

Lemme hear you say Yoooooooo!

Ilkka Conquers Anders's Tower! - 7:51 PM

Howdy, howdy, howdy. The deluge of demos has slowed down. I finally have some time to do an update at less than 500kph. The sun is shining. Things are gooood.

As expected, the majority of this updates demos are for the 100%s of tod using the new, quadded route. First we have the Easy 100%.

Much the same story for the Nightmare 100%...

We also had impressive 0:31 demos on both skills from Arturo García Lasca. But unfortunately for him they came in several hours after Ilkka's.

Dan Stukanev has turned in a reeeal nice improvement to his Nightmare Run of houstrps. He skipped the red armour at the start and still somehow managed to survive the carnage in the middle of the map. This meant he couldn't do the RJ at the end but he made up for that with a much slicker Gold Key grab. 0:38. Two seconds faster.

Today's final demo comes from a very drunk Ilkka. He has improved Nolan's Nightmare 100% of armorgod by 41 seconds to get 3:53. The run itself is good enough but the .txt file is a classic, in which he pays homage to just about every runner you can think of. The whole thing just goes to prove what most of us have known for a long time: The Finns just can't handle their beer! ;-)

In other news, as I'm sure most of you are aware by now, TeamShambler is now closed. He announced this in a statement last week that was almost completely stolen from the one Nolan made a few weeks ago. When I tried to question him further on ICQ he totally evaded my questions by the simple expedient of not being there. Still, love him or hate him you can't deny the good work he did bringing high quality SP levels to the attention of the wider community.
So long, Shambles. See you on the message board.

But where does that leave the rest of us? How are we going to find out about what's new in the Q1 mapping community. Step forward everyones favourite potted filicales, Fr3n! Yes, it looks like The Fernster is going to continue where Shamby left off at his incredibly imaginatively titled TeamFern Quake Level Reviews! When I tried to question him further about his plans for the future of this site he managed to avoid answering due to the fact that I forgot to send the e-mail..

And finally, if you haven't yet filled in a player profile for yourself, or if you wish to update your old one, then grab this and let us all know who you really are.

Bullets 3 - The Owning - 4:00 PM

Fuck the new maps, just take a look at what Martin Selinus has done on Ziggurat Vertigo. He has improved Robert's old Easy Run by one second to get what looks to be an optimal 0:29. No bunny skillz required, it's just one long rocket ballet. Must Download.

Moving on to the new maps, we will begin with sgc5. Also known (probably only by me) as "The Palindrome Map". There's a pint waiting for the first person to tell me why. Winner collects. :-)

Anders Nordensten has been putting some time in on the very vertical altus2.

Terrible map: Loads of lovely demos. It can only be tod.

Aleksander Osipov was not happy that Dan had ended his total ownage of compugib. And he found that, just like cracking one off the wrist, once he'd started he just couldn't stop.

Never one to leave a gaping slot unfilled, I did a Nightmare 100% table filler on perssp2. Shame I forgot to trigger the super-secret on the way out. I even saved a grenade especially for the job. 4:56.

We'll finish off tonight with two very impressives coops.

That's all for now. Gotta run!

They push 'em out like bullets part 2 - 7:23 PM

Let's continue the onslaught on the new maps...

This update will most likely contain some errors as we're still receiving loads of demos for the new maps, and it's dificult to sort out who did what and who did it first etc.

They push 'em out like bullets!!! - 11:39 PM

Holy cow, you guys won't believe how many of the same entries we have received since yesterday, I don't even dare to count the amount!

Let's kick it off with the most popular map of the new batch.

Next up we have demos on tod which also proved to be popular.

The last map from the new batch we received demos on were altus2

There have also been 4 very cool demos on maps other than the new ones.

Damn, you guys are good. There are already 5 more demos sitting in the inbox! But I will have to offer my apologies to Alex, Hank & Thomas because I'm not fucking doing them tonight! ;-)

This update might be a bit messy and disjointed but that's for two reasons. Firstly, it was hard to sort out all the entries that were submitted. And secondly it was such a tiring job that it took two of us to write the update. So if we screwed up something please don't hesitate to tell us. (True SDA afficionados might like to try to work out which bits I wrote and which bits Stubby wrote, except for this paragraph, of course, as it's completely fucking obvious. :-))

It's that time of month again.... - 3:46 PM

....no, I'm not talking about that awful dreaded thing women has every month, I'm talking about NEW MAPS!!!

The second batch consists of three fairly small maps, plus one medium sized map.

We even have a third batch of maps coming up soon, we just need to fix a couple of issues like a brand new progs etc.

Enjoy, and happy running...

Alex Owns Amrik! - 11:43 PM

At the end of the last demo update I mentioned a suggestion by Amrik Kochhar to use an Ogre-Grenade jump to the Silver Key to speed up the runs on hip3m3. The suggestion turned out to be a load of bollocks, but Nolan then mentioned to Amrik that the key could be intercepted by using a bunny from just before the edge of the platform. Amrik came back some hours later with this nice Easy Run in 0:41. Nolan was, frankly, disgusted that he'd only managed a one second improvement, saying that the trick was easily worth a three second gain.

And unfortunately for Amrik, Aleksander Osipov was listening in using some strange Finnish telepathy technique and by using the very same bunny (and a different start route) managed to improve Amrik's time from the last update by four seconds, surpassing Nolan's prediction. 0:38

Alex also applied the same route to the Nightmare Run and came soooooo close to equalling his Easy Run time with this 0:39.1, 9 seconds faster than Optic. This demo also wins my "Coolest trick in this update" award for the perfectly executed spiral bunny down the spiral stairs ending with a monster slide off a DeathKnight.

Speaking of DeathKnights, Valeriy Burmistrov has optimised yet another level. This time he has scraped one final second off of Evan's pg4 Easy Run to get 0:06. Do you know, to this day I have no idea how many and what kind of monsters appear at the end of this map. The first time I ever played it I worked out the telefrag trick (well, it was very obvious). Apparently there's a gold dragon there but all I remember is a big pile of gibs. :-)

Actually, going back to Alex, I'm a bit dissapointed that he didn't send us a demo in time to join the list at the start of the last update, because I have just noticed that a cool corruption of the middle of his name would have been Droz. :-)

David Hocking has planted his foot firmly up Shambler's butt-hole with this fine Easy Run demo on ih1m2. Two naked gren jumps with monsters all around (I love the placement of the second grenade. I think "haphazard" might be the word. :-)) Make this a very tough run. 0:30. A 9 second improvement.

Next, Carl Tholin has decided that Thomas can't own all the czg03 records.

Next up we have two 100% demos on climb from Arturo García Lasca.

Our man in Sosnovy Bor, Dan Stukanev, has pitched in with a rather good Nightmare Run on compugib which has toppled Alex from his total dominance of this level. He improved it by one second to get 0:33.

We had a nice entry for the RotW Competition 6 from Robert Axelsson but he didn't climb down from his woman in time to send it in before the deadline. A shame really as he would have got an overall 5th place.

But he did find the time to fill the gap in the abw tables and do the very hard Nightmare Run in the impressive time of 2:53. I lost track of the number of times he nearly died after the first 15. :-)

And no update would be complete without Jozsef Szalontai, whoring it up on a Beyond Belief level. This time he has changed the end route on bbelief3 to improve Martin's Nightmare Run by two seconds to get 0:51. He thinks another two seconds should be possible and I can't wait to see that demo.

Don't forget to check out the Windlash Runs page which Stubby has updated (Evan, where are you, Dude?) with the latest crop of Cheated and Naked Runs. There are some real treats here so head on over and take a look.

RotW contest #6 results are up! - 1:07 AM

It has already taken me several hours to finish up the rotw stuff and I'm extremely tired and I want to get some sleep, so I'll make this short. Head on over to the Run of the Whenever page to see who won and who advanced in the Championship Ladder.

We Have A Winner! - 8:21 PM

Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the dust has now settled following the stampede in the run up to 5000th posted demo.
We had entries from Marvin, Axel, Nordie, Bergie, Sazzle, Stubby, Kochie and Neimie. But of course, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

So in the order they were received...

And to prove that sending in multiple demos pay's off, Thomas also improved Tim's Easy 100% of the same map by 88 seconds. Which means that

THOMAS
BERGENDORFF

has given us demo number 5000 with this 5:53. As a reward for this he will be receiving...

Congratulations to Thomas and a big thank-you to everyone else that has contributed in any way, ever to anything at all. Now let's get on and record the next 5000. :-)

Thomas also filled the gap for the Nightmare Run of czg03 to give himself all four records on the map. You will, of course, notice that this is faster than Amrik's Easy Run. ;-) 1:32.

Martin sent in three more superb demos, unfortunately these were literally a few minutes too late.

It looks like Jozsef Szalontai has optimised another Beyond Belief record. This time it is the Nightmare Run of bbelief1 which he has done in 0:15, one second faster than Alex.

The irrepressible Timo Nieminen keeps on working on the ID Maps. He has improved his Easy Run of The Tomb of Terror by a second to get 0:25. I just love the double OG jump at the start of this run. It's just the kind of trick I love watching because I know I will never be able to do it myself. Outstanding.

Staying down in The Tomb we have Thomas Stubgaard who also seems to be unstoppable on the ID levels at the moment. He has made fairly light work of improving his Easy 100% by one second to get 0:51. Love them curly bunnies in the lava room!

Amrik Kochhar will not stop until every Hipnotic record is his. This time it is the Easy Run of hip3m3 which he managed to do one second faster than Ilkka. 0:42. He includes a suggestion for an even faster way to do it in his .txt but ohhhh, man it would be hard.

And we will finish up this (once again) incredibly long update the same way we started it. With Anders improving his Easy Run of abw by yet another second to get 1:41. I think this will need a new trick to make much more progress.

That's all for now my dear, sweet, lovely, fragrant friends. I'm off for four days in a tiny house in the middle of nowhere with no phone, television or PC and the nearest neighbours are over a mile away. Total peace. :-) Stay clean!

Je Suis Un Arse. - 8:50 AM

Thanks to all of you who have kindly pointed out my obvious mistake in the last update.

Unfortunately, as you all know and I forgot, for a coop record to be valid it needs to be faster than the current Single Player time. As Snoop and Stu's jzblue_3 Easy Run was one second slower than Markus's I'm going to have to remove it from the tables. :-(

Sorry guys, but choosing to challenge a 4 second Markus run was maybe a little ambitious anyway. ;-)

This does, of course, mean that the count of demos reverts to (4993).

Christmas is coming, which means I get to rrriiip the heads off some more turkeys! *drool* - 9:57 PM

Evening folks. I'd like to start this update by calling for a Jihad against my former friend and fellow SDA updater Stubby The Bastard for laughing at my haircut in the last update. My revenge for this will, of course, be slow and painful and I would like to point out that I've never had a mullet in my life. :-)

The countdown to demo 5000 continues. There is some confusion about exactly which number we are up to so I have decided to draw the line here at 4985. The demos listed here are numbered according to the time they arrived in the SDA mailbox.

abw has seen some hot competition in the last few days.

Jozsef Szalontai has improved the two Runs on....
No, let me start again.
Jozsef Szalontai has optimised the two Runs on bbelief4.

There has also been a fair amount of action on tfl. This level has plently of health, plenty of weapons and plenty of ammo. It also has plenty of big monsters and absolutely no fucking armour. :-)

And finally, we have a coop from David Hocking and SDA newcummer Stuart Mason. They used up 34961 bytes of the world's bandwidth to produce this jzblue_3 Easy Run in 0:05 (0:04 ;-)) (4994). Nice of you to join us, Stu. Let's see some more of what you can do.

So there you have it. Only six demos to go to the big five oh oh oh. Hopefully you're all getting stuck in to the current Run Of The Whenever and if ANYONE gets beaten by me in this one then they might as well just give up now. :-)

There was something else I really meant to say but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

Christmas is a coming, the geese are getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man's hat... - 4:41 PM

Ok, this update will seem like crap compared to Richard's gigantic update.....

Check out this thread on the Compet-N forum. It has quite an amusing development :)

David Hocking followed Tim's advice and filled out a player profile which you can view here.

And as the grand finale I think we all should have a big laugh at Richard's expense. This is the man you all admire and love so much for his humorous updates! That's the look of a real MAN boys and girls....sideburns that would make even Elvis proud. You can't help but love that mullet too :-)

All demos download available here (UK) and here (Denmark).

Salute Me, Hannu!... - 11:12 PM

...That's the cry that went up from two SDA regulars this week as Jozsef Szalontai and Amrik Kochhar both did the incredibly tricky double slope jump to the silver key on kjsp1.

Anders Nordensten and Tim Doherty have also been fighting it out for the Easy 100% on this very popular map.

Well it seems that the new maps have got a few mixed reviews. Some people love them, some people hate them. There have been a few people saying that they're not short or easy enough, but to be honest when you have Nolan, Thomas and Me looking at maps what do you really expect. After all, we all three of us have a history of prefering to work our way around a long and hard one.

Damn, that was a lot of text just to get in one smutty comment! But it made me chuckle to myself so I'm afraid you're stuck with it. But for those wishing for some slightly quicker maps we should have something to announce within a couple of weeks of the end of the latest Run Of The Whenever.

Now we have everyone's favourite Mad Axeman Thomas Stubgaard with yet another very cool ID record improvement. He has beaten one of my favourite demos, Alex's Nightmare 100% of Castle Of The Damned, by four seconds to give him 1:06. This now makes 10 straight demo updates with an ID improvement in it! You people just don't know when to give up...

Making his comeback after far too many months away we have Marlo Galinski recapturing his Easy 100% of black1 from Mads-Peter by 13 seconds. He makes it look so simple... 2:24.

Getting back to the new levels we have two more amazing demos from Joszef on perssp2.

We finally have some demos on tfl. It's a shame people haven't liked this level too much as I'm sure it has good potential.

And as if to prove me right he has done a czg03 Easy 100% tablefiller. 7:21.

That's it for the new maps, but we also have a couple of regular custom map demos.

Amrik has also improved his Easy Run Maraton of the black levels by 10 seconds to give him a much better but still highly improvable 4:44.

And now on to the coops. We have had two sets of runners sending in demos this week and it really couldn't get much better than these guys.

We have all hoped for the return of the Team Supreme and sure enough Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath have produced two fine new demos.

Could anyone compete with this level of quality coop play? Just ask Alexander Osipov and Ilkka Kurkela. They started off with a table filler, just to get their eye in.

Then they improved two of their own times.

They then felt the need to take some MP records.

And for a grand finale they totally destroyed Evan and Basil's Nightmare 100% of hip1m2 by a massive 33 seconds (!) to get 1:24.

Holy shit. That was one mutha of a long update. I'm knackered! I started this at 09:00 this morning completely sober and, after endless interuptions, have finished it at 23:00 completely wasted. But before I go there's one or two items of news which I'd like to draw your attention to.

That's all for tonight. A big thank-you to Stubby for mentioning my birthday in the last update and an even bigger thanks to all those that ICQ'd me to wish me a happy birthday. Cheers guys. :-)

Massive all demo download available from, as ever, here (UK) and here (Denmark).

RotW contest #6 is up! - 3:00 PM

A new edition of Run of the Whenever has seen the light. This time we challenge you to compete on a map courtesy of Attila Csernyik. Have you got what it takes to compete in the 110m hurdles? Are you a true competitor to Colin Jackson? Well, if you feel up for the challenge, then go find your running shoes and run, run as fucking fast as you can....

Grab the map here and remember to always read the rules thoroughly before submitting your entries.
You won't get the usual 20 championship points for a winning entry, but only 10 points as there's four types of disciplines this time around. This means that the maximum score that could be given for all disciplines would be 40 championship points in total.

Thanks to Aleksander for pointing out a stupid mistake I had done in the readme.txt. So if you've already grabbed the map before this update came online, then please download it again to clear out any confussion :-)

This contest will last for 14 days. Deaday, November 18th,17:00 EST, 22:00 GMT, 23:00 CET, 2001.

P.S. A big hooray for Morfans who turned 32 today. Definitely the oldest speedrunner in town :-)
But please don't bug him too much on ICQ today, as he'll most likely have a huge hangover from last night.....

Well Shiver Me Timbers! - 10:46 PM

I'm not even going to bother saying anything here. To keep you from these next two demos would be a crime against humanity.

Markus Taipale has totally excelled himself yet again with two outrageously good ID demos. These are so obviously Must Download that I'm not even going to say it. (Okay, I know I just did, but you know what I mean).

It would appear that Nolan "Grandmaster" Pflug has been abusing his position as Head Honcho at SDA by getting in some early practice on czg03. It's the only way I can assume he has managed to do this as near as damn it optimised Nightmare 100% so soon after the map's release. I am very disappointed that a man of respect such as Nolan could behave in such a way, but I must say that moves such as leaving the YA secret until the end and consistantly failing to kill most of the Scrags were a stroke of genius. 14:03

All the rest of Today's demos come courtesy of two people. Amrik "Two Aitches" Kochhar and Tim "Not Shannon" Doherty.

All demos download available here (UK) and here (Denmark). Sorry I missed a couple of demos last time. Typically it was my own demo I forgot to include. There have been a couple of demos come in while I've been writing this but lack of time precludes me from posting them. :-( So digest these demos over the next couple of days and prepare yourself for another round of quality speedruns. The same, only more so!

Wednesday, October 31st by Morfans

Love The New ICQ Nick, Jonny. - 11:41 PM

And now for a lightening fast round up of the demos that arrived between the last update and yesterday evening (don't ask why, the inscrutable ways of the Morfans are not for mortal minds to ponder. (Actually it's because I gave up drinking alcohol for the whole of October and it's very, very nearly November and so I have to go and remind myself what an enormous gin and tonic looks like. :-) )), including the first few on the new maps!

Martin Selinus has decided to fight back at Jozsef over the Hell's Atrium Long Way Nightmare Run. This looks like it was hard work but you can't argue with the quality of the bunnies or the fact that it's two seconds faster. 0:56.

Martin has also teamed up with Anders Nordensten to do two impressive coops.

On to the new levels. First Amrik Kochhar has done the Easy Run of czg03 with a nice route. A little messy at the end, though. 1:35

Moving on to kjsp1 and we have two very nice demos.

Tim also went mad on abw doing both 100% records in two solid demos. He did the Easy in 2:34 and the Nightmare in 3:40. He cut the health very fine indeed at the end of this one. :-)

And finally for tonight we move on to perssp2.

That's it for now, the rest of the demos will be posted in the next couple of days. Keep 'em coming. :-)

Trinidad Tornado Tackles Tur Torment! - 1:56 AM

Evening all! I'd like to start by apologising for the length of time it's taken me to get this update finished. You just would not belieeeeeeve the carnage going on in the Morfy household over the last couple of days! Then, as soon as I sat down to do the update I accidently started playing Quake for the next three hours. But now, before my ICQ explodes from "Are you updating?" overload, this weeks demos...

Let's start off with Daniel Andersson and his old, old demo (well, it's been sat in my inbox for a week) on czg_moon. Just when we all thought this level had quietened down he improved Amrik's Nightmare Run by three seconds with some nifty bunny work to get 0:37.

Amrik Kochhar might have just lost one record but I don't think he'll be too upset. He has sent in three demos on the Hipnotic levels this week.

Last time we saw newcomer Anders Nordensten make his first contributions to The Archive. He has followed it up by shaving one second off of Fabian's thought to be optimised Easy Run of The Bastardry. Way to go Anders! 0:21

And it's just as well he did otherwise he would have no records left because Max Rebo, Mr Daniel Magnusson, has fought back and retaken both of his mntbase2 Run records.

The marathons just keep on coming from Typhoon Tim Doherty. He has done the first ever marathons on the Black Episode.

Staying on the Black Levels, Mads-Peter Stubgaard has proved that at least one Stubgarrd has got some Quake skillz. He improved Marlo's Easy 100% of black1 by six seconds to get 2:37. Tim, watch this demo to see how to avoid the fish in the water. ;-)

Mads-Peter then teamed up with his big brother Thomas "The Axe" Stubgaard to tackle the Easy 100% of The Haunted Halls. They improved Evan and Justin's time by three seconds to get a comfortable 1:11.

That's the end of the demos, and now, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have the first batch of new maps....

So no excuses. Get your best running trousers on (or "pants" as the Americans will insist on calling them) and let the battle begin. But be quick (hee hee) because there's even more coming soon(ish).

Happy running!

SDA Rules Review. - 4:57 PM

Hey there people. Now that Nolan is taking a well deserved rest we've decided that it would be a good time to remind people of the rules and guidelines for submitting demos and suggestions. Most people know this stuff already but recently one or two people have been letting standards slip...

Simple, eh? As I said at the top, 90% of people are doing these things anyway, most of those that don't are new to the scene, and those who seem to be deliberately trying to annoy us (and I'm not talking about Ken this time) can kiss me right on my big, purple bell end.

Which brings us on to a subject that has been quite a hot Message Board topic recently. New maps. We have had a good long think about this and have decided the following.

So there you have it. Any questions then mail us, ICQ us or post something on the Message Board. Above all, let's keep on running the greatest game ever made. You know it makes sense.

BTW. There will be a demo update sometime over the weekend. I couldn't do one this week as I have had an absolute c*&t of a week at work.

Shut the f*ck up and have fun! - 7:23 PM

It seems that in a recent months there are a lot of people, who shall remain nick-less, that often take it upon themselves to complain about a lot of things SDA related. Maybe it's the stupid fileplanet situation on gamespy, which we have no control over, or the instability of the message board, which we also have no control over and Gamespy doens't believe that it malfunctions.

There's nothing wrong at all with kindly pointing out typos and mess ups in the tables (I have to thank Matthias for always keeping tabs on us) but we don't want to hear complaints about things we can't control. Lately some people have wondered why I don't do updates anymore. One reason is I simply don't have time. But the main reason is that it wasn't fun anymore. I started my quake page over four years ago just because I felt like having a resource to list all the speed running records. At the time they all sucked because it was mainly just me. Over the past 4.5 years I've seen nearly a gig of demo come in my inbox. Some have sucked. Some are ok. Some are great. Some make my jaw drop to this day in amazement. I guess that's why I started it all... to see what could be done.

But you know what? A few months ago I quit caring as much, because a sum of a lot of people made the whole thing not fun anymore. You know who you are most likely, and I know you'll probably take this to mean that i 'hate' you all and I dont really care if you think that anymore. As far as I'm concerned you won't see an update from me again.

Good luck Stubby and Richard...

Serious Business. - 8:45 PM

Good Evening Folks! And welcome to tonight's edition of "SDA Presents: The Morfans Comedy Bronze Half Hour".
And in a packed show tonight we have some outstanding demos, several references to masturbation, some unfunny commentary and at least one recycled joke.

We will begin with the Hungarian Bunny Machine, Jozsef Szalontai, who has taken both of the Long Way Runs on Hell's Atrium.

  • First he improved Sebastian's Easy Run by one second. 0:55.
  • Then the next day he beat that by another second to get 0:54.
  • And finally he destroyed Martin's Nightmare Run by three seconds with a phenomenal fiend boost followed by some of the worst Quad SNG shooting I have ever seen. :-) 0:58.

Amrik Kochhar has been pedalling his bike like a demon for the last few days and has managed to take two Hipnotic records from our ol' pal Optic.

  • He did a very slick run around hip3m2, managing a 5 second improvment to the Easy 100% to get 1:50.
  • And he improved the Nightmare Run of hip2m1 by one second by bouncing a couple of grenades near the shambler at the end. Of course, if he could actually *hit* the shambler this could be even quicker. 0:31.

Speaking of Optic reminds me: What do you call a man with a 2 inch penis trying to have sex?

*drum roll*

Just-in!

I would like to make it quite clear that the "joke" above was only prompted by Mr Fleck's christian name, it was in no way suppossed to imply that he has a small cock. In fact I've been told by an undisclosed source known only as "S" that when he gets it up it looks like a two year old child's arm holding a big, red apple.

It's always nice to see new people submitting demos, and this week Anders Nordensten has lost his SDA virginity with two impressive demos.

  • For his first ever improvement he has done the Easy Run of mntbase2 one second faster than DanielM. 0:53.
  • And then, flushed with success, he decided to improve Daniel's Nightmare run, this time by a big 4 seconds. 1:03.

Keep up the good work, Anders, and soon you'll be submitting demos as good as these three from someone who's testicular beauty has been the talk of the Message Board recently. Jonny Andersson has been following Stubby's advice on developing a smoother wrist motion with a hectic training schedule of one-handed web surfing.

  • He utilised a loooong bunny/slope jump at the start of polygon2 to grab the silver key and improve Martin's Long Way Easy Run by 11 seconds to give him 0:34.
  • And he used the same trick to take one second off of Carl's Long Way Nightmare Run. I wouldn't be suprised if Carl gave him a kick right in his pretty balls for that one. 0:21.
  • And finally he improved Evan's Easy Run of czg07c by one second to get 0:31. He say's that the idea for the improvement came from someone called Hansson. ;-)

The big download file is, as always, available from here (UK) and here (Denmark). This one contains a bonus egg demo from Stubby proving that although ogres are stupid, they have amazing powers of balance, even after they're dead.

Enjoy the demos. See you next time.

What's in a Name? - 8:05 PM

Greetings. I hope you've all recovered from the strain of the latest Run Of The Whenever and are working on some new high quality demos to amaze us all with. Demos like these, in fact...

Two more ID records have been broken this week.

  • Martin "Tarzan" Selinus has swung into the The Crypt of Decay and improved Timo's Easy 100% by 4 seconds. There are one or two minor mistakes so it can still be improved but overall a very fast piece of work. 1:13.
  • Take a really long, boring map (say, Hell's Atrium), crank it up to Nightmare skill, then do a Nightmare 100% that contains probably the biggest mistake in the ID tables but is still 7 seconds faster than the current record. It can only be Thomas "Slope Jump" Stubgaard. He has also included two egg demos. One of a very annoying spawn bug and the other of some very funny Death Knight behaviour. (I've also tried this with vores and zombies. A big group of zombies looks hilarious doing this). 2:30.

One of our friends from Russia, Dan Stukanev, seems to be on a mission to capture all of Optics old records. He has now turned his attention to the Hipnotic tables and the Easy Run of hip3m4. He improved it by the usual one second to give him 1:07.

Tim Doherty has definitely put his bike crash and battle with the flu behind him as he completes his second Nightmare 100% Marathon in a week. This time he has filled the hole in the Beyond Belief table with this cautious, but impressive (it's a NH Marathon FFS!), 31:09.

And now, a little story...

Amrik Kochhar walks into a store to do his weekly grocery shopping. He goes around collecting all his stuff and then goes to pay.
The lady at the cash register goes through the items: One pint of milk; small loaf of bread; 4 x six pack of beer; 6 individual microwave meals; 1 porno mag.
She looks up at him, looks at what he's bought, looks back at him and says, "Tell me, Amrik. You're single, aren't you?"
"How did you know that?" He asked. "Is it because I did the Easy Run of hip3m2 in 0:28, three seconds faster than Ilkka?"
"No." She replied.
"Then is it because I improved my Easy 100% of czg_moon by 35 seconds to get 2:35?"
"No." She replied.
"Well, is it because I took three seconds off of Justin's Easy 100% of earth for a 1:36?"
"No." She replied.
"I'll bet it's because Martin has totally owned my bbelief3 records? Doing the Easy Run one second faster than I did to get 0:47 and the Nightmare Run 2 seconds faster to give him 0:53?"
"No." She replied.
"Then how did you know?"
"Well..." she said,

*drumroll*

"...it's because you're fucking ugly!"

The usual big .dz mirrors are in place here (UK) and here (Denmark) so go grab the bastard and start watching.

Finally, don't forget to check out the profiles every now and then. In the last few days we've had new and revised profiles for Johan, Carl, Ingmar, Stubby and me. That's all for this time, stay tuned for more demos and jokes at Amrik's expense. :-)

Mini contest #1 results are up! - 12:21 AM

Yet another edition of Run Of The Whenever has ended. This time with a new winner taking home his first RotW trophy! This contest also saw the return of Mr.Kurkela which is pretty awesome. The submissions weren't numerous this time, but I was kinda expecting that. Also, check out who advanced in the champion-ladder.

Nolan Loves Everyone! - 3:14 PM

There's been a rather strange thread developing on the Message Board recently about how the original Quake speedrunner and founder/administrator of this site hates a large section of the community. Whether it's true or not I have no idea, and frankly it's none of my business, but I would like to say that from my contact with him I've always found him perfectly affable and helpful and can't believe he'd hold a baseless, long-term grudge against anyone.

Except for Ken, of course. ;-)

Which brings us rather neatly to the latest demos. Amrik Kochhar, The Trinidad Tornado, has taken both of the 100% records on dma1 from Arturo.

  • First he improved the nightmare 100% by 2 seconds to get 0:22.
  • But he couldn't quite match that on Easy skill, only manageing a one second improvement. 0:23.

The next demo comes from the Russian Deathknight himself, Valeriy Burmistrov. He has improved Ilkka's ancient bbelief2 Nightmare Run by one second to give him 0:15. Rumour has it that Jozsef has also done the Easy Run in the same time but you're just going to have to wait for SBBlite2 to see it.

Jonny Andersson, The Uddevalla Whirlwind, has taken another second off of his chessp1 Easy 100% to give him 1:01. Personally, I think he could get under a minute if he was to grenade the zombies in a different way....

Tim Doherty, The Kiwi Cyclone, has filled yet another gap in the Rogue Marathon tables. This time he has totally abandoned his sanity and done the Nightmare 100% through the entire mission pack in the (probably not optimum) time of 78:19. Because of the bizarre reproductive behaviour of the Hell Spawns he has only 1333 kills, 4 less than the combined total for Nolan's NR1 and NR2 demos. For all you students of advanced mathematics out there that would make his total kills 1337. You just know he did it on purpose...

Our first coop for a few weeks comes to us courtesy of the Brothers Stubgaard Full Contact Tag Team. Thomas and Mads-Peter have improved Nolan and Evan's e4m5 NIghtmare 100% by 8 seconds to give them 1:57.

And no update these days would be complete without an ID improvement. This time Timo Nieminen, The Finnish Hurricane, has taken the Easy Run of e2m7 from Robert by one second to give him 0:32. He even suggests a way to improve it but it would take a brave man to try it...

The big download is available as usual from here (UK) and here (Denmark) without Tim's 4 Meg marathon, of here with it.
Please remember that these combined files are only available for a short time after each update so don't come maoning to us that you've tried to download one from several weeks ago and it isn't there anymore because, paradoxically, even though you're right, you'll still be a c^%t.

Enjoy!

!eM pleH - 2:17 PM

As Shakespeare once said...

"Friends, Romans, Countrymen: lend me a horse. For I come here not to bury Ceasar but to frag his biatch arse with some wintery discontent." (Henry XXVII, Act 37, Scene 3)

Food for thought indeed, but I think you'll agree that this site captures the essence of these words once you've seen the latest set of demos.
We have 3 ID records, 2 of which are going straight on to the Unbeatable Runs Table, and 5 other runs of such high quality that you'll think you've died and gone to the afterlife paradise of your choice.

To kick things off, we have three demos on darkages. In the last update Dan Stukanev took the Nightmare Run record, now the other three have also fallen.

  • Stuker turned his attention to the Easy Run and took one second off of Daniel's record to get 0:28.
  • Amrik Kochhar has taken both of the 100% records. First, the Easy from Optic by one second. 1:07.
  • And then the Nightmare, also from Optic, also by one second. 1:09.

Ilkka Kurkela is definitely back. He has reclaimed his Easy Run of hip1m5 from Martin by 4 seconds to get 1:31. This run doesn't contain any spectacular, almost impossible tricks or massive damage boosts, just 101 small monster avoiding and corner cutting tricks (watch out for monster slides over Centroids). Beautiful.

Jozsef Szalontai makes it all look so simple. He has taken 6 seconds off of Justin's seemingly solid Easy Run of earth without even looking like he's trying. 0:53.

Looking back over the last month I am amazed at the number of ID improvements we have seen. And from the rumours I hear it isn't going to stop any time soon.

  • Jozsef has gone fiend boosting, bunny hopping, grenade jumping, fish killing mad in The Palace Of Hate. He did the Nightmare Run in 0:21, one second faster than Markus.
  • And the Easy Run in the seemingly optimum time of 0:19, again one second faster than the recently resurrected Mr Taipale.
  • Markus Taipale has wasted no time in improving the 0:27 of e1m7 he did for the last update. If this isn't optimum I'll eat my keyboard. 0:26.

Once again, a single download of all eight demos is available from here (UK) and here (Denmark). Nolan has been making some heroic efforts in fixing the download servers but from the reaction on the message board I think we will keep on doing this in the future anyway. (Damn! Useful feedback from the message board already! And I thought it was all just chicken choking and insults. :-))

Azure Secrecy - 11:39 AM

Run of the Whenever 'mini' contest #1 is up. Will had the idea to make 'mini' contests while we wait for the real RotW challenges! The only difference between the normal contests and the mini contests, is that only the 10 fastest entrants will be awarded championship points. And a maximum score is therefore logically enough 10 champ points :-)

The goal of this contest is to run through E4M7 (Azure Agony) and get all 9 secrets and exit as fast as possible. Check the Run of the Whenever page for more info and make sure you download the provided progs.

This contest will last for a week (I hope I didn't calculate wrong this time). Deadline is Monday, October 15th, 17:00 EST, 22:00 GMT, 23:00 CET, 2001.

Happy running...

The Return Of... - 4:19 AM

I have no words to describe how I felt when this demo plopped into my mail box. No sooner has the corpse of the monstrous entity Chthon sunk back into the lava whence it rose following Jozsef's 0:28 Nightmare Run of e1m7 when someone comes along and does a 0:27. Who has the skillz to do such a run?
Ladies and gentlemen, we were wondering if we'd ever see him again, and if we did would he still have what it takes, but here he is, Mr Markus Taipale!
Oh, by the way, in case you haven't guessed this is a Must Download.

As if one prodigal son returning to the fold wasn't enough, we have received a demo from the most prolific man in Speed Running history. Apparently he's been locked in a brothel for the last few months, which explains why his hand's a little shakey, but he's back to reclaim his Easy Run of zer1m4 from David Hocking by one second to get 1:26. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Mr Justin "Optic" Fleck!

Our final Comeback King of the night is bunny pioneer, trained killer and all-round nice guy Ilkka Kurkela. (I know he did the cool e4m8 Easy Run a while ago but that was at SpeedCon and doesn't count :-))
He has taken back his Easy 100% of elektra from Carl by 6 seconds to give him 0:55.

I need a drink after that. BRB.

*burp* That's better. Our next demo is yet another ID Nightmare 100% improvement from Thomas Stubgaard. This time he improved his e4m7 record by 10 seconds, just by faster running and frighteningly smooth shotgun work, to get 3:38. Also included in here is a brilliant egg of the two stupidest fish to ever ride a boomstick. Must Download.

Dan Stukanev's runs just keep getting more impressive. This time he has improved Optic's Nightmare Run of darkages by one second to 0:30.

Eh? What's that you say? No link to Optic's demo? Well that's because I mailed David yesterday to point out that he didn't record his demo using the ZerStats patch, he replied this morning with this 1:26 several hours before Optic's arrived. That's rather Countered your Strike back into the heart of SDA, hasn't it, hookah toker? ;-)
But I sincerely hope this doesn't slow him down because he only has another 59 demos to go until he reaches the magic 1000 demo's submitted! And when he gets there I will personally buy him a beer and roll him a foot long doobie. (I've got no idea how I'll get them to him though...)

Naturally, the servers still aren't working so you can get a .dz of all these demos here (UK) and here (Denmark, available after Stubby wakes up tomorrow).
Please don't bitch at us about the servers, we are trying to get them fixed but it's totally out of our hands. We know it's frustrating and annoying but please be patient and try not to be too hard on us.
Otherwise we'll come to your house and kill you! :-)

Goodnight.

The Phallus Grinding Pit. - 10:20 PM

Me again! Didn't have time to post the previous update before I left but I did manage to sneak off at lunchtime and do it. I tried to get Stubby to upload it but he wasn't around this morning. I guess he was busy with his job sexually abusing fish, at least I presume that's what Carp Entry means! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
(It's just occurred to me that unless you have carp fish swimming in the rivers of your country that joke won't actually be very (or at all) funny. For your information the carp, or cyprinus carpio, is a large freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae.)

The first demo of the evening comes to us from the Hungarian Cannonball that is Jozsef Szalontai. He has managed to shave 2 seconds off of his Nightmare Run of phallusy with a couple of route tweaks. The speed he now gets from the first boost has to be seen to be believed, and he still says it's not optimised yet! 0:26

Speaking of Joe, you must head on over to the QdQ Improvements Page and download his e2m3 0:16 nightmare run. Frightening.

Carl Tholin has gone RDE mad and taken the three rd1m1 - Quadrant Six records that he didn't already have. (BTW. Jesse, I'm sure you must have heard this a million times but a quadrant is one part, or area, of four parts. In order to have a 6 it would need to be at least a sextant.)

  • He improved DanielL's Nightmare Run by one second by using, errrr, better bunnies, or something, to get 0:49
  • He beat Ilkka's Easy Run by one second to get 0:47 by having a faster PC. ;-)
  • And finally he destroyed DanielL's Nightmare 100% by 13 seconds 1:38

David Hocking has done the first Zerstorer improvement for quite some time. He beat Bong Boy Fleck's Easy Run of zer1m4 by three seconds to get 1:27. He also includes a nice little egg demo showing what can happen when enforcers act like dumb fu%$ks around the teleporters.

And to complete our demo round-up for this update we take a dive into the pit with Martin Selinus and Jonny Anderson.

  • Marvin The Destroyer managed to hack 2 seconds off of Ingmar's Easy Run to give a very impressive 0:52. But of course he isn't happy with the run because there is some microscopic flaw in it that no one else could even spot. I don't know, he does a run that most people would kill for and all he does is moan moan moan. ;-)
  • "Pretty Balls" Andersson has improved his Easy 100% by 5 seconds to get 2:06.

That's the end of the demos for now. There is one more just come in but I'm not going to post it until you can get to it. By which I mean that the FilePlanet servers are b0rked again. You can't even get to some of the files that were available before. :-/
But believe me this one is a bit of a suprise and well worth the wait....

Mad Vikings and Beach Nightmares. - 2:30 PM

Good morning, Folks. And welcome to the first of today's updates. Why do I say the first? Well, I fell asleep last night before I got around to the update and I didn't want to leave it another full day so I'm doing the first part now, before I go to work and the second half this evening. CAPEESH??

So let's begin by charging straight in to the Haunted Halls, running around like a madman and swinging our axe at everything that moves. Such behaviour could only come from someone of Viking heritage, in this case the Main Dane Thomas Stubgaard.
Stubby has not been idle the last few days. He has improved three of the four single player records on e3m7. (Well, I guess he's just not an "Easy Run" kind of guy).

  • He improved his Easy 100% by one second to get 1:34.
  • He then cranked the game up to Nightmare and took 3 seconds off of Big Poppa Pflug's Run to get 1:07. But I have to say that this should have been a 1:06 or a 1:05. Why do you waste time with the 100 Health secret when there's very little to damage you after that point and you have good health/armour already, dude??? Please go to the message board and write out 100 times "I must not waste time on extraneous health packs towards the end of almost flawless runs." :-)
  • Finally, he improved the hardest Nightmare 100% in the whole game, and he did it in fine style. Watching this makes it look easy, but if you've never tried to do the Nightmare 100% on this map I suggest you give it try. You will be scarred forever. :-) 2:08, a 9 second improvement.

Before I leave I've just got time to tell you about a nice little bit of optimising that Amrik Kochhar has been working on in the last few days. In DanielM's .txt from his Nightmare 100% of beach1 he says that he thinks a two second improvement to 0:21 would be optimum. On Sunday night (my time) Amrik sent in the "optimum" 0:21 but he thought he could do better. On Monday he sent in a 0:20 and thought that was the end of it. But Stubby then suggested to him that maybe he could squeeze in an extra grenade boost too. So off he went and finally came back with this very impressive 0:19. Personally, with a better grenade boost I think he could do an 0:18. ;-)
BTW. Watch out for the last scrag kill. Depending on how you look at it it's either the luckiest or the slickest kill we've seen for a long time.

Stay tuned, more to follow....

Cheat your way through Quake - 1:56 PM

Finally the cheated site has once again been updated with some neat demos for your viewing pleasure. So head on over to the cheated site to see how true cheaters approach the ID maps...

Short but Sweeeet. - 2:22 PM

Hey there Folks. Here's a big YO! right at everyone who's posted to the message board. And an equally big BRING IT ON! to all those who haven't yet. It's proving to be very popular already and not just amongst the SDA regulars. There are posts from people we've never heard from before which is really nice to see.

But you didn't come here to listen to me bang on about how much I love message boards. You came here to see if the latest demos could live up to the high standard of the last few weeks, and the answer is that you can bet your biatch ass they do.

The first two are taken from an upcoming QdQ project called Qd100Qwav. This project (like all QdQ projects) is likely to take some time to finish so the team has decided to post some of the first person scratch runs. For the later levels and the recams you'll just have to wait for the finished production.

  • Jozsef Szalontai improved Thomas's e2m1 Nightmare 100% by 6 seconds to get 1:24. No real new suprises just Joe running unbelievably fast.
  • Thomas Stubgaard improves his Nightmare 100% of e3m2 by 4 seconds. How does me manage to squeeze another 4 whole seconds from this map? By using a trick that requires stupidly accurate timing, even by todays Speed Running standard! DAMN! 1:21.

Do you think you can handle any more ID NH? You don't have a choice with Stubby around. I wish I could see Amrik's face when he sees that his recent e1m4 demo has been owned by 10 seconds. He always said the hardest part of this map was working out how to kill the ogres and fiends by the silver key door. Well, my friend, this 2:12 shows you how it's done. :-)

Amrik Kochhar has added a little swish-swash-jump to the 100% records on dwell. He did the Easy 100% in 1:22 (the only Easy skill demo in this update!), 4 seconds faster than Justin, and the Nightmare 100% in 1:49, 7 seconds faster than Justin.

And of course, no update would be complete without a demo from Uddevalla. Daniel Andersson has improved his Nightmare Run of frbdbase by another second to give him a fine 0:35.

That's all. Now I suggest that you all head back to the Message Board and start a new thread called "Why Richard is the greatest Updater, Speed Runner and Sexual Tyranosaurus of all time."

Message Board - 1:12 AM

Finally SDA has got itself a message board! I for one, thought this would never happen, but here it is at last. Let's all bow and thank the mighty 'Gods' at pq.com for this nice feature, and a huge thanks also goes out to Shambler for his advice on the topics. It would probably have looked like crap without his expertice :)

You can find the message board HERE and also by using the link provided at the top of this website.

ID Demo Frenzy - 11:00 PM

Evening all! A big thanks to all of you that have been mailing and ICQing me over the last week, especially those that have ICQ'd 6 times a day asking when this update was coming out. Please be assured that I wasn't being rude by not replying, it's just that I've been away from home for the last few days doing some fishing and shooting and drinking wit' da boyz.
But I don't blame you for being impatient. Word has got around about some of the awesome demos that have been made in the last week and naturally you're all gagging to see them. I trust you won't be disappointed.

We begin with four demos on the ever popular Beyond Belief maps.

  • In my last update I mentioned that Amrik had missed out on doing a trick on the Easy 100% of bbelief4 which should save him 2 seconds. Within one hour of posting the update he had come back with this 1:50.
  • Aleksander Osipov has decided to do something about Amrik pimping all the BB records. He reclaimed his bbelief5 Easy 100%, improving Amrik by 7 seconds to get 2:13.
  • But that's only a small setback for everyone's favourite Trinidadian (is that right?). He was on his way to bbelief7 to do the demo below whan he decided to stop off at bbelief6 and destroy Big Daddy Pflug's Nightmare Run by 14 seconds to get 1:11.
  • Flushed with his success he went on to beat Attila's thought-to-be-optimised Nightmare Run of bbelief7 by one second to give him an unbeatable 0:06.99937.

As good as those demos were, I think it's time to unveil the EIGHT ID improvements we have for you this week. I can't remember the last time we had eight different ID records broken in one week, and frankly I can't be frigged to trawl back through the news to find out. And even though a lot of these are from people beating their own records (and we all know how often some of these people "beat their own") not one of these is a cheap improvement. All are Must Download. So, in level order they are....

  • Jozsef Szalontai takes a second off of a record that I thought would be here until the end. He beat Markus's e1m7 Nightmare Run by one second by out bunnying the bunny master to get 0:28.
  • Martin Selinus has obviously been letting his bad RJ to the silver door in his Easy 100% of e1m8 play on his mind. He improved his almost flawless run by one second to give him another almost flawless run of 0:52.
  • Thomas Stubgaard also improved his Nightmare 100% of the same map by 2 seconds to give a low-grav, rocket-boosted, quad-jumping, ogre-killing, scrag-scragging 1:19.
  • Jozsef also did a frighteningly good Easy Run of e2m3. He flew through the level in a time of 0:31. Would it be worth grabbing the health the second time the bars hit him in order to throw the second gren at the Death Knight from much closer? Who knows.
  • Also on the same map, Timo Nieminen has improved his already impressive Nightmare 100% by 13 seconds to get 2:23. He made a whole load of tweaks and one fairly big change (throwing a few grens down through the window instead of going back to kill all the outside monsters) but after reading his .txt he may not be satisfied yet. He say's he improved it because he thinks Stubby is after his record but...
  • Thomas was otherwise engaged opening a can of whoop ass on his Nightmare 100% e2m4. He improved it by 4 seconds to get 2:27. I loved the way he missed the DK kill with the 3 grens just before the pent, but found the time to rocket the metal fukka on the way back. :-)
  • That would be enough for some people, but not The Northern NH God. He has further improved his e3m6 Nightmare 100%, this time by a frightening 21 seconds!! 4:12.
  • Tonight's final ID improvemant comes courtesy of Daniel Magnusson. He has nuked his previous Episode 1 Nightmare 100% by 49 seconds to get a damn nice 12:11. Marathons are hell. Nightmare Marathons are hell. 100% Marathons are hell. This is a little taste of heaven, but it could be improved...

Marvin has given us our first Hipnotic improvement for a while. He bunnied and hugged his way around hipdm1 and finally tempted the shambler into a good position to get a 0:23, 2 seconds faster than Ilkka.

And for the last demo, fresh in tonight from Sweden, Jonny Andersson has improved his Easy 100% (despite the fact his .txt says Easy Run) of escape by a whole big second to get a 1:04.

Finally, Stubby has updated the links page with links to Ingmar's Ill Mind Moves and Compet-N, and if you don't know what that is, go take a look.

G'night y'all.

Holy macaroni, I thought this trick was impossible to do.... - 1:49 PM

I just thought I'd mention that Ingmar's site has been updated with a _huge_ amount of trick demos. So head on over to Ill Mind Moves and take a peak at what you might thought was impossible to do in Quake! Among eeey favorites is Timo's (as Ingmar so kindly put it) 'lead-ass boosted slope-rocketjump' to the window above the penta in dm3!

Shambler has also been extremely busy with updates and reviews since he got a new monitor. Plenty of new information and quality reviews as always. Definitely worth a look.

Coop Orgies and Main Danes - 11:00 PM

I'd like to start this update with an apology. During my last update I mentioned a speedrunning competition over at The Cave. Fern has kindly pointed out to me that if read in a certain way with your head at a certain angle then you could think that I infered that Daz actually wrote the DMSP mod. (Basically, because I said he did). However, as everybody knows, it was of course Wouter "Aardappel" van Oortmerssen who wrote it. I hope my mistake hasn't caused too much pain and unhappiness.

We'll start off the demos tonight with a coop orgy by a couple of seriously disturbed Swedes. (See here if you don't believe me). Johan Nilsson and Carl Tholin have produced 8 demos of various qualities for your entertainment.

  • They did the easy 100% of czgtoxic in 1:02. A solid demo and some very poignant philosophcal musing from Johan about maps with no secrets in the .txt.
  • Not wishing to let Jonny hog all the eyesock glory, they utilised a very nice SSG/slope boost to complete the Easy Run in 0:42, 14 seconds better than their previous run, and the Easy 100% in 1:01, a 22 second improvement.
  • They then moved on to rd1m1 and filled the Nightmare 100% slot with a 1:03.
  • And since they were on the Runner's Delight levels they thought that they'd improve DanielH and DanielA's nightmare run of rd1m3. They did it by two seconds to get a very nice 0:32. There'll be fighting in the sauna over this one, I'm sure. :-)
  • Next, they improved their runs on damaul3. They took a second off the Easy Run time for a 0:11, but they took the time to (probably) optimise the Nightmare Run. 2 seconds faster and a nice bit of "total coop" gives an impressive 0:10.
  • Oh yeah, they also did the Easy 100% of elektra in 0:44, 2 seconds faster than Evan and Cameron, but they lost one of the demos, probably the one that uses every cheat in the book. ;-)

Thomas Stubgaard is definitely back in full ID Nightmare 100% mode. This time he has improved his own e3m6 by three seconds to get 4:33. As Thomas says, when it comes to this map there are four words that spring to mind: patience, persistance, monster-cooperation and shotgun skillz.

Amrik Kochhar continues his attempt to own every Beyond Belief record. Some people might say that such a quest is futile (as futile as trying to get him to shut up on ICQ?) but he's not letting that daunt him.

  • First on his hit list was the bbelief4 Easy 100%, which he did in 1:52, improving young Fleck's run by 2 seconds. He did my favourite zombie-armour jump but wussed out of the zombie-emerging-from-water jump from SCBBlite that would have saved another two seconds. *tsch*
  • He then turned his attention to bbelief5, doing the Easy 100% in an impressive 2:20, 4 seconds faster than Alex. There was a heart stopping moment just after he killed the fiend by the main exit when it looked like he came within the width of a flies dick of falling in the lava, but he recovered in fine style.
  • He also improved Robert's Nightmare Run by one second to get 0:23. This includes an all to familiar egg demo of what happens when you mess wit' da feendz.

Finally, I teamed up with The Main Dane to fill the Nightmare 100% hole on the normal gravity e1m8. We tried a few days ago and got a 1:02, but it wasn't very good and Stubby forgot to record it (DOH!) so we tried again last night and we SUCKED. The best we could do was this 1:03.

BTW. I uploaded the demos about two hours ago but they haven't copied across to the mirror sites yet. So if you can't download them now please do try later. I apologise on behalf of PlanetQuake and the GameSpy Network for any inconvenience caused. (I have to say that, If you check my e-mail address above you'll see that I'm now an official corporate wh0re. :-))

Here we go again! - 12:31 AM

ID demos:
  • Jozsef Szalontai improved Martin Selinus' Nightmare Run (normal gravity) of e1m8 by 1 second to get 0:25.
  • But Martin fought back and improved upon Jozsef's with one more second to get 0:24.
  • Martin also owned me by doing the Easy 100% (gravity), 3 seconds faster to get a time of 0:53.
  • And finally we have an awesome demo from Ingmar Poerner who did the Nightmare Run of e2m5, improving Robert's time by 2 seconds and the QdQwav time by 1 second to get 0:37. Make sure you read Ingmar's text file!

    All demos Must Download

Custom demos:
  • Jonny Andersson did the Nightmare Run of escape, 3 seconds faster than his previous demo to get a time of 0:51.
  • Amrik Kochhar followed up on Jonny's eyesock runs. He did the Easy 100% in 1:16, 5 seconds faster than Thomas Bergendorff, and the Nightmare 100% in 1:17, 2 seconds faster than Thomas.
The Quake Done Quick site has been updated with a new release done entirely by Ingmar. His own site Ill Mind Moves, has been launched too. It's about Q1, Q2 and Q3 trick demos, and it also features Quake movies, including his new and highly anticipated Quake redone Quick production. Definitely worth a download as some of the demos are _faster_ than the times in QdQwav!

Peace! - 4:30 PM

It seems that an imminent apocalypse has not managed to slow down any of our contributors.

Jonny Andersson has sent in two sweet eyesock demos.

  • He did the Easy Run in fine style to get 0:46, 2 seconds better than DanielL.
  • And he did some mad bunnying through the Nightmare Run to get 0:49, one second better than Daniel. Jonny, someone that can do a run like this really should have an ID record to their name...

The Russian Optimising Machine that is Valeriy Burmistrov has managed to do the promised Easy 100% of beach1 in 0:24. He did this by finally managing to get all three Ogre kills without breaking step once. Is a 0:23 possible? Rather you than me. :-)

You'd think that after all this time the ID tables could get a well deserved rest. But not with people like Daniel Lindberg And Thomas Stubgaard around.

  • Daniel has produced another amazing demo. This time he cruised the Easy 100% of e3m4 in 1:13, 7 seconds faster than Thomas. There are a number of route tweaks in here but the biggest time saving is a very twisty quadded rocket boost that took me totally by suprise. Must Download.
  • Which brings us to The Northern God we all know as Stubby. He has improved his Nightmare 100% of e2m7 by one solitary second to get 2:49. Now you may think a one second improvement isn't much, but if you've ever tried a Nightmare 100% on this map you will know that it is *ahem* fiendishly difficult to even stay alive, let alone get to the end in a decent time. That said, it isn't one of Thomas's greatest runs, but the inclusion of an egg demo showing one of the funniest bits of monster madness I have ever seen makes this a Must Download.

Thomas Bergendorff tried to resist the lure of speed running but I'm very glad to say he couldn't. He managed to do the Nightmare run of networld in 1:33, a massive 19 seconds faster than DanielM, before he had to get back to his *cough* wrist exercises.

Amrik Kochhar has suprised us all by making a further (and I think final) improvement to his Easy Run Marathon on Beyond Belief. Outstanding running across all the levels gave him a five second improvement of 2:55. Check his .txt file: it reads like an acceptance speech at the Oscars. :-) Must Download.

For those of you that would like to try something a little different, Daz from The DaZ Dranz Level Cave is hosting a SpeedRunning Competition using his DMSP mod, a cool add-on that allows monsters to spawn on deathmatch levels. The results are being decided by two things, speed and the number of cool tricks you can perform during your run. See here for details and don't forget to tell him you heard it on SDA. :-)

I couldn't finish this update without offering our deepest condolences to all victims, families and friends of the hideous terrorist atrocities this week. I also hope that all the scum that plan, commit and support any terrorist action against innocent people for political or religious reasons die slow, horrible deaths. Bastards.

Quality Beyond Belief. - 11:47 PM

Good evening, true believers. And what an evening for quality demo's it has turned out to be. We have improvements on three ID runs; a mad Russian; and 2 Beyond Belief marathons. And not a single table-filler or "oh, I'll improve this later." among them. It's kinda like livin' in Quake Nirvana.

After Axel's cool demo from the previous update I thought we might have to wait a while before we saw any improvement to the e1m8 runs. But Martin Selinus had other ideas. He took some time off from stealing cars and setting fire to reindeer to improve the Nightmare Run by 2 seconds to get 0:27. The next day Jozsef Szalontai sent us a one second improvement on that, but he wasn't quite quick enough (how often do you get to say that about Joe?) because Martin had already submitted a 0:26.
Martin says that his run should be beatable and Joszef called his run "a slow piece of sh1t" so I don't think this is over yet!

Marvin also decided that Peter's incredible Easy Run just wasn't quite good enough. So he spent the evening precision-quad-blasting himself around the map until he finally completed one of the best looking demos I have seen. Unfortunately, I'm feeling sadistic and am going to make you wait for it....

....Ready?....

....0:23. Must Download.

Jozsef has also somehow managed to shave another second off of his e4m8 Nightmare Run. Some crazy running and 2 helpful fiends allowed him to exit in 0:44, one second faster than Ilkka's Easy Run!

Dan Stukanev has submitted another one second improvement to his Nightmare run on houstrps. 0:40. This will be very hard to beat without some incredibly lucky cooperation from the Ogres at the gold key.

Amrik Kochhar keeps the improvements for the Easy 100% Beyond Belief Marathon coming. He took 39 seconds off of his old time in a much slicker looking demo which includes the mid air Zombie-Gren jump and a dubious quality rocket boost. 14:45.

And finally, after precisely 2 months and 7 improvements (4 seconds this time) Amrik has got the Easy Run Marathon down to 3:00. Very few flaws and excellent running throughout make this a Must Download.

Another record! Morfans did the Sunday run of SDA_update in a time of 1:59, 3 seconds faster than his previous record. Must Upload. (Thanks for that one, Amrik). :-)

E1M8 normal gravity tables fixed. - 12:38 AM

We recieved a very neat Nightmare Run on e1m8 from Robert Axelsson in the nice time of 0:29. That's 2 seconds faster than Jonny's tablefiller.

Work? I'd rather be updating. - 4:55 PM

The results are in, the dust has settled, the demos are posted, the monkeys are spanked. But that doesn't mean that the madness has stopped.
Before we turn our attention to the RotW results, let's gaze in awe at the latest harvest of demos.

True to his word, Amrik Kochhar has begun his weekly improvement of the Easy 100% Marathon on Beyond Belief. This week he managed to beat his previous time by 64 seconds to get 15:24. He continues to have problems with the cool zombie-grenade-jump-yellow-armour-secret trick but I'm sure he'll get it one day.

Next, Dan Stukanev continues to own the runs on houstrps. Stuker improved his Nightmare Run by one second to get 0:41, and Justin's Easy Run by the same amount for a 0:34.

The whole rest of this update concerns ID records. Thomas Stubgaard has once again found some time to improve some 100% demos from the original Quake levels. I guess he must have found some fool to help with the updates.

  • He improved Justin's Easy 100% of e2m7 by 3 seconds to 1:30. He knew Amrik was also working on this run so he improved an ID record just to annoy him! Now that's what I call EVIL. :-)
  • He is also now happy enough with his marathon Nightmare 100% through Episode 2 to submit it. This is an amazing run in my opinion. He keeps the aggression level high throughout and even manages to do the "curling bunny rocket slope jump" to the Quad at the end of The Wizard's Manse. Mental play indeed from the NH guru. He managed a time of 17:36, 386(!!!) seconds faster than Justin's record.

With the gradual errosion of Optic's runs over the last few weeks I was shocked to see that he only has 355 current records left on SDA! At this rate he will have none at all by the middle of 2007! Maybe this desperate news will prompt him to stop stabbing the cat and get back to business. ;-)

This brings us to the Run Of The Whenever. It was another storming success with the devil himself, Peter Horvath, taking the Easy Hundred and the ever impressive Daniel Lindberg taking the Nightmare 100%. Add this to Peter's victory in last December's RotW and we have a new map and set of runs to add to the tables.

Ziggurat Gravito - e1m8 with normal gravity.

  • Easy Run. Peter Horvath with 0:24. (Includes a very nice recam). If you've never seen this run, watch it now. It truly rocks.
  • Easy 100%. Peter Horvath with 0:36.
  • Nightmare 100%. Daniel Lindberg with 1:06.
  • Nightmare Run. Jonny Andersson has beaten the crowd to the first gap in the ID tables for quite some time. He has done a 0:31 which I haven't seen myself yet as I'm writing this update at work, but Stubby tells me it's "adequate". This is Jonny's first solo ID record! Way to go Jonny you crazy young Swede.

That's it for now. Keep those demos coming in, send us in a profile if you haven't done so already *COUGH*Daniel*COUGH*, and stay tuned for the next contest, which will be coming.....

*meep* *meep*. It's the Rogue Runner. - 10:07 AM

We'll start off this mornings update (I was going to do it last night but it's such fun to make Amrik wait) with an ID record improvement. Amrik Kochhar has further improved his Nightmare 100% of e1m4 by four seconds to take it down to 2:22. There are very few flaws in this demo. Must Dow... Hmm. Maybe when there are NO flaws. ;-)

On to the other demos.

  • Jozsef Szalontai has upped the stakes in the battle for the Easy Run of czg_moon. He changed the route to the first switch and found a new way to get to the silver key. This enabled him to improve Jonny's run by three seconds to get 0:30. Must Download.
  • Jozsef also managed to shave a second off of his czgtoxic Easy Run with some insane bunnying. 0:26.
  • Dan Stukanev has sent in another impressive nightmare run, this time on houstrps. He improved Justin's record by two seconds to get 0:42. Way to go Dan.
  • Jan Schob has finally recaptured the only run he has ever had on SDA. He did the Nightmare Run of r1m1 in 1:24, two seconds faster than Justin. This demo was actually recorded over a year and a half ago. To find out why he has only just submitted it keep reading...

To finish off we have four marathon runs. Well, three marathons and a project.

  • Tim Doherty has done both the marathon runs on DoE1:Hell's Fortress. He took 10 seconds off of Nolan's Easy Run to get 10:19.
  • He then did the Nightmare Run in 16:52, 350 seconds faster than his previous run. This is much more aggressive than his previous attempt, although me came very close to blowing himself into little pieces on the final level.
  • 16:52 is a good time but 8:44 is better. And that's exactly what Jan "Ghetto" Schob has done... kinda. Jan embarked on what he called Rogue done Roughly (RdR) back at the start of 2000, using QdQstats to record a complete run through DoE on Nightmare skill just like a QdQ run. Unfortunatley he only got as far as the end of the first episode before he ran out of time/enthusiasm (ain't that always the way?), but I've posted the result anyway as it does contain some nice tricks and running.
  • We'll finish this update how we started it. With Mr Kochhar. Amrik has turned his attention to the Easy 100% of Beyond Belief. He has so far improved Nolans previous marathon by 63 seconds to get 16:13 but I doubt it will stay that way for long. Expect several improvements in the next few weeks. :-)

Before I go I'd just like to remind you that the closing date for the current Run Of the Whenever is this Wednesday (5th September). I know Stubby said two weeks but apparently in Denmark Saturday 18th August + 14 days = Wednesday 5th September. Crazy Dane. ;-)

Toxic War and SpeedCon Demos - 3:31 AM

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to tonights edition of SDA update. And boy do we have a packed show for you tonight.

The first demo we have for you is a very nice ID record by Amrik "The Trinidad Tornado" Kochhar. He improved Thomas Bergendorff's Nightmare 100% of e1m4 yesterday evening, and then kept on improving it last night and throughout today, finally settling on 2:26, an 11 second improvement.

The last couple of days have seen a real battle for the Easy 100% of czgtoxic.

  • First Jonny Andersson took 4 seconds off his previous record to get 1:45.
  • Then only minutes later Aleksander Osipov pitched in with a 1:40.
  • Jonny replied with a 1:38.
  • But then Carl Tholin entered the battle with a devastating 1:28.
  • And since he was on the map he also decided to take Tim's Nightmare 100%. He did it in a very convincing manner by 114 seconds(!) to get 2:24. He says he would have improved it further but a woman dragged him off to bed. Unfortunately for him it was his Mother. :-)

Alex also managed to take two seconds off of his rpgsp1 Easy 100% with some nice route tweaks. 2:18.

Next, Dan Stukanev improved his nightmare run on ih1m4 by 4 seconds to get 0:39. Dan must really love this map as he is always "Russian" around on it. :-) (*Groan*. I can't believe I just wrote that).

Jonny was not prepared to let Amrik and Jozsef hog all the glory on czg_moon. He improved Jozsef's run by one second to get 0:33 by not doing the fiend boost and instead just bunnying around the outside to the silver key.

Now we move on to the much anticipated SpeedCon2001 demos. The speedy lads at this year's speedrunning event did some amazingly speedy demos which we've added to SDA's tables:

First up we have an ID record from the bunny pioneer himself. Let's have a big cheer for Mr Ilkka Kurkela. Ilkka is back with style as he improved his Easy Run of e4m8 by 1 second to get 0:45.

Then the chaps embarked on a coop frenzy which saw them p155 all over a lot of MP-Crew records. :-)

  • e1m2 2 Player Nightmare 100% in 0:54 by Ilkka & Alex. 7 seconds faster than the previous time.
  • e1m5 3 Player Easy 100% in 0:26 by Ilkka, Will & Ingmar. One second faster than the MP-Crew.
  • e2m1 3 Player Easy 100% in 0:38 by Ilkka, Alex & Marlo. Improves the MP-Crew record by 2 seconds.
  • e3m5 3 Player Easy Run in 0:28 by Alex, Will & Ingmar. Table filler.
  • e4m1 3 Player Easy 100% in 0:32 by Ilkka, Alex & Will. Improves the MP-Crew record by a second.
  • e4m3 3 Player Easy 100% in 0:48 by Ilkka, Will & Ingmar. Improves the MP-Crew record by 4 seconds.
  • e1m1 4 Player Easy 100% in 0:25 by Ilkka, Alex, Will & Marlo. Improves the MP-Crew record by a second. A very slick run, guys.
  • e1m1 4 Player Nightmare 100% in 0:30 by Alex, Marlo, Ingmar & Will. Improves the MP-Crew record by two seconds.
  • e2m5 4 Player Easy 100% in 0:38 by Ilkka, Marlo Alex & Will. Improves the MP-Crew record by 5 seconds.

Will the Swedes fight back? Only time will tell.

So there you have it Ladies and Gentlemen. The end of another update. Now I'm going to bed because I'm so tired that I'm crying tears of blood, and although it makes quite a pretty pattern on the carpet I'm not convinced that it's good for my overall health.

UPDATE 10:52 AM

Seems like Morfy forgot to post the custom demos from SpeedCon....look above for the most likely reason why he forgot :)

  • bbelief4 2 player Easy Run in 0:18 by Ilkka & Will. Tablefiller.
  • darkages 2 player Easy 100% in 0:48 by Alex & Marlo. Improves the MP-Crew record by 7 seconds.
  • mcomplex 2 player Nightmare 100% in 2:07 by Ilkka & Alex. Tablefiller.
  • bbelief6 3 player Easy Run in 0:29 by Alex, Stefan & Will. Tablefiller.
Enjoy!

CZG lunacy continues - 9:29 AM

We've received another good amount of demos for the two new maps. Let's start with people's efforts on czgtoxic.

  • My favourite player, Tim Doherty, has done the Nightmare 100% in the time of 4:18. There is a good opportunity to improve this time by being suicidally reckless at the first vore.
  • Jonny Andersson, my favourite player, improved Tim's Easy 100% by a big 26 seconds to get 1:49.
  • Amrik Kochhar managed to do a 5 second improvement to his Nightmare Run giving him 0:31. A nice demo from my favourite player.

Did you enjoy those? Well just you wait until you see what people have done on czg_moon.

  • Amrik beat his Easy Run by two seconds for a time of 0:35 using a much slicker fiend boost but a wussier grenade jump.
  • But it was all for nothing because my favourite player, Jozsef Szalontai, came along a few minutes later with a 0:34, one second faster. You're not going to let him get away with that, are you Amrik?
  • Amrik also improved his Nightmare run by a big, fat second to get 0:40.
  • And if there's a hole to fill then you can bet that I'm the man to fill it. I did the Nightmare 100% in 4:06.

Next we have the pleasure of three very good demos from my favourite player, Mads-Peter Stubgaard. He managed to improve three, yes three of his old demos.

  • He beat his Easy 100% on badland1 by 4 seconds giving him 1:51. It will be hard to improve this without a new route, I think.
  • He also managed a 4 second improvement to his 4fiffy3 Easy 100% for a very nice 2:24.
  • And since he was on the map anyway it would have been foolish not to have improved his Nightmare 100%. He did it by 3 seconds to get 2:29.

The final set of demos for this update comes courtesy of my favourite coop duo, Jozsef and Amrik, who took time out from fighting over the CZG levels to do the Nightmare Run of gibplex in 0:25. (0:27) Same route as the Easy Run Joszef did with Jonny last week except this time Amrik got to be his biatch.

That's all from me for now. I'm off to work. Don't forget to get your RotW entries in as the deadline is approaching fast. You can even name them correctly now that Thomas has FINALLY given you the format. ;-P

/me slaps myself for being dumb - 3:40 PM

I totally forgot to mention the naming convention for rotw contest 5.
Demos should be submitted in this format: c5_eh_thomas (easy 100%) and c5_nh_thomas (nightmare 100%).

Filling the tables - 3:11 AM

Moonshot demos:
  • Amrik Kochhar did the Easy Run on czg_moon in a time of 0:37. Unlucky for Jozsef who sent in a 0:42 later than Amrik.
  • Amrik also did an attempt to conquer the Easy 100% in a time of 3:10.
  • And finally he did the Nightmare Run in a time of 0:41.
Biotoxin demos:
  • Amrik improved Shambler's Easy Run on czgtoxic by 4 seconds to get a time of 0:29.
  • Jozsef improved that even further by 2 seconds to get 0:27.
  • Daniel Andersson, David Miller and Thomas Bergendorff all sent in demos after Jozsef had sent his 0:27 :(
  • Johan Nilsson did the Easy 100% in a time of 2:30, but soon after Tim Doherty improved that by 15 seconds to get 2:15.
  • This time it was Jonny Andersson who sent in his demo too late....
  • Amrik did the Nightmare Run in a time of 0:49.
  • Daniel Andersson improved that by 12 seconds to get 0:37, but Amrik struck back and got 0:36.
I know this update is a bit short of words, but that's mostly due to my limited free-time at the moment. I'll let the demos speak for themselves instead :)

Monday, August 27th (2nd update) by Morfans

Jonny helps Jozsef lose his virginity - 1:50 AM

We have a fine crop of demos for you tonight. But first I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my friend and fellow updater Mr Stubgaard for his kind words in the previous update. I would, however, like to point out that everybody knows the only thing he can "slap" is himself. :-)

On with the update...

Amrik Kochhar never ceases to amaze himself with his Beyond Belief demos. :-)

  • He did a very nice Easy 100% through bbelief3 getting 1:32, three seconds faster than Evan.
  • He then somehow managed to beat Martin's Easy Run through bbelief5 by one second to get 0:22. He attributes the improvement in this run to the ogre hurting itself with the splash damage when it grenades him. Personally, though, I think he was just plain lucky. He also included a recam of this demo which shows some rather odd blood splashes.
  • He then went on to improve his Nightmare Run through rpgsp1 getting 0:48, one second faster than his previous.

In case you were wondering about the title of this update, I was refering to Jozsef's coop demo virginity. He teamed up with Jonny to do his first ever 2 player run. They did the easy run of the gibplex in 0:24. (0:26) This is an awesome demonstration of what coop play is all about. Jonny stands there and does nothing except kill a couple of zombies to pass the time while Jozsef exploits the fact he has teamplay 1 and grenades himself all over the map.

Next up we have a real treat from veteran runner Will Marsh. He's done a very impressive Marathon Nightmare Run through the whole of Quake in 23:53, totally destroying Justin's run by 152 seconds. This is a real heart stopper. As he got further and further through I found myself thinking "Surely he's not going to try and..." but he kept on doing very cool tricks all the way through. The whole effect was only slightly spoilt when he screwed up the easy gren jump on E1M4. :-P

Finally, just because nobody else could be bothered to do it I've done a table filler for the Nightmare 100% on rpgsp1. I did it in the chicken-chokingly fast time of 6:35.

Monday, August 27th by Stubby

Wow, finally they got their fingers out their ass and added those two maps! - 12:26 AM

Both maps are by the genius himself also known as CZG. He made both maps for the 2nd 100 brush contest, that means they are fairly small and 'easy' to complete, but they are great fun nevertheless.

  • First map is Biotoxin, reviewed at Shambler's site. Here's CZG's own words of the map "Where toxic waste comes to die, and to be pumped out into earths ecosystem". Shambler did the Easy Run in a time of 0:34.

  • Second map is CZG's moonshot. Here's what he had to say about that one "A blue piece of rock floating in space, sliced, diced and maimed by large steel plates"

Morfy will do the demo update later, so stay tuned for that one, and if Richard is being a jerk or gives any of you guys a hard time, just tell me and I'll slap that bitch a few times! :)

Friday, August 24th (3rd update) by Morfans

*YAWN* - 11:07 AM

*tsch* I am so sick and tired of doing these updates. It seems to be all I ever do these days. Oh well, on with the demos I suppose. ;-)

First up we have three very good demos from Daniel Lindberg. Daniel seems to be on a roll at the moment, and he's decided to improve all the records made by.... Daniel Lindberg.

  • He improved his Easy Run of erotique by one second to get 0:21.
  • Then he beat his Nightmare Run, also by one second to get 0:22.
  • And to finish up he destroyed his Nightmare Run of bnt getting 0:54. An improvement of 17 seconds. (Daniel, see Nolan's comment's below re: proofreading text files.)

Secondly, Basil de Vries has improved his previous appalling Nightmare 100% of coagula3 by 45 seconds to get 3:40. He used the cool trick he found to get to the top level and this time cleared up in a much more organised manner. Okay Basil, in your best Isaac Hayes voice... "Ohhhhhh who's the weapon, that's a death machine with all the monsters?...."

Amrik Kochhar continues his assault on the Beyond Belief records. This time he has improved Robert's Nightmare Run of bbelief3 by one second to get 0:55.

Last but definitely not least, Aleksander Osipov has bitch-slapped DanielH's Easy 100% of rpgsp1. He managed to shave 16 seconds off it to get a time of 2:20. In his .txt Alex calls the map "Penis Demonstration", which I'm guessing is some kind of Finnish civil protest. :-)

That's all for now. But before I go I'd like to thank Stubby for his introduction below, and Nolan for giving me the chance to do these updates. I will almost certainly let you down, but I will be incredibly sorry when I do!

Friday, August 24th (2nd update) by Morfans

Heeeeeeerrrreee's Morfy! - 2:11 AM

Well folks. SDA has got itself a new updater. That means all your fine demos get to be posted and (if necessary) reviewed/criticised by me. Now, for those that don't know me, I'm basically a Nightmare 100% speed runner, and not a particularly good one at that. But I've watched pretty much every demo that's been posted since 1998, so I know quality when I see it and I know rubbish when I see it, and I'll be more than happy to tell you that you suck. :-)

So it's with no small sense of annoyance that the first demo I've got to post is perhaps the best demo I have ever seen. Daniel Lindberg has done the Easy 100% of e2m4 in 1:21, 14 seconds faster than Carl's demo. A very pure piece of speed running indeed.

Stay tuned for all the remaining demos and also two new very cool maps. :-)

Friday, August 24th by Stubby

This is serious shit... - 2:00 AM

*ATTENTION* We've 'hired' a new updater for SDA! Some of you might know him as the oldest speedrunner in town, some of you might know him by the nick of Morfans, whilst some of you might know him as the guy who likes to rip off turkey heads!....Everybody please welcome *drum roll* Richard 'morfans' Skidmore *drum roll fades out*
Hopefully this will give us more interaction on SDA, and it will certainly give me more free time to own the remaining id NH records :P

On another note, I was the lucky one who visited SDA as #250.000, but irony has it that, just when I was about to take a screenshot my computer crashed big time!! Ok, I'll admit that I hit the reload button a 'few' times, but I'm pretty convinced others did that too, right? :)

*Spoiler* Richard will make an appearance on SDA soon and he has a big surprise for everyone *Spoiler*

Ziggurat Gravito - 11:03 AM

Run Of The Whenever contest #5 is up. This time we bring you through the 'joys' of E1M8 (Ziggurat Vertigo). Most of you probably remember this as the most annoying map in Quake because of the gravity. Well, this time we give you the chance to do both the Easy 100% and Nightmare 100% for this map with normal gravity!!! There will be a maximum of 40 championship points, 20 for each discipline and as a bonus, this version of the map will also get added to SDA's archives after the contest has ended. So if you've always dreamed of having an id record here's your chance to get one fair and square. But of course you won't get it without a fight as you have to do it faster than everybody else, so I expect the competition to be hard and merciless. Once again I made this contest run for 14 days because of the diffculty of the contest! So grab your rocket launcher and gib those pissy monsters to hell without having to worry about flying halfway through the map before landing, just to find out a Shambler has sneaked up behind you, ready to rape your sorry ass.
Send all contest demos to stubgaard.

Let's be brutally honest! - 1:47 AM

This should be fun...
  • Martin did the Nightmare 100% of e2m2 in 1:23, three seconds fater than Carl. My god does this demo rock some serious shit! I think he should have put in a quad grenade boost though...
  • Robert and Rickard did an Easy Run of rpgsp1 in 0:29, eight seconds faster than Jozsef's sp demo.... hmm.
  • They also did the Nightmare Run in 0:39, ten seconds faster than Amrik's sp demo.... hmm^2. Apparently they weren't sure what they did though, because their text file had said "easy" in once place and "nightmare" in another!
  • Valeriy improved his Easy 100% of beach1 by one second to get 0:25. Damn if this map ain't the biggest piece of shit we have listed, but its... unique... layout allows for some nice demos, at least. He promises that a 0:24 is coming later too.
  • Basil did the Nightmare 100% of coagula3 in 4:25, 22 seconds faster than Richard. But maybe its actually 4:26 because that's what basil named the files? Or did he really do an easy 100% of the map in 2:27 because that's what his text file had said? Nope, it really is an NH in 4:25. He did a cool new trick that will save loads of time. But because he didn't pick up the freaking lightning gun, the demo basically sucks!
  • Amrik improved Ilkka's Easy Run of bbelief3 by one second to get 0:48. He thinks he's special because he beat one of Ilkka's demos from mid '99 it seems. He also tried to get us not to post this demo, but he does say right in the text file that "...it is pointless not to releases [this]", so here it is!
Proofread your damn text files!

P.S. New RotW and new maps will be added soon.

  • Amrik Kochhar improved his Nightmare Run by yet another 4 seconds to get 0:49.
  • Daniel Hansson improved Matt's Nightmare 100% of coagula3 (fixed the broken link) by 33 seconds to get 5:16.

So have a little more patience and you'll be rewarded with a huge variety of mad-coops, some secret projects and a hilarious deathmatch mod....oh and not to mention all the drunken SpeedCon pics :)

People have been wondering where to get the template for the player profiles....you can grab the template here.

Hey look, it's a giant penis! - 5:07 AM

Yes, I freely admit that I'm a lazy bum. But I'm also just plain not spending as much time in front of my computer as I used to.

Anyway, I couldn't resist adding this map: rpgsp1 - Penile Devastation by R.P.G.

Good old [Mr] Shambler did the easy run of it in a nice time of 0:48, when he reviewed it on his site.

Enjoy ;-)

Nolan is lazy... - 6:05 PM

...and why you ask? Because he haven't added the map which he was supposed to several days ago! :P

  • Hannu Kankaanpaa improved his Nightmare Run by 2 seconds to get 0:46, but Amrik improved that by 1 second to get 0:45.

The end of an era - 2:11 PM

It's over, it's done, and as far as I can tell, the people who attended SC2K1 had a great time, at least they seemed to be getting less and less coherent on ICQ throughout the week :) I just got a note from Ingmar, here's the last words of SC2K1:
Today was the last day of SpeedCon 2K+1, which means return to dimension real life for everyone of us :/ Ilkka and Alex were the first ones to leave in the early morning, followed by a totally wasted Will, and me (Ingmar) beeing the very last one, since I missed my first train :P

Demos will be posted soon (I guess), and except for a last Nightmare 100% through Marlos's devastated house, there's nothing left to do except... getting a bed and some SLEEP (and no more pizzas, please ;)

Contest 4 results are up! - 8:24 PM

Mr.Horvath does it again! He managed to snatch the victory from Jozsef who placed second and is only 3 championship points behind Peter now, and Daniel isn't far away from the championship title either.... Head one over to the Run Of The Whenever page and download the demos. Check out the champion-ladder here.

A note about coagula3 - 7:15 AM

Stubby may have done the cheap runs in coagula3 in 4 seconds, but we're doing "long way" runs on it like on a few other maps. A demo was already sent for it but we hadn't realized something about the map and therefore it wasn't quite what we were looking for. Basically we want you to go all the way up to the top level, push the three buttons that lower the barrier to the last button, push it, and then exit. Pretend that you cant access the platform with the exit-opening button on it until you push other three... basically like it was intended. Enjoy!

BTW dont look for me this Wednesday through Friday... I won't be around.

Monday, July 30th by Stubby

I just love that track! - 2:18 AM

Woohoo, SpeedCon 2 is well underway, and despite a few er, "teething problems" with the computers we're having a good time. We spent the afternoon footbagging, relaxing in Fab's pool and watching violent films (like the video from last year FAB recorded :P - ingmar).

Look out for a few awful pictures coming in soon :) Hope we get these small technical issues fixed 2morrow.

Btw: Justin you would have liked Marlo's and FAB's friends for some obvious reasons =)

A note about Quake exe files - 6:00 AM

I said it once on the news here, but it never managed to make its way anywhere else on the page (added to FAQ now), and of course it long scrolled off into the oldnews. Please *do not* use any Quake exe files that were built from the released source code. That is, use *only* exe files supplied by id software. I have evidence that some of the user made exe files do some meddling with how time in the game works. Some of them give you an extra 0.015 seconds or so at the start. Now you're going to think "big fucking deal, wtf is that?" and to that I say that I dont know what else these exes are doing. Maybe they're letting you see through walls to find monsters, or speeding your bunnies up. *I dont know*... and i'm not accusing anyone of cheating in this way... I just need to try to make sure it never happens.

I wanted to make a quake exe for windows/linux/mac for speedrunning that I would force people to use, but I never had the time or the will to actually do it. If somebody wants to volunteer to do something like that (with my supervision) then please do! :-) Until then I just have to emphasize that I dont want people using modified exe files!

Feel free to bitch at me about this, but it won't change my view. Having a site where players compete for records requires rules, and somebody has to do the best he can to enforce them.

It's that time of year again - 6:49 PM

Which can only mean one thing...Speedcon! Yes, a second Speedcon meeting has just started. Ilkka and Alex are arriving as I speak at Marlo's house in Germany where it is being held this year. I'm off tomorrow morning, and will be arriving about the same time as Stefan and Fab. Ingmar is making an appearance too. It's a slightly lower rollcall than last year's, with a few unfortunate last minute drop outs, but we'll be doing our best to bring you lots of Mad Coops, lots of drunken speedrunners, a new project or two, and maybe even a little extra. See you guys on the 2nd of August, and look out for the SC2 page when it's up!

What's that noise? - 4:18 PM

It's the noise of monsters being gibbed at the cheated site. This time we have a whooping Nightmare 100% coop through e4m3 in 1:45 using the newly discovered Lightning-Gun trick!!. Valeriy Burmistrov did his first cheated demos on the End map, while Jonny Andersson did some tablefillers.

The QuakeExpo site is up and running in high gear.

Also check out Shambler's rant about Quake 1 single player.

Contest 3 results are up! - 2:17 AM

OMG! Mr.Horvath managed to snatch the victory in both disciplines, but Jozsef kept playing until the very last minutes of the deadline in which he sent a demo only 0.002 seconds slower than Peter's run!!! It was only a matter of ONE friggin' frame that parted 1st and 2nd place!!!.

Check out the results and download the entries here, and check out the championship ladder here.

I really hope the next RotW will get as much attention as this one. I loved watching all the demos and it's great with such good competition.

And remember that Deadline is July 10th CET.

Championships - 5:35 PM

I'm proud to announce the first Championships on SDA ever. The RotW contests will go on as normal, just with the slight difference that you can earn championship points as well.
The new Run Of The Whenever is on a map done by Speedy. You can either do it as a Run, or as a 100%. A max of 20 championship points will be given for each discipline (you get 20 points for 1st, 19 for 2nd etc. down to 1 for 20th), so you better polish your speedrunning skillz as the competition will be hard and mean!
Note: Great vengeance and fury will be struck upon those who cheat!! Now you're warned!

  • Daniel Hansson improved Justin's Easy Run of a2d2 by 2 seconds to get 0:43. (Forgot to mention it in the news last time)

A 2nd map... - 6:33 AM

It's a slow trickle of maps...cuz I'm still too lazy to post more than that at once. The newest map to be added to the glorious tables of SDA is czg100b - Rabbit in my Deadlight by CZG, of course.

To start things off I did the nightmare 100% in a lousy time of 2:18. Somebody beat it, please!

Special notice to the staff of PlanetQuake who made SDA the Site of the Day today. That's the 5th time in 3 years :-)

The results are up! - 3:29 PM

Run of the Whenever results are up. This contest goes down in history as the RotW contest with the most participants! The competition for 1st place was really tough. Be sure to check it out.
There will be a new RotW contest very soon, but this time with a little twist/surprise. I can tell you as much as it marks a new beginning for future RotW's. Stay tuned for more :)

Hail to id Software, we salute you! - 10:53 PM

The day has finally arrived that Quake turned 5 years!! There's a cool interview with John Romero and Tim Willits up at Methos Quake. The article even mentions some of the QdQ projects as a part of the most important events in Quake's history....Kewl!! :)

On another note there's a new speedmapping contest going on at Quake Speed Mapping. Part of the goal is to build speedrunning maps that we may use for future RotW contests on SDA! (be sure to read the "rules" on how to make a good speedrunning map). So if you're a skilled mapper and would like to see your map on SDA, then this is definitely worth a look.

UPDATE 11:19 PM
Also praise to Filip Söderholm with setting up a mirror for all of SDA's demos! Links to the demos on his server, in Sweden, now show up in all the demo.pl links.

Are you a cheater? - 1:57 PM

In case you are head on over to the cheated site. There's a big fat update with loads of 100% demos!

Thursday, June 21st by Nolan

A few things - 5:35 AM

sda@pq is working again, so please use that for sending normal demos again. ROTW demos should go to Stub only...

Those of you using DOS Quake probably wonder what to do about fatal-error.bsp. If you name it fatal-er.bsp then you can watch all the demos. But that means if you record then people with it named fatal-error need to have two copies. *sigh*... lets just say you might have to rename your bsp to watch demos.

Run of the Whenever - 7:56 PM

Run of the Week...ehem!...of the Whenever is back with a vengeance!. The object is to get to the exit as fast as possible either as a single player or as a 2 player coop, using this map. You're welcome to do mad-coops as well, but they won't count as an entry, but I'll put them in the final package as eggs. All your demos must be recorded using the latest version of QdQStats and sent to me. Time to sharpen your bunny skillz folks :)

Results will be posted June 27th

Onward to the Army - 11:44 PM

Well the time has come for me to leave to the Army. I'm going to boot camp for the entire summer where I will get my ass beat into a fine young soldier! Just wanted to let everyone know that I am leaving Mr. Stub's in charge of my page and to direct all cheated/naked demos to stubgaard. Thank you for always being nice to me everyone, and if I was ever a dick to you on ICQ it's just because I'm usually working on something when I'm online :) Bye Nolan, continue to own those Zelda RPG's for me (I just beat Seasons).

Fatal-Error - 8:54 PM

Fatal-error is literally what has happened to the planetquake mail server. We get multiple copies of the emails we've been sent, so until the problem has been fixed, please send your demos using this link.

We've recieved quite a few entried for Fatal-Error, but only two people managed to reach the 8 second barrier.

  • Daniel Andersson improved Nolan's Easy Run of fatal-error by 2 seconds to get 0:08 using a completely NEW route! Well actually this route is the old one, coz Daniel did his demo one month ago :)
  • Valeriy Burmistrov did the Nightmare Run in 0:08 too, using Nolan's route! Is there anyone crazy enough to try for 0:07?
  • Daniel Hansson improved Justin's Easy Run of r1m1 by 1 second to get 1:16.
  • Filip Söderholm managed to improve Fabian's Easy Run of doom2_08 by 1 second to get 1:32.
  • Carl-Johan Andersson did the Easy Run of darknite 1 second faster than Justin to get a time of 1:28.
  • He also did the Nightmare Run 4 seconds faster than Marlo to get 1:29.

It's a real map - 10:20 AM

Assholes aside, there were people who submitted valid votes for the poll, and It's been a slow process because of all my game addictions but now I can add a real map.

Yes, just one.

Yes there will be more later.

No, Stubby doesn't know what they are or when they'll be added; stop bugging him.

Don't even think about bugging me.

I expect high quality demos :-)

The map is fatal-error, reviewed at shambler's site. Download it here, or if you're feeling lucky, on fileplanet.

Since the author made a little boo-boo in the design, the run on this map is pretty quick.... I did the easy run in 10 seconds.

That's all...

Where the fuck did the summer go? - 6:54 PM

What the fuck is this!?!? Isn't it supposed to be all sunny and warm in the middle of June?? It's so friggin' cold here in denmark that my balls has shrunk to half the normal size! I wanna see boobs, I wanna see thongs, I wanna see naked chicks god dammit!! Ok ok, I'll stop rambling about girls now....errr, for now :)

Single player demos:

  • First up we have an awesome demo from Jozsef Szalontai also knows as the Hungarian bunny machine. He totally owned my Easy 100% of e4m8 which he did 53 seconds faster to get a time of 2:58!! THIS IS A MUST DOWNLOAD
  • Next up we have another outstanding demo done by Daniel Hansson. He wasted Jesse's old Easy Run of mexx2 by 1 second to get 0:09. It couldn't be closer to 10 seconds as the time he got was a 0:09.99!
  • Jonny Andersson improved Arturo's Easy Run of mexx8b by 1 second to get a time of 0:20.
  • Daniel Hansson decided that the Nightmare Run had to be improved too, so he owned Marlo by 2 seconds to get 0:20. This is the same time as the easy run.
  • Jonny wasn't satisfied with his previous Easy 100% of pit, so he tried some more and came up with a 5 second improvement to get a time of 2:17. *spoiler* There's still a trick which no-one has used yet, but it only works in a Nightmare Run. I can tell you as much as it includes alot of Vore-balls! *spoiler*
  • Daniel Andersson wanted to get both runs on evildead, so he improved Justin's Nightmare Run by 4 seconds to get 1:01.
Coop demos:
  • DanielH/Jonny/KimSvea did the Nightmare 100% of e1m1 in a time of 0:34 (1:05) Table filler.
  • DanielH/Jonny did the Nightmare 100% of e1m1 in a time of 0:42. This is 2 seconds faster than their previous record.
  • DanielH/Jonny did the Easy Run of e3m7 in a time of 0:43 (0:44) Table filler.
  • Robert/Rickard/Peter did the Nightmare Run of rd1m2 in a time of 0:39 (0:54) Table filler.

  • DanielA/Fredrik Eckers did the Easy Run of evildead in a time of 0:42 (0:46) Table filler.

FilePlanet Sucks! - 7:08 PM

In case you can't download the demos don't blame us. The new FilePlanet system truly sucks.
Does anyone have a 1GB ftp server they would like to share with us?!?! :)
  • I did the Nightmare 100% of e2m5, 10 seconds faster than my previous record to get a time of 2:09. Still the same route and same amount of mistakes! Oh it's also 10 seconds faster than Qd100Qr :)
  • Newcomer Carl-Johan Andersson improved Marlo's Nightmare Run of discord by 1 second to get 0:52. This is certainly a very nice demo for a newcomer.
  • Daniel Hansson improved his Easy 100% of frbdbase by 2 more seconds to get 0:45.
  • Jonny Andersson improved Jouzas' Easy Run of escape by 1 second to get a time of 0:49.

  • In my last update I forgot to mention Daniel Andersson's Nightmare Run through czg01 which he improved by 1 more second to get 1:53. Sorry Daniel, it won't happen again....
  • Daniel also did the Easy Run of evildead in a time of 0:46, 2 seconds faster than Fabian.
  • Daniel Hansson and Jonny Andersson keeps improving their Easy 100% of e1m1. This time they did it in 0:31 (0:54), 1 second faster than their previous record. Optimum time?
  • Martin Thorning and Filip Söderholm improved Marlo and Fabian's Easy 100% of e3m5, which they did 2 seconds faster to get 1:10 (1:32)

The results are in! - 6:05 AM

I think my little poll for what maps to add has been going on long enough now, don't you? I've looked at the votes and I've decided what needs added. The clear winner of the poll was ... *drum roll*:

DM3!

In fact, it blew away everything else in the poll by so much, that I think that's the only thing that needs added for the next two months, at least! To get things started, I did the easy run in a time of 0:57. Make sure you check it out... if you can download it that is (stupid fileplanet).

Hey Ho Let's Go - 5:48 PM

Here's the rest of the demos as promised:

We kick it off with two very cool id demos:

  • Daniel Magnusson improved upon his Easy 100% of e3m6 which he did 5 seconds faster to get 2:08. This demo really rocks. It's soooo hard to get all the monsters to cooperate on this map. Check the egg demo for a Houdini trick done by one of the Ogres!
  • Martin Selinus did what I knew he was capable of doing. He improved his Easy Run (the long way) of e2m1 by 1 second to get 0:43. He gained the few missing tenths of seconds by getting a Grunt boost!
Non id demos:
  • Basil de Vries improved his Easy Run of alk07 by 3 more seconds to get 1:01.
  • Daniel Hansson never stops playing czg07a. He improved his Easy Run by 2 seconds to get 1:20.
  • Jonny Andersson improved his Easy 100% of empire, by 9 seconds to get 2:50.
  • Jonny also improved his Nightmare Run of dxm by 5 seconds to get 0:10.
  • But he didn't stop there. He also did the Nightmare Run of escape, 2 seconds faster to get 0:54.
  • Daniel Magnusson improved Basil's Nightmare Run of real by 5 seconds to get 1:10.
Coops:
  • DanielH/JonnyA/DanielA and new guy KimSvea did the Nightmare 100% of e1m1 in a time of 0:32 (1:05) New to the tables.
  • DanielH/JonnyA/DanielA/KimSvea did the Easy 100% of pit in a time of 1:10 (2:22) New to the tables.
  • DanielA/JonnyA/DanielA did the Easy 100% of czg07a in a time of 2:34 (4:30) New to the tables.
  • JonnyA/KimSvea and yet another new guy named Damien did the Nightmare 100% of escape in a time of 1:22 (1:34) New to the tables.
  • DanielH/DanielA did the Easy Run of pse3 in a time of 0:18 (0:23) New to the tables.
  • DanielH/JonnyA did the Easy 100% of e1m2 1 second faster than Marlo and Fabian to get a time of 0:37 (0:51)
  • DanielH/JonnyA did the Easy 100% of e2m3 7 seconds faster than themselves to get a time of 1:01 (1:17)
  • DanielH/JonnyA did the Easy Run of e3m5 1 second faster than Peter and Atilla to get a time of 0:34 (0:58)

Are you HUNGARY for demos? - 6:05 PM

Jozsef Szalontai the Hungarian bunny machine shows that he's capable of doing 100%'s as well as cool runs. He improved my Easy 100% of e2m6 by 33 seconds to get a blistering time of 3:38 !!!! I knew this was possible, but as my bunnies suck ass I'm glad someone else finally had the guts to try it out. This demo requires loony bunny skills, alot of patience and, alot of monster cooperation, loony bunny skills, vore-balls jumping skills, fish quad-jumping skills (err NOT), oh and did i mention loony bunny skills?

To show you how much speed skillz have developed over the years consider this: Jozsef has just done the Easy 100% in 3:38. The first "Easy Run" on this level was done by Justin (september 1997) in the blistering time of 4:59. A minute and a half slower!!!!! Now frankly I could do the Easy Run in less than five minutes, blindfolded and only using my dick. It's a shame that Justin's original demo is now lost to posterity :)

Other demos that has been sent to SDA will be posted soon....

Free Duff, Viva Life - 12:19 AM

  • Martin Selinus never stops playing id maps. He improved Jozsef's Easy Run "the long way" of e2m1 by 1 second to get a time of 0:44. Martin says he will continue to try for 0:43, but he's not sure if he can pull it off! I know he can :)
  • Martin went to a demo-party where he hooked up with Robin Kuivinen to do the Easy 100% of e3m2, improving their previous record by 1 second to get 0:34.
  • Finally me and my speedrunning brother were able to do our first coop together. We picked e3m3 as we though it would be easy as pie, but we were wrong. We got a time of 0:49 though, 3 seconds faster than Marlo and Fabian!
  • Amrik Kocchar improved Arturo's Easy Run of dxm by 1 second to get a time of 0:13. He has returned from Markus bunny-hopping school with a vengeance he says. PhEaR him...
  • Someone finally took the liberty to improve the least favorite map on sda! Basil de Vries did the Easy Run of alk07 in 1:04, 13 seconds faster than Nolan.

More haste less speed! - 9:26 PM

It seems like some people had some difficulties recognizing the real name of the maps, so from now on they'll be posted with their bsp name instead.
  • Martin Selinus improved Ingmar's Nightmare Run of e1m5 by 1 second to get 0:19. Lotsa luck is needed to pass all those monsters. MUST DOWNLOAD
  • I added to the fight over e2m5. I improved Nolan's Nightmare 100% by 5 seconds to get a time of 2:19. New route, new tricks, shitty playing, but still worth a look :)
  • Valeriy Burmistrov shaved another second off his Easy 100% of bb7 to get 0:36. Valeriy is a mad optimizer. He's never satisfied until he knows the time is optimum.
  • Jonny Andersson improved his Nightmare Run of esc by 1 second to get 0:56. Funny map.
  • Jonny also improved Stefan's Nightmare Run of dxm by 5 seconds to get 0:15. I've always liked the trick used in this map. I wonder if it's possible to do without shooting that horde of monsters first.

Attack of the Swedes Part II - 1:35 AM

Holy cow, these guys must be on some kind of "speed" :)
  • Daniel Hansson improved his Easy Run of Research Facility, by 4 seconds to get 1:40. No special tricks in this, mostly bunnies throughout the whole demo.
  • Daniel improved his Easy Run of Core Decomposed, by 1 more second to get 1:22.
  • Daniel improved his Easy 100% as well to get 4:30, 2 seconds faster than Marlo Galinski.
  • And finally he managed to improve his Easy 100% of Subgud, improving his previous record by another 6 seconds to get 4:10.
But the fun doesn't stop here:
  • Daniel and Jonny improved their Easy 100% of Subgud, by 36 seconds to get a time of 2:30. Taken from their txt file they weren't too happy about their previous record from last update :)
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel did the Easy Run in a time of 0:35, only one second faster than the single player time! Seems like it should have been faster :o)
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel also snatched the Easy 100% in a time of 2:20, which is 10 seconds faster than the two player record.

Do you hate these headlines? - 12:12 PM

Let's kick it off with the single player demos:
  • Stefan Schwoon has done his first demo in four months! He improved Andrey's Nightmare 100% of The Old City, by 261 seconds to get 9:05. Lotsa monster cooperation is needed in this map.
  • Valeriy Burmistrov improved his Easy 100% of The Temple, by one more second to get a time of 0:14. Dare we say that this is optimum?
  • Daniel Hansson improved his Easy 100% of Badlands 2, by 2 seconds to get a time of 2:54.
  • Daniel also improved his Nightmare Run of Azurette, by another 2 seconds to get a time of 0:44.
  • Daniel Andersson improved his Nightmare Run of The Forbidden Base, by 1 more second to get a time of 0:36.
We have a majority of coops in this update:
  • Daniel and Daniel did the Easy Run of Azurette in a time of 0:38 (0:45) table filler
  • Daniel and Daniel did the Nightmare Run of The Forbidden Base in a time of 0:27 (0:37) table filler.
  • They also did the Nightmare 100% to get a time of 0:34 (0:48) table filler
  • Daniel and Jonny did the Easy 100% of Subgud in a time of 3:06 (4:16) table filler
  • Daniel and Jonny did the Nightmare 100% of e1m1 in a time of 0:44, 1 second faster than their previous record.
  • Daniel and Jonny did the Easy 100% of e2m3 in a time of 1:08, 5 seconds faster than Marlo and Fabian.
  • Evan and Justin did the Easy 100% of Phantasmal Garrison in a time of 1:36 (2:09) table filler
And we even have four mad-coops for your viewing pleasure:
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel did the Easy 100% of e1m1 to get a time of 0:27, 1 second faster than Marlo/Fabian/Stefan
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel did the Easy 100% of e1m2 to get a time of 0:31, 1 second faster than Carl/Mark/Jonny
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel did the Easy 100% of e1m3 to get a time of 0:37, 1 second faster than Carl/Mark/Jonny
  • Daniel/Jonny/Daniel did the Easy 100% of e3m3 to get a time of 0:42, 7 seconds faster than Gunnar/Evan/Justin
Let's finish this update off with a cool marathon:
  • Marlo Galinski showed off some of his skills and improved his Easy 100% through Episode2, by 36 seconds to get a time of 12:00.

Do you hate these maps? - 9:40 AM

Ever since SDA started adding new maps again, the selection of the maps has basically been my decision, even though I usually got suggestions from people. Lately I haven't had time to look at the new maps and since I generally ignore any inidividual recommendations, I decided to allow everyone to vote for the maps they want to see here.

So if there's a map that you want to speedrun, or just that you want to see cool demos on, then go vote for it! Just enter the bsp/zip name and I'll ask for download locations later. You can vote for more than one map if you like too, just dont abuse the system, ok? The length of this poll is undetermined... depends on how much response there is.

Suck me sideways - 10:44 PM

Just to let you few but dedicated 'Nudists' that my page has been updated with the competition between Martin and Jozsef heating up and of course "Maximum Fleckage". I'm in the process of redesigning my entire site as it obviously needs some work on the update layout. Finally, if you want a good metal/industrial song then get Disobedience by KMFDM (excellent German band).

Faster than a speeding bullet - 4:18 PM

This update is packed with cool demos. Do yourself a favor and download them all, you won't be disappointed...
  • Martin Selinus went nuts and improved Markus' Nightmare Run of e4m3 by 1 second to get 0:39. Most of the monsters somehow killed themselves at the end making it easier for Martin to survive. This is a must download
  • He improved his Easy 100% of e2m2 as well, improving his current record by 4 seconds to get 0:55. Holy crap, I thought 0:58 would be optimum!
  • Jozsef Szalontai went nuts too and improved Martin's Easy Run of The Alpha Project by 2 seconds to get 0:07. he used an awesome barrel jump to achieve this time. Another must download
  • Jozsef improved his Nightmare Run of Cult by another second to get 0:21. Nice Ogre-GJ boost!
  • Newcomer Dan Stukanev made his first speedrun in the form of an Easy Run through The Ruiner's Revulsion in the time of 0:21, 1 second faster than Josh Zayas.
  • Hannu Kankaanpaa keeps improving the Nightmare 100% on The Pit. This time he managed to beat his record by 14 seconds to get 2:42.

Attack of the Swedes - 6:47 PM

Daniel and Jonny has done a huge amount of demos in the last couple of days:

  • He improved Arturo's Easy Run of The Forbidden Base by 3 seconds to get 0:33.
  • He couldn't leave the Easy 100% untouched so he improved that as well to get 0:47, 2 seconds faster than Justin.
  • Daniel hooked up with Jonny to do the Easy Run in a time of 0:29.
  • And as a little bonus they did the Easy 100% too in a time of 0:35.
  • They did an awesome run on Episode1 beating Sergi and Jordi's Easy Run by 1 second to get 2:24. They even got 0:21 in e1m1...!! Be sure to check this one out.
  • They did the first ever coop on The Gibplex. Easy 100% in a time of 0:52. You can only get 27/28 monsters in this map.
  • Attila's speedrunning map got abused too. They improved Evan & Cameron's Easy 100% of The Pit by 2 seconds to get 1:21.
  • They went on and on and did the Nightmare 100% as well to get 2:16.
This update is not entirely by the two swedes as Justin managed to sneak in a demo too.

  • Nolan Pflug totally owned Tim Doherty as he improved Tim's Nightmare 100% Marathon of Hell's Fortress by 592 seconds to get 26:55. Seems like Nolan doesn't know the word cautious :)
  • He managed to beat Justin's r1m1 by 3 seconds while he did that marathon. He got a time of 3:14.
P.S. The Gamespy server is extremely slow at times. I crosschecked the links and they work just fine, so you just have to keep trying.

Greedy For Speed - 2:03 PM

Justin is back to his usual standards....I'm glad he got that new desk of his :)
  • He improved his own Easy 100% of Cult by 5 seconds to get 0:47. It takes exactly 11 ssg shots to kill a Shambler.
  • He improved Fabian's Nightmare 100% as well to get 0:47, 2 seconds faster. Same time as the easy demo.
  • He improved his old '98 Easy 100% of Horror Erotique by 4 seconds to get 1:25. "Horror Erotique" hmmmmm....weird name for a map!!
  • He wasn't satisfied with his Nightmare Run of The Outer Regions, so he improved it by 16 seconds to get 2:41.
  • He improved Jonny's Easy 100% of Escape by 1 second to get 1:06. Justin seems to be a bit irritated towards the monsters on this map.
  • And finally he improved Andrey's Nightmare 100% Marathon of Phantasmal Garrison by 243 seconds to get 15:48. Look below for Andrey's demo ->
Demos by others:
  • Martin Selinus improved his Easy Run of Phantasmal Garrison by one more second to get 0:23. That barrel jump really kicks ass....GET IT NOW!
  • Nolan Pflug improved my Nightmare 100% of e2m5 by 4 seconds to get 2:24. Beware Nolan....I'm gonna strike back!!
  • Jonny Andersson improved his Nightmare 100% of The Pit by 148 seconds to get 4:03. You finally figured out where the keys were located huh? :)
  • As mentioned above Andrey did the Nightmare 100% Marathon of Phantasmal Garrison, to get a time of 19:51. 1 second faster than Richard...that's not a whole lot for a marathon :)
  • He filled out the missing spot in the PG tables as he did the Nightmare Marathon too to get 13:30.

Choke Your Chicken - 8:19 PM

Choking your chicken daily enables you to speedrun faster........
  • Timo Nieminen improved Ilkka's old record of e3m3 by 1 second to get 0:26. It's nearly impossible to get a decent run with all those stooopit monsters in the end!
  • Justin Fleck improved Nolan's Easy 100% of r2m5 by 13 seconds to get 3:11. Does anyone have the guts to challenge Justin/Nolan on the Rogue maps?
  • Andrey Stepanov improved Basil's Nightmare Run of Phantasmal Garrison by 1 second to get 0:33. The last bit of this map is damn hard to survive.
  • A shame for Andrey that Martin Selinus did it 1 second faster to get 0:32.
  • Martin also improved his Easy Run to get 0:24. This demo rocks!
  • He improved his Easy run of The Alpha Project by 1 second to get 0:09. Damn close to 0:08!
  • Jonny Andersson filled out the missing demo in the The Pit tables. He did the Nightmare 100% in a time of 6:31. Did you have a hard time finding the right keys Jonny?!? :)
  • Daniel & Jonny did the Easy 100% of From Out Of Nowhere, to get a time of 0:47, 1 second faster than Nolan & Evan.

Summertime is comin' at ya! - 10:04 PM

Summertime has finally arrived here in Denmark. There's half-naked chicks all around and everyone is getting heavily loaded....what more can you ask for?

Justin got a new desk which enabled him to improve some of the oldest records in the tables:

  • He did the Easy 100% of r1m6 in 2:16, 24 seconds faster than Will Marsh. That was his last single player record!
  • He also did the Nightmare 100% of r1m3 in 2:47, 34 seconds faster than Nolan's ancient keyboard record!
  • And finally he did the Nightmare 100% of r1m4 in 4:24, 88 seconds! faster than Nolan.
Next up we have Daniel "Fleck" Hansson. He has been sending in demos like a madman since he started speedrunning, just like Justin in the old days :)
  • He did the Easy Run of The Outer Regions in 1:22, which improves his previous record by 1 second.
  • He improved his Easy Marathon of Phantasmal Garrison too by 1 second to get 4:10
  • Daniel hooked up with Jonny (as usual) and improved their Easy 100% of e1m1 to get 0:32, beating their own record by 1 sec. That's the 70th demo on this map!!
  • The same two runners did the Easy Run of rd1m2 to get 0:21, 1 second faster than Ilkka and Juho's previous record.
And now on the rest of the demos:
  • Basil de Vries did the Easy 100% of Ephemerality to get 0:56, 4 seconds faster than Justin.
  • A few days later he improved it to 0:53, 3 seconds faster.
  • Basil hooked up with Richard and they got a time of 0:39, 14 seconds faster than the single player time.
  • Valeriy Burmistrov improved Justin's Nightmare Run of Polygon Base by 1 second to get 0:07, equaling Peter's easy run! Optimized?
  • Jonny Andersson & Daniel Andersson did the Easy 100% of Shrine Of Skank to get 1:02, 6 seconds faster than the single player time.
  • Tim Doherty did the Nightmare 100% Marathon of Hell's Fortress to get a time of 36:47, 636 seconds faster than Richard!!!
  • Richard and I did the coop no-one else wanted to do! We did the Nightmare 100% of e2m6 to get a time of 7:21, 65 seconds faster than my single player record. Be sure to check it out. And as a little bonus we included two eggs :)

Got the paks? - 2:10 PM

All the demos on this little update are from the two Quake mission packs. If you dont have them, you've surely missed out on a lot more than just these!
  • Richard and I did all the remaining levels in the Rogue pak which had no 2-player easy 100%s:
    • r1m7 in 1:58, 46 seconds faster than the single player.
    • r2m6 in 2:34, 38 seconds faster than the single player.
    • r2m7 in 2:22, 1:42 faster than the SP.
  • Tim Doherty filled did two more new marathons on the rogue pak. His mission seems to be to do them all... good luck with the NH, tim.
    • Nightmare run through the first episode in 22:42.
    • Easy run through both episodes in 30:32.
  • Justin Fleck did the easy 100% of hip1m2 in 2:06, seven seconds faster than my previous record.
That's it for now...

Farewell Carl.. - 10:15 AM

Although Carl and I hadn't talked in years I knew that it would only be right that he deserved an update. You see, back in the day we were coop buddies and he's been in the community as long as I have. Although I normally respect people's decisions, I find the decision to leave hard to stomach. Even though I could never turn my back on so many great friends which have helped me in the past I can understand how some people just need to 'move on'. Later Carl, I hope you stay in contact with us unlike some who have left in the past.

Mini Update - 12:48 AM

  • He also improved Markus's e2m5 easy run by 2 seconds to get 0:27. Damn, this guy is good, very few runners can improve Markus's amazing demos.
  • Carl Tholin improved Peter's e2m4 easy 100% by 5 seconds to get 1:35. By the looks of his txt file, this is his last quake demo =|.
  • Daniel Hansson improved his easy marathon run through PG by 8 seconds to get 4:11.
  • I improved Andrey's pg2 nightmare run by 1:41! to get 3:03.

Oh geez - 6:33 AM

The dynamic server has been down for almost 2 hours now... it blew up just as I was finishing this update. I'm going ahead and posting the news even though you can't get anything without using my ftp, which by the way, will be gone by Saturday. (Dynamic server back up at 8:40am)

Make sure to check out these fun table filling demos!

Here's some improvements to previous demos, most of which are by Daniel inc.

  • DanielH improved his easy run of pg1 by 11 seconds to get 1:23.
  • Daniel Andersson improved Ilkka's very old (10/98) easy run of azurette by one second to get 0:50.

  • DanielH improved his easy run of climb by one second to get 0:25.
  • DanielH improved Alekansder Osipov's easy run of foon by one second to get 1:00.

  • He did the same trick on nightmare to get 0:48, 39 seconds faster than w33d man.

  • Jonny Andersson improved Warren Hammond's nightmare run of escape by two seconds to get 0:57.
  • Justin improved Richard Skidmore's nightmare 100% of pg1 by 1:02 to get a time of 4:41. Fleck's comment? "That's some good shit".

Finally Back - 9:30 AM

Phew. What seemed like a year away from the internet was actually only 2 weeks! My ISP went bankrupt and of course cut me off without notice. However, I switched to cable modem and will return to the regular updates of my page.

On another note, Will has returned from his grave and will be posting the next ROTW. I'm not quite sure when this will be, but I'm just glad to see Will is back and alive.

The bunny that's stuck in time - 10:54 AM

For those that are unaware, there has been a Quake done Quick 'movie' production of "The Rabbit Run" in production for some time now. It's faced the usual delays associated with such things, but progress continues to be made. Along the way, some of the speed runs were improved too. In order to keep people informed, but to keep the demos secret, only the times for the news demos were posted here on SDA. That's why there's some records on the id maps that are not downloadable.

Since Trr-the movie, is taking almost an eternity to get released, we've decided to post some of these unposted demos which will be in it. Not all of them though. :) So, download all the following demos, some made more than two years ago, and marvel at the bunny skills you wish you had! I know I do.

  • e1m1 in 0:23 by Markus Taipale. This one already counted for one of the 66 demos on this level, mentioned last time.
  • e1m2 in 0:31 by Ilkka Kurkela. Note: This is not part of Trr; a 0:30 by Markus has been listed in the tables too, it will remain unposted.
  • e3m1 in 0:24 by Markus. e3m1 is the #2 map in turns of number of demos...
  • e4m2 in 0:30 by Markus. I can't come close to the trick used at the end!
  • e4m3 in 0:39 by Markus. Gotta love that quad grenade jump.
Anybody else think Markus should start a bunny hopping school?

Who needs girls? - 6:42 AM

Who needs female runners when you can coop with the guys?
  • Daniel Hansson and Jonny Andersson improved Marlo and Fabian's easy 100% of e1m1 by one second to get 0:33. Geez that's the 66th demo on this level, how many more can people do !?!
  • Evan convinced his friends Brad and David to play some Quake. They did a 3 player easy 100% on e1m5 in 0:32, one second faster than the two player.
  • Evan and I did a crazy nightmare 100% of e4m5 in 2:04, 33 seconds faster than the single player. Beware the zombie gibs.
  • We also did an easy 100% of ikspq4 in 1:46, 25 seconds faster than the single player.
  • Robert and Rickard Axelsson did the two player run on ikspq1. First they did it in 0:34 on easy, then 0:34 on nightmare, and then they went back and got 0:33 on easy!
  • DanielH and JonnyA also improved Robert and Rickard's easy run of pg1 by nine seconds to get 1:12.
  • And then did an easy 100% of coagula2 in 0:56, only two seconds slower than their 3 player.
  • Since they dont know when to stop, D&J also did demos on escape. They did the easy run in 0:48 (0:50) and the easy 100% in 0:52 (1:08).
For those bound to complain: of course I dont mean what I say, anyone is welcome to join in the madness that is Quake running!

And now for those people who play alone :)

  • Daniel Hansson improved Aleksander Osipov's easy run of e3m5 by one second, bringing the time under one minute, to 0:59.
  • He also improved the nightmare run by one second to get 1:01.
  • But Jozsef had already done it in 1:00! (I'm posting both because Jozsef sent his in later than Daniel)
  • I'm starting to think Daniel did half the demos in this update... He also did an easy run of placebo in 1:59, seven seconds faster than Thomas Bergendorff.
  • Jozsef Szalontai improved his run of badland1 by one second to get a time of 1:01.
  • Somebody annoying *cough* ken *cough* did an easy 100% of coagula2 in 1:02, beating out Richard Skidmore by nine seconds.
  • Jonny Andersson improved his previous easy 100% of the pit (Attila's map) by two seconds to get 2:22.
  • Timo Nieminen figured out how to change levels from e2m3 :) ... and improved Daniel Hansson's nightmare run of e2m4 by four seconds to get 0:52.
  • One of the other Daniels--Daniel Andersson--improved his nightmare run of czg01 by four seconds to get 1:54.
  • Andrey Stepanov finally filled the hole for the nightmare run of pg1 by getting a time of 3:44. BTW pg2 NR is still free as well!
  • Andrey also did a marathon easy run through the Phantasmal Garisson episode in a time of 4:58.
  • Daniel (back to Hansson) improved Richard's nightmare 100% of czg01 by a big 34 seconds to get 3:26.
  • Richard felt too many of his demos were being beaten for this update, so he did one of his own (OK, probably not the reason). He improved his nightmare 100% of coagula2 by 29 seconds to get 1:51.
  • And finally, Daniel (heh i was right) improved his own marathon run through the czg07 pak by five seconds to get 2:49.

  • Easy run of GATORDIV in 1:01, 1 second faster than Matthias's old demo.
Martin Selinus improved his previous Easy 100% of E3M2 by 5 seconds to get 0:54, the end just plain kicks ass.

Thomas Stubgaard improved his previous Nightmare 100% of E3M3 by 2 seconds to get 2:02, not enough nails!

Daniel Andersson did a Nightmare run of CZG01 in 1:58, 12 seconds faster than Basil's time.

Cooperative Demos:

Daniel Hansson, Carl Tholin and Sara Hansson did the Nightmare 100% of COAGULA2 in 1:15, this demo goes down in history as the first Quake speed run to ever be done by a woman!

Daniel Hansson, Jonny Anderson and Ludvig Sjöstrand did the Easy 100% of COAGULA2 in 0:54, perfect level for mad coops.

Robert Axelsson and Rebecca Axelsson (all Axelsson kids start with an 'R') did the Easy 100% of JZB1 in 0:14.

Robert Axelsson and Rebecca Axelsson also did the Nightmare 100% of JZB1 in 0:27.

Robert Axelsson and Rickard Axelsson did the Nightmare run of JZB1 in 0:11, nice run.

Robert and Rickard also did the Nightmare 100% of JZB3 in 0:20, also very nice.

Nolan Pflug and Thomas Stubgaard filled in the Nightmare 100% of E1M4 in 2:05, Thomas was owned.

Nolan Pflug and myself have improved the Easy run of ZER1M1 by 8 seconds to get 0:32.

Daniel Hansson and Jonny Andersson improved their old Easy run of NETWORLD by 9 seconds to get 1:00.

Minor update - 8:36 PM

Just a few demos for your viewing pleasure....
  • Peter Horvath did the Nightmare 100% of E4M1 in 0:58, 11 seconds faster than his previous record from '98.
There's a bug in Quake which allows you to shoot the Nailgun after you have exited the intermission screen, which Peter made great use of to kill the last monster. Read his txt file for more details!
  • Evan Wagner did the Easy 100% of ZER1M1 in 0:51, 3 seconds faster than the record he did a few days ago. /me like the sound of chainsaw ripping through grunts :)
  • Evan hooked up with Nolan to make a coop of ZER1M1 in 0:39, 1 second faster than Evan & Cameron's Easy coop RUN....hmmmm?
  • Hannu Kankaanpää did the Easy 100% of A3 (The Journey Home) in 2:53, 6 seconds faster than his previous record. Nice map.
  • Arturo Garcia Lasca did Easy run of Dextromethorphan in 0:14, 3 seconds faster than Stefan. Monster cooperation is needed to make this trick work.
  • He also did the Nightmare run of Darkness Diabolical in 0:38, 2 seconds faster than Justin.

Rumour has it that the MP-Crew is trying to convince Daniel Hanssons sister to do a coop with them. If there's any truth in that rumour she will be the first female ever to have a Quake record! It would be fun to have a chick on sda wouldn't it.... (personally I would love to read her profile :) Go for it Sara......

If some of you for some reason didn't get the point in Evan's headline (I didn't get it) in the previous update, check out this link to get an idea of what it was about :)

Nolan sends word that he has updated the Dzip site with new info. If you haven't download Dzip for some stoooopit reason, then do it now!

"All Your Demos Are Belong To Us" - 7:00 AM

First off I'd like to remind everyone to try and fill in the blanks at my site. There are still plenty of holes, and plenty of runners who haven't even tried a cheated run. I only have two cheated demos to update so far so until I get more I can't update!

Single Player Demos:

Robert Axelsson went nutz0rs in this update.

  • Easy run of EVILWRLD in 0:30, 2 seconds faster than Ilkka with a cool ogre-gj.
  • Easy run of P_SE_3B in 0:27, 1 second faster than Justin.
  • Nightmare run of ELEKTRA in 0:17, 1 second faster than Ilkka.
  • Nightmare run of EVILWRLD in 0:32, 5 seconds faster than Justin. Damn this looked tough!
And of course what update would be complete without demos from Mads-Peter Stubgaard.
  • Nightmare 100% of BLACK1 in 4:03, 26 seconds faster than Marlo! Owned.
  • Nightmare 100% of RTD in 2:32, 1 second faster than his semi-old demo.
Richard Skidmore is back up in the weezy.
  • Easy 100% of COAGULA2 in 1:11, 8 seconds faster than Ken.
  • Nightmare 100% of COAGULA2 in 2:20, 112 seconds faster than Fredrik! Holy shysties.
My least favorite Quake player Jozsef Szlontai has improved MY E2M6 Easy run by 1 second to get 1:15. Jozsef, I thought you loved me! How could you do such a thing! Someday I will get that fiend-push over the bar and own joo :)

Hannu Kankaanpää improved Justin's Easy 100% of A3 by 9 seconds to get 2:59. Justin is probably too scared to fight back.

Valeriy Burmistrov 'The mad Russian' improved his own Easy 100% of JZB3 by 1 second to get 0:15. This run is getting damn close to optimum I would say.

Nolan 'Mad H4ck3r' Pflug improved Ilkka's Nightmare 100% of ZER1M3 by 88 seconds to get 4:47. Yet another great download from the man who brought us speed running.

Martin Selinus continues his bashing on Markus by improving his Nightmare run of Episode 4 by 8 seconds to get 3:31. Fight back Markus!

Marlo Galinski has finally decided he can't live without Quake so he dusted off his keyboard and did an Easy 100% of Episode 2! He improved his own time 23 seconds to get 12:36.

Finally, I have improved Marlo's Easy 100% of ZER1M1 by 1 second to get 0:54. I just got a better time an hour ago but I'm trying for even more!

Cooperative Demos:

Robert Axelsson and Rickard Axelsson filled in some Prodigy Special Edition cooperative demos.

  • Easy run of P_SE_3B in 0:25, that damn knight is annoying!
  • Nightmare run of P_SE_3B in 0:29, gotta love that end part.
  • Easy run/100% of P_SE_XXX in 1:15, watch this now!

Because Nolan is on vacation you will have to log on to my FTP to get demos that aren't posted yet. All the log on information is the same, and the link is under 'new demos' on the menu.

'Run of the Whenever the hell I post one' is coming along great. Results will be posted tomorow night, so send in those demos!

Now, here's your update all you ungrateful bastards.

Thomas Stubgaard, better known as Stubby has done some great demos.

  • Nightmare 100% of E2M1 in 1:30, 1 second faster than Justin. Seemed like it should have been more!
  • Nightmare 100% of E4M3 in 3:56, 12 seconds faster than his previous record GET THIS NOW!!!
Daniel Hansson is still climbing the ranks at SDA.
  • Easy run of A3 in 1:03. Improved Shambler's just-made 1:05, damn :(
  • Nightmare run of A3 in 1:08, 6 seconds faster than his 1:14 he sent a little before.
My favorite player, Jozsef Szlontai has done a couple of runs also.
  • Nightmare run of CHESSP1 in 0:31, new to the tables.
  • Nightmare 100% of PHALLUSY in 1:13, 5 seconds faster than his previous time.
Robert Axelsson, when not playing 'fotball' (as he calls it) made some more records.
  • Nightmare run of D204 in 0:25, 2 seconds faster than Justin.
  • Nightmare run of H2M2 in 0:29, 1 second faster than the weeddmaster.
  • Nightmare run of HOTEL in 0:24, 1 second faster than his just-sent 0:25.
Daniel Magnusson has done an awesome Nightmare 100% of E1M1 in 1:05, 2 seconds faster than his previous record! I dare say that it's close to optimised now :)

Nolan Pflug (not 'Peeflug', it's 'floog') did another Zerstorer run! This time he has done the Easy 100% of Z3 in 4:13, 1 minute and 12 seconds faster than Ilkka! Very cool demo, of course, all of his demos are.

Ingmar Poerner has done a Nightmare run of PIT in 1:11, 21 seconds faster than Daniel's 1:32.

The biggest pimp on earth, Mads-Peter Stubgaard is back! This time he has conquered his previous record of Black1 by 4 seconds to get 1:09.

Fredrik Lindblom has done a Nightmare 100% of COAGULA2 in 4:12, new to the tables.

Valeriy Burmistrov, probably the only Russian speed-runner has done the Nightmare 100% of PG4 in 0:20, 2 seconds faster than Arturo.

Martin Selinus or 'baby Horvath' has sent in another marathon. This time he has improved Sergi's Easy run of Episode-2 by 4 seconds to get 3:45.

Cooperative Demos:

Cameron Engles (call him 'fools') and my very own self (damn I've gotta take a piss) have done some demos.

  • Easy 100% of COLONY improved by 17 seconds to get 1:01.
  • Easy 100% of PIT in 1:23, new to the tables. Read my interesting point in the .txt.

The 'heavy metal' brothers Robert and Rickard Axelsson have done a couple of coops.

  • Nightmare run of HIPDM1 in 0:18, new to the tables.
  • Nightmare run of E2M7 in 0:34, 1 second faster than their previous time.
Daniel Hansson and Daniel Andersson, better known as D&D have made coop demos.
  • Easy run of CLIMB in 0:24, new to the tables.
  • Nightmare run of RD1M3 in 0:34, 3 seconds faster than Daniel and Mikael's demo.

Nolan and Thomas have done the demo nobody else would do! Nightmare 100% of E3M6 in 3:41, now do E4M8 :)

Peter Horvath (Mr. "I'm so much better than anyone else.") and Atilla Csernyik have improved the Easy run of PIT by 2 seconds to get 0:19.

The MP-Crew have yet again raped SDA with too many demos.

  • 5-Player Nightmare 100% of E1M1 in 0:33, 6 seconds faster than their previous!
  • 2-Player Easy 100% of E2M5 in 0:46, 5 seconds faster than Carl & Daniel's previous.
  • 3-Player Easy run of CZG02 in 1:34, 7 seconds faster than the 2-player.
  • 4-Player Easy 100% of CZG7B in 1:49, lots of mayhem! I love this demo!

Marathons - 8:05 PM

Nolan is busy, Evan should be ashamed of himself as he didn't do the update he was supposed to, Justin is probably high on something and I'm about to drink a helluva lot a beers, so this update is a little sparse, but stay tuned for more demos soon........sounds like something you've heard before huh
  • Martin Selinus went nuts and did a run through all of quake in the blistering time of 14:02, improving his previous record by 1 minute. When I was at Martin's age I played Tetris on my dad's 286 with a brown/orange monitor :P
  • While he worked on his marathon through all of quake he improved his own time in episode4 by 1 second to get 3:10. This is not the ep4 portion of the eall mind you... Baby Horvath is proving himself better and better all the time.
  • Nolan Pflug did an EH through all of the Zerstörer episode in 21:45. It's sad that no-one except Nolan plays this mission pack. Give it a try you guys!
  • Daniel Hansson did the EH through all of CZG7 in 18:51. I'm still amazed by the design of this mission pack. Why hasn't id software hired Christian Grawert yet?
Check the player profiles everynow and then. There's some new ones and some of them has been updated with new info as well, including my own! If you have a hard time finding the link to the profiles it's on the buttom of the Tables section!

Nolan's FTP will be out for a week due to vacation at his parents. Finally he will get some descent food :)

Half an update - 8:21 PM

Since nobody wants to update and I dont have much time, I'm going to just update the single player demos on easy skill in this update...
  • Ingmar Poerner did his first demo in a long time; the easy run of the recently added "The Pit" in a time of 0:58, and the next day he improved it to get 0:54.
  • Jonny Andersson did the easy 100% of the pit in 2:24.
  • Jonny improved Shambler's run of chessp1 by one second to get 0:27, but then Jozsef Szalontai came in and got a 0:25.
  • Arturo Garcia Lasca did the easy 100% of chessp1 in 1:08.
  • Fredrik Linblom did the easy 100% of coagula2 in 1:39, but Arturo came in and beat that by 20 seconds to get 1:19.
  • Martin Selinus improved his previous run of e1m6-the long way, by one second to get an amazing time of 0:24.
  • Robert Axelsson improved Chris Longden's old run of e2m7 by one second to get 0:33.
  • Robert also improved Attila Csernyik's run of doom2_04 by one second to get 0:24.
  • Robert improved Justin Fleck's run of hotel by two seconds to get 0:23.
  • Carl Tholin improved Martin's previous run of czg07b by two seconds to get 0:36.
  • Carl improved my run of polygon2-the long way, by six seconds to get 0:49 with the same three grenade jumps...
  • Carl reclaimed the easy 100% of elektra from Ilkka by improving his demo by three seconds, getting a time of 1:01.
  • Daniel Hansson improved Shambler's original run of a3 by 13 seconds to get 1:13.
  • Daniel Hansson improved his previous run of badland2 by one second to get 2:32.
  • Mads-Peter Stubgaard improved his previous easy 100% of 4fiffy3 by six seconds to get 2:28.

Also, the cheated quake page has been updated.

Run of the Whenever - 8:45 AM

Seeing as Gerald is out of commission I have decided to post a small contest for the masses. The object is to kill all the monsters in this level on easy skill and exit as soon as possible, using this map. The level was built by me in about two hours so it's quite pointless, but it is amusing. All your demos must be recorded using QdQStats and sent to me. Good luck running, the winner gets a congatulations email from Nolan, yaay.

Results will be posted at 3/05/01

Yet Another Virus - 10:11 PM

My computer has yet again been struck by a virus (probably from all my warez). I've had to reformat my entire drive and I couldn't even gain access to Windows to save the latest cheated demos that were submitted. Please check the cheated quake page and submit to me any demos that you may have sent. Also, I even received a demo from Will Marsh (he is still alive!), but that bastard Jozsef improved it before I could even post Will's :)

chessp1 - 1:20 AM

Just a note that I forgot to mention when I added chessp1 two updates ago. There's a bug in the map so that you can't get 100% kills on easy... there's one that's impossible to get so the max is 28/29.

You screw with the bull, you get the horn! - 6:27 AM

Coagula2 seems to be quite popular already, and why shouldn't it be, it's an awesome speedrunning map! It would be fun if more people followed Tim's and Attila's example and made maps built especially for speedrunning purposes (hint hint :)

Let's start off with demos done on coagula2:

  • Carl did the ER in 0:11, 7 seconds faster than Shambler's run.
  • But Baby Horvath (Martin) wasn't satisfied, he decided to do 0:10, which is a whole fat second faster than Carl. Way to go Martin!
  • Robert did the NR in 0:15, using a different route than Carl and Martin.
  • With Carl's route he was able to do 0:11, equalling his easy run. Who will be the first to do 0:10 in nightmare?
Of course no update without a few demos on CZG7:
  • Daniel Hansson did the EH of czg7b in 4:16, 13 seconds faster than himself.
  • He filled the blank spot of the NH too in a time of 7:50.
  • Nolan did a very cool 100% marathon through CZG7 on nightmare in 21:47. All mission packs should be as cool as this one!
  • While he did his marathon he improved Stefan's NH of czg7a by 51 seconds to get a time of 6:02. Very nice indeed.
It rarely happens that we're able to post 4 demos from the Rogue pack in the same update:
  • Evan owned Ilkka bigtime by doing the ER of r1m3, 6 seconds faster to get 0:20.
  • He did the NR too, 3 seconds faster to get 0:20. Damn nice demos!
  • Robert did the ER of the boss level in 0:28, 3 seconds faster than Carl Lloyd-Parker's old demo.
  • He did the NR as well in 0:50, which is 14 seconds faster than Carl too.
Evan's favorite speeder Jozsef did two id runs which kick major ass:
  • He did the ER of e2m1 using the route that was intented by id software. He improved Ilkka's run by 1 seconds to get 0:45. I like this one alot!
  • He managed to do the NR of e4m8 1 seconds faster than the ER and he beat his own record by 1 second too to get 0:45. It's getting close to be optimized.
And now on to the rest of the demos which doesn't fit in anywhere else:
  • Shambler improved his old ER on z5 by 11 seconds to get 1:17. Nice trick in this one!
  • Justin did the NH of bb5 in 4:28, 146 seconds faster than Stefan!!!!
  • Valeriy did the NR of ik3 in 0:16, 1 second faster than Justin.
  • Evan and his buddy Cameron did the ER on the newly added Pit map in 0:21. Cool trick alert....
  • They also did the NR in 0:28. Same as above :)

Some new maps - 7:00 PM

Two new made-with-speedrunning-in-mind maps have been released at the same time. What are the odds of that?
  • The first is coagula2-flesh by Elek, with a style similar to the first coagula. Shambler did an easy run in 0:18 when he reviewed it, but Evan has improved it already... but not enough he says :)
  • Secondly is a map by speedrunner Attila Csernyik called The Pit. It's a medium sized map with some custom textures and interesting design.
  • And I decided to add one of the maps that Shambler recently improved his personal speedrun on. chessp1 is a small metal map. Shambler's new easy run is in 0:28. I decided to do the Nightmare 100% and got it in a time of 1:28.
Now shut up and get running... Demos sent in the past few days will be posted later.

  • Download is now an install program
  • Smaller exe/dll sizes
  • Extraction of Quake demo files now 4x or more faster
  • Added optional large toolbar
  • Self extracting exe files work above 256mb, have less overhead, and warn when there's extraction problems
  • Fixed all issues related to path column, including sort
  • Settings are stored on a per-user basis if you use a multi-user machine
  • Sped up opening very large .dz files
  • Fixed problems where commands were selectable when they shouldn't be
  • Added sort by extension
  • Changed the tooltips to be a bit more descriptive
Head on over to Dzip page to grab the latest and greatest version!

Loads of demos - 1:50 AM

Well, here we go again...another bunch of CZG demos:
  • Daniel Hansson did the ER on czg01 in 1:51. Nice.
  • Daniel also did the ER on czg7a in 1:26, 6 seconds faster than his previous record.
  • And of course he couldn't keep his greasy hands off the nightmare run too. He did it in 1:40. Too many monsters to survive in his own opinion!
  • Martin Selinus send in two demos of his usual standards. czg7b ER in 0:38, 1 sec. faster than Evan, and czg7c NR in 0:32. Download now!!
  • Daniel Andersson decided to do his first single player record. He did the ER of czg2 in a time of 3:41. It's not as bad as he claims himself :)
  • Daniel improved his own marathon through czg7 by 7 seconds to get a time of 3:06. Pretty good.
  • Carl Tholin & Johan Nilsson did the ER of czg7a in 0:37. Fun run :)
  • Carl And Johan also did the ER of czg7c in 0:26. Cool rocketboosts to the upper level.
  • Nolan & Evan did the EH of czg7a in 2:59, 49 seconds than their previous record! This map is just amazing....great layout, beautiful textures, lotsa possible routes and very very good for coops.
  • Daniel, Jonny & Fredrik did the ER of czg2 in 1:42. What a silly shambler at the end.....
Non CZG demos:
  • Jozsef Szalontai improved his previous record on e4m8 by 2 seconds to get 0:46, equalling Ilkka's easy run!!!
  • Timo Nieminen has taken over the 100%'s on e2m3. He did the EH 3 seconds faster than Justin to get a time of 1:17. Best newcomer I've seen in a while.
  • Valeriy Burmistrov took the liberty of improving a record from the "Unbeatable Records" list. He did d207 in 0:09, beating his previous time with 1 second. Has anybody got the skills to do it in 0:08 ??
  • Daniel Hansson did the ER of Lost World in 0:42
  • Ken decided to do some running on the mexx levels which resulted in both the easy and nightmare 100%'s on mexx2.
  • Robert Axelsson improved his previous nightmare run on d1m7 by 1 sec. to get 0:44. Hehe, it's great fun to watch those fast bunnies.
  • Martin Selinus just managed to sneak in a few more demos for this update: He did both runs on bb4 in the time of 0:19, 1 sec. faster than Ilkka, and 0:19, 1 sec. faster than Marlo.
  • He did a marathon through episode 3 on easy skill in the amazing time of 2:56. INSANE!
  • And the last demo from him is the nightmare run of Hit The Roof in 0:45. Not bad.
  • Nolan Pflug improved Stefan's old r1m7 NR record by 96 seconds!! to get a time of 1:35. Those fucking axes in the ceiling sucks major ass.
  • Nolan & Evan did the NH of e4m3 in 3:46. Not much you can do to speed this map up, except for the end and getting to the first trigger as fast as possible.
  • Daniel, Johhny & Fredrik did a 3 player ER of Networld in 1:04. This map is way too confusing...
Btw: please send your profiles to my new email address from now on thx :)

Gabba Gabba Hey - 6:52 AM

Update 9:22AM
The original 'American Trio' (Nolan, Evan & Justin) have just done an easy 100% of E2M3 in 0:48, great watching for the family!

Lotsa demos has been sent in on the newly added czg maps:

  • Daniel Hansson did the ER on czg7a in 1:32

  • Basil de Vries did the NR on czg7b in 1:00
  • Jesse van Dijk did the NR on czg7c 0:46, here's a little snip of his txt file: All I wanted was my name in SDA's history behind this map somewhere.
  • 6 hours later Basil improved jesse's time by 7 seconds to get 0:39 Heh, Jesse barely accomplished his goal :)
  • Nolan Pflug did the NH of czg7c in a time of 13:57. He almost blew himself up at one point...only 6 health left !!
  • Daniel decided to show off his skills and did a marathon through the three czg07 maps in a time of 3:13.
  • Nolan & Evan did the ER of czg7a in 0:46. Very nice.
  • Carl & Johan did the ER of czg7c in 0:31. Keep up the good work guys.
Various single player demos:
  • Daniel Magnusson did the NH of e1m1 in 1:07, 4 seconds faster than his previous record. This demo kicks major butt, download it now!
  • I did the NH of e3m1 in 1:37, 2 seconds faster than Martin. Now I own all the NH records on episode 3...YEAH!!
  • Nolan did r1m7 ER in 1:26, 4 seconds faster than Justin.
  • He also did the EH in 2:44, 40 seconds faster than Stefan....big improvement.

  • Daniel Hansson did the NR of Lost World in 0:53, one seconds faster then Justin.
  • And finally Simon Nordberg did the NR of Critters in an amazing time of 0:16, 1 second faster than Jozsef and equalling MP-crew's two & five player demos...step the fuck up MP people :)
Coops:
  • A new American Trio consisting of Nolan, Evan & Cameron did the EH of e1m4 in 0:41. First time they succeeded all the way through.
  • Daniel & Daniel did the ER and NR on Critters in 0:16, 0:16. Check above for the single player demo...hehe
  • The same two Daniel's did the ER of Lost World in 0:36
  • Daniel did the NR with Jonny in a time of 0:52
  • Daniel and Jonny did the ER of Networld in 1:09
Note from Evan: Check out Sebastian Olsson's cheated demos on Quake Done Naked. Incredibly cool demos to say the least. If you don't believe me, watch his E4M7 cheated demo.

Lots of demos and new maps to run! - 2:13 AM

Update 9:55PM: The czg07progs that I oringally posted still had problems with crashing quake with No Free Edicts (the original progs were even worse). I've now got it so it should never happen again unless you try to gib every monster without pickup up any items! :) So redownload the czg07progs...

Attention everyone, both veteran runners and people who've never made demos before. It's time to show off the skills you may or may not have, by making some demos for the maps that I'm adding in this update. What better way to get your name and demo on SDA that to fill a hole in the tables, even if it is some slow time? The times that these maps might take will be long, because they're very big and have lots of monsters. FUN FUN!! :)

Anyway, the maps are the Insomnia pak by CZG; czg07a, czg07b, and czg07c. They were recently released and reviewed on teamshambler's site. Once I played through them, I whipped up the stats patch for them because I knew I wanted them on SDA. You can download the map pak here, but also download this progs.dat and use them instead of the one in the map pak. We've got a few demos already done on these maps:

  • Evan ran czg07b in 0:39 on easy, 13 seconds faster than Shambler's 0:52.
  • Evan also did the easy run of czg07c in 0:32, ten seconds faster than Shambler's 0:42.
  • I did the nightmare 100% of czg07a in 6:56; 230 monsters :)
  • Evan and I did a coop run on czg07b in 0:36.
  • Evan and I did the easy 100% of czg07a in 3:48.
Since we already have czg04 here on SDA, I decided to add czg01 and czg02 as well. So that means 5 new maps filled with endless running possibilities! Oh, and you can do a marathon through the three czg07 maps too, if you're crazy (like me, I tried it). There's also still blank spots on the recently added Phantasmal Garrison map pak. To prevent sending in a demo that is slower than one already sent in, you should be sure to check the NPY section of my ftp to see what has been sent in already. (BTW, that stands for Not Posted Yet)

Now for all the demos that have been sent in recently:

  • Daniel Magnusson improved his previous nightmare 100% marathon through the 1st episode by 57 seconds, to get 13:00.
  • Martin Selinus improved Markus Taipale's easy run through the 4th episode by six seconds to get a time of 3:18.
  • Daniel Hansson improved his recently done nightmare run of e2m4 by one second to get 0:56.
  • Timo Nieminen has swooped in from somewhere to improve Peter Horvath's old nightmare 100% of e2m3 by 23 seconds, to get a nice time of 2:36.
  • Martin Selinus improved his previous easy 100% of e4m2 by two seconds to get 1:09.
  • Basil de Vries filled the hole for the nightmare run of pg3 in a time of 0:34, gettin an ogre to block those pesky bars at the end.
  • Valeriy and Vlad Burmistrov improved R&R's easy 100% of pg4 by one second to get 0:06.
  • Carl Tholin and Daniel Hansson improved a coop demo that Stefan and I did at speedcon, the easy 100% of e2m5, by five seconds, to get 0:51.
  • Richard Skidmore shows that you can still play quake for long periods of time even if you are married and have an infant! He did the nightmare 100% through the entire PG episode in a time of 19:52.
  • Jozsef Szalontai sent in lots of custom map demos:
    • Easy run of badland1 in 1:02, two seconds faster than Optic.
    • Easy run of bub2 in 0:12, one second faster than Fredrik Arvidsson.
    • Nightmare run of bub2 in 0:12 as well, and also one second faster than Fredrik.
    • Nightmare run of commctr in 0:39, four seconds faster than his previous demo.
    • Easy run of critters in 0:17, two seconds faster than Optic.
    • He did the nightmare run of critters in 0:17 as well, two seconds faster than Ilkka this time.
    • Easy run of earth in 0:55, four seconds faster than Optic.
    • Easy 100% of earth in 1:32, seven seconds faster than Optic.
    • Nightmare run of earth in 1:00, five seonds faster than [guess who].
    • Nightmare 100% of earth in 1:32, 15 seconds faster than... Optic? nope, faster than his previous demo.

First demo update in 2001 - 12:34 AM

Let's start the new year off with four id demos:
  • Markus Taipale did the easy run of e4m4 in 0:20, improving his previous record with one second using a fish-grenade-jump. This is a must see!!
  • Daniel Hansson did the nightmare run of e2m4 in 0:57, 3 seconds faster than Kimmo's longtime standing record.
  • The American Trio did a 3p EH of e2m2 in 0:37, 4 seconds _faster_ than MP-crew's 5p, demo!!. Nolan just managed to get the last zombie :)

On to the Phantasmal Garisson demos:
  • Marlo did pg1 EH in 3:00, 33 seconds faster than Daniel Hansson.
  • Richard Skidmore did the NH in 6:28, but a few hours later he send in a 5:55, improving it with 33 seconds.
  • Robert did pg2 ER in a time of 1:34, 48 seconds faster than Mark :)
  • Richard also did the NH of pg2 in the blistering time of 14:01, lotsa bunnies in this one :P
  • Arturo aka Ken did the NH of pg4 in 0:24, but a few hours later we recieved a 0:22. Hmm it seems that no-one is actually listening to what we say at SDA....!!
  • Nolan found time between his studies and his work on dzip to do a EH marathon in the time of 9:24. Quite good
  • Robert & Rickard did three coops: pg1 ER in 1:21, pg2 ER in 1:25, pge ER in 0:05. Can this one be done faster?
  • The MP-Crew has done a couple of coops too: pg1 5p ER in 1:07, pg1 5p EH in 1:47, pg4 4p EH in 0:06, pg4 4p NH in 0:13.
  • Evan & Cameron did the EH of pg1 in 2:01.
  • Mark & Daniel A did the EH of pg2 in 4:15.
On to the rest of the litter:
  • Robert did the easy run of d1m7 in 0:40, 3 seconds faster than Stefan. I really enjoyed this demo.
  • Robert & Rickard did the EH of Hit The Roof in 0:58.
  • Richard Skidmore was crazy enough to do a marathon on nightmare skill through episode one of the Rogue pack in a time of 47:23.
Remember to check the profiles from time to time. There's been added quite a few.
And check out Quake Done Naked too. Lotsa cool demos to check out.

All fixed up... you know what to do - 6:50 AM

I'm 99% sure that I have fixed the cutscene bugs that were happening in the Phantasmal Garisson maps. If you dont want to redownload 3.2 MB again, well you can just downloading this patch. Now get running! Oh and if I haven't completely fixed it, just tell me so I can hit myself with a large object.

Dzip - 6:25 AM

Dzip v2.4 has been released! I barely got it finished in time for it to have a date of 01.01.01. The new version adds a cool new feature, which promises to make extracting of .dem files faster than its been. Its not actually in the program yet... but you'll see what I mean :) Check it out on the dzip page.
